forecast now. you know how to save energy, you have heard of the advice before, turn off extra lights -- lights,, live with your home being warm for little longer. ama: we are in the situation because of a brutal heat wave hitting california. it will get dangerously hot. it will be days before we get long-term relief. we sent several reporters on the topic of hot weather. dan: let's hear from the expert, our meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya: live in an era of extremes. on the roof it is comfortable but that will change dramatically. let me show you what you can expect this holiday weekend. we're looking at a heatwave with the heat risk intensifying saturday, and 100s. saturday the temperature has come up to record levels. on labor day it is extreme heat up to 108 degrees. 80's along the bay. on the coast it will be in the 70's. all inland areas will be going

under and excessive heat warning, highs to 108 degrees. excessive heat watch covering the coast and shoreline. lake county expected to get to 110 degrees. this is not just a bay area event. up and down the state we have watches and warnings. labor day weekend is going to be a toasty one. these are some tips to keep you safe. never leave pets or kids inside of cars. heat is the number one killer in the u.s. stay hydrated and cool, limit your outdoor plans during the heat of the day and check on relatives and neighbors. i will let you know how many days you can expect this hot weather and when there might be a little sign of relief. ama: we will check back in with you. these hot temperatures are going to affect millions across the state. governor newsom warned about what to expect. abc7news anchor is in the new room -- newsroom. >> governor newsom address the heatwave, expected to impact

californians for a week. some areas will have to deal with the triple digits for multiple days. the governor talked about our energy needs and our energy reliability, which is why the flex alert is in effect today and tomorrow. today, newsom signed an executive order, like he is done the last two years to ramp up the state's energy supply is of that business and those in the industrial sector are being asked to reduce their demand. while, for the most part, we as residents know what to do during these heat events, the governor says this one is more concerning . >> in death valley, they will look to experience the next hour or two, 120 degree temperatures projected to be as high as 122 in california in death valley tomorrow. we are anticipating this extreme heat to be a length and duration the likes of with -- which we have not seen in a long time. where used to record-breaking

extremely dry conditions, the threat of fires is another big concern. hill says most are caused by human activity. >> malfunctioning vehicles, vehicles dragging chains on trailers, people in those vehicles, carelessly discarding smoking material, those are all things that are preventable, especially the last one. reporter: in the east bay, abc7news. ama: bart says if temperatures get above 100 degrees it plans to slow down trains. this is a new policy. it is because of a derailment in june when excessive heat the warped the rails and cause cars to jump the tracks. 50 people were on that train, only a few had minor injuries. the heatwave is coming just as a massive sweep of san jose homeless encampment is said to start. as abc7news reporter zach fuentes found out, some at delayed because of the weather. reporter: it's been more than a airport, before the heatwave was

dan: ask hundred acre wildfire has shut down all lanes of i-5 in southern california not far from the grapevine. l.a. county fire departments says seven firefighters had heat related injuries and five had to be taken to the hospital. the heat is brutal. the route fire is burning in castaic in triple digit temperatures. it is burning a rural area, there are mandatory evacuations. an excessive heat warning is in effect through monday night. ama: 12 people are displaced after a fire at a san francisco parma building. this is new video showing smoke and fire in of divisadero apartment building. the red cross is helping residents find temporary housing. in the south bay firefighters have put out fire on cinnabar

hills golf course. we got an overhead view in south san jose. the fire started just after 4:00 and burned about five acres. no structures were damaged and no reports of any injuries. dan: oakland police have a lead on a triple homicide and they want your help, they recently released of a gold car in connection with an incident last friday that left three people dead. that gold car is easy to spot. around 7:15 last night on martin luther king junior weight on 29th street two people were shot and a cyclist was hit by car, involved in the shooting. three mine -- men died. ama: gunfire on an east bay freeway injured a nine-year-old boy. the child is expected to recover. a woman driving the car was injured when she exited the freeway and crashed. you can see what looks like a bullet hole in the door. let's hit the door around 10:00, east of fruitvale avenue in

oakland, it happened a few blocks away from 30 for the avenue. investigators do not have a motive or suspect. dan: education, an important art of building a better bay area and addressing the country's teacher shortage will require all hands on deck effort, according to one of the largest job-search companies in country. the binding administration announced three companies, indeed, zip recruiter and handshake will help school district hire teachers they need. our senior education reporter explains the problem is evident in large urban areas like san francisco and oakland. >> three years from now you want to be done with school but you also want to support -- reporter: finding and retaining teachers for subjects like english is not easy for san francisco public schools. the challenge is hiring in special education, math, science and lingwood arts. there are 19 classes, districtwide, that do not have a permanent teacher. >> for those 19 classroom

vacancies we are filling them with substitutes, which we know is not ideal. reporter: the shortage is not exclusive to san francisco. school districts, those in big urban areas, are calling it a national crisis. >> absolutely. it is a challenge. we have been expanding our efforts to recruit educators by holding webinars and sending out flyers. reporter: over the summer, san francisco and oakland unified asked parents if they knew of anyone who wanted to apply for a teaching position. >> we know that this has been a problem for a long time. reporter: the biden administration announced several major job-search companies will help districts recruit and hire prospective teachers. zip recruiter will have an online job portal specifically for k-12 schools. indeed, conduct virtual hiring fares for educators across the country. and handshake will share job openings with undergraduate college students, majoring in education.

are on your screen. ama: studying in scorching heat is a challenge that some students living at cal state east will experience first-hand. many of the dorms do not have air conditioning. as our reporter explains, the university is making plans to help students find cool places the study. >> on top of this hill, cal state east students and not have to worry about how temperatures. this weekend will be different. >> it is only a heater. i'm not sure i know the technical parts, we don't have ac reporter: this freshman says his dorm only has fans, no ac. he will have to find cool weather somewhere else on campus. >> i will go to the library because we do not have ac. reporter: the university is telling students not to exhaust themselves or getting to class. >> have a very large campus. students have to walk between buildings. pace yourself, take your time. h cal state east bay says most of their buildings will remain open during the weekend even on labor day to help students

tickle. >> -- help students stay cool. >> students need a little reprieve, buildings will be open for them to be in and cool off during the day. reporter: the dorms that do not have air conditioning usually house freshman. some that do have air conditioning, student say it does not even work well. this senior says she has not experienced to many hot days in her time at school. but she is getting ready for one of the hottest weekends she remembers. >> the breezes helpful in the mornings and evenings. but during the afternoon, it is so hot. reporter: the right now keeping the buildings open should help the students on campus. but going forward, they will examine whether every building needs air conditioning. >> air conditioning is one of the main things that is being taken into consideration, given our changing climate and the number of heat waves we have been having over the years. reporter: in hayward, ryan curry abc7 news. ama: how hot are we getting?

dan: extreme, it sounds like. sandhya patel tracking it. sandhya: that is why i want to start with something that we do not typically start with, that is the accuweather 7 day forecast. this is going to be a prolonged period of very hot, dangerously hot weather ahead. tomorrow you get the heat spike with triple digits, friday, 90's. look at the triple digits from saturday through tuesday. then, those temperatures coming down just slightly on wednesday. we will take a closer look, that heatwave is expected to be the longest and hottest of the season, so far. as you know, we get heat in october as well. dangerous heat will be brought by this area of high pressure that will build a westward and as it does we will notice the difference as we head into tomorrow. today, temperatures were in the low 60's to upper 90's, inland. tomorrow we will get into the triple digit territory. 8:00 in the morning, 50's and

ama: a quarter of a century has passed since we lost princess diana, she was in the car with her boyfriend in paris as the paparazzi chase them on august 31, 1997. the driver was reportedly drunk

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions this is abc7 news. dan: if new details about a senior san mateo living facility where a resident died after she was given commercial grade cleaner instead of juice. two others had to go to the hospital. ama: we are learning about prior complaints made to the state about the facility. luz pena has the details. reporter: we dug into the latest records from the california department of social services and confirmed atrium ark in san mateo has been investigated nine times, since 2017, prior to the death of the 93-year-old trudy after she was given, dishwashing liquid instead of drinking juice. the state received a 12 complaints from this facility. some alleging a resident who

sustained him multiple unexplained -- sustained multiple unexplained injuries, staff failing to give medication as described, staff failing to meet medical -- residents needs and not transporting residents to appointments. the accused them, of a legally evicting a resident. in the last 50 years, all the cases settling outside of court two of them involving negligence at the same facility, were trudy maxwell and two other seniors were given ataxic -- a toxic chemical. these complaints are just the tip of the iceberg. >> it is gross negligence. it is elder abuse. reporter: she is not involved in the maxwell case. but facilities like this are shortstaffed. >> in a nursing home there expected have a 3.5 nursing hours per patient per day. in assisted living like this

one, there are no numbers people have to set. reporter: a complaint investigation report for march 2021 listed allegations of this facility lacking sufficient staff to meet resident needs, facility staff not qualified, facility member did not properly assess residence after falling and did not treat residents with dignity and respect. in a statement, california department of social services did not confirm if an inspector visited the facility after the incident. and said, the department is conducting an investigation working with law enforcement. the department did not comment on ongoing investigations. she believes the state has enough grounds to give atria more than a find in this case. >> the state should put them on probation and watch them closely. if they don't meet their probationary requirements they should shut them down. reporter: in san francisco, luz pena abc7 news.

ama: we reached out to get a response but did not hear back. dan: a north bay woman is among the plaintiffs in 17 sexual assault related lawsuits filed today against lyft by both passengers and drivers. an attorney representing the victims calls this a nationwide crisis. this a nap a resident says she was driving for lyft, when she was assaulted by a male passenger in march of 2020. >> when i resisted he wrapped his hands around my neck, choking me and continuing to grope me until we reach the destination. dan: she says lyft provided no training on hound -- how to handle situations like this and was never informed of her rights as a driver. according to a safety report from lyft, the number of sexual assaults during rights increased by 65% from 2017 to 2018 -- 22019. this company provide the statement. it is our understanding that a

number of misleading claims may have been made by the attorneys at today's press conference. the statement also says, our goal is to make every lyft right as safe as possible. we will continue to take action and invest in technology, policies and partnerships to do so. ama: the fda authorize the first updated covid-19 boosters that target today's most common strain, the omicron variant. that means they could begin rolling out between the next week. who should get them and one? dustin dorsey asked local experts and has the answers. reporter: it's been nearly one year since we first got news of the new covid variant, omicron. since then it has spread worldwide. but relief may be finally on the way. the ft has given authorization to the first update to the covid-19 vaccine, a mix of the original recipe and one that targets omicron. >> all vaccines, including boosters are amazing at keeping us away from the hospital and

keeping us from dying. but the new boosters going to add to that. it also will give you a higher chance of preventing breakthrough infection. reporter: this dr. says, it is unclear how well it will work since the vaccine is not seen human trials despite showing positive immune response in mice. a similar method to annual flu shot testing. she has concerns but is hopeful it will be successful in humans as well. >> i see no harm in getting the booster. it's important for me to say. we don't have the data that will -- that it will curb infections. reporter: the cdc is expecting to give the thumbs-up to the vaccine in the coming days. santa clara county's dr. anticipates that they will receive the doses next week. >> it takes several hours to make sure the vaccine is at the right temperature and get it distributed to our different sites. we are looking at, most likely mid to late next week before we can get started. reporter: who should go out and get the shock?

>> from there the hackers appeared to take over his citibank account and wired $65,000 from it. >> it is. called the sim swap attack. it has big consequences. >> that his mark of the internet security firm, check point software technologies. here's how it works. the scam artist purchases your personal identifiable information from the dark web. it goes into a store and pretends he lost his phone. he gets a new sim card and a new phone and connected to your number. verizon says it is investigating. >> we can have -- it can have doering affects, you lose that multifactor at the education -- authentication that you thought you had. >> stephen had trouble logging into a citibank account. a message popped up with what was supposedly a citibank phone number and requested he call. the person who answered asked him for permission to remotely take over his computer. stephen was instructed to login

again to a citibank account and then advise if you waited two hours his troubles would be over. after he hung up, he became suspicious. but it was too late. citibank would later tell him any $1000 had been wired from his account. the person he originally talked to on the phone was an imposter. >> i was led to believe i was working with citibank employees. i did the wrong thing. >> he routinely checks his bank account daily to watch for possible overcharges. >> my money is now -- not falling from the sky. >> someone, somehow managed to change the email address associated with his bank account. within one hour, the hacker made three successive wire transfers of $50,000, $30,000 and $75,000. he spotted the transfers and notified citibank immediately. all three victims we talk to blame citibank for not verifying the transactions with them, by
