reporter: president biden just left his home in delaware headed for kentucky. he boarded marine one within the last 15 minutes. in kentucky today, president biden and the first lady will survey damage caused by flooding last month. they will also visit with some of the families who lost loved ones in the storms. meanwhile, cleanup efforts are just beginning in death valley. the national park saw a nearly years worth of rain in just three hours over the weekend. flooding washed out roads and services inside the park. >> it sounded like the world was ending. just this rushing water everywhere. in a place that's usually bone dry. it's pretty incredible. reporter: across the country in atlanta, 3 1/2 inch of rain fell in six hours. similar problems in brooklyn, arkansas. in denver a dozen people had to be rescued after flash flooding there. there's still some flooding there this morning.

kumasi: thank you. this morning, students in the east bay are getting ready for the first day of the new school year. oakland unified will welcome thousands of kids back to the classroom. oakland is struggling to hire enough qualified teachers to fill positions. abc 7 news reporter ryan curry is live in oakland. >> reporter: good morning. last i spoke with a district, they said they were looking to hire around 40 to 50 positions still. those efforts will continue ongoing throughout the school year. their only biggest problem is that their school season starts today. of course, their efforts are falling short of where they would like to be for the start of the year. of course, they're not alone. many other districts across the bay area are also experiencing some pretty significant staffing shortages right now. this is leading to a competitive application pool among the districts. lot of them having to really fight to see which one ty ca

re which teachers they can hire. ousd has made efforts to try to hire teacher. their social media channels are full of ads asking for people to apply to the district. they are asking parents and people within their own district to try to ask them to see if they can get teachers to apply. oakland unified say they start paying teachers for the credential and assessment fees. over the past five years, they say they had around 500 teacher vacancies annually. many applicants hold emergency out of state credential. this is something that they are experiencing all across the bay area. with their timely matters, they are more prevalent given they are starting school than more districts. they are pushing to get more teachers hired as soon as poll. we're live in oakland, ryan curry, abc 7 news. reggie: police are investigating a crash that caused some serious damage to a furniture store.

this happened at 10:45 last night on east 14th street. a car ended up sharking right -- smashing right into the window. there's a lot of broken glass. the impact of the crash left a street light partially sticking out of the store. no word on what may have caused the crash. kumasi: developing news on the effort to put out the mckinney fire. it is the largest fire in the state this year burning more than 60,000 acres 94 the oregon border. four people have died since the fire started. at least 87 home and dozen the other buildings have been destroyed. it's 40% contained. fire crews have been struggling because of weather conditions including winds and thunderstorms. 20 miles wes of the mckinney, firefighters are making good progress slowing down the yeti fire. fire officials say the entire southern edge has been contained and the fire has burned more

attack on a long time san francisco public servant. police arrested the suspect. abc 7 news reporter is live. reporter: less than a week greg chew was attacked from his selma home. police arrested a man in the tenderloin district. take a look, we first told you about the injuries chew suffered on friday after he was attacked near his home at third and folsom streets. chew, who is in his 70's was hit in the face and kick and beaten by a man on a bicycle. yesterday morning police took thrower-year-old derrick yearby in custody in connection with the attack. investigators say video of the attack played an instrumental role in making this arrest after officers recognized the suspect out in public. >> lot of people were concerned about this incident. we have arrested the suspect.

just let people know that, especially when we have good witnesses and good photo and surveillance, that really help us us to identify these suspect. reporter: at this point in time, yearby is not facing hate crime charge. police say they are interviewing the suspect now to determine whether racial bias had anything to do with the assault. earlier this year, san francisco reported a 567% increase in anti-asian hate crimes in 2021. san francisco supervisor matt dorsey is speaking out on this in a statement, he said, we must all do more to stop these attacks and one way to deter violence like this is to send a strong message to would-be attackers that they'll be brought to justice in san francisco. your bee -- yearby is in county jail facing felony charges. police are still considering this to be an open

back to school season. oakland unified school get things started with first day of classes this morning. reggie: there's one concern. there's a lack of teacher on thr and staff shortages across the bay area. still, dozens of openings remain in oakland as kids are going back to school. kumasi: this morning abc 7 news reporter ryan curry is live what this may mean. reporter: it's always that fun feeling when you get to go back to school after a long summer break to see everybody come back again. here we are facing a staffing shortage for o usd as they try to figure out how to get teachers in the classrooms for the upcoming school year. they tried many effort but there are lot of factors that are causing them to do some desperate measures to get these positions hired.

of a southwest jet. no one was hurt. there were no passenger on the southwest jet. but, the southwest jet's wing was damaged. southwest says that this aircraft involved is now out of service in order to make necessary repairs. reggie: now for morning minute report. california dmv is accused tesla of false advertising of about the self-driving technology. the dmv is taking issue of the claim on the website, that says all you need to do is get in the car and tell it where to go. there's concerns about the names of products like auto pilot that insinuate the cars are fully driverless. last year, senators call on the ftc to investigate tesla of misleading advertisement. the dmv tesla needs to to do more oeducate. demand for grocery delivery services taken a tumble. grocery delivers in june were down 26% from 2020.
