this morning, new details after the fbi executed a search warrant at former president trump's home at his mar-a-lago resort yesterday morning. in a statement, trump confirmed the search saying, quote, they overnight abc news could not - confirm that allegation. sources say the search was related to 15 boxes of documents trump took to mar-a-lago from the white house. according to the national archives, the xe in his statement trump called the search, quote, prosecutorial misconduct and a weaponization of the justice system. but while on the campaign trail in 2016, trump promised to enforce all laws concerning the protection of classified information. >> in my administration, i'm going to enforce all laws concerning the protection of classified information. no one will be above the law. >> reporter: last night, the former president was seen

leaving trump tower in new york giving a thumb's up to reporters calling in to a rally for sarah palin last night, trump alluded to the events at mar-a-lago. >> another day in paradise. this was a strange day. >> reporter: trump's allies overnight slamming the fbi. >> all of a sudden on no notice they send 20 cars and 30 agents. sean, i mean this is just more political persecution of donald j. trump. >> reporter: house minority leader kevin mccarthy saying, the department of justice has reached an intolerable state of weaponized politicization. attorney general garland, preserve your documents and clear your calendar. while many are criticizing the search, fbi director christopher wray is himself a republican nominated by trump. overnight we spoke to legal experts to get their perspective on the implications of this search. >> an enormous amount of planning. this must have been going on for weeks. this must be the most vetted, the most comprehension hencively

vetted and scrubbed application for a search warrant in the history of search warrants. the fact that the department did not go the subpoena route but rather went the search warrant route is pretty strong evidence that nobody there was prepared to take the chance that with a subpoena with the opportunity to destroy evidence that the former president wouldn't destroy it. >> that's how stupid you sound. >> reporter: hours after news about the search broke, crowds of trump supporters and critics gathered outside mar-a-lago. >> you're just mad because you're pathetic. >> a senior official tells abc news that the secret service was notified by the fbi before agents arrived at mar-a-lago, and the secret service validated the search warrant. we spoke to abc news contributor kan nawaday, a former federal prosecutor to get his thoughts on the fbi's actions. he spoke to our linsey davis. >> we know that some judge out there probably in the southern district of florida has found that there may be evidence of a crime existing at trump's residence. i think the indication is that

it's moving forward. they are taking active action and following the leads and following the evidence. you know, we've already had search warrants of trump adjacent persons like john eastman. their items have been searched. it's only's matter of time that they'll work up the chain to other potential targets. the next steps are going to be whether the fbi's found what they were looking for. they'll look through everything they found and see if that leads to other crimes, other individuals who they can be targeting. >> with that let's turn now to abc's ike ejiochi with some of the other developing headlines related to former president trump, as well as the january 6th investigation, ike. >> reporter: that's right, andrew. "the new york times" maggie haberman has claimed former president trump has flushed handwritten presidential documents down the toilet and now we're seeing images for the first time. axios was first to publish the photo that reportedly shows papers in a white house toilet and a toilet from an overseas

trip. abc news has not authenticated these and unclear what they appear to be but appear to be written in trump's handwriting. haberman reported that trump would routinely tear up documents that were supposed to be preserved under the presidential records act and flushed them sometimes clogging a white house toilet. meanwhile, a separate development, this time concerning the january 6th investigation. today the january 6th committee is expected to interview former secretary of state mike pompeo. he could provide testimony about discussions within trump's cabinet about using the 25th amendment to remove trump from office after the capitol riot and on the other development concerning january 6th, word that text messages from radio host and conspiracy theorist alex jones have now been turned over to the january 6th committee. jones attended the rally that day, but he insists he was not involved in the planning of the riot. andrew. >> ike ejiochi there for us in washington, thank you. and stay with abc news for

continuing coverage of the investigation at mar-a-lago with new details throughout the day on the abc news app. the u.s. has announced its single biggest commitment to ukraine since the beginning of the war. it is sending $1 billion in new military aid plus another economic package of 4.5 billion. that brings the total u.s. assistance so far to $18 billion. meanwhile, the pentagon says up to 80,000 russian troops have been killed or wounded since the war began in february. back here at home police in new mexico have identified the most recent victim amid concerns about a possible serial killer targeting muslim men in albuquerque. 25-year-old naheem hussein was found shot late friday. hussein's was the third in ten days. authorities searching for a gray volkswagen described as a vehicle of interest in the investigation. the father and son convicted of chasing and killing ahmaud arbery in georgia in 2020 have now received a second life sentence. travis mcmichael, his father greg and neighbor william

"roddie" bryan were convicted in their federal hate crimes trial of targeting arbery because he was black. bryan got 35 years in prison. now to the weather and the cruel summer americans from coast to coast have been experiencing. the extreme conditions not letting up. as blistering heat, a historic drought and record flooding impact millions across the u.s., new data from the national oceanic and atmospheric administration shows just how extreme this summer's weather has been. noaa reports last month the average temperature for the lower 48 states reached 76.4%, 2.8 degrees higher than average making last month the third warmest on record in the u.s. only july 2012 and july 1936 were warmer. for texas last month was the warmest on record, temperatures topping 110 putting the electric grid on the brink
