kathy shupman. she was one of the agency's fire lookouts. officials say she guide in her home in the small town where many homes were destroyed. that fire is the largest in this state this year. started july 29th. it has burned 60,000 acres. it is 40% contained. new study shedding the light of the dangers of dry lightning during wildfire season. researchers from the national lightning detection network says it sparked four out of seven of the fires in the past few years. it happens during storms in extreme drought areas where the air is dry and rain evaporating. experts expect dry lightning to become frequent and the danger more extreme. >> happening today activists are demanding action to slow the spread of monkeypox. they will hold a protest in 30 minutes to advocate for more testing, treatments and vaccine doses.

organizers say local and federal emergency declarations are the first step. they want officials to look ahead to longer term needs like increasing vaccine production. the protest will be outside the health and human services offices in san francisco federal building. >> they will open the monkeypox clinic tomorrow. the city received 10,000 doses of vaccines from the federal supply. that's more than double the previous allotments. it will hold a walk-in clinic tomorrow through friday. kaiser ucff will provide doses but appointments are required. >> today was the if internal revenue service day back to school for the oakland unified school district. hundreds of families saw the kids return to class but the district is in need of dozens of teachers. they spoke with parents about the upcoming school year. >> how we doing? >> backpacks full, shoelaces tied and the iconic first day of

singer and actress olivia newton john passed a he way in her home in southern california. her husband says she was surrounded by family and friends. newton john battled breast cancer for decades. her cancer went into remission twice but came back twice. she was 73 years old. >> back in the base leandro police are investigating a crash that caused serious damage to a furniture store last night on east 14th street. the car as you can see went right through the window. it is unclear if anybody was hurt. a lot of broken glass. the impact of the knocked down a streetlight. no word on what may have caused the crash or if the driver will be charged. a woman accused of running a red light and causing a fiery crash that killed six people in southern california will face murder charges. the reporter with our sister station in los angeles covered the announcement by the district attorney's office and has reaction from the father of the one of the victims. >> the district attorney holding

-- >> the suspect nicole linton was hospitalized over the crash but over the weekend booked into jail. surveillance video shows the tragedy. she was speeding in a mercedes when she ran a red light. she slammed into several vehicles. it caused a fireball that killed six people. >> preliminary investigation shows linton may have been traveling at approximately 90 miles per hour when she run through a solid red light. if convicted as charged, ms. linton faces up to 90 years to life in prison. >> he says she needs to be held responsible. >> i want to see justice is made regardless something for her to pay back for what she's done. maybe then i can forgive her, but -- not now. she took my son away from me. and i know i won't ever see him.

americans want to control congress. >> at the same time when it comes to the economy americans do not have a positive view of how president biden is doing. two-thirds of americans think the economy is getting worse. in washington, abc news. >> let's get a first check of the weather with mike nicco. we have temperature reduction taking place. at least from what you normally expect in the summertime. >> exactly. it can't last very long this time of the year. some of us will warm and maybe need the air conditioners later on but enjoy this wonderful weather while we have it. let's take a look. you can see just about a half hour ago it was completely clear of clouds. the clouds are trying to reorganize and make their way back and they will. but most of us will see a gorgeous sun set even from most offous beaches. enjoy that. that is a rarity normally this time of year. good sleeping weather. temperatures falling into the 50s and 60s. it will be mostly comfy. it will be a minor warming trend for the inland neighborhoods but

it will be a little warmer than last weekend. especially in our inland neighborhoods right now a couple of things to look at on our current temperatures. look at the ocean temperature. 62 degrees. that's what the lack of upwelling is doing. it is warming up the temperature and conversely look at san francisco 68. normally we would be cooler with a breeze coming off that water but that's not the case because the water is warmer than normal. 70s and 80s just about everywhere. it is breezy as you would expect. gusting anywhere from 10-35 miles per hour in the usually spots will be gusty through 9:00 from the golden gate all the way into the delta but that refreshing breeze is why it feels so nice outside. also the reason why we completely removed the clouds from the marine layer, look how dry the air is over top of us and this area of low pressure will keep the dry air over us. we should see plenty of sunshine at the coast and it will get cloudier and cloudier. all the activity returned. thunderstorm activity back to the seer yeah.

here's a live look at half dome and showers and thunderstorms around it but not in the park right now thankfully. we have mostly clear conditions out there. in fact look at this from the golden gate bridge. temperatures up 66. look at those winds. not as agrs i have beenation they could be. 11-18 miles per hour. during the evening we will start off in the 60s and 70s and hold that through 9:00. by 10:00 clouds will start returning. we will be in the 61-67 degree range. on our way down to about 54 to 62 tonight with a broken deck of clouds, especially inlabld, not all of us will be covered by clouds. we will peel back that cloud cover, sunshine and upper 70s to low 80s. 77 to 82 in the south bay. along the coast mid to upper 60s here. to even near 70 in san francisco. i think we will fall short. temperatures through the north bay 77 to 82. for the east bay 72 at berkeley. 74 at richmond to 77 in union

arbery have been given second life sentences. travis mcmichael and his father gregory were sentenced for federal hate crime convictions. their neighbor was sentenced to 35 years in prison on federal hate crime convictions. all three men were sentenced to life in prison back in january for arbery's murder. they have been denied any chance of parole. >> president biden made his first trip since getting out of covid isolation traveling to eastern kentucky to survey the damage of recent severe flooding there. the death toll stands at 37 but thousands of people remain displaced. thousands more still have no power, no running water. the president and first lady jill biden visited with some of the impacted families telling them they are not alone. >> this happened in america. american problem. and we are all americans. everybody has an obligation to help. we have the capacity to do this.
