all-time temperature records. it has triggered three flex alerts in a row and is prompting concerns of course about fire danger. ama: before we get to the details of x alerts and fire temperature, let's get to the temperatures. dan: abc 7 news meteorologist is live with that. sandhya: it is going to be in the excessive category this upcoming weekend. let me show you the high temperatures for today. yes, it got hot into the triple digits. mid 100s livermore, 100 in concord, 79 oakland, 90 san jose, 95 santa rosa. 66 in san francisco and 64 in half moon bay. turning up the heat this weekend, which is why the dangerous heatwave has pounded excessive heat warnings for all inland areas saturday morning through tuesday night. we have a heat advisory sunday morning route monday night for the bay shoreline and the marine coastal range. this is the kind of heat want to take seriously. saturday, temperatures rise into

the triple digits for the hottest spots. sunday, notice it is up to 100 five, fairfield 104, antioch, we go into monday and these numbers inland off the charts. it is extreme. 108 in concord, expecting 105 degrees were some of our inland hotspots. never leave kids or pets in the cars. these are just some tips. stay hydrated and cool. limit outdoor plans in the heat and check on relatives and neighbors because obviously, it gets a lot hotter. how much hotter is it going to get? for the upcoming weekend and beyond? yes, you heard beyond. i will be back with a closer look at those details, coming right up. ama: thank you. dan: breaking news, a wildfire is threatening structures near the town of willits. this snapshot from an alert wildfire camera shows the scene. this is in the pine mountain area east of highway 101. cal fire says the fire is about 25 acres right now but spreading fast. one northbound lane of highway 101 is shut down and drivers are

asked to avoid the area. there are currently no evacuation orders however, but we will keep tabs on that. the wildfire burning in southern california has grown to more than 5000 acres in just a day. the fire is burning near the grapevine section of interstate five in northern los angeles county. most lanes on the freeway are open. that is an improvement from yesterday, but evacuations remain in place at about 500 homes are threatened. seven firefighters who had to be hospitalized yesterday because of heat exhaustion, as we reported, have now all been released. they are doing ok. your cruise from oakland, hayward and fremont have traveled down south to help fight this fire. so far it is 12% contained. this extreme heat has local firefighters obviously on alert here. in the north bay, they are weighing new technology to better detect fire whether all across the area. abc reporter cornell bernard is live tonight with the story. cornell: hey, i've got to be

honest, it is toasty up here in petaluma today. but it is only going to get hearted into the holiday weekend. firefighters in santa rosa, wasting no time activating a new high-tech tool to help protect fire danger in fire weather. >> we do have the excessive heat running out for the vast majority of the county. cornell: firefighters get briefed about the labor day weekend heatwave that is packing enough lunch to break records. and increase fire danger. >> so the remote weather station is tracking everything from wind speed to temperature. cornell: firefighters choosing to deploy this new state-of-the-art remote weather station ahead of the extreme heat, capable of giving real-time fire weather information from the hills to the valley. the device is being installed in the fountain grove neighborhood, the scene of the 2017 tubs fire. >> we not expecting any wind, but when you look at temperatures that high, human it he that low, this tool actually allows us to track that in real time and see what our potential

is. how dry is it. cornell: across the region, cooling centers are opening like the community cultural center. a safe haven from the heat for those without ac. matt mcdonald and his ac repair crew have been slammed with calls from heated customers. >> we're checking refrigerator levels. this right here is the high-pressure and the low pressure. cornell: these guys were trying to compare an ac compressor. >> this weekend is going to be twice as busy as we have been all summer. it's kind of like the end of summer. all the air-conditioners are tired. so, yeah, we are 24/7 right now. we are going to work all the way through the holiday. yeah, so we will be busy. cornell: homemakers have checked out the forecast and he is leaving town. >> we get warmer than santa rosa, so, yeah, i think i'm going to head up to a cooler area this weekend. cornell: he's got the right idea, right?

this becomes cooling centers will open across sonoma county for those needing a little bit of relief and a sweet air conditioning. live in sonoma county, cornell barnard abc7news. dan: thank you very much. ama: bart is slowing trains because of high temperatures. trains on the san francisco line and the antioch line are delayed for 10 minutes. our flex alert has been called for tomorrow, just like yesterday and today, it runs from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m.. right now, we are at the peak of projected energy use. this graph shows how much demand there is on the grid. here's what you can do to help. if you have ac, set your thermostat to 78 degrees or higher if health allows. do not charge your electric car or use major appliances during those hours and be sure to turn off any unnecessary lights. so what impact does the flex alert have? can one person or household make that much of a difference? abc7news reporter put those questions to experts.

reporter: hot temperatures are not unusual for the bay area but climate scientists are concerned about how hot it is getting. livermore reached 130. >> would've been closer to 97 degrees fahrenheit in a preindustrial climate. we would expect the same type of day to be more like 104 degrees fahrenheit in a three degrees celsius warmed world at the end of the century in 2100. reporter: patrick is a climate scientist and visiting scholar. he says the impact of global warming on california is drier conditions, which increases the threat of wildfires. but it also increases demand for energy to make heat waves. >> that will be the highest we've seen this year. reporter: the supply of electricity does not spike at the same time as the spike in demand. the drought means california has less hydroelectric power and currently, california does not have the capacity to store huge amounts of solar energy. >> enough storage to store

solar energy from the middle of the day and move into the evening. reporter: that is why the flex alert is issued to prevent blackouts. >> the surprising thing is how much of a difference individual homes can make. reporter: he is the ceo of connect. it's a free service that notifies customers on how to reduce powers and customers can earn rewards for saving energy. they say the average home in california uses two kilowatts of power. 500 homes make up one megawatt. in august of 2020 when california was hit with blackouts amanda exceeded supply by 500 megawatts. he says households or big homes and apartments reduce energy use by 25% and it could prevent blackouts. >> 50,000 customers to reduce their energy use by a bid. and that is enough to make up for an entire powerplant not having to turn on. reporter: excessive heat is expected through labor day

dan: bart is cutting fares by 50% to celebrate its 50th anniversary. the fair will be reduced automatically when writers scan their clipper cards and you have to use one to get the discount. ridership yesterday was the highest of any weekday in the pandemic except the day of the warriors parade, which was an unusual day of course. more than 106 to 1000 people were on bart, that is 31% of pre-pandemic levels. taking a look at cars crossing the bay bridge toll plaza. as you can see, it is light out there moving along smartly tonight. owners of electric vehicles are being asked to avoid charging their cars during today's flex alert, which runs until 9 p.m.. how will these restrictions affect the state as california moves away from gas powered cars in favor of ev's? here is abc 7 news reporter leanne melendez. reporter: very few ev owners

>> what we need to do is convince people to move their charging from nighttime to the middle of the day and that means for people who are back in the office, that means workplace charging. parking your car, having a device there that can charge the car. reporter: according to governor newsom's office, they're more than 1.1 million ev's registered in the state california controls the market with 39% of all ev's in the country. by 2035, all new cars here will be zero emission vehicles, most pulling from the grid. so, how do ev owners become immune to the flex alerts years from now? scott is the ceo and founder of autonomy, an electric vehicle subscription app. he says expanding charging stations will help, because they are battery-powered and charge a vehicle in minutes. >> so when you go and charge at a d.c. fast charging station, you're not putting a load on the grid, so that will be by far the most responsible way as an ev owner to really lighten the load on the grid. reporter: the california

foundations of our republic. dan: president biden went on to say democracy is on the ballot. it phrased that he used often during his 2020 campaign. this was his second trip to pennsylvania in a week. former president trump has a rally planned there this weekend. ama: lawyers for former president trump and the justice department faced off in a florida courtroom today. trumps legal team is asking a federal judge to appoint a special master to review the documents the fbi seized from mar-a-lago. the special master would be an independent third party. no ruling was issued, but the judge has indicated she is seriously considering renting the request. this comes one day after the doj submitted its own filing, alleging donald trump and advisors may have tried to obstruct the investigation. >> this document shows it could not have just been chaos. there was some level of intentionality, the question is why was it done? and how long did it go on? ama: if a special master is

>> what's happening? >> nothing. there's a whole bunch of beer over here. dan: on this evening, july 27, police officer daisy confronts dust confronts three men including a popular gardener we will call matteo. he asked me not to use his real name. >> you don't have anything to say. you're just after drinking, you think that's funny? dan: then in spanish, he expands he and his friends like to drink beer after a long day of work and that they come to this area, because neighbors at has apartment complex complain when they are loud. they ask for id and the tension builds after officer and and arrives. 6'2", 250 pounds, he towers over matteo, who is just five feet tall, 130 pounds. >> hey, sit down. >> i told you to sit down. >> i know, i know.

dan: it appears matteo is trying to cooperate but he has difficulty finding his id without standing up to reach into his pockets. >> take out your id. >> i know, i have to take it out. >> sit-down. sit-down. >> ok. >> hey, hey. >> stop. dan: you can see from his bodycam that officer nail forces matteo to the ground over beer bottles, punches him in the nose, and pushes his face into the rough pavement. and it turns out he had a broken nose and concussion. >> right. i have an active case right now, where almost exactly this thing happened and the guy is dead. dan: roger clark is a nationally recognized police practices expert, who has testified in more than 1300 cases. >> i did not do anything. >> i told you to sit down, you did not sit-down. dan: he says the officer used

excessive force and overreacted to a relatively minor infraction. an open container of beer. >> sounds to me like a chip on her shoulder. she did not like the response she was getting and she came on strong. and it just goes downhill from there. dan: after the officers load matteo into a patrol car. >> get in the car. dan: they discuss what happened with paramedics. >> uncooperative. so we took him down to the ground. dan: their colleagues. >> bad day. dan: and their supervisors. >> ok. dan: listen to what a sergeant says as he walks away from officer nail. >> gave me a great expanse with

use of force. dan: i wanted to ask police chief david spiller about officer nails record on use of force and about this incident, but he declined my request for an interview. i spoke with his media officer by phone. >> we are conducting immediate, thorough, internal investigation. these actions do not represent the san raphael police department. and if any of these allocations to become sustained, action will be dealt with swiftly. dan: he says both officers remain on active duty. another key question, more than 20 minutes after the altercation, the officer comes up with a new detail. >> in a headlock. dan: later, he wrote in his police report that matteo breached his right arm around the back of my neck and started to squeeze in an attempt to put me in a headlock, adding that he had to swing his right hand at my right head striking me on my left side and back of my head.

that did not happen according to matteo's defense attorney, carles. >> there was no striking of the officer. there was no headlock. dan: but the report convinced the marin county district attorney to file a felony resisting charge along with three is to minister to the da file those charges and said the preliminary hearing date without viewing the bodycam video's. >> almost immediately upon viewing the actual evidence and the videos, the district attorney's office very ethically , in my mind, did the exact right thing. and they did what they could do, which is dismiss the case. dan: several of matteo's customers came to show their support at the hearing this past friday. one more thing bothers his attorney. the 20 minutes after he injured matteo, officer nail walked to the patrol car, snaps a picture, and argues with him. >> you didn't sit down, you try to pull away from us and you grabbed me.

dan: a sergeant already assigned other officers to take evidence photographs. he wonders if this picture was some sort of trophy. >> it is absolutely critical that law enforcement and the criminal justice system treat everyone the same. either everyone matters or no one matters. and law enforcement treated my client in this case like he did not matter. dan: i reached the officer by comment and she declined to comment. i reached out to the union and have not heard back. i am posting the complete bodycam video through the takedown at abc7news.com and on my twitter account. you can watch it all right there in real time. dan: there will be a lot more on this coming. thank you very much. sandhya: our dangerously hot heat wave started today.
