live from abc news in new york, this is "good morning america". good morning, america. great to have you with us on this sunday. we begin with the millions of americans under threat of monsoon rain in southwest, places like arizona and new mexico hit especially hard this weekend and the severe weather is heading east. >> flash flooding is a major concern in texas as the heavy rain hits that drought-stricken state. but we do begin in new mexico, where flooding rains stranded 150 people at that national park there. abc's morgan norwood joins us with the latest. and, morgan, this morning, those stranded have now been evacuated. >> reporter: yeah, and good news to share with you this morning, officials at the national park say those 150 visitors who were stranded for hours have since been safely evacuated, that happening just a short time ago. but guys, a terrifying ordeal playing out in new mexico, the monsoon rains turning into a rushing river throughout carlsbad national park.

trying to evacuate the area saturday evening but the flash flooding had taken out the main road, stranding about 150 visitors for hours overnight. one family stranded with their young kids walking around and waiting, others asking about food and water, saying at one point the caverns ran out and some people were left starving. this morning, the park say it's closed due to flooding. they'll start clearing the roads. meanwhile, in utah this morning, an urgent search for a missing hiker, rescuers are looking for jetal agnihotri who disappeared after flash flooding in zion national park. her family telling abc news that they found her backpack. but still no signs of jetal. >> that weather creating such a scary situation there, morgan, thank you. that storm moving east, let's check with cheryl scott from wls, our abc station in chicago. texas and other states now bracing for those flooding rains. dangerous flooding, the big

concern this weekend, and it's going to continue for millions here as we head through the next 36 to -- next two days, that flooding threat here, you can see the flood watches in effect all the way from arizona into louisiana where we're looking at several inches of monsoon rain continue here. heavy rain for parts of north central texas. dallas to shreveport. some areas seeing in excess of 5 inches of rainfall, where some isolated spots could see 8-plus inches. flash flooding will be a big concern. eva. >> cheryl scott, thank you. overseas now to the war in ukraine, kyiv saying its forces this weekend hit a military airfield in crimea. abc's britt clennett is in the ukrainian capital where president zelenskyy issued a dire prediction and there's word of a car bomb attack. good morning, britt.

>> reporter: good morning, eva. breaking this morning, the daughter of putin's close ally reportedly killed in a suspicious blast. russia now saying they're investigating as a murder. this morning, the daughter of a close putin ally killed in a car bomb near moscow. russian investigators confirm that she was killed in the blast, her family saying she borrowed her father's car. making that vehicle a target. her father, an ultra nationalist, he's been called putin's brain and a staunch supporter of russia's invasion. the car exploded on a highway as she drove from a russian festival. this morning, ukrainian strikes in russia-occupied crimea. smoke seen rising, a drone was struck down and fell through the roof of russia's black sea fleet headquarters. ukraine has not commented on the strike. "we heard a pop of an explosion, we heard two similar ones yesterday evening when we were walking at the sea front." these strikes come just a week

after a ukrainian attack on a russian air base in crimea destroyed eight fighter jets. this as ukraine nears its independence day. zelenskyy warning that russia could take its already-brutal assault on ukraine even further. in an address, zelenskyy saying russia could try to do something particularly cruel and fall exactly six months to the day russia's invasion of ukraine began. the standoff intensifying. forcing civilians to flee en masse. this evacuation center in zaporizhzhia helping to provide food and temporary shelter for families from the occupied areas. including many young kids. for the local children, for this 9-year-old child, war is now a reality of life. here helping his mother at a volunteer center to weave nets. do you know what this is for?

>> do you like doing this? yes? why do you like it? >> reporter: he's an example of the realities of growing up when your country is at war and six months into the invasion the impacts it will have on kids is still uncertain. whit. >> so hard to see the children still enduring all of this. britt clennett, thank you. we move now to politics and early voting happening ahead of some key primaries this week. abc's white house correspondent maryalice parks is in washington with more on the big races. >> reporter: whit, good morning to you. voters voting in three states on tuesday, in new york, florida, and there's a runoff election in oklahoma. election day just 79 days from today. new york got a new map, which means that some sitting members of congress are actually squaring off each other. congressman jerry nadler and

carolyn maloney, both committee chairs, they're facing off each other. that result will have a big impact in the house. in florida, four democrats are jockeying for the chance to take on republican governor ron desantis. one of the leading candidates is congressman charlie crist, he served as governor of florida more than a decade ago but as a republican. senator marco rubio's also up for re-election this year. representative val demings, has gotten a lot of attention, a former orlando police chief, a few months ago everyone here in washington was gearing up for huge republican wins in november. but the last few days even democrats seem to feel a lot better about their chances across the country, the white house chief of staff saying this week he thought some of these big bills they passed this summer on gun reform, have created a, quote, season of substance that could help democrats. whit.

>> all right, maryalice, thank you. let's bring in abc's chief washington correspondent jonathan karl. good morning. always great to see you. let's start with your exclusive interview with congresswoman liz cheney after her primary defeat. here's what she told you about her plans for the future. >> so this is obviously not the end this is a new beginning for you, you're starting this political organization, what can tell us? what are you going to do? >> also, i'm going to be very focused on working to ensure that we do everything we can not to elect election deniers, that have been nominated for really important positions all across the country. i'm going to work against those people. i'm going to work to support their opponents. i think it matters that much. >> will you be getting involved in campaigns against those republican candidates that are denying the results of the election?

>> yes. >> including your republican colleagues here in congress? >> yes. >> so, jon, how far does cheney plan to take this fight against some of her republican colleagues and could it include a possible presidential run? >> well first in terms of the midterms, she made it very clear she'll be going against republican colleagues in the house and she doesn't believe that kevin mccarthy is fit to be the next speaker of the house, she told me that explicitly, and as for her own political future, president, candidacy, she says she's thinking about it, when someone says that, whit, they're planning to do it, but whether or not she has path within the republican party it's hard to see it, but i wouldn't underestimate liz cheney. she's now the nation's most high profile critic of donald trump. >> jon, i want to ask you about another big story. turning to the fbi search for documents at former president trump's mar-a-lago estate, we could learn more this week when a judge is expected to unseal

part of that affidavit. >> the justice department has fought hard to keep that affidavit sealed. they believe that it would, first of all, there's classified information in the affidavit and also information about their case, their investigation against donald trump, including the sources they have, so if this affidavit gets released, and it looks like it will in some form, it will be heavily redacted. we'll see a lot of black on the pages of this affidavit. but we'll see some of the evidence, some of the justification they presented to that judge for taking that extraordinary step of searching donald trump's residence. >> all right, jon, thank you. plenty to discuss this morning. just a reminder, tune into "this week" later on this morning for more of jon's exclusive interview with representative liz cheney on her political future, the state of the

republican party and the next steps for the january 6th committee. now to the monkeypox york reporting its first case in child. growing concerns, including how the disease may spread on college campus this fall. >> reporter: the white house stepping up its efforts to contain and quell the monkeypox outbreak. rolling out 360,000 vials of vaccine doses. 2 million shots. just under the top layer of skin instead of into deep fatty tissue for the injection. >> we're hearing jurisdictions are very enthusiastically starting this. it's exciting from the perspective of access. >> reporter: just over 14,000 americans have been infected with monkeypox since may. while cases have declined in recent weeks in some initial hot spots like new york city, the u.s. still has the most cases in

the world, with monkeypox identified in 49 states. >> i think i'm just mainly concerned of people's lack of awareness of it. >> reporter: health officials monitoring college campuses nationwide as students return to casses. a doctor with the medical college of wisconsin says it's critical that schools have a plan. >> college students go to dance clubs, they go to raves and they have sex. >> reporter: 93% of cases are still among men who have reported recent sexual contact with other men, but it warns that anyone can be at risk to catch monkeypox. exchanging saliva or body fluids. even touching objects and surfaces contaminated by someone with the virus, although that's rare. health officials now targeting large lgbtq gatherings aross the country. this weekend, 2,000 vaccinations offered at the pride festival in charlotte. nationwide, a million vaccines

have been delivered so far. the federal government also announcing plans to deploy 50,000 vaccine doses to at-risk communities and communities of color that have been disproportionately impacted by this virus, while also this virus, while also having less access to the vaccine. eva. >> mola, thank you so much. now to highway disasters involving vehicles slamming into accident scenes, at least 30 people killed in the wrecks in turkey, abc's lama hassan has more from london. good morning, lama. >> reporter: these horrific series of crashes in turkey are now being investigated, officials are trying to work out what happened in two separate incidents. two vehicles slamming into crowds of people within hours of each other on saturday, killing dozens. in the first incident, a bus plowed into the crash scene killing at least 15 people and you can see that bus on side. with scores of injured passengers strewn across the road. now in the second incident, more than 150 miles away, according to health ministry, the brakes on this truck failed, sending it barrelling into first responders at the site of another traffic accident, killing at least 20 people. the interior ministry says both drivers are now in custody and at this point no reports to suggest that there was a connection between the accidents, but there are still so many questions about these terrifying incidents.

sexual contact. one count of harassment. >> hey, man, we went through this act already. >> reporter: the 78-year-old wildly known for his eccentric and unusual roles including "lethal weapon." "predator 2." ♪ and the buddy holly story back in 1978. he earned an oscar nomination for playing the title role. the monster-mania convention releasing this statement saying, immediately upon receiving a complaint from the attendees, the celebrity guest was removed from the convention and instructed not to return. police haven't released any details on this alleged incident. no word yet from busey or his rep. janai. >> all right, kenneth, thank you. turning now to the crypto craze that's leading a lot of people to jump on the bandwagon, but the government is making sure you know the risks. abc's deirdre bolton is here with more on how the fdic is taking action. >> reporter: so, on friday, the fdic issued a letter to five crypto companies demanding they

stop making false claims about deposit insurance, so there's the list of five, it issued a cease and desist letter. making misleading statements whether assets have federal deposit insurance support. so by law, fdic only insures banking deposits such as cash. so the list of what it doesn't include, well, bonds, stocks, mutual funds, commodities or crypto assets. and of course that's the key here. the head of one company tweeted out, we didn't mean to mislead anyone, we didn't suggest that the company has this kind of crypto that benefit from fdic insurance. by the way, interest in crypto continues to grow despite recent losses, big selloffs. according to bankrate.com, nearly 60 million americans own some form of cryptocurrency last year. despite the losses people are still very interested. which is why the fdic is being a little muscular on this.

and the family sat down exclusively with abc news. and faith abubey is with us. >> reporter: watching that video in its entirety was just something. a pregnant woman, at night on a dark rural road, with her three children in the car, ebony washington said she just wanted to find a safe place to pull over. but the deputy thought it was, quote, shady. >> i thought they were going to shoot her. >> reporter: this morning, a florida family speaking about the terrifying moments a sheriff's deputy pulled a gun on their pregnant mother. >> i'm pregnant, sir. i'm four months pregnant. >> okay. >> reporter: the incident leading to the deputy's resignation, it all started more than a week ago, when deputy jacob desue turned on his siren and flashing lights to pull over ebony washington for speeding. ebony eventually stopping at this gas station. >> you make any movement that will be the last mistake you're going make. >> reporter: the deputy ordering washington out of the vehicle, her three children including her 1-year-old in the car, she then

lot all weekend. heavy rain and the flooding rains in the deep south. we start you off here with a beautiful video, the sunrise here in kansas city just showing that entire rainbow. so a beautiful start to this sunday morning for you, now we're continuing to watch the heavy monsoonal moisture here across parts of northern texas. this continues over the next 24, to 36 hours, which means several inches of rain and flash flooding will be a big concern but that's monsoonal moisture, the tropics have been pretty quiet. we haven't had a named storm since july, we're looking at one of the longest stretches without a named storm. we're still pretty quiet, no named storms on the map right now, but we're monitoring a wave off the coast of africa, 20% chance of development, but something we'll continue to watch. no imminent threat to the u.s., the tropics.

injured, active duty and veteran service members showing their resiliency and dedication in a whole array of adaptive sports. abc's stephanie ramos joins us from orlando with more. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning. it's day two of the warrior games, and i have to tell you, to see the strength, commitment and the resilience of these wounded service members has been so inspiring and the games have another week to go. this morning, the competition is heating up at the 11th department of defense warrior games. the first day of competition started with events including wheelchair rugby, one of the more than a dozen adaptive sports with over 300 athletes, nearly 250 of those athletes are competing for the very first time in the warrior games. heather sealover is on active duty in the air force stationed in louisiana. for more than half her life, she's run long distance from half marathons to 50-mile races, but following a series of

injuries, heather's doctor told her she may never race again. >> going through different surgeries, really kind of beat me down, especially with that inability to participate in the things i used to do, and getting introduced to para-sports for the very first time, most people around me at that time said it's 180 difference. >> reporter: heather overcoming the odds finding her support system along the way. >> for me to participate in a race i always need another person with me, so someone has to dedicate their time to travel with me. >> reporter: we also met mike murphy who suffered a traumatic brain injury while conducting noncombat flight operations in greece, the injury leading to mike losing his vision. what was going through your mind at that point? >> i had plenty of doctors tell me different things. i didn't think i'd be blind. but i guess at that moment it was just like, what's next? >> reporter: mike telling us he turned to alcohol during those
