passed away after ingesting this toxic chemical. despite the facility describing the liquid as a dishwashing liquid. the family says it was stronger than that. trudy maxwell was 93 years old. she was a mother of nine, had 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. these are the filters her daughter shared with us. the family believes her mother was given dish detergent. on the product website, ultraclean is described as a high alkaline formula designed to remove grease, starch and protein soils. her daughter said, we would like to clarify that this was not regular dishwasher detergent that was given, but a highly concentrated, commercial grade cleaner. people familiar with the case believes the chemical was confused with cranberry juice. in a statement, atria senior leaving -- living says they can

confirm three of their residents were transported to the hospital after mistakenly being served dishwashing liquid. attorney catherine stefani or is not involved in the case but has filed 10 lawsuits against atria senior living. two of them for elderly oblique -- elderly abuse at the facility where trudy was given a toxic chemical. >> we have had cases of bedsores , people have fallen multiple times because of low staffing. luz: stegner believes this case has similarities to some of her past ones. do you think the latest incident was related to be shortstaffed? >> shortstaffed and/or short -- poor training. if they are busy, they do things like this. this person was not trained, obviously. luz: police confirmed trudy and two other residents were given the chemical sunday evening but did not confirm if this took place during dinner, or how it happened.

>> upon getting that phone call, we initiated a death investigation. after we were able to see what was going on and learned two additional parties were also hospitalized. more than three people have been interviewed. luz: the family confirmed trudy had dementia and lived at the senior living facility s no of 2020. the facility has not confirmed if the detergent in -- was given to the residence. as to the other two seniors, their current health status has not been updated. kristen: former soviet premier mikhail gorbachev, one of the most influential figures of the last half of the 20th century has died. gorbachev took power in 1985, enacting economic and political reform that led to the end of the cold war.

change is part of the problem. >> videos like these of red tide devastating aquatic life have shown just how rare this bloom has come. >> this type of organism has been observed in the bay before, but not to this level. we really don't understand the mechanism of what is causing these fish kills. that is why we are working on trying to understand the mechanism. zach: the bloom started sometime around late july and it is spreading. experts do not know how long it will last. >> we are still studying it and monitoring it. >> officials in the east bay park district want to keep another form of algae top of mind into the holiday weekend. >> we've got blue-green algae in most of the lakes in california. certain species can create toxins that are harmful to humans and pets. >> kyle mcclain is the supervisor of the east bay

one million vials have been made available across the country. more are coming. in michigan, a manufacturing plant will produce more of the vaccine, doubling the supply. today, the monkeypox response team announced a plan to administer shots at large lgbtq events. several of those events are here in the bay area. >> we will be allocating an additional supply of vials to two festivals in oakland, california. the pride festival this weekend and pride fest on september 11. this allocation will allow up to 2400 additional vaccinations. we are not stopping there. i am happy to report we are working with additional jurisdictions to make sure we are able to set up that other key festivals. karina: the other festivals include providing 6000 doses at severed decadence festivals in new orleans and black pride atlanta. the white house announced a new

pilot program they are calling the equity intervention program. that allows health departments across the country to request 100 vials of the vaccine per jurisdiction to be distributed at smaller events and clinics specifically reaching high risk individuals facing barriers to access. part of the goal is to reach the black and latino lgbtq communities. kristen: thank you. with the golden gate bridge set to get a suicide prevention net by next year, first responders are preparing to do rescues. recently, the golden gate bridge district purchased a space for a training center in strawberry. while they are used rope rescues, the bridge is a different story. they will need to figure out anchor points and how to get someone out of the net. captain travis fox with the district explains the training process. >> it is going to be a portion of the actual net itself hanging off our tower.

kristen: a remarkable wetlands restoration taking place in the bay area. larry: spencer is back with a look at how it can help fight climate change. spencer: nearly a year since cruz breached the levees on this title marsh in the east bay. it is already providing critical data for researchers. >> we are looking out over the little dutch slough. larry: -- spencer: it is a big success story. the california department of water resources and partners are restoring a vibrant title marsh in an ongoing project stretching across more than 1100 acres in eastern contra costa county. while it is a dramatic view, back on the ground, the site is already becoming a powerful living laboratory for climate

french toast sticks starting at $2.00 are back at jack in the box. >> now from abc7 come live breaking news. >> a massive police response to shots fired on the south bay freeway. an off-duty san jose police officers personal vehicle was hit by gunfire. you see the officers with heads down, sweeping the freeway and searching for casings and clues. the officer whose vehicle was struck was not injured. he did not see a gun, but heard a pop and pulled over and saw a bullet hole in his front passenger door. the suspect was in a white hatchback with no license plates. it happened before 2:00 today on northbound 101. a stretch was closed while the investigation is underway. sky 7 is over the scene. you can see the freeway open to traffic. it is slow going.
