63 in san jose. outside we go. a live look, our exploratorium camera showing you cloud cover over the city. fog will linger along the coast similar to yesterday. brighter skies as the morning goes on. we are finding temperatures starting in the 60's. 4:00 p.m., a breezy day. a couple degrees warmer compared to yesterday. close to 90 in some spots inland. temperatures tumble for the weekend. reggie: today we could learn more about the justification for the fbi's search of former president donald trump's home. the thing is, a lot of the information will be blacked out. jobina: the affidavit is expected to be heavily redacted.

anything that could interfere with the investigation could be blocked out. the affidavit is likely to contain information about the evidence prosecutors had, what they were looking for and potential witnesses. >> it is an effort to strike a balance by the magistrate. on one hand, the government's desire to keep the investigation intact and public interest knowing what this is all about. jobina: according to documents already made public, there are potential violations to three crimes. they are related to the espionage act and concealing or destroying records in investigations. president biden commented on the investigation for the first time. he said he had no knowledge about the search before it happened. kumasi: half a dozen bay area cities have reported finding credit card skimming devices. this map shows the ones found since early july.

it is a troubling trend that has long targeted cardholders without any morning. ryan curry joining us live. ryan: one of the skimmers was found at this gas station in july. police were one of six different agencies to find one of these skimmers and notify residents one was at a nearby location. police and the marin county sheriff have been some of the agencies to find skimmers in a variety of locations. crooks typically use the information to make purchases of their own with your credit card information. these skimmers can be hard to find because they are often disguised as legitimate credit card readers. cybersecurity experts say taking a few extra steps and seeing if anything is out of the ordinary can help you.

>> information at the hands of the people that are not authorized to do it is risky all the time. ryan: on august 19, morgan hill police say they were alerted to a skimming device and a small camera above a bank of america atm. these devices have been placed in prominent areas were credit card skimmers have been used. their advice is to keep an eye out for anything out of the ordinary. use cash as an alternative or other devices like apple pay or google pay to ensure safety. ryan curry, abc 7 news. reggie: this morning, a warning from police after a dog was stolen for ransom in san jose. it is a crime trend seen throughout the bay area. the american bull dog named fallon has been reunited with its owner. the suspect knew felon's owner

through a mutual friend. the friend was helping remove items from a storage unit when he stole her car and took the dog. >> he found out she took the car back and that is when he fired a gun at her, slasher her tires and was demanding money for the dog. reggie: police arrested 40-year-old johnny chagolla for stealing the car and dognapping. the dog is back home safely. kumasi: parents in a san jose school district said there school's principal told them to pick up their kids because they refuse to wear a mask. j.r. stone has the story. >> the principal called me to come pick them up because he was refusing to wear his mask. amy: this alum rock union school district parent who has chosen not to identify himself publicly is describing the situation for two of his kids at adelante

academy in san jose. both are unable to go to school because they will not wear a mask, something mandated in the district. >> it irritates their faces, nose, mouth, lips, and it ends up causing their nose to run and their eyes start to bother them. amy: the board of trustee -- j.r.: the board of trusteess said it is about keeping people safe. >> we have families that have to live with each other. multiple families, multiple generations. j.r.: the superintendent says we have asked all staff and students and visitors to wear masks indoors because the covid rate in all of our zip codes is still the highest in our county. santa clara county health officials tell abc 7 news that

while the east san jose neighborhood was hit hard during the height of the pandemic with some of the highest rates in the area, there is no current data to show covid rates are still that high there. >> authority is limited to sending a sick kid home. the california constitution gives children a right to be there for in person instruction. >> just to be clear so we understand each other, you are refusing to educate my healthy son because he will not wear a face mask? she repeatedly answered, yes. j.r.: the district said the boys were not sent home, they were given options. the father said those were wearing a mask for one hour with a two minute break, doing independent study were wearing a clear face shield. >> the sad part was they went loving school to really hating

school in the matter of two weeks. they were so excited to return and now they do not want to go back. j.r.: the district said they are keeping the policy in place. the father said he is looking at possible legal action. j.r. stone, abc 7 news. reggie: a pop up monkeypox vaccine clinic will open in san francisco today as an entertainment venue in the tenderloin on taylor street. it will be open from 11:00 until 3:00. the vaccine clinic at san francisco general is open today from 8:00 until 4:00. drop ins our welcome. yesterday, that location administered 207 doses. drew: sfo this morning, low clouds. some pockets of drizzle and dense fog. another foggy start to our day on this friday. air quality, good today, tomorrow.

there are new details about house speaker nancy pelosi. the foundation is provoking a lifetime membership. he was arrested after a dui crash. in a statement, the chp made it look like he was trying to get preferential treatment. sentenced to three years probation. reggie: in the east bay, the chp made an arrest in a freeway shooting captured on video. you can see and east bay couple reacting when a single bullet struck their front windshield. the 24-year-old suspect was booked into jail and is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder. the shooting happened on 580 near grand avenue.

the people whose car was hit were not injured. kumasi: a step forward for an elementary school in san diego's mission bay neighborhood. the school board approved the transfer of land. this is one of the last major steps before construction can start. the school will be needed to accommodate families expected to neighborhood -- move into the neighborhood in the coming years. reggie: united farm will reach sacramento. hundreds set out on a long journey on foot from kern county to advocate for the union rights. more than 300 miles later, the march will arrive at the capitol to urge the governor and lawmakers to pass ab2183 that would expand voting options and union elections. they have been working with the bill's author since march. kumasi: new information on bart's long-awaited extension to

them down to morgan hill. skimmers have been spotted at gas stations and atm's. ryan curry live with what we need to know. ryan: good morning. this was one of the locations were authorities found a card skimming device in july. they are finding them all over the bay area. security experts are advising people if you want to be extra safe, maybe using a safe app like google pay or apple pay, or even just paying in cash. you mentioned six different agencies finding them as far as down in the south bay and up to the north bay. finding fake credit card skimmers. they look like regular devices although they transmit data through a criminal agency who put it there. they obtain your credit card information. they buy things of their own. they can be hard to find because

of the way they look. they have been found in gas stations, convenience stores, atm's and restaurants. cyber security experts say take a look at the device you are about to use and see if it looks like the others nearby. >> look at the device itself and see if it is really tight or.. see the label. the seal. look at the next device and see if it is similar. ryan: oakland police and the marin county sheriff are some of the agencies that have found these devices recently. they plan to send the once they found over two criminal computer task force agencies. morgan hill police found a device attached to a bank of america atm. something you have to use a credit card in order to get access to. these are being found in common areas were a credit card or debit card is used.

they want you to be wary of where you are using your financial information. ryan curry, abc 7 news. kumasi: this morning, the white house has revealed more about how much president biden's student loan forgiveness plan will cost taxpayers. jobina: the white house says this plan will cost about $24 billion if 75% of borrowers take part. the cost could be even higher. >> what is happening right now in america is it is working great if you are born into a family that is well-to-do. it is not working great for the rest of the folks. we want to see colleges have skin in the game. >> it is very unfair to have a truck driver have to pay back a loan from someone who got a phd in gender studies. jobina: this news comes as people continue to debate the plan.

republicans continue to blast the plan as unfair to people who paid off their loans or never took loans. the white house went after republicans were criticizing the plan but took out ppp loans during the pandemic. on twitter, they posted the size of the loan and how much was forgiven by the federal government. the debate is not likely to end soon. reggie: a san francisco city official at the center of a government corruption case has been sentenced to seven years in prison. he was fined and will have to forfeit a home after accepting more than $1 million in bribes. we have been tracking this case since it started. >> former department of public works director walked into federal court all alone. after pleading guilty to accepting more than $1 million of bribes in exchange for city contracts.

community and working to repair the damage my action caused the city and my family. we also got a statement from a u.s. attorney that says in part, for at least 12 years, he shook down contractors eager for business, trading his influence for millions of dollars in cash, construction work, meals and gifts. this demonstrates the justice system will punish corrupt officials. kumasi: california may soon be allowing more sick and dying inmates to be released from prison. the state senate passed legislation to allow in base to be freed if they are permanently medically incapacitated or have an advanced illness that is expected to take their life. a student found 91 inmates died while awaiting compassionate release. the plan is heading to the state assembly. reggie: california has become

the first in the world to approve banning the sale of new gas powered cars by 2035. governor newsom said the transportation sector is responsible for more than half of the state's carbon pollution. he issued an executive order mandating 100% of sales of passenger cars and trucks be zero emission by 2035. 35% of vehicles sold in the state by 2026 and 68% by 2030. >> absolutely historic. the reason for that, i think it is clear climate change is the single most important generational challenge that we are facing today. reggie: the new rules do not outright ban gas cars over him in the sale of used ones even after 2035. challenges still remain, including making sure california can generate enough power to

charge all the new electric vehicles. governor newsom said the bold step is necessary to cut pollution. >> policy is the accelerator. can we accelerate this even further? we put it out and people either dismissed it or mocked it . hear we are two years later and all but a handful of automobile companies say they are all in and that is a game changer. cost of living, cost of operating a vehicle, cost of gas. a feeling of vulnerability when it relates to decisions made in saudi arabia. the politics of that are exhausting, back-and-forth. all those factors played into this moment. reggie: he also said the state is investing $10 billion to excel the right the transition that will make it easier and cheaper for more californians to purchase electric cars. you can watch the full interview with governor newsom at 7:00.

kumasi: environmental leaders and organizations are pledging to find equitable climate solution centered on black communities. the initiative focuses on water, energy, land and labor. it includes the inflation reduction act the president biden signed into law. critics say it is not bold enough addressing climate issues affecting black americans. reggie: an rei became the second unionized location in the country. workers said they were perpetually understaffed and overworked and faced racism from managers. in february the company was publicly against the formation of a union but a new statement said they support workers rights to vote to unionize. the store voted by a margin of 56 in favor, third yet against. kumasi: the san francisco college board of trustees voted to observe the alliterative year as a holiday.
