probably not happen here. want to damper on a vacation? he said it is a nice neighborhood which is why they thought it could not happen here. yeah, there could be an alternative to getting your windows smashed presumed thieves are leaving notes on cars giving people two options pay or get your car broken into abc 7 news reporter loose pena spoke with a woman who found the flyer on her windshield a month ago and is now coming forward to let others know about this. it's a story you'll see only abc 7 news loose. dan before we even get to the story sfpd's urging people not to send money if you have received the flyer. you're about to see we know that at least one person did send money and when he comes to tracing who is behind us in some cases is nearly impossible. is extortion the solution that's the question marcia stefan was hit with after finding this flyer on her windshield when parked near usf. i was i was actually a little
6:01 pm
scared a little rattled. i didn't know if they were going to come back to break into my car or anyone else's car. the flyer says i don't want to steal anymore, but i still have bills to pay. can you help me please? the person goes on to list three modern ways that you can pay them be a cash app bitcoin and paypal. were you afraid that if you didn't pay that you were gonna get your car broken into? yeah. absolutely. absolutely it was it was something i had to consider every time i came to work and actually just adjusting the way i parked and where i parked so it did affect me and it still does marsha looked around and noticed multiple cars had the same flyer. she says car breakings around the area happened frequently specially during the holidays even though she decided not to pay her co-worker who also got the flyer did send money. i felt extorted in some ways.
6:02 pm
yeah, like if i didn't give them money, are they going to come back? we showed the flyer to a cyber security expert who said this type of crime involving crypto and apps are in some cases hard to trace bitcoin is a cryptocurrency based on a blockchain so it while it is impossible to know who's behind a specific quality. you can still follow traces and see which transactions with rich which wallet. we also contacted paypal who confirmed the account is real and said, in part any illegal behavior is a direct violation of the paypal user agreement and any violations of this nature will result in an account being terminated. we took the flyer to sfpd who said this is the first time they have seen this criminal approach, but confirmed san francisco is experiencing an uptake in auto burglaries. so the uptick at this point compared to last year which are auto burglaries as well as
6:03 pm
larcenes or thefts that are occurring in any any retail establishment or any kinds of thefts that maybe off of a person are at about 16% higher compared to last year silver lining the person behind the flyer has manners and signed the flyer with a thank you. it's ridiculous. they're getting very creative. now after investigating this account, we can confirm that paypal is taking action to terminate this person's account. i also reached out to an email address on the flyer to give this person an opportunity to explain but haven't heard back then that is so ridiculous you mentioned in the first for the first time really that sfpd is hearing about this approach from an alleged thief. what do they know so far? well, there are many cameras in the area and sfd said they're investigating this case, but they also haven't confirmed if the person behind this flyer is in fact a suspect of crimes in the city. that's a new twist on an old crime around here. thanks. definitely.
