air quality advisory in effect today. jobina: this year marks the first start for parents and students heading back to school. one appointing is missing, teachers. the most import and thing next to students. ryan curry is live with the action teachers are taking today. ryan: good morning, that is a very important factor when it comes to education in the bay area. trying to make sure you have enough teachers. tonight, there is a rally in support of potentially hiring more teachers. his comes at a time when we are faced with a teaching shortage, they are trying to address that issue. that is happening later on at 6:00 p.m., the rally tonight will focus on the budget at hand. they want 50 million in ongoing city funding, and 70 million in ongoing state funding to hire more educators.

prioro started -- starting, there were around 100 teaching vacancies. now, they say they will continue the hiring efforts. they tried other recruitment methods like hiring positions without credentials than helping you get the credential. but the president of the teachers union says the district needs to be creative and direct with adequate funding to recruit more teachers. this is not so much about a teaching shortage as much as it is paying teachers and giving them the resources they need. that is what the rally tonight will address. reggie: governor newsom just vetoed a bill that would have created the safe supervised drug injection sites in san francisco, oakland and l.a. they say it would help with a drug overdose crisis. a state senator of san francisco

wrote the bill, he calls the feet of devastating and says peer-reviewed studies have shown the sites save lives and help lead to treatment. the san francisco attorney agrees, saying safe injection sites work in new york city. >> i support the idea of a nonprofit moving forward with new york's model of overdose prevention. under the biden administration, the doj has not asked new york sites, run by a nonprofit, to stop operations. reggie: governor newsom said he is concerned about the operation of the sites. the group mothers against drug deaths is praising the decision. >> we have been putting way too many resources and funding into addiction maintenance, not enough resources and funding is going to treatment and rehabilitation. reggie: mothers against drug deaths believes more should be done to staff clinics at san francisco already have, saying methadone clinics are not open 24/7.

they agree but say all the ideas need to be put into place. jobina: most americans want stricter gun laws. a new poll from the ap survey shows people in both parties, 71 percent of americans, want stricter gun laws. that includes half of republicans and the majority of democrats and gun owners. 59% of americans believe there should be a ban on the sale of ar-15's and similar weapons. it was taken in late july and early august, after a string of deadly mass shootings. in fairfield, man is the hospital after he was shot by police. it happened yesterday afternoon. police released these photos. they say the man pulled out what appeared to be a handgun and pointed it at the officers. during a search, officers found five guns that turned out to be bb guns, and another gun was found in the car. fairfield police say they were trying to arrest him on an

outstanding warrant and domestic violence case. reggie: a bay area man accused of trying to derail an investigation of an officer in oakland has been sentenced to 10 years. he faced obstruction of justice charges and a 2020 shooting outside a federal building. he also faced a separate charge for child pornography. he was accused of destroying the groups records. a different man was a member of the group, he was charged with the officers murder and was earlier sentenced to 41 years. jobina: authorities are expected to identify a body found in a nevada county lake as kiely rodni, she disappeared after leaving a party earlier this month. in his statement her family said quote but we accept the sadness cast under deaths shadow, the rising sun shines light upon us,

harry skies -- sunny skies later on today. jobina: fire crews are looking into the cause of a large fire in san jose overnight, take a look at these aggressive flames burning off some sort of storage container. a camera crew said it happened sometime after 2:00 this morning , no word on the extent of the damage. when we find out, we will let you know. reggie: tonight, san francisco unified teachers will rally to retain staff. ryan curry is live with how they want to get it done. ryan: good morning. really, the focus now is figuring out ways they can pay teachers more, as well as hire more teachers. that is with the rally is going to be focusing on. teachers union since the pay has been the big issue, that has been the key factor as to why

the district simply can't hire as many teachers as they want to fill these vacancies. this comes during the rally against a budget, that is what they are examining tonight and trying to focus on. they want to push the district to use $50 million in ongoing city funding and $70 million in ongoing state running to hire more educators. prior to the school year, sfusd had around 100 teaching vacancies. they were able to fill some through staff relocations, but they still plan to hire throughout the school year. teachers union says students deserve to have well-funded schools and fully staffed classrooms with teachers. even some principals have told us in the past they are losing other teachers to other districts. of course, but the district and the teachers union want that to stop. that is what they are rallying tonight, to see if they can put a stop to that.

she believes the solutions have to be multifaceted. >> we have to get guns off the streets. one of the other things i think it's really important is the police need to focus on solving these crimes. tim: until relief comes, many of the local community will continue to live in fear, unsure of how to stop the violence. >> they want to have no more life. they can walk on the street, they can go anywhere. tim: abc 7 news. jobina: this morning, no information about the federal investigation into misconduct allegations by members of the antioch department. the antioch mayor confirmed the fbi and contra costa da office is investigating eight patrol officers. officials first announced the probe in late march, alleging crimes of moral turpitude and other offenses against officers

from antioch and pittsburgh police departments. this is the first time antioch has officially announced the number of officers under investigation. >> we know at some point, either a grand jury, criminal grand jury has been impaneled or will be impaneled. as a result, could increase the number of officers under investigation. jobina: the eight officers represent roughly 1/10 of the city's entire antioch police force. a total of three officers from the pittsburgh police department are also under investigation. reggie: zuckerberg san francisco general will hold another monkeypox vaccine clinic, it opens at 8:00 this morning. yesterday, they gave up more than 400 doses. it comes as monkeypox has been detected in all 50 states. in california, nearly half of cases are right here in the bay area. san francisco has the most with 653. two other counties are also in triple digits.

to a gas station, threatened to spit on the clerk. officers found him nearby and claimed that is when he turned violent. they charged him with battery, assault, resisting arrest and terroristic threatening. >> this is not what our law enforcement community represents, it is not the proper response. they will be reviewed and appropriate action taken. reggie: the attorney for the two deputies say the suspect attacked one of them, giving him a concussion. witnesses say the man was not violent, but was trying to run away. the officers involved have been suspended during the investigation. jobina: we lrng m about ththe op who died in last thursday's plane crash. a 32-year-old was a single piloting a single engine plane during the crash. radio recordings indicate the two pilots involved in communication shortly before the crash.
