what's behind the new trend and what it means. and the new study that says cheerios are better for you than coffee. it's monday, august 15th. good monday morning, everyone. i'm mona kosar abdi. >> and i'm rhiannon ally, in for andrew. we want to begin this morning with the growing fallout over the fbi search at mar-a-lago. as officials warn in a spike in threats against law enforcement. democrats are now calling for a review of the classified documents seized from former president trump's estate. >> they're voicing concerns that some of the nation's most sensitive data may have fallen into the wrong hands. justin finch has the latest from washington. >> reporter: here in washington, growing interest in how those documents were able to leave the white house, who has seen or handled them, and if there could be national security repercussions. california congressman

adam schiff now among the number of democrats calling for the director of national intelligence to carry out a damage assessment in the wake of the fbi search of former president trump's mar-a-lago home. >> some of those documents were marked top secret, sensitive compartmented information, that's among the highest designation in terms of the extremely grave damage to national security that could be done if disclosed. >> reporter: now unsealed the warrant showing agents looking for evidence for three potential crimes, include obstruction of justice and violations of the espionage act. the former president hasn't been charged and claims the files were declassified. the fbi seizing 11 sets of classified documents including one set marked top secret sci, a classification reserved for some of the nation's most sensitive intelligence.

>> they want to know if any of the material removed from the white house and brought to former president trump's house has been compromised in any way. >> reporter: now some republicans are calling on the justice department to release more information. >> i think releasing the affidavit would help, at least that would confirm that there was justification for this raid. >> reporter: before the fbi search details were released many republicans slammed the justice department and fbi with claims of partisanship and abuse of power. >> the fbi raid of president trump is an over-reach of its authority. >> reporter: now increasing anxiety about threats to law enforcement. in arizona over the weekend a small group of trump supporters, small armed, gathered outside the phoenix fbi office. as we learn more about the justice department probe many democrats and republicans are calling for calm and condemning threats or harm to law enforcement. rhiannon. >> justin, thank you for that. and the search at mar-a-lago is raising new questions about

trump's legal peril. the documents reveal trump is under investigation for obstruction of justice, a much more serious charge compared to violating the espionage act. >> this espionage act, it has the word "espionage" in it, but the truth is, when it comes to potential criminal sentences the obstruction of justice statute is the one with the most potential prison time, there you're talking about up to 20 years behind bars. so these are not sort of minor crimes we're talking about here, we're talking about the potential for serious felonies with regard to all three of the crimes being investigated. >> experts say an obstruction of justice statute could apply if the documents were relevant to an investigation. now to the new warning on climate change. experts say it's only a matter of time before a "megaflood" hits california, displacing millions of people. it all comes as the west coast

gets hit with extreme heat and monsoon rains. this morning, millions of people are on alert for extreme weather. from monsoon rains to extreme heat. triple-digit temperatures today are expected in kansas, texas, arizona and california. california's central valley region is expected to hit 105 or more this week, prompting an excessive heat watch for more than 7 million people. meanwhile, 9 million americans are under flash flood warnings as the southwest braces for more monsoon rains. over the weekend, flash flooding closed down roads and forced evacuations in utah. in texas, the desperately needed rain fell in massive amounts, roads in corpus christi flooded after a half a foot of rain fell in the area. back in california, mudslides and flooding forced

road closures in san bernardino county. experts say the chances of a so-called megaflood hitting california have doubled. a new study shows that climate change is increasing the likelihood of a cataclysmic flood hitting in the next 50 years, the flood could turn california's lowlands into an inland sea. putting parts of cities sacramento, fresno and los angeles under water. the study predicts a megaflood would displace 5 million to 10 million people and cause a trillion-dollar damages. terrifying moments at a amusement park in illinois. after gunfire forced people to run for cover. three people were shot, hurt after shots were fired from the parking lot at six flags great america in gurney. authorities say the shooting wasn't a random act but targeted. no word yet on arrest or motive. breaking overnight, iran has issued its first reaction to salman rushdie. making progress after friday's

inside the main maternity and children's hospital inside kabul. bear in mind, this is the best funded, best equipped hospital of its kind in afghanistan and even here the need is overwhelming. >> the white house is blasting a scathing report by house republicans on the u.s. pullout from afghanistan. the report blames bad decisionmaking and poor planning for the deaths of 13 american troops in kabul. a pennsylvania community is facing yet another tragedy, police charged adrian oswaldo with two counts of criminal homicide, accusing him of driving a car into a crowd of people holding a fund-raising effort. one person was killed. 17 others injured. that fund-raiser was for the victims of a house fire that killed ten people earlier this mother. he was also charged with the murder of his 56-year-old mother, police say she was struck by a vehicle and assaulted with a hammer. it's time now for a look at your morning weather.

actress anne heche has died more than a week after a devastating and fiery car crash in los angeles. a representative said she had been peacefully taken off life support. the emmy-winning actress was known for movies -- movie roles in "6 days 7 nights" and "wag the dog." she also made headlines for her personal life including a high-profile romance with ellen degeneres. heche was 53. alec baldwin is standing by his story that he did not pull the trigger in the fatal shooting on a new mexico movie set. but fbi testing appears to conflict with baldwin's version of how the tragedy unfolded. abc's derrick dennis has more. >> reporter: this morning actor alec baldwin's account of the deadly shooting last year on the

new mexico set of the movie "rust" is being partially contradicted by a new fbi analysis. >> two people accidentally shot on a movie set by a prop gun. we need help immediately. >> reporter: baldwin in a televised interview in december adamant he never pulled the trigger that killed 42-year-old cinematographer halyna hutchins. >> well, the trigger wasn't pulled. >> so you never pulled the trigger? >> no, no, no, no, no. i would never point a gun at anyone and pull a trigger. never. >> reporter: now the fbi says their tests on the firearm found the gun could not be made to fire without a pull of the trigger. and that of the four people tested the only prints that were found on the ammunition box were from two of "rust" armorer hannah gutierrez reed's fingers. responding to the report, a lawyer for gutierrez reed tells abc news she's being used as a scapegoat. the fbi also writing the manner of hutchins' death is best classified as an accident. a new statement from baldwin's attorney reads, "the critical

report is the one from the medical examiner, who concluded that this was a tragic accident. this is the third time the new mexico authorities have found that alec baldwin had no authority or knowledge of the allegedly unsafe conditions on the set. that he was told by the person in charge of safety on the set that the gun was cold and believed the gun was safe." the statement goes on to say, "the fbi report is being misco misconstrued. the gun fired in testing only one time without having to pull the trigger, when the hammer was pulled back and the gun broke in two different places. the fbi was unable to fire the gun in any prior test, even when pulling the trigger, because it was in such poor condition." the santa fe county district attorney continues to investigate, saying nothing is off the table. >> there's no evidence that this was intentional. this was clearly an accident. but perhaps a criminal accident. just because something is an accident doesn't mean that a

[ yelling ] videos show multiple referees trying to calm a man on the field. several other adults are seen in a brawl on a separate area of the field. seconds later, shots can be heard in the background.
