tuesday's shooting, parts of the highway were shut down for hours. offices are searching for evidence on foot as an off-duty officer was driving his personal car when it was struck by at least one billet -- bullets. the chp reported that the man heard a pop, pulled over, and noticed a bullet hole on the front of his door. drivers in the area reacting to the news. >> it is frightening, but not uncommon. amanda: regimen shuford is referencing other bay area shootings. the suspect's a vehicle is a white hatchback with no license plates. details on what may have led to the shooting have yet to be released, but some say the incident serves as a reminder to be mindful of your behavior behind the wheeled. >> it is a reminder to focus on where to go, and if someone

honks a horn, do not honk back. keep your eyes on the road and pay attention to where you are going. amanda: sky 7 captured several drivers stuck in traffic making their own detours. >> people were turning around and going up the on-ramp. i saw trucks going up the hillside, so people were losing it a bit. amanda: the shooting investigation and search for the person responsible is ongoing. others on tuesday say they understand there is a level of uncertainty when they hop in the driver's pete -- seat. >> it could have been a lot worse. dan: parts of the bay area could see record heat by the end of the week. it's to abc7news meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya: the most intense heat will hit this weekend when we are expected to hit records.

we have a heat watches from 11:00 a.m. on saturday until 3:00 p.m. on tuesday. hot enough to make you sick, especially when overnight temperatures are not going to drop much. as you take a look at what is going to happen, it will heat up this week. you will notice the inland heat will start to shift westward. look at the temperature trend for concord, triple digits on saturday through monday. dangerous heat up and down the west coast, excessive heat watches, warnings, and advisories in effect. i will be back with a full look at the holiday weekend forecast coming up. ama: thank you. with the intense heat wave looming, californians are being warned to cut back on electricity use. monday the fifth is expected to strain the state's power grid the most.

living facility in san mateo. >> it is inconceivable that a dishwashing liquid ends up in a container that is given to a patient. it was a complete failure somewhere. j.r.: trudy's daughter tweeted abc news to say that this was not a commercial dishwasher, but a commercial grade cleaner. she believes her mother was given this red detergent called ultra klene. the product is described as a high alkaline formula designed to remove tough grease and oils. people familiar with the case believe the chemical was confused with cranberry juice. atria senior living said that three of their residents were sent to the hospital recently after being served dishwashing liquid as drinking juice.

elder abuse lawyers were not involved in this case, kathryn stebner spoke about what investigators are looking at and how something like this could have happened. >> what weather safety protocols? -- what were the safety protocols? >> either shortstaffed and/or poor training. because if there is only one person there and they do too much, they do things like this. j.r.: san mateo police confirmed that trudy and two others were given the toxic chemical on sunday evening but not confirmed if that happened during dinner. we expect more information from police in this case for the next 24 hours to help fill in some of the gaps. j.r. stone, abc 7 news. ama: in the east bay, oakland is searching for solutions after

another wave of violence has shaken the city. since last thursday, there have been six killings, almost equal to last year's total number of killings this time last year. 13-year-old was shot by a 12-year-old on monday at madison park academy. a rally took place at the steps of city hall where police chief leronne armstrong pleaded for peace. >> put the guns down and stop it. give us a break. six homicides in four days. give us a break. ama: many of the people at today's rally have a similar message that it is time for the community to do more. dan: with the november election coming up, candidates for the oakland mayoral race participated in a debate this evening. tim johns was there and has more on what was discussed. tim: with a few months left until the november election, eight candidates took the state

for debate on tuesday night, all vying to be the city's next mayor. one of the issues discussed was how to check the crime problem. >> there is a lack of accountability and ensuring that people have safety. tim: other topics included how to provide more affordable housing for everyone. >> we have to get government bureaucracy out of the way because the more time that we create, time is money. tim: many candidates used the debate to offer aggressive policy proposals while also being candid about the problems that oakland faces. >> we have a similar style police force but their metrics are better than ours. tim: while some cited their years of working in city leadership -- >> i planted the seed so i can get started on the real work. tim: others promised voters a

dan: the state assembly has passed governor newsom's plan to get people with severe mental illness into treatment. this proposal is designed to help people who are suffering on the streets of the bay area, as hundreds are here. his plan would require all counties to set up a mental health branch and civil board and provide treatment to those suffering from psychosis. it will also force some people into care. a report by two uc riverside professors accused the governor of stripping people from their own life choices. bill goes back to the senate for another vote. ama: mikhail gorbachev has died after a lengthy illness. he took power in 1985 and enacted economic and political reform that led to the end of the cold war.

however, his grip on power quickly faded, leading to his resignation on christmas day 1991. the soviet union collapsed a day later. gorbachev visited the bay area many times over the years. >> frankly, it is a loss for the world. he was an unusual human being, but he put together a program that allowed soviet union to do what it did and create an opportunity for world peace to be the beneficiary. it was incredible. ama: mikhail gorbachev is survived by his daughter. he was 91 years old. dan: a person in texas with monkeypox has died, but it is not clear if that person -- if that was the reason they died. the cdc does say that monkeypox is rarely fatal.

the united states is working to make more monkeypox vaccine available in the meantime. a new manufacturing plant in michigan will double the capacity to make the vaccine. today, the white house monkeypox response team has announced a release of vaccines at large lgbtq evidence -- evidence. -- events. >> we will release them at events including pride fest on september 11. this will allow up to 1400 additional vaccinations. dan: they are also launching a program to have health departments across the country per jurisdiction to be distributed at smaller events and clinics, specifically reaching high-risk individuals facing barriers to access. ama: nasa is giving the artemis

launch another shot on saturday. they have the launch by monday, or it will have to be delayed until later this month. the mission is meant to serve as a test flight ahead of nasa's return to the moon in 2024. dan: and we have been reporting extensively on the red tide algae bloom that has killed marine life across the bay area. there is another type of algae people need to be on the alert for as well. blue-green algae is toxic and can be harmful to humans and pets. majority of the districts listed on the website have some sort of advisory up. the park district has this advice. >> when you are swimming, try to keep the water out of your mouth and when you come out, rinse off and towel dry. dan: experts say the warmer

weather expected in the coming days will likely cause the algae blooms to spread. ama: not just warm but hot. dan: it is brutal. we have talked about this, how sticky and sweltering it is. sandhya: we have a summer scorcher coming our way and i want to show you that holiday heatwave. here's a quick look at what you can expect. dangerous heat and with that extreme heat comes afire dangers. mid- to upper 100's inland. you will notice 90's along the bay and 60's and 70's along the coastline. high-pressure over the desert and it is shifting westward. that is what will bring us the heat as you take a look at the temperature spread for saturday. you go from the 60's coast side to the triple digits on saturday. the numbers soared to a different level. you're 15 or 25 degrees above

average. as we head into monday, this computer model is pushing some of the temperatures up into the 110 category, but it is only one computer model, so keep that in mind. it is going to be dangerous. the national weather service has already issued a weekend heat risk outlook, and they are saying that inland areas will be in the moderate to high category , possibly very high which is in the magenta, so be careful. stay hydrated and cool, limit your outdoor plans, never leave kids and pets in the cars, and check on elderly and pets. there is a high risk of heat illnesses with this heatwave, so for now, enjoy the little warm-up we got today. from our san jose camera, clear skies and moderate air quality. lack of strong sea breeze will keep the quality in the moderate category. dangerous stretch of hot days this week.
