100 firefighters from across the city. flames damaged all three floors from the roof of this building. two firefighters suffered minor injuries. one woman and three cats had to be rescued. we spoke with a friend of the woman who had to be rescued and said her friend had done a lot of preparation because a fire like this was her biggest fear. >> she is a hero of the day. she is in the third unit and she has two cats. she was able to get the cats. they were hiding. the smoke was coming through. she had to go to the roof with two cats and climb down the entire ladder to get to safety. we are all just blown away at her bravery and how she got out and of course insanely grateful she got out. >> this is a photo of the rescued woman who managed to get

venice avenue. the blaze broke out about two: 30 and destroyed a historical building belonging to the national park service. the peer was also no longer in use. crews got the blaze under control in 15 minutes. >> now to a developing story out of san mateo county were two people were stuck and spent the night on a cliff side after their car tumbled off the road nearly honda. a man in his 70's tried to rappel down the cliff to help but he could not reach them. chp eventually rescued the couple. we will have more on this still developing story. >> let's go to the south bay. san jose city council members say residents no longer feel safe. >> the problem, police staffing shortages. dustin dorsey looks at a proposed plan to add more money to the police force. >> once deemed the safest big city and of the country, the city of san jose is facing

historic struggles. it is on pace for a record number of traffic deaths and some city councilmembers say there have been slower response times. these issues are exacerbated by the staffing shortages the police department says it is facing. >> when you have a thinly staffed police department losing people to attrition, resignations, retirements, that affects us. national average, 1000 citizens across this country as to officers. we are hovering at one. >> they are down to a thousand total and affirmed officers compared to 1400 at its peak. the department has required overtime for some officers and they have opened up 17 paid overtime patrols to alleviate the need. leaders say that is not enough. >> overtime is not a solution. officers are overworked and build -- and burned out. >> councilmembers planta to call the city to find money to add to

crimes of all kinds rose dramatically in california last year especially against the asian community. according to the state department of justice, there were 1165 report and hate events involving a racial bias in 2021. that is a 33% increase over 2020. of those, there were 513 anti-black or african-american buys events last year. a 12.5% increase. anti-hispanic or latino events totaled 197 in 2021. that is a between nine and a half percent increase. bias events against asians increased the most with 247 reported last year. . that is a staggering 177% increase from the previous year. just as officials were asked why the increase against asian americans was so large. >> no specific research has been done at this point in time to say whether it is because very

pointed outreach efforts and so more crime is being reported or if there was an increase in hate. >> while the number of hate crimes fluctuate, over the last 10 years reported hate crimes have increased 89.6%. >> paul pelosi, the husband of speaker of the house nancy pelosi was sentenced today for a dui crash in napa county. pelosi was convicted on one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence. ryan curry has the details from today's sentencing. >> paul pelosi has been convicted for one count of driving under the influence. the incident happened may 28 where he crashed his car entering another driver. >> the consequences of his sentence was three years of summary probation, all fines and fees restitution owing to the survivor and in the matter. he has to submit to blood, breath or urine test if requested by law enforcement if it is suspected he is driving under the influence.
