the new xfinity supersonic bundle. it's kind of a big deal. building a better bay area moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. and within a matter of couple seconds. i watched my car. religion drive off the lot a simple lunch break errand ends in a nightmare good evening, and thank you for joining us on dion limb. you're watching abc 7 news at 11:00. a conquered woman is speaking out tonight after her vehicle was stolen from an east bay car wash. the incident has cost her thousands of dollars and now more than two weeks later. she is still looking for answers abc 7 news reporter tim johns spoke with her this afternoon and brings us the story. you'll see only on seven. i'm hoping it was a mistake. but to me it was a it was a pretty bad mistake a nightmare situation unfolding for shannon orton at the autopia car wash in concord on july 20th. orton took her car in to be

cleaned. she says she sat and waited for it to be finished, but when it was done within a matter a couple seconds, i watched my car legally drive off the lot. they legitimately gave my keys to someone else orton says after the initial shock wore off. she went inside to talk to the staff telling them that one of their employees had given the keys to the wrong person the lady that was at the customer service went up to the guy who was clinging my car and asked where the subaru was and he just stood there like this. police were called and orton fouled a report. she says well, she hasn't seen the footage herself officers told her that surveillance video shows. person with the hats glasses and face masks getting into her vehicle and driving away orton says she's unsure of what to think now, but wonders how the car wash made this mistake. they didn't check for a claim tickets. they didn't check for any of that like this should have never happened what regardless of what happened. the error will cost orton thousands of dollars.

she's now got to buy a new car and her insurance will only pay a small amount. i was almost done paying off my car and now i have to start all over i spoke with staff. atopia car wash on saturday afternoon. they tell me that none of the employees present at the time that i went in were there the day orton's car was stolen. i left my name and number and they told me that a manager would get back to me. so for now orton is just taking it day by day trying to warn others to be careful to ensure the same thing doesn't potentially happen to them. i don't think i could ever go to one of those places again. definitely not autopia. honestly any of those i think i'm gonna to be nervous about it forever. in concord tim johns abc 7 news nolan was shot, but san francisco police say they got into a shootout with a suspect today in the mission district. officers say they returned fire when a man in his 50s fled on foot and shot at officers. it happened just before eight at shotwell between 16th and 17th streets the suspect hid behind a

vehicle and continued to shoot it officers members of the department's tactical unit helped to take the suspect into custody based on the behavior and what he was engaged in there will be criminal charges. but at this point we are several hours out from figuring out what they actually are. the suspect was taken to the hospital suffering from minor injuries police have not revealed what led up to that pursuit a town hall meeting will be held to discuss the police involved shooting within 10 days. to the north bay now, we're three pets died in a house fire in petaluma this afternoon. that's according to the press democrat. it started just after one year 10th and b streets and you can see in this video from the press democrat just smoke rising from the roof. no one else was hurt in that fire. the wildfire that's destroyed already 90 homes in siskiyou county is now 40% contained. the mckinney fire has been burning for about a week now and it started in the klamath

national forest near the california oregon border. cal fires as it's now burned more than 60,000 acres making it the largest wildfire in the state so far this year. not far from the mckinney fire a cluster of wildfires is burning between the communities of syed and happy camp. it's being called the yeti complex the lightning sparked fires started on tuesday and have shut down a portion of highway 96 flames have burned more than 12 square miles and containment is at 10% tonight. hundreds of structures are threatened and evacuation orders are in place. well moving on education is one of the key components in building a better bay area. so tonight we are focusing on the new school year which has started or is about to start. this year inflation has made it harder for some families to cover the cost of school supplies abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard shows us how one young woman has spent a decade helping students succeed. binders we notebooks headphones

diana garabay is ready for seventh grade. now that she has the school supplies. she needs to succeed. he's going to be a big help for you. now that school started. yeah a lot of help. yeah. thank you. everything from notebooks to rulers and glue sticks are part of stuff the bus a free school supply giveaway at deer valley high school and antioch organized for the past 10 years by 21 year old. so wilson with the help of volunteers coming from a low-income family myself, you know, i i clarissa organized her first supply giveaway when she was in sixth grade after realizing some classmates didn't have the tools. they needed check it out. we're talking thousands of backpacks. all the school supplies are donated every year for clarissa's goodwill mission parents of families have always been, you know, struggling but

we have noticed an increase in those families. this is really helping a lot hard times with covid and this is really helping keep extra food in our family by giving us backpacks. it is expensive just to buy food is expensive. so supplies all that. they need this year is great. clarissa is now a senior at san diego state university with big plans ahead. i have a strong love for community service and this is something that i want to make a career out of doing she hopes to start a nonprofit for founding ocean to continue helping families during back to school season. yeah. we just want to keep it going. in antioch cornell bernard abc 7 news meantime parents and students on the peninsula also got help preparing for the upcoming return to the classroom. today samaritan house gave away about a thousand backpacks in school supplies the group will give away about 2,000 more as the start of the school year approaches. the ceo of samaritan house says this year at the free supplies

are especially needed. it's the cost of food the cost of gas cost of rent is just tearing them apart and what we're able to do here today is give out 3,500 backpacks full of age-appropriate school supplies, so that these kids can start school ready to learn and feeling great about themselves. samaritan house held today's giveaway at the san mateo county event center. each backpack is filled with spiral notebooks and pens along with pencils and crayons for the younger kids and much more. school district officials in marin say parents and students could expect the same covid protocols that were in place at the end of last school year when classes resume later this month that includes frequent hand washing at home testing and masking indoors on campus back in may about 20 schools in marin experienced covid outbreaks the marin independent journal reports district officials are awaiting updated guidance from the state department of public health and the cdc.

afghanistan at least 16 people have been killed and dozens more injured in two separate bomb blasts in the past 48 hours in the city of kabul night abc 7 news reporter tara campbell spoke with a local afghan evacuee who says the bombings hit way too close to home clean up on the streets of kabul after a saturday morning. bomb blast killed at least eight people and injured dozens more it comes just one day after a car bomb killed another eight people in the capital city when we saw this in social media. i we just talked with our family member and they was safe. for nazrula. amir's eye. he worked alongside the us four years and evacuated amid the taliban take over nearly one year ago now living in concord his family still in kabul my young sisters and brothers. they are at home now, so they are not able to go to school. they're not able to go to the

likely see it but notice by the afternoon and throughout the day lots of sunshine for everyone just some partly cloudy conditions along the north bay shoreline, but everyone else sunny and blue skies lows tonight mainly in the upper 50s to low 60 san francisco 59 oakland 60, san jose 61 degrees now highs for tomorrow are very typical. we'll see 60s at the beaches around the lots of low to mid 70s and some mid-80s inland. so look for high of san francisco to be 68, oakland 72, san jose 79 and the warm spots will be fairfield antioch in the upper 80s for some spots like cloverdale and lakeport at 87 if you're heading to the bay bridge series game tomorrow, you'll just need the sunglasses and the sunscreen will start off at 68 degrees at around one o'clock and actually by 4 o'clock 72, so it'll be quite comfortable you'll notice temperatures look very similar. in fact monday into tuesday. not much change wednesday.

to pass the house christine sloan abc news, new work from threats to fake food deliveries to his son's elementary school being put on lockdown a former silicon valley tech executive and his family continued to be harassed over a social media handle. abc 7 news i-team reporter stephanie. sierra is digging into what investigators are calling the black market for social media. is hard to imagine there's a black market out there for social media accounts, but this story paints a bizarre picture of how it all works the suspects do whatever it takes to harass their victims their families to the point where they fear for their own safety and it's all over an instagram and twitter handle. for chris eberle this bizarre nightmare started in march 2020 with a strange text. i i really couldn't figure out like if it was if it was a joke the former netflix executive received this message that said hey christopher gonna need at

ginger on instagram harassment to you and family. we'll start now my heart also kind of dropped a little bit. it was like, this is super weird. i replied with lol and they wrote back. haha. okay everly thought that was the end of it until 30 minutes later. he gets a phone call. it's a local 650 number. so i answered and the guy on the other end said yeah. hey, i'm outside with your tow truck. i was like sorry. it's like is this chris everly? i was like it is he's like, yeah, you called for a tow truck. i'm outside your house. he walked out saw no one there turns out a tow truck showed up at his former address down the street everly figured it was a prank but little did he know it was just the beginning. what i got up in the morning. and i had like a barrage of missed calls voicemails texts. from delivery drivers there was like a papa john's guy. hey, i'm here with your order. hello. hello the suspects taunting him with this text. did you like the tow trucks the

next day? it doesn't stop his phone blowing up with texts and calls from chicago, san diego upstate, new york, brooklyn and new england all places where my extended family lives. everly says this continued intermittently over the course of several years the first wave hitting in march and april of 2020 where hundreds of fake doordash delivery orders were made in his name all across the country because this is not cool man his phone overwhelmed with voicemails like this and you know a lot of time i really says the suspects even researched the names and addresses of his extended. family, so his daughter mom sister and all of his in-laws became bombarded with non-stop food delivery sent to their house even his own office at netflix all these angry people were trying to find chris everly to give him his his pizzas except i didn't order them. after a barrage of angry callers

and threatening. texts suspects hit even closer to home. friends son everly got an urgent call and email warning his son's elementary school. was placed on lockdown due to a threat of an active shooter nearby turned out to be moreno avenue his former address. he spoofed my number so it looked like these calls were coming from my mobile number even though they weren't and they called 911 the person who called said that they had killed their girlfriend. they were barricaded inside the house that they gave the address my former address and said they would kill anybody who came close to the house. the suffix were swatting which is when someone makes a fake call to 911 to get a large police presence to a particular address. every emergency services vehicle in palo alto. it's from stanford sort of descended on our previous residents all of this over social media handle. that's right. all this for social media handles that i assume they were just going to take and sorry try to either try to sell us. there's a black market for

social media handles turns out chris is not alone everly and other victims formed a support group called handle heroes and contacted the fbi investigate the harassment. what can you do? if you're in this this person or anybody you're sort of helpless tech ceo ben baharan specializes on social media market research and trend an alysis explains. there's a growing black market for where social media handles. how do they get this much information and this much leverage over someone based on again public information right and to know where you live to know where your family as i mean, that's one frightening to begin with but let alone that they that there's that much. desire right to take an account or achieve an account and now two years later. the people behind this still won't stop it still happening as recently as a couple of weeks ago. my mom received, you know a pizza order at her house in in my name. my my in-laws the same thing.
