>> building a better bay area. moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7. >> today the man at the center of one of the most recent cases of government corruption in san francisco learned his fate after pleading guilty to accepting more than $1 million in bribes for years, and steering city contracts to his friends. less than an hour ago, a judge sentenced him. thank you for joining us. >> the former public works director was sentenced to seven years in prison. dan: our i-team reporter has been following this case from the beginning and is live from the federal courthouse with this developing news. dan: about a dozen city officials, contractors and businesspeople have been convicted in this case. some are serving their time,

others waiting to be sentenced. this afternoon, the former department of public works director walked into federal court alone after pleading guilty to accepting more than one million some -- than $1 million in bribes. police say his 20 acre home was built with those bribes. some companies doing work for free and supplying appliances and furniture. today the judge sentenced him to seven years in prison. the defense said he had a heart attack recently and needs time to see his doctors. he is set to report to prison on january 6. i questioned him after the hearing. do you have anything to say to the people of san francisco who feel betrayed by what you did? anything to say at all, sir? you owe an explanation to the people of san francisco. his team did provide a statement

late today, saying, i want to apologize to the people of san francisco for my misconduct. now that sentencing is behind me i plan to concentrate on my family and health in the near term. i look forward to the time i can continue to serve mike in unity and repair the damage that my actions caused the city and my family. we also got a statement from a u.s. attorney that says in part, for at least 12 years, nero shook down contractors eager for city business, trading his authority and influence for billions in cash. construction work, travel, meals and gifts. the justice system will punish corrupt public officials. once again the judge said today that he will forfeit that house in colusa county. he also faces the threat of losing his pension as well. that process is about to kickoff now that he's been sentenced to prison. dan noyes, abc7 eyewitness news. ama: in the east bay, three

mayoral candidates in oakland say they've been left off the ballot due to bad information given by the clerk's office. they say they were given the wrong deadline for filing paperwork. lena howland spoke with some of the candidates about what happens next. >> actually wednesday august 17 is the final deadline. >> i was told the deadline was august 17 based on the fact that there is no incumbent. >> myself as well as every other candidate for mayor were told that the deadline to file our paperwork was going to be wednesday august 17. lena: three oakland mayoral hopefuls each given the same deadline to file their paperwork. but on august 12, five days before that deadline, each candidate got a call from the oakland city clerk's office saying the deadline changed to 5:00 that evening. >> i was almost in tears because i knew i did not have all my signatures. lena: this woman said she had to leave her teaching job early to turn everything in.

the following monday, the clerk's office told her her signatures were insufficient. >> i feel like they should extend the deadline, allow us to collect more signatures, or put us on the ballot. lena: an oakland native and civil rights attorney was able to get everything turned in at the final hour. >> but i found out tuesday morning, after walking into the city clerk's office, that there was an issue with my endorser's signatures. they would not give me any chance to dispute or cure it, because they said the deadline was friday. >> a homeless advocate has been campaigning for years. >> i'm feeling really slighted, especially for the three years of campaigning that i've done to help oakland, to bring up the homeless issues and solutions. lena: even the current city council president pro tem said she was given the wrong date, but was able to correctly file in the nick of time.

still, she is advocating for her opponents. >> i understand people make mistakes. i do understand that. but in this case, it's a big mistake. we must rectify it. lena: the oakland city clerk regrets the error, but says neither the city clerk nor any other city official has discretion to alter or waive state elections law, including authority to extend the filing deadline. that is why this woman is taking hands into her own hands, filing a complaint with the secretary of state's office. >> i love this city and do not feel i'm being treated fairly. i don't think other candidates have been treated fairly. i'm running to correct these issues preventing me from being on the ballot right now. lena: in oakland, lena howland, abc7 news. dan: this is a live picture of interstate 80 in vallejo, where the afternoon commute has been a complete mess. multiple lanes shut down due to an accident involving a beer delivery truck.

these caltrans photos provide a better look. the front of the truck is demolished after apparently crashing through the median. it happened about 3:30 this afternoon,w est of the highway 37 intersection. at this point we don't know how many other vehicles were involved, or about any injuries. ama: a historic vote today. the california air resources board approved rules to ban the sale of new gasoline cars by 203 5. companies can keep selling some plug-in hybrids, which use gasoline and electricity. the rules include zero emission sales goals for cars starting with 2026 models when 35% of new vehicles would be required to be zero emission. >> this is a big game changing decision that will move markets internationally. we will radically change the way people drive and the opportunities and innovation and advancement that will come from that. ama: the rules will not ban gas cars on the roads. you will still be able to buy a

used gas car after 2035. dan: it certainly does not mean refiners in the east bay will shut down. they found a way to pivot. abc7 reporter leslie brinkley talked with chevron officials and local leaders. leslie: in a waterfront warehouse in richmond, politicians and oil company giants seem to agree, there are ways to transition away from fossil fuels without destroying the local economy. >> an entire sector of our economy to transition from petroleum. sorry, you won't be selling fuel, but maybe you will sell a different fuel. maybe it will be hydrogen. leslie: as electric vehicle use zooms ahead, they could buy hydrogen fuel cells. chevron is uniquely positioned to ramp up hydrogen production. >> they did a project two years ago that was over $1 billion which helped us build the largest, most modern, and lowest

emission hydrogen plants in the west coast. that plant that has -- that plant has capacity to support the emerging market. >> we need to scale that up. leslie: chevron is getting ready to load hydrogen onto trucks as they build 30 new hydrogen stations in northern california by 2024. the first will open in richmond. the california air resources board projects battery-powered electric vehicles will end up dominating the car market, but they foresee hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles taking over much of the trucking industry. hydrogen powered rail and aviation projects are also in the works. >> as you scale up and size the distance and range you want, that is where hydrogen makes a lot more sense. leslie: 30 of these hydrogen toyotasj are being donated to local residents.

ama: san francisco police are investigating the attack of an 80-year-old man in the richmond district around 1:30 yesterday afternoon. the man told officers two men approached him, but he did not know what they were saying because of a language barrier. one suspect struck him. both took off in a black sedan. the man was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. police say they have not determined if this was racially motivated, however it comes in the wake of several attacks on elderly asians. earlier this month, the former member of the city are commission suffered broken bones when he was punched in the pace, kicked and beaten on 3rd street. on july 31, a 70-year-old woman was assaulted and robbed in her apartment building. arrests have been made in both cases. dan: a warning from police in the south bay after a dog was stolen for ransom. a crime trend being seen throughout the bay area recently.

fortunately, as abc7 news reporter zach fuentes explains, the dog was found safe. but police say dog owners have to stay alert. >> come here, boy. zach: a happy reunion outside the police department. this american bulldog reunited with his owner after a scary dog napping. he was taken by a man earlier this month. that man helping her move items to a storage unit. >> the day he helped her move some items is the day he stole her car basically and held it from her. zach: that suspect also stole her dog. she was later able to find the car on her own and get it back, almost losing her life in the process, and still unsuccessful in finding her dog. >> he found out that she took the car back. that is when he fired a gun at her, slashed her tires, etc. still was demanding money for the dog. zach: that is when police got involved.

wednesday, the man suspected of the attack was arrested. >> our covert response unit located and arrested the suspect in san jose. later, we were able to find out where the dog was. zach: the suspect was charged with weapons violations, dog theft, and stealing a vehicle. i spoke with the victim over the phone. she says she is still too scared of the suspect to speak about this on camera. one thing she told me she wanted everyone to know is that her dog is home safe and healthy. dog theft has been an issue we reported on throughout the bay area, most of them involving french bulldogs. in some cases they are held for wrentham -- for ransom where the thief attempt to sell them. police say it is cortical that anyone reports it. -- it is critical that anyone reports it. >> there are tools we can use to track down these incidents. what has happened in san jose and other cities, we have been able to find these dogs. zach: police urge everyone who hasn't to get their dogs microchip and be aware of

surroundings, even in your own neighborhood. zach fuentes, abc7 news. ama: the chp's 11-99 foundation is revoking the lifetime membership of the husband of house speaker nancy pelosi. he was arrested after a dui crash in may. pelosi presented his foundation card during the arrest. in a statement today, the chp says that made it look like he was trying to get preferential treatment, which violates the terms of his membership. pelosi was sentenced to three years probation. the porsche he was driving the night of the crash just went up for auction. dan: still ahead, wine tasting fees are increasing festively in one part of the bay area. it is not the napa valley. we will tell you why, and one place where prices are actually down. that

dan: in the north bay, winetasting costs have soared in sonoma county. the new sonoma winetasting report finds the average cost of a tasting in march of 2020 before the lockdown was $26. compare that to june of this year, the average price, $36. on our 3:00 p.m. program, the editor of the sonoma winetasting blog explained what is driving up these prices. >> winemaking costs are frontloaded because of the aging process. wines made this year won't be sold for years in advance. regardless of what happens in the future, winemakers still have to pay current market labor, transportation, and

materials cost. that is probably the biggest reason winetasting prices are up. dan: one of the few places in the bay area where tasting prices are actually down. ama: now to some breaking news out of southern california, where a brush fire is burning in the angeles national forest. you can see that smoke has charred about 100 acres in the san gabriel mountains, just north of luverne and los angeles county. our sister station reports that smoke is visible from the 2-10 and 605 freeways. there are several road closures in the area. firefighters have called for more resources. dan: the good news is it has not been as hot as it has been, ama. i guess it is going to heat up soon. ama: let's get to abc7 meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya: enjoy this comfort zone while we have it because next week hot weather is going to return to the bay area. let me show you live pictures from our san jose roof camera.
