east bay valleys, hills, and include santa clara east hills and mountains. this excessive heat watch in effect and we expect high temperatures to range from 100 to 105 on tuesday. here's a look at the progression of temperatures. tuesday will be the peak of the heating with numerous locations well above 100. we will have a look at the complete forecast in a few minutes. dion: sounds good. thanks. to the north bay, scary moments for a dozen people on board a ride that got stuck at the napa town & country fair. it happened saturday night. napa firefighters had to rescue the riders with their latter. they were stuck in the air for at least 30 minutes. j.r. stone talked to organizers and to kids who were on the ride when it broke down. >> good idea. >> that is crazy. we were stuck at the top of a

ride. j.r.: jacob describing and recording the moment he got stuck on the rampage ride with his friend. it happened saturday night at the napa town & country fair. >> no one really told us what was going on until the firefighter got up there. >> they just left us whirling up there. they didn't tell us they broke down. j.r.: they were two of the 12 people who had to be rescued by firefighters. >> the operators attempted to get it down and they could not bring it all the way down to the station. we have the ladder truck come out and evac. j.r.: no one was hurt before or during the rescue but jacob's family says one little girl was shaken up. >> she was crying, on the ground shaking like a leaf. j.r.: organizers say this ride got stuck at the end of the night. it was going to be the last ride of the night. once organizers realized there was a problem, they contacted authorities with the goal of

sonoma county sheriff's deputies in geyserville. the sheriff's office has released video from body worn cameraputies shot and killed a 36-year-old on july 29. investigators say he was carrying a rug, hammer and a tiller. he's accused of breaking a window, forcibly car dragging a truck, and leading deputies on a 45 minute chase. that is when deputies approached chavez, ordered him to drop the tools in english and spanish. >> drop it now! >> put it down! [yelling] >> put it down. dion: the sheriff's office says chavez picked up a big rock and pulled his arm back towards deputies. one deputy fired his taser but did not disable the man. the other deputy then fatally shoots chavez. the sonoma county d.a. and rosa

county police are investigating. a search of the oakland estuary for a passenger who jumped from the san francisco bay ferryboat earlier today has been called offer the night. passengers witnessed the person jump into the estuary before 4:00 this afternoon. the crew began rescue procedures and radio for help. firefighters responded along with the u.s. coast guard. so far, there has been no sign of that individual. only on abc seven, an asian owned sandwich shop in san francisco's tenderloin district is under siege. burglars have been targeting the business at least twice a week now for the past several months. it has gotten so bad at lee's sandwiches, every window up front has been boarded up with plywood. inside, merchandise has even been cleared off shelves for safekeeping. the executive director of the tenderloin merchants association says the burglars have stolen hundreds of dollars in

merchandise and caused major damage to property. it says it has opted so -- it has happened so often, they have stopped calling police. >> our sense in the community is that the asian community is an easy target because it is safe to steal from them. you know you will not get hurt and you are not going to get caught. dion: renee colorado says the burglars have also figured out when the association's community investors patrol the neighborhood. those ambassadors have recently started wearing bulletproof vests even after one was held at gunpoint. the group is asking the mayor for more funding to expand the program and calling on supervisor dean preston for support. a development kiely rodni. the 16-year-old was wearing a white hoodie that looks like

this, that is according to the placer county sheriff's office. the sweatshirt has the phrase "odd future" written all over it. nine days of searches have come up empty-handed. thousands of kaiser mental health care workers in the bay area in northern california say they will go on strike in a few hours. the clinicians are demanding kaiser boost staffing. abc7news reporter cornell barnard has details. cornell: picket signs are being constructed at the emeryville headquarters of the union representing nearly 2000 kaiser mental health workers who plan to strike on monday. many say they are burned out. >> we are here because kaiser has been completely negligent in how it is allowing us to work with our patients. cornell: the union is demanding the health care provider increased staffing to help treat an influx of new and established patients seeking appointments for psychologists, therapists,

and chemical dependency counselors. >> we've got patients waiting to, 3, 4 months for the next appointment. we all know you cannot do any psychotherapeutic care when you have wait times like that. cornell: a new state law requires timely access to health care within two weeks in some cases. the strike threat comes after a bargaining session ended saturday with a tentative agreement on a wage increase for clinicians for issues over staffing and working conditions kept both sides from reaching a deal. kaiser permanente said the strike is another necessary tactic to increase the -- unnecessary tactic to increase their leverage. the union says about 20% of clinicians have left kaiser. >> we cannot continue to do the pace in a post-pandemic time when mental health has become a national crisis, a national crisis. kaiser still not stepping up. cornell: in december 2019, 4000

mental health workers launched a strike demanding kaiser shortened patient wait times and produce therapist caseloads. unlike that action, monday's action is open-ended and could go on indefinitely. in emeryville, cornell barnard. dion: also tomorrow, nurses at st. mary's medical center in san francisco will hit the picket line in an effort to increase the hospitals nursing staff. the one-day informational ticket is set to start at 1 p.m. at the hospital. nurses say there's a chronic nursing shortage that jeopardizes patient safety. they say since a merger in 2019 to become, they have seen a dramatic decline in staffing. common spirit did not respond to the request for comments. still ahead, it's been one year since the taliban took over afghanistan. hear from the woman behind a bay area organization that is still trying to change lives. and a little later, an update on

dion: a monkeypox vaccination clinic will open tomorrow at zuckerberg san francisco hospital. sf general and kaiser permanente held walking clinics yesterday after the city received about 10,000 doses. sf general says it administered 822 doses yesterday and all walk-ins were served. the monkeypox vaccine clinic will open again tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. ucsf health is providing vaccines as well even for those who are not ucsf patients. we do have everything you need to know about monkeypox

which is pretty warm at this hour of the night. one more live view from the rooftop camera. you can see because there is no movement in the trees, the absence of any significant breeze. the forecast features -- patchy, coastal fog will develop. warm to hot the next three days with excessive heat watch in effect in some areas on tuesday. it will be in effect from tuesday morning through tuesday evening for all these areas and read where high temperatures will range from 100 to 105 degrees, including the interior north bay mountains. includes the interior east bay valleys, hills. it also includes the santa clara east hills and mountains. a wide area covered by this heat advisory. remember, if you have exposure to the heat, you do have the risk of some heat related illnesses. try to stay cool and hydrated. overnight, a little patch of fog

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7news. dion: there is a push for an intel ensures review following the fbi's raid on former president trump's mar-a-lago home. it comes as there are growing concerns about threats directed at law enforcement. here's our abc reporter. >> amid concerns over the security implications of highly classified intelligence that was founded former president trump's mar-a-lago estate, democratic lawmakers have asked the director of national intelligence to do a damage assessment. the fbi seized 11 sets of documents from the former president residence, including one set marked top-secret. a classification resort from some of the nation's most sensitive intelligence. adam schiff telling cbs. >> some of the markets were marked top-secret. that is among the highest activation in terms of the

the congressional visit. moving on to developing news from illinois. three people have been wounded by gunfire in the parking lot of a six flags great america theme park. investigators say the shooter drove away. two of the wounded were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. the third victim declined to be treated. the amusement park is located 45 miles north of chicago. the victims were targeted. author salman rushdie is off a ventilator and speaking. he was stabbed several times on friday during a lecture in western new york. mpd assasss are calling it an lose an eye and the nerves in an arm were severed. a 34-year-old from new jersey has been charged. >> new york state will always stand up to protect freedom of expression, freedom of speech, and we condemn the cowardly

attack on salman rushdie. dion: rushdie's 1980 book is considered by some muslims to be insulting to islam. iran's ayatollah called for his death more than 30 years ago. the suspect has shown support for the iranian regime, according to investigators. anne heche's family says the actress was taken off life support today. she was declared brain-dead several days ago but kept on brain support until a recipient for organ donation could be found. eche was severely injured when her car slammed into a house in los angeles nine days ago. the criminal investigation was closed on friday after heche was declared brain-dead. at least 41 people are dead and 45 injured after a fire corrupted at a church in egypt sunday morning. 19 children lost their lives. 5000 people were in attendance at the coptic christian church

dion: the hot august nile's car show has rolled into fremont. car lovers turned out from all across california. it is the second car show put on by the association. nearly 400 cars entered into today's car show, so made as early as the 1920's. car enthusiasts enjoyed live music and goods from local vendors. it is known as one of the best car shows in the bay area. education is part of building a better area. and in marin county, a school district is bucking the trend on declining enrollment. just months after pink slips were sent out to dozens of teachers, an influx of new students has forced the district or change course. cornell barnard explains what's behind the jump. >> just being able to meet the kids at the door and see their

beautiful faces, it is exciting to have that opportunity to be a part of their lives. cornell: angela is a fourth-grade teacher. she's ready to welcome new students next week, and this year, it will be a full house. >> i have 29 this year. cornell: she teaches at pleasant valley elementary school where a big jump in enrollment happened over the summer. almost 50 new students. >> the most challenging thing is having more bodies in the classroom. just making sure that we differentiate enough so we have. cornell: the news gets better districtwide. faced with declining enrollment and budget cuts, nevada unified has seen an enrollment increase of nearly 300 students. >> we are super excited to have increased enrollment at pleasant valley because a lot of the kids are returning from private school and there are a lot of new kids moving into the neighborhood. cornell: the expansion of transitional kindergarten classes along with fewer covid

restrictions has brought many families back to public school. >> while i am excited for her to have the opportunity -- cornell: catherine says her daughter is starting in a marine school of the arts program. >> it is the opposite of the district where we are residents, which has a declining enrollment and sort of enjoying more space. cornell: statewide, california schools are at risk of losing funds due to declining enrollment. in 2018-2019, california schools lost about 23,000 students. between 2020 and 2021, public school enrollment dropped nearly seven times that figure with more than 160,000 students dropping out. layoff notices issued last january to about 30 teachers have now been rescinded. >> we are so excited to welcome all of our kids back on tuesday. cornell: cornell barnard,
