governor newsom warned about the upcoming heatwave abc 7 news. anchor karina nova live in the newsroom with the latest karina. well larry this afternoon governor newsom address that heatwave expected to impact californians as you just heard for about a week some areas expecting to hit triple digits. the governor talked about our energy needs and our energy reliability, which is why the flex alert is in effect also today newsome signed and executive order like he's done the last two years to ramp up the state's energy supply as part of that businesses and those in the industrial sector are being asked to reduce their demand and while for the most part we as residents know what to do during these heat events. the governor says this one is more concerning. in one part of california death valley, they will look to experience in the next hour or two hundred and twenty degree temperatures projected to be as high as 122 in california and death valley tomorrow.

apple tv, amazon fire and android tv. all right moving on to other news now new details about complaints the state has received about san mateo's atria park senior living facility a 93 year old woman died there after she was given commercial grade cleaner instead of -- abc 7 news reporter to lose peña has the latest on the investigation. we dug into the latest records from the california department of social services and confirmed atria park in san mateo has been investigated at least nine times by state officials since 2017 prior to the death of 93 year old trudy maxwell after she was given what atra described as dishwashing liquid instead of drinking juice. the states received 12 complaints from this facility some alleging a resident who sustained multiple unexplained injuries while under the care of facility staff staff failing to give medications as prescribed staff not meeting residents

medical needs and not transporting residents to medical appointments one of the allegations also accuses atria of illegally evicting a resident attorney katherine stabner has filed multiple lawsuits against atria senior living in the last 15 years all the cases settling outside of court two of them involving agents at the same facility or trudy maxwell and two other seniors were giving a toxic chemical over the weekend stepner believes. these complaints are just a tip of the iceberg. it's gross negligence. what happened? it's gross negligence, you know, and it's elder abuse stebner is not involved in the maxwell case, but as facilities like atria are sure staffed in a nursing home. they are supposed to have 3.5 nursing hours per patient day an assisted living like atria. there are no numbers that people have to set a complaint investigation report from march of 2021 listed allegations of quote this facility lacking

sufficient staff to meet arrested in needs facility staff not qualified facility member did not properly assess residents after falling and didn't treat resident with dignity and respect in a statement, california department of social services. do not confirm even inspector had been to the facility to invest negate the latest incident and said in part the department is conducting an investigation and working with local law enforcement the department cannot comment on ongoing investigations tepner believes a state has enough grounds to give atria more than a fine in this case state should put them on probation for something like that and watch them very closely. and if they don't meet their probationary requirements, they should shut them down in san francisco loose pena ab. nine year old boy was injured in a shooting on an east bay freeway. this happened just before 10 last night on eastbound interstate 580 east of fruitvale avenue in oakland detectives.

and we're learning new details about the death of fran the humpback whale found dead over the weekend on a beach near half. moon bay. fran was a well-known whale off the coast of california and today we found out how she was killed. finding strongly implicate that the whale die due to blunt force trauma associated with a ship strike ship strikes and entanglements are two of the leading causes of death for large. whales and the numbers that are reported are not the numbers that are happening in reality off our coast. experts say as many as 80 whales die each year as a result of ship strikes most sink to the bottom of the ocean. hearing will be held tomorrow in san francisco in an attempt to protect whales from ship strikes. we have breaking news in san francisco where firefighters have just called a third alarm on an apartment building fire. this is a live look at the scene at the corner of divisadero and haight streets. fire department says there are no injuries right now and crews are asking people to avoid the

solutions. this is abc 7 news. millions of people will soon be able to receive updated boosters targeting two different covid-19 strains in just one shot the fda has cleared two options. the cdc is expected to give its authorization tomorrow abc news reporter alexis. christopherous has the latest the fda issuing emergency use authorization for its first update to covid vaccines targeting the original strain and the most common omicron strain the updated boosters contained the same basic ingredients as the original covid-19 mrna vaccines, but are modified to target the circulating omicron variant va4 and va-5. as well as the strain that was included in the original vaccine visors modified booster is for people 12 and older for now moderna's shot for those 18 and up the hope is that the retooled boosters will prevent a winter surge as we head into fall and

my project is growing and germinating milkweed seeds. i have 1200 at home and then 500 here at the sonoma garden park and it's also being able to have them in broader locations. so not just localized in one area. so i've been doing it at local schools. i've reached out to wineries and golf courses and so we want them out and we also want people to know about them. milkweed is monarchs host plant. so each butterfly has our own hose plant where they lay their eggs, so they're caterpillars depend on it and their their life cycles depend on it. so specifically for monarchs they're host plant is milkweed and up here are native plant is native narrow leaf milkweed. so that's what i've been planting. so these are some of the plants that i planted these are this is native narrow leaf milkweed. i believe i've given away two more of these trays of 50, so that would be a hundred but these are about six months old so they have a lot of growth a
