living facility in san mateo. >> it is inconceivable that a dishwashing liquid ends up in a container that is given to a patient. it was a complete failure somewhere. j.r.: trudy's daughter tweeted abc news to say that this was not a commercial dishwasher, but a commercial grade cleaner. she believes her mother was given this red detergent called ultra klene. the product is described as a high alkaline formula designed to remove tough grease and oils. people familiar with the case believe the chemical was confused with cranberry juice. atria senior living said that three of their residents were sent to the hospital recently after being served dishwashing liquid as drinking juice.

elder abuse lawyers were not involved in this case, kathryn stebner spoke about what investigators are looking at and how something like this could have happened. >> what weather safety protocols? -- what were the safety protocols? >> either shortstaffed and/or poor training. because if there is only one person there and they do too much, they do things like this. j.r.: san mateo police confirmed that trudy and two others were given the toxic chemical on sunday evening but not confirmed if that happened during dinner. we expect more information from police in this case for the next 24 hours to help fill in some of the gaps. j.r. stone, abc 7 news. ama: in the east bay, oakland is searching for solutions after

another wave of violence has shaken the city. since last thursday, there have been six killings, almost equal to last year's total number of killings this time last year. 13-year-old was shot by a 12-year-old on monday at madison park academy. a rally took place at the steps of city hall where police chief leronne armstrong pleaded for peace. >> put the guns down and stop it. give us a break. six homicides in four days. give us a break. ama: many of the people at today's rally have a similar message that it is time for the community to do more. dan: with the november election coming up, candidates for the oakland mayoral race participated in a debate this evening. tim johns was there and has more on what was discussed. tim: with a few months left until the november election, eight candidates took the state

dan: the state assembly has passed governor newsom's plan to get people with severe mental illness into treatment. this proposal is designed to help people who are suffering on the streets of the bay area, as hundreds are here. his plan would require all counties to set up a mental health branch and civil board and provide treatment to those suffering from psychosis. it will also force some people into care. a report by two uc riverside professors accused the governor of stripping people from their own life choices. bill goes back to the senate for another vote. ama: mikhail gorbachev has died after a lengthy illness. he took power in 1985 and enacted economic and political reform that led to the end of the cold war.

however, his grip on power quickly faded, leading to his resignation on christmas day 1991. the soviet union collapsed a day later. gorbachev visited the bay area many times over the years. >> frankly, it is a loss for the world. he was an unusual human being, but he put together a program that allowed soviet union to do what it did and create an opportunity for world peace to be the beneficiary. it was incredible. ama: mikhail gorbachev is survived by his daughter. he was 91 years old. dan: a person in texas with monkeypox has died, but it is not clear if that person -- if that was the reason they died. the cdc does say that monkeypox is rarely fatal.

the united states is working to make more monkeypox vaccine available in the meantime. a new manufacturing plant in michigan will double the capacity to make the vaccine. today, the white house monkeypox response team has announced a release of vaccines at large lgbtq evidence -- evidence. -- events. >> we will release them at events including pride fest on september 11. this will allow up to 1400 additional vaccinations. dan: they are also launching a program to have health departments across the country per jurisdiction to be distributed at smaller events and clinics, specifically reaching high-risk individuals facing barriers to access. ama: nasa is giving the artemis
