with a first look at the forecast. mike: as we get closer to the event, we know the national weather service will tweak the watches and warnings. it's good news for some of us near the coast in san francisco. the excessive heat watch was eliminated. for the marin coastal range and shoreline, those areas in orange including santa cruz were under heat advisory. this goes from 11:00 saturday to monday. the heat will linger longer in those other areas where we have the excessive heat warning, all the way through tuesday. temperatures in the advisory could warm up to 96 degrees. they could warm up to 110 degrees. so far this year, 22 children have succumbed to heatstroke by being left in cars too long, especially in this heat. you might not think it's that hot but a child heats up five times faster than we do as

adults. always look in the backseat before you lock the cars and walk away. you are thinking, i will go in for 10 minutes. in 10 minutes, we could warm up to 120 degrees in the car. 20 minutes, up to 130 degrees. it's not safe for anybody or any pets to be in the car the next several days, even with the windows down. larry: don't leave your kids in the car unattended a number -- under any circumstances. team coverage continues in the north bay. kristen: a look at keeping cool and safe in the heat. reporter: it's toasty up here in fountain grove. it's only going to get harder through the labor day weekend. check this out. a few minutes ago, this went on line. this is a new tool unveiled by firefighters here in santa rosa.

they are wasting no time activating it to predict whether an fire danger. >> we have the excessive heat warning out right now. reporter: firefighters get briefed about the labor day weekend heatwave that is packing enough punch to break records. increasing fire danger. >> the weather station is tracking everything from wind speed to fuel temperatures to air temperatures. reporter: firefighters choosing to deploy this new state-of-the-art remote weather station ahead of the extreme heat, capable of getting real-time fire weather information from the hills to the valley. the device is being installed in the fountain grove neighborhood, scene of the 2017 tubs fire. >> we aren't expecting any wind. when you look at temperatures that high, this tool will allow us to track that in real time and see what our potential is, how dry it is. reporter: cooling centers are opening like the community cultural center in sebastopol.

a safe haven from the heat for those without ac. matt mcdonald and his ac repair crew have been slammed with calls from heated customers. >> what are you guys checking? >> all levels. this guy right here is the high-pressure. reporter: they were trying to prepare an ac compressor in healdsburg. >> this weekend is going to probably be twice as busy as we've been all summer. it's like the end of summer, all the air-conditioners are tired. we are 24/7 right now. we will work all the way through the holiday. reporter: homeowners have checked out the forecast and he's leaving town. >> we get warmer than santa rosa. i'm going to avoid it. i will head up to a cooler area this weekend. reporter: good idea. talking about this weather device, it literally went online 20 minutes ago. it's already transmitting

real-time data back to firefighters. cooling centers will be open through the weekend, into monday for those needing a little bit of peace, quiet, and air conditioning. abc7news. kristen: the large brush fire burning near castaic in southern california has grown to more than 5000 acres in one day. the route fire is burning near interstate five. evacuations remain in place and 500 homes are threatened. seven firefighters who had to be hospitalized due to heat exhaustion have also been released. the entire bay area should be prepared for wildfire. jeremy edwards told us today why on midday live. >> we want to make sure that folks are just prepared for the disasters that they think will happen. we want folks to be prepared for any and all disasters. you know, just because you haven't been experiencing a wildfire last year or you

haven't experienced a hurricane the year before that or it hasn't flooded in your area doesn't mean it won't happen this time around. kristen: every september is designated as national preparedness month. larry: the extreme heat is prompting conker to shut down open spaces. those closures start today and will go through the holiday weekend. lena helen has details. >> i'm just trying to beat the heat and get it in before it gets too hot. reporter: he got in his bike ride just in time before the city of walnut creek shut down. >> when we put people in that environment, we are likely to get more fire starts. if we get a fire start in the wildland area, we want our resources fighting fire, not doing rescues of the public that are in that environment. reporter: this city of walnut creek and concord say they made this decision based purely on the recommendation from contra costa fire. the deputy fire chief says this

closure isn't necessarily because of fire danger but more so to prevent hard to get to 911 calls from happening deeper into city open spaces. >> we know from experience that we are going to see injuries and heat related emergencies. when those emergencies occur a couple miles off the road, down a dirt trail, it takes firefighters and resources to respond to those emergencies. in this heat condition, we could prevent those types of emergencies. >> this is a great decision and also a lot of the emergencies don't happen that deep in. we have people who come out and they don't understand just how critical it is to stay hydrated and to be safe on the trails. reporter: these open spaces will stay closed through labor day and are expected to reopen on tuesday of next week. as of last check, all open spaces and the east bay regional park district are staying open right now despite this recommendation from contra costa

fire. abc7news. kristen: medical experts are urging caution as they heatwave hits the be area. larry: even common activities can be really dangerous in the heat. reporter: labor day weekend means celebrating the end of summer outdoors for a lot of people. this year, health experts want to offer a word of caution even if you are in good health. >> it's a holiday weekend, you want to be outside in the sun, by the shore. but we have to be aware. with these high temperatures, everyone is vulnerable. reporter: dr. michael schmelz says everyone has a different temperature threshold at which our health is impacted by the heat. as low as 90 degrees for some. if you aren't careful as the heatwave drags on, things like gardening, fishing, bike riding can be dangerous. >> going for a walk during the day, normally we may be fine and sweat a little bit and cool off.

but now with these extreme high temperatures, that heat balance that our bodies are trying to cool, that balance has shifted towards the higher end. reporter: that could lead to mild symptoms or serious conditions like heatstroke which could cause irreversible damage to the brain and liver. if you suffer from serious symptoms, you need to seek medical attention immediately. the chief of the kaiser permanente emergency department says he's unfortunately expecting to see more patients this weekend. >> we tend to see an increase in patients presenting to the emergency department with symptoms consistent with a heat related illness. reporter: the doctor says you need to take extra care when it gets this hot. >> definitely understanding and recognizing symptoms early on and knowing when it's time to change or activity, get out of the heat, get into an air-conditioned room, falling cooling measures. start those things early so you aren't missing a sign that is

community and its families is unbelievable. >> i was just talking with a mother last night that lost her second child to gun violence recently. so we have to be mindful that the influx of guns into our communities, huge purchases that were made during the pandemic, those guns are finding their way into the wrong hands. kristen: the city will be getting some help with the recent graduation of 30 officers from the police academy. she says it's about getting hope to people and giving people hope for a very positive life. the city of oakland and alameda county will pay $250,000 to people shot with leslie for ammunition -- lethal ammunition in june of 2020. the payment comes as part of a settlement where the city and county agreed to restrict the use of the less lethal ammunition bylaws forfeit -- by law enforcement.

abc news, washington. kristen: new details from san jose were a federal judge preliminarily denied a motion from elizabeth holmes to have her fraud convictions thrown out. the disgraced ceo was convicted in january on four felony counts of fraud and conspiracy. her lawyers told the judge they were going to file a motion for a new hearing based on new evidence. she is scheduled to be sentenced next month. larry: a study is raising concerns about water pollution at point race national seashore. cattle ranching has led to significant water quality pollution inside the national park. the study was commissioned by the turtle island restoration network, a nonprofit that works to protect marine species and their habitat. the release comes a week before the california coastal commission is set to vote on the new water quality strategies to address chronic pollution. kristen: it won't come as a big surprise. word that another flex alert has

it will be easy to spark a fire. here's a look at sunday. our first of the three hottest days. temperatures, 10 to 22 degrees warmer than average. records will begin in santa rosa with 107. we will be close in san jose with 98. redwood city, oakland, san francisco not quite going to make it thankfully. today, nice day. more clouds along the coast. more sunshine and heat inland. let's go down to the east bay where we have the hottest temperatures. we talked about hiking. we just told you about that story of some of those parts closing down. there's a reason. look at list rumpus. that's a nice area. a lot of people like to visit in the east bay. it's 98 there right now. the rest of us are in the 98 to 102 degree range. contrast that with where the breeze is comfortable in san

people will be signing up. >> i hope so. thank you. kristen: electric vehicles are being asked to avoid charging their cars during today's flex alert. how will these restrictions affect the state as california moves away from gas powered cars? here's leah melendez. reporter: very few ev owners knew not to charge their cars tonight during the peak time from 4:00 to 9:00. the request was made by the california independent system operator which monitors real-time grid conditions. >> i didn't hear it so i didn't know about it. reporter: once we told him, he immediately opted for charging his coat -- ev closer to midday. >> if i know there's an alert, i will do it. probably it will cause problems somewhere else. outages. reporter: 80% of ev owners charge their vehicles after work

when they get home. >> the result is that the grid will have to be larger. 20 to 30% larger just to meet that extra demand. reporter: that's the uc san diego school of global policy and strategy who says california will have to expand the electrical grid to accommodate the demand for ev's. people will also have to be more flexible with their charging times. >> we need to convince people to move their charging from nighttime to the middle of the day. that means for people who are back in the office, workplace charging. parking their car, having a device that can charge the car. reporter: there are more than 1.1 million ev's registered in the state. california controls the market with 39% of all ev's in the country. by 2035, all new cars healer -- here will be zero emission vehicles. how do ev owners become immune to the flex alerts years from now?
