[ cheers and applause ] i wish every room i walked into was like this. this is a historic night for the show because i am the first jimmy kimmel guest host who actually has never met jimmy kimmel. that's not a joke. this is actually my third time on the show, and never met the guy. [ laughter ] last time i was a guest, chelsea handler was the host. before that, sean hayes was filling in. and now i'm hosting. [ cheers and applause ] and jimmy's not here. [ laughter ] again. he's actually avoided me so many times, i'm starting to feel like matt damon. [ audience: aww ] feels kind of gross, if i'm honest. but this is not unfamiliar territory for people like me. it's just another story of an immigrant doing the job of a white guy and getting paid 900% less. [ laughter ] >> simu: i'm not sure if you heard, guillermo, but there's actually a big scandal that's rocking hollywood right now. so here in southern california, we're in the middle of a massive drought. and local officials have been sending letters to residents who are using too much water. including some very notable names. >> with california in the midst of a historic drought emergency, tonight some of the biggest names in hollywood are finding themselves in hot water. the kardashians, dwyane wade, sylvester stallone, and kevin hart among the 2,000-plus customers warned for excessive water usage. >> simu: now, before you grab your pitch forks, have a little compassion for these poor celebrities, all right? [ laughter ] do you even know how much water it takes to wash a private jet? [ laughter ] it's a lot.

[ cheers ] first time i've heard anybody cheer for student loans. it's a fair number of you. you might be in luck because president biden announced a plan today that would eliminate up to $20,000 of debt for many americans. some are saying the dollar amount isn't high enough, but you have to remember back when joe biden was in college, a year of tuition cost like 3 stamps and a sack of turnips. [ laughter ] meanwhile, on the other side of the aisle, donald trump is getting his portrait put up in the smithsonian.

and trump's political action committee has paid $650,000 to commission paintings of the former first couple. which is a lot of money. i mean, for $650,000 joe biden could forgive 32 student loans and donald trump could buy the silence of three porn stars. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] and here's another thing, all right? donald trump does not need another portrait. his supporters actually paint insane portraits of him all the time for free. i'm going to show you some. these are 100% real, i promise we did not make these up. here's one of trump riding an eagle that's firing missiles next to a mount rushmore that features himself. [ laughter ] very tasteful. it's hanging over the urinals at mar-a-lago. here's one of trump as jesus christ walking on water, rescuing a drowning statue of liberty. now, that is -- that is wrong on so many levels. but on the bright side, that's actually the most respectful way trump has ever grabbed a woman. [ laughter ] [ applause ] a bit of a silver lining for you. on the topic of crazy people, this is a wild story from rochester, new york. a dentist and his wife hosted a pool party where they allegedly mocked juneteenth and did all sorts of other racist stuff. now, naturally they got a ton of blowback. and to defend themselves, they did what might go down in history as the best worst press conference of all-time. >> they say the party was meant to bash liberals, not to be racist. >> i'm here to defend myself of false claims of racism. but before i do that, in full disclosure, i do have a twitter parody account that operates

well, if you didn't see it, it's currently available to stream on disney plus. ♪ ♪ synergy ♪ [ laughter ] now, to prepare for the role, i obviously did a ton of martial arts training. but when i agreed to host the show, i was very surprised to learn that guillermo, our head of security, who let me just reiterate is tasked with protecting my life, has no martial arts training whatsoever. which i think is a bit of a problem. guillermo, how did you even get this job? >> guillermo: i got drunk, and i fall asleep in the parking lot. [ laughter ] >> simu: so i called up my friend chris cowan, who's an action designer on "shang-chi." we decided to whip guillermo into fighting shape. ♪

[ laughter ] >> we missed our window, i'm sorry, yeah. i'm 8 1/2 months pregnant. >> simu: congratulations, that's incredible. [ laughter ] >> it's -- it's a little harder now. because i have an 18-month-old toddler that i'm chasing around. so it's not like i can nap on a he whim anymore. but it is nice. i mean, for any of those pregnant folks out there, people that have been pregnant, everyone is so generous. doors are opened for you. seats are given for you. once the baby comes, that's not really -- >> simu: you're on your own at that point? >> you're on your own for sure. i'm really owning these last few months of being taken care of by the world. >> simu: how old is gus now? he's just over a year. >> yeah, 18 months, actually. a year and a half. >> simu: we got something from a video that you posted of gus eating some pasta. >> yeah. >> pa-ta! pa-ta! carbs. he loves his carbs. >> simu: i think that's the way that everyone should eat pasta, personally. >> wouldn't it be great? >> simu: yeah. i don't know if you've decided on a name for your second baby yet, but i know for gus the way you announced it to family and friends is you sent them puzzles. >> a puzzle, yeah. i feel like we're going to do the same for this guy. we have decided on a name. and i don't want the second child syndrome to set in where, you know, you've gotten all of the fun stuff out of the way with the first kid. >> simu: right. >> i want our second son to be like, okay, mom and dad really did make an effort with me as well. i'm sure we will find some creative way to tell our families the name before the baby comes. >> simu: that's good. otherwise, like imagine your older brother is like, i got announced with a puzzle, and then -- >> i know. exactly. >> simu: some instagram post or something. >> exactly. >> simu: you have an album that you released earlier this year. >> i did. >> simu: i listened to it. it's incredible. >> thanks.

>> simu: and it's your seventh album. >> it is, yeah. [ cheers and applause ] >> simu: i don't want to make you feel old or anything, but i grew up listening to your music. >> thank you. >> simu: how does it feel releasing an album now versus, say, 15, 20 years ago? do you feel like the landscape has changed? >> everything has changed dramatically. i mean, i'm 38. i put my first record out when i was 15. so yes, the world looks dramatically different now. like, radio feels like it's less of a thing to sort of break an artist. >> simu: right. >> the fact that i think social media out there has sort of allowed people to sort of be their own boss in a way. you don't need kind of like the machinery i think of like a label and mtv and all of that to sort of break an artist anymore. >> simu: yeah. >> so it's nice to have i guess freedom back in artists' hands in that sense. >> simu: now, you co-wrote your album with your husband?

>> i did, yeah. >> simu: how did that -- how did the dynamic work? did you write songs about each other every time you had an argument? [ laughter ] >> no, so my husband, taylor goldsmith, is in a band called dawes who actually played on the show here quite a bit. [ applause ] he and i wrote my last record that came out right before covid hit. and then started working on this record kind of as a response to being home and being cooped up and finding a way to still sort of be creative and have a cathartic outlet to sort of process everything that was going on. then i became pregnant. so there was so much fodder to sort of -- to write about. and he's the most prolific writer i know. and i have the utmost respect for him in the fact that we have this shared passion, and we can sort of find a way to meld it together and work together. and he came on tour with me, he's in my band. like, it's so much fun to kind of make it a bit of a family affair. >> simu: you've got a wonderful, healthy relationship, i get it, thank you. [ laughter ]

>> sorry. >> simu: no, that's wonderful. iknow that you had to cut your tour a little bit short? >> yeah. >> simu: how are you feeling about that? are you planning on kind of resuming once the baby is born? >> yeah, so we hit the road for the first time in 15 years. something i've been dreaming about doing for so long. and i figured because i shot season five of "this is us" pregnant most of the time, oh, i can go out and tour, i can ride on a tour bus, hang out with my toddler. and it was exceptionally, exceedingly more difficult than i realized. so we did about half the tour then i was like, you know what, i have to listen so my body and sort of draw boundaries and take care of myself and take care of my health. and so -- i know eventually we'll get back out on the road. it was so much fun to play those shows and play old songs and new songs. [ applause ] it was just real wish fulfillment for me. but yeah, i think we'll find a

way at some point. maybe the children won't come. might be a little easier to do by myself. >> simu: i see. i see. >> yeah, i can't wait to get back on the road. >> simu: that's great. i heard or i read that you didn't have the best tour bus on the tour? is that true? >> we didn't. i mean, i'm -- i'm not one to complain. every band is on the road right now. >> simu: yeah. >> because covid sort of shut down the touring business. so, you know, our tour was this tiny, scrappy tour. and we were only out on the road for six weeks. so i think we kind of got bumped down the totem pole in terms of the fun, brand-new buses. i think our bus was way older than the last time i went on the road. it must have been the late '90s. which would have been fine. but there were no shocks. so it was like trying to sleep on a wooden roller coaster every night. >> simu: yeah, that's awful. >> yeah, this is probably not going to work out in the long run, i can't sleep. >> simu: mandy, you can tell us who took those better trailers from a pregnant woman. >> i don't know who they are. >> simu: was it shawn mendes? [ laughter ]

was it justin bieber? drake for sure would steal a trailer from a pregnant woman, i think. [ laughter ] you touched on shooting the final season of "this is us." >> yeah. [ cheers and applause ] >> simu: which has been such a phenomenon. i mean, to have touched audiences for so long with your character. i mean, how did it feel to shoot out the last moments of the show? >> very emotional. i think for all of us. because you know, even on a film set it's like, you grow so close. you shared such intimate moments with this family. >> simu: yes. >> and six seasons of being with our crew and our cast. it was really hard to sort of say good-bye. and simultaneously saying good-bye to this character. i'm like, oh, this is like slipping into a pair of comfortable shoes every day at work. i can't fathom, like, not telling these stories anymore, telling the story of this family. so i think i'm still processing the fact that it's over in a

way, because we would typically be shooting right now. be shooting the next season. but yeah. i'm excited to sort of look forward to whatever's next. >> simu: now, you play -- for those of you who watch the show will know this, but you play slightly older than you are now. maybe a lot older than you are now. >> yeah. >> simu: and what was the makeup process like for that? and are you at least relieved to not have to do that anymore? >> i even miss the makeup process. yeah, i played the matriarch of this family from her mid-20s to her mid-80s. >> simu: when you're walking out of your trailer as an 85-year-old woman, do you feel like people treat you any different even though they know it's makeup? >> yeah. i mean, again, our crew, the majority of whom had been with us the entire run of the show, it's like everyone's voices got softer. they were a little more gentle. people wanted to help me like out of my chair. like i'm still mandy. but thank you. i appreciate it. >> simu: here, let me help you sit down. >> absolutely. there was a lot of care given when i was 85. >> simu: so sweet. >> it was very sweet.

[ cheers and applause ] ♪ >> simu: welcome back. i am here with mandy moore and we are celebrating "this is us," we're celebrating your new album and that's all fantastic. i do want to talk about something a little bit earlier on in your career, because it had such a crazy, profound impact on my life. this is actually the 20th anniversary of the release of "a walk to remember." [ cheers and applause ] >> oh my goodness, it is. >> simu: you guys remember it. you guys have seen it. o.g. nicholas sparks movie. you played a high schooler, a priest's daughter who falls in love with a bad boy from the other side of the tracks. >> yeah. >> simu: played by the very handsome shane west. >> yes. >> simu: you've actually crossed paths with quite a few heartthrobs in your day. >> i have. >> simu: you toured with nsync, the backstreet boys.

[ laughter ] >> well, "a walk to remember" was -- i had been in "the princess diaries," but this was like technically my first leading role, my first on-screen kiss, with shane. i was 16. i turned 17 while we were making the movie in wilmington, north caroina, which is where "dawson's creek" shot. so there was a lot of, like, teen romance cachet in my orbit at that time. i unfortunately, obviously, bein the uncool young person, it's not like i got to hang out with any of those fun people. people often ask me, oh -- i toured with nsync and the backstreet boys when i was 15. did i get to hang out with them? i'm like, they wanted to hang out with a little loser like me? [ laughter ] no way, they were like -- >> simu: absolutely. >> no way. i was like the annoying kid

sister that they probably had no idea i was even on the road with them. but i was like just such a super nerdy fan. >> simu: i refuse to believe that. you were incredible in the movie. >> thanks. >> simu: my favorite part -- i mean, i love the list. i love, you know, the two places at once. >> oh, yes. straddling the state line. >> simu: the state line. and i love also that, you know, people were expected to believe that you were just a plain, average-looking girl just by tying her hair up. [ laughter ] which i don't think anybody bought. >> well, i did dye my hair brown. i became a brunette for that movie. i had been a blond previously. so i love that that was their -- you know, trying to trick people. oh, but she's mousey because she has brown hair! [ laughter ] i'm like, okay. >> simu: well, the film was great. the film's soundtrack was great. you contributed, you know, a couple of songs. >> a couple of songs, yes. >> simu: you had "only hope." >> yep. ♪ there's a song that's inside ♪ >> yeah.

[ laughter ] then a bright light would shine, so they let you know he's recording. so when my scene came on in the movie theater, it was just a bright flashlight on his face. [ laughter ] looking at me like -- i'm like, dad, what are you -- i ripped it off, i'm like you're committing a federal crime right now. [ laughter ] recording in a movie theater an. so he's banned, he's done. >> simu: but you bought him those glasses, right? that was a present from you? >> yes, yes and no. >> simu: describe what these are. so they're ray-bans but they're like spy glasses? >> yeah, yeah. this is not an ad for ray-bans. but i bought him an ipad. i thought as i agood son a nice gift for his birthday.

[ laughter ] >> simu: tell me about your role in "me time." you play a guy who's -- is that a perm? >> i wanted to get a perm so bad. i was channeling -- he's a villain, but i want him to not look necessarily intimidating, not act intimidating. >> simu: oh, no, straight scary, that was frightening. >> i think when people are truly scary, they don't try to act scary but dress scary. right? he's like i ahancock park dad with like a lavender jacket. i'm like, i want to get a perm. they wouldn't let me. they're like, i don't know, a perm is permanent, it might mess up your hair. so they gave me a wig that's the exact same length as my hair but a permed wig. so i look quite ridiculous. >> simu: you look great, man.

how was it working with kevin hart and mark wahlberg? >> oh, they're great. kevin hart, he's amazing. he's like the guy in comedy right now. so first day on set i'm like i hope he knows i'm a comedian, i hope he knows who i am. you know what i mean? >> simu: yeah. >> but he did. and he was very nice. they're both just so in the moment. they're great partners in a scene. they improvise. they're superstars, but they also like gave all of us plenty of space to work with it. it was just really fun. >> simu: they also, i feel like, both have 40 businesses each. did you like learn any of that from them? or did you -- >> yeah. they -- i was at the premiere last night. they both had their tequila brands here. i think everyone has a tequila brand now. >> simu: everyone has a tequila, yeah. >> now, i don't know if i can compete with like the rock's -- oh, wait a minute. you have -- >> simu: this is not tequila. but i -- >> this is your venture? is this your venture? >> simu: you came here with all this dim sum, i feel like i don't want to come empty-handed. but this is -- >> we've got some boba.
