a future mission will determine if astronauts go back to the moon. nasa's goal is to establish a permanent station orbiting the moon called gateway. from there astronauts could land on the moon and this would also be a homebase base for more space exploration. >> from our current knowledge, we have learned over time how to operate and live and work. the gateway is an outpost. jobina: it will take 42 days for the rocket to come back downturn. nasa will try again on friday to launch into the moon's orbit. the next attempt will be a big step forward and america's quest to put astronauts back on the moon. the end of the apollo program was 50 years ago. kumasi: now to a problem affecting the entire bay area. discolored water caused by algae that is killing thousands of fish. over the weekend, scientists found huge amounts in bay area waterways.

abc news reporter lena howland has more. lena: the environmental watchdog group san francisco bay keepers says in early august they started to get reports of red and brown water in the oakland estuary. at the same time they started getting reports of dead fish in the water. scientists founded to be a red tide algae bloom. that bloom emits official -- commits a fish toxin. they say the algae are a normal part of the ecosystem, normally at levels that are harmless. scientists say nutrients from the 40 wastewater treatment plants around the bay area are supercharging the algae to reproduce in huge quantities. we spoke with one man who has been coming to explore for decades and says he saw thousands of dead fish. >> striped bass to bat raise,

everything that needs oxygen is dying in the lake. lena: the good news is experts say the algae will likely die off on its own, especially in colder water, but they still worry about the long-term consequences, such as two endangered fish. the algae does not pose a real threat to people or pets, but prolonged contact with discolored water can cause skin irritation or respiratory irritation. live in the newsroom, lena howland, abc7news. reggie: san francisco police are looking for the man who stabbed another man to the death route 1:4 yesterday at the station at 24th and mission. officials tell a surveillance video shows the two men are doing near the elevator when one man stabbed the other. the suspect may have left the scene on the scooter. the victim went down the stairs and collapsed on the platform and died at the scene.

this is just the latest violent incident involving a marked station. on friday in a separate case someone opened fire on a train. the man in that case was shot multiple times, but is expected to survive. kumasi: at least seven people are arrested for taking part on -- taking part in sideshows in oakland. this was from one of the sideshows. you can see the back wheel of the car damaged. oakland police say a sideshow detail was out and about. the show drew as many as 500 cars and 170 people watching. reggie: the north bay police agency converged on the high school for a training drill. sebastopol police hosted this active shooter training exercise. volunteers play the roles of students and staff and the sounds of simulated gunfire could be heard.

the annual training was in collaboration with the west sonoma county union high school district. sebastopol police say after the events in uvalde, texas, they recognize the need to work with partner agencies to update their training to have the most effective response possible. this event was only a trail. kumasi: today a san francisco supervisor will ask the city's comptroller and chief economist to start looking for answers. he will send a letter asking the city to prepare a right recovery report. dorsey says he was compelled to demand answers after a university study found udr addif oregon's state budget in 2017. reggie: if you're looking to get a monkeypox vaccine the clinic reopens this morning. the clinic was open this weekend and gave out 200 doses on

reggie: a single engine plane that made an emergency landing on a watsonville beach has been taken to a hanger for repairs. abc 7 news was at the beach where a crew carefully unassembled the wings and propeller. the pilot decided to safely land the airplane on the beach saturday afternoon. none of the three people on board were hurt. to get the airplane off the beach they had to clip its wings and loaded on a trailer. beach officials say the pilot did a good job without landing. >> there a couple of people interested in taking photos because how often you see a plane on the beach? reggie: this is the latest aviation mishap in the watsonville area. on august 18 ghost where planes collided midair while trying to land at the watsonville airport.
