[ laughter ] >> it's -- it's a little harder now. because i have an 818-month-old toddler that i'm chasing around. it's not like i can nap on a whim. but it is nice. i mean, for any of those pregnant folks out there, people that have been pregnant, everyone is so generous. doors are opened for you. seats are given for you. once the baby comes, that's not really -- >> simu: you're on your own at that point? >> you're on your own for sure. i'm really owning these last few months of being taken care of by the world. >> simu: how old is gus now?

[ cheers and applause ] >> simu: i don't want to make you feel old or anything, but i grew up listening to your music. >> thank you. >> simu: how does it feel releasing an album now versus, say, 15, 20 years ago? do you feel like the landscape has changed? >> everything has changed dramatically. i mean, i'm 38. i put my first record out when i was 15. so yes, the world looks dramatically different now. like, radio feels like it's less of a thing to sort of break in an artist. >> simu: right. >> the fact that i think social

media out there has sort of allowed people to sort of be their own boss in a way. you don't need kind of like the machinery i think of like a label and mtv and all of that to sort of break an artist anymore. >> simu: yeah. >> so it's nice to have i guess freedom back in artists' hands in that sense. >> simu: now, you co-wrote your album with your husband? >> i did yeah. >> simu: how did that -- how did the dynamic work? did you write songs about each other every time you had an argument? [ laughter ] >> no, so my husband, taylor goldsmith, is in a band called dawes who actually played on the show here quite a bit. [ applause ] he and i wrote my last record that came out right before covid hit. and then started working on this record kind of as a response to being home and being cooped up and finding a way to still sort of be creative and have a cathartic outlet to sort of process everything that was going on. then i became pregnant. so there was so much fodder to

sort of -- to write about. and he's the most prolific writer i know. and i have the utmost respect for him in the fact that we have this shared passion, and we can sort of find a way to meld it together and work together. and he came on tour with me, he's in my band. like, it's so much fun to kind of make it a bit of a family affair. >> simu: you've got a wonderful, healthy relationship, i get it, thank you. [ laughter ] >> sorry. >> simu: no, that's wonderful. i know that you had to cut your tour a little bit short? >> yeah. >> simu: how are you feeling about that? are you planning on kind of resuming once the baby is born? >> yeah, so we hit the road for the first time in 15 years. something i've been dreaming about doing for so long. and i figured because i shot season five of "this is us" pregnant most of the time, oh, i can go out and tour, i can ride on a tour bus, hang out with my toddler. and it was exceptionally, exceedingly more difficult than i realized.

so we did about half the tour then i was like, you know what, i have to listen so my body and sort of draw boundaries and take care of myself and take care of my health. and so -- i know eventually pwe. it was so much fun to play those shows and play old songs and new songs. [ applause ] it was just real wish fulfillment for me. but yeah, i think we'll find a way at some point. maybe the children won't come. might be a little easier to do by myself. >> simu: i see. i see. >> yeah, i can't wait to get back on the road. >> simu: that's great. i heard or i read that you didn't have the best tour bus on the tour? is that true? >> we didn't. i mean, i'm -- i'm not one to complain. every band is on the road right now. >> simu: yeah. >> because covid sort of shut down the touring business. so, you know, our tour was this tiny, scrappy tour. and we were only out on the road for six weeks. so i think we kind of got bumped down the totem pole in terms of the fun, brand-new buses. i think our bus was way older

than the last time i went on the road. it must have been the late '90s. which would have been fine. but there were no shocks. so it was like trying to sleep on a wooden roller coaster every night. >> simu: yeah, that's awful. >> yeah this is probably not going to work out in the long run, i can't sleep. >> simu: mandy, you can tell us who took those better trailers from a pregnant woman. >> i don't know who they are. >> simu: was it shawn mendes? [ laughter ] was it justin bieber in drake for sure. [ laughter ] >> we're going to hunt them down. >> simu: would steal a trailer from a pregnant woman, i think. you touched on shooting the final season of "this is us." >> yeah. [ cheers and applause ] >> simu: which has been such a phenomenon. i mean, to have touched audiences for so long with your character. i mean, how did it feel to shoot out the last moments of the show? >> very emotional. i think for all of us. because, you know, even on a film set it's like, you grow so close. you shared such intimate moments

with this family. >> simu: yes. >> six seasons of being with our you and our cast. it was really hard to sort of say good-bye. and simultaneously saying good-bye to this character. i'm like, oh, this is like slipping into a pair of comfortable shoes every day at work. i can't fathom, like, not telling these stories anymore, telling the story of this family. so i think i'm still processing the fact that it's over in a way, because we would typically be shooting right now. be shooting the next season. but -- yeah. i'm -- i'm excited to sort of look forward to whatever's next. >> simu: now, you play -- for those of you who watch the show, you play slightly older than you are now. maybe a lot older than you are now. >> yeah. >> simu: and what was the makeup process like for that? and are you at least relieved to not have to do that anymore? >> i even miss the makeup process. yeah, i played the patriarch of this family from her mid-20s to her mid-80s. >> simu: when you're walking out of your trailer as an

85-year-old woman, do you feel like people street you any different? even though they know it's makeup? >> yeah. i mean, again, our crew, the majority of whom had been with us the entire run of the show, it's like everyone's voices got softer. 3 were a little more gentle. people wanted to help me out of my chair. i'm stillmandy, but thank you, i appreciate it. >> simu: here, let me help you sit down. >> absolutely. there was a lot of care given when i was 85. >> simu: so sweet. >> it was very sweet. >> simu: i will hold a door open for you any day. more with mandy moore after this. [ laughter ] >> well -- "a walk to remember" was -- i had been in "the princess diaries," but this was technically my first leading role, my first on-screen kiss, with shane. i was 16, i turned 17 while we were making the movie in wilmington, north carolina, which is where "dawson's creek" shot. so there was a lot of, like, teen romance cachet in my orbit at that time. i, unfortunately -- obviously, being the uncool young person, it's not like i got to hang out with any of those fun people. people often ask me, oh -- i toured with nsync and the backstreet boys when i was 15. did i get to hang out with them? i'm like, they wanted to hang out with a little loser like me? [ laughter ] no way, they were like -- >> simu: absolutely. >> no way. i was the annoying kid sister

[ laughter ] then a bright light would shine, so they let you know he's recording. so when my scene came on in the movie theater, it was just a bright flashlight on his face. [ laughter ] looking at me like -- i'm like, dad, what are you -- i ripped it off, you're committing a federal crime right now!
