i think a lot of people have much more than that, but i personally think it's a good start at least, and for a lot of people it's going to make a big difference. >> reporter: the plan would affect borrowers who currently make less than $125,000 a year. the move could make biden a hero to some while igniting fierce criticism among his opponents. >> it's unfair for lots of people who worked hard, you know, sacrificed, paid for their college and yet have no debts but now will be forced to pay for everybody else. >> reporter: pressure mounting for him to follow through to address student loan debt. talks in congress focused on anything from $10,000 worth of relief to $50,000 or even canceling the nation's entire $1.7 trillion student loan tab. settling on the $10,000 figure is not sitting well with some biden voters who demanded more. the naacp saying, if the rumors are true, we've got a problem. the group warning the president that many student loan borrowers elected him and suggesting $10,000 in relief, quote, is not how you treat black voters who

turned out in record numbers. meanwhile, experts say the president's action could face a legal challenge. >> the president through the secretary of education does have the power to adjust the amount of loan principal that any borrower has. now a court could decide they want to interpret it in a different way, and they're going to read it as only applying to smaller amounts of debt cancellation. >> reporter: biden is also expected to extend a pandemic era pause on federal student loan payments, which is set to expire september 1st. as for canceling debt, some experts warn it could prompt colleges to raise tuition costs. rhiannon, andrew. >> derricke, thank you. the votes are in from another set of high-stakes primaries in new york. veteran congressman jerry nadler easily beat fellow democrat carolyn maloney. they've both served together for decades but redistricting pitted them against each other, and the race got nasty with maloney calling nadler senile.

in florida congressman and former governor charlie crist easily won his primary. he will take on governor ron desantis in november. he wasted no time taking aim at desantis, who many believe is preparing for a presidential run. >> he is a bully, and he's dangerous. he imitates the worst authoritarian leaders on the globe, and it's all a political game that he's playing. he wants to appeal to the extremists across the nation as he seeks the republican nomination. >> desantis called crist a guy that's been running for office for five decades. meanwhile, in a victory for desantis at least two-thirds of the school board candidates he endorsed won their races last night. his agenda has focused on parental rights especially on the topics of race and gender. former president trump is facing a new deadline in the aftermath of the fbi search at his mar-a-lago home. in the meantime, a letter from the national archives claims trump kept 700 pages of classified documents at his home

after he left office. abc's em nguyen has the latest on the investigation. em, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, andrew. with a letter from the national archives, we're learning more about the fbi's investigation into whether records allegedly taken by trump after leaving office were handled in an unlawful manner. new revelations in the fbi's investigation into former president trump's handling of classified materials after leaving office. a letter by the national archives states, trump turned over more than 100 documents comprising of 700 pages of classified materials to the archives in january, a year after trump left office. some of those records marked with the highest level of classification, special access program, reserved for the most sensitive secrets in the government. the letter from the archives released by a representative for trump himself, but experts say it's not helping his case. >> those documents do belong to the national archives. they do not belong to the president personally.

>> reporter: even so in june more documents were returned from the trump team before the search on mar-a-lago in early august where the fbi found 11 more sets of classified materials. now the trump team is asking for a special master to review the documents seized by the fbi, but the federal judge assigned to oversee trump's motion is asking for more clarification. >> the judge they asked came back with a very sharp order asking the trump team for more information, like what law are they asking her to apply? why are they even in her court? she's a different judge than the one who issued the search warrant. in the end a pretty stunning rebuke from a judge appointed by donald trump. >> reporter: the trump team has until friday to respond to the judge's request. this as another judge decides whether to unseal the affidavit used to justify the august 8th search of trump's mar-a-lago estate. the judge in the affidavit case could make a ruling as early as thursday. he says he believes public interest favors releasing the

document but that redactions from the justice department could render it meaningless. andrew. >> em, thank you. federal investigators are now looking into a helicopter crash near chattanooga, tennessee, that left two law enforcement officers dead. officials say a state trooper and a sheriff's deputy were killed when their chopper hit a power line and went down in a wooded area. two men have been convicted of plotting to kill michigan governor gretchen whitmer. the two could face life in prison but are expected to appeal. their plan, aimed at forcing an end to covid restrictions, called for whitmer to be kidnapped and executed. today marks six months since russia went to war in ukraine and there's no end in sight. vladimir putin's end game remains unclear, and now ukraine is about to get more help from the u.s. this morning, the biden administration is set to announce its largest aid package for ukraine so far. sources say the military aid will total about $3 billion adding to the 10.6 billion the u.s. has sent ukraine since the

war began. today marks six months since the russian invasion. the u.n. reports 5,587 civilian deaths in the war so far, but that number is likely much higher. today also marks a major holiday in ukraine. independence day celebrating the country's break from soviet rule in 1991. on the eve of the holiday, new video posted online shows missiles striking the country's second largest city. independence day celebrations have been canceled across the country. [ speaking non-english ] >> reporter: president zelenskyy warning russia may be planning, quote, hideous provocations and brutal strikes. the u.s. state department says russia is stepping up efforts to strike highly populated areas. >> independence day has just begun here in ukraine, and the country is braced for what might happen. but zelenskyy doubling down. he's saying that they won't relent until they retake back

part of the country occupied by russia not just in the last six months but for years. even crimea. forget any peace deal for now. this war looks set to drag on for years. >> reporter: meanwhile, growing concerns about the zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in ukraine, europe's largest nuclear plant. video circulating online shows a plant employee, local officials say, was killed in russian shelling outside the facility. ukraine says russian attacks have damaged part of the plant and briefly cut off power. the u.n. is calling on both sides to demilitarize the nuclear plant. russia though has rejected the idea. the deadly storms that dumped record rainfall in texas have now moved east. heavy rain is now expected in louisiana and mississippi with a risk of widespread flash flooding. meanwhile, the governor of texas has declared a disaster in 23 counties. the dallas area has seen the wettest august in more than a century. let's take a look at your wednesday forecast.

back now with a wild crash. a car slamming into a dmv office in colorado. police say a drunk driver was behind the wheel. no one was hurt. the driver left the scene but was later arrested. we're now hearing from a baltimore couple suing over what they claim is a shocking case of racial discrimination. they say it all happened while they were trying to refinance their mortgage. it is a story we first saw in the "new york times." >> reporter: this morning, a black couple who says an appraisal company undervalued their maryland home because of their race, is describing their ordeal. >> we experienced discrimination. >> reporter: she and her husband, doctors, had their baltimore home appraised last summer hoping to refinance their mortgage and take advantage of low interest rates. >> we thought we were in pretty good shape to meet the mark. >> reporter: home prices have

risen significantly since they bought their house and invested nearly $40,000 in renovations. when the appraisal company told them their home's value, they were stunned. >> the number came back at $472,000. >> reporter: with that valuation, their refinance loan was denied. >> my jaw dropped. this is racism. >> reporter: to test the theory, they had the home appraised again. this time they made it seem like a white family lived there. >> we had a white colleague meet the new appraiser at the door. we had to have a very careful conversation with our children. we would have to remove evidence of their presence in our home. and will the appraisal came back at $750,000. >> reporter: that new valuization, nearly $300,000 more than the original appraisal. studies have found black homeowners frequently face discrimination in home appraisals, even though appraisals are bound by law not to discriminate. a recent report found a home in

a majority black neighborhood is likely to be valued at 23% less than in near identical home in a majority white neighborhood. >> they are now suing the appraisal company and the loan company that denied their application. the loan company, loan depot, said it strongly opposes discrimination. megan markle is sharing the details, the nursery where archie was staying during a visit to south africa caught on fire. he was about 4 months old at the time. meghan and prince harry were at a speaking engagement. she said archie's nanny went to get a snack right before the fire started. >> her instinct was like, let me just bring him with me before i put him down. in that amount of time the heater in the nursery caught on fire. there was no smoke detector. someone happened to smell smoke down the highway. fire extinguished. he was supposed to be sleeping in there.
