♪ >> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. >> preparations underway across the bay area as we get ready for a weekend heatwave that will bring potentially dangerous temperatures. some areas already cracking triple digits today. good evening. i am dan ashley. ama: i am ama daetz. coverage begins with sandhya patel. sandhya: we are talking about sweltering heat this upcoming weekend. we are going to start to see that heat building not just over the central valley, but shifting westward. as the dangerous heatwave develops, you're really going to feel it in inland communities. inland areas and the hills going under an excessive heat warning. all the areas shaded in orange under a heat advisory 11:00 a.m.

sunday until sunday night. that is the bay shoreline and marin coastal range. it will carry over into early next week. this saturday, you start to see some 90's and 100's. on monday, we are talking by extreme heat when it is 108 degrees in concord. fire danger will be increasing not just tomorrow, going into the high category, but this upcoming weekend. i will be back. dan? dan: in the east bay, cities are seeing triple digit temperatures just as the high school football season kicks off. tonight in pleasant hill, players and families were battling the heat at a freshman game between foothill and college park high schools. j.r. stone was there and has the story. j.r.: woah, nellie! football is back. if you are just watching this

high school football game at home, you did not see the tents in the crowd, umbrellas being held or water being served up, you would not realize it was 100 degrees at this game. >> 105 in pleasanton. j.r.: maybe 100 in pleasant hill is a breeze for the out of town football high school freshman team. certainly not a problem for grandma. >> i am a grandparent of number 55 on the foothill high/ pleasanton team. j.r.: not a problem as long as the water is served up, downed and sprayed. >> we use this at disneyland when it gets hot. it is a fan. you just kind of spray. >> that's not normal, not normal. we are enjoying it. j.r.: some folks did not feel comfortable watching the game outside in these triple digit temperatures. those folks opted to go inside their car, where it is air-conditioned. >> very cool.

wildfires, but it also increases the demand for energy during heat waves. >> we are likely to be above 40,000 megawatts, the highest we have seen this year. anser: the supply about atrocity does not spike at the same time as the spike in demand. california has less hydroelectric power. california does not have the capacity to store huge amounts of solar energy. >> enough storage to store solar energy from the middle of the day and kind of move it to the evening. anser: that's why flex alert is issued, to conserve power and prevent blackouts. >> the surprising thing is how much of a difference individual homes can make. anser: the ceo of home connect, a free service that notifies customers on how to reduce power. he says the average home in california uses two kilowatts of power. 500 homes make up one megawatt. in august of 2020, when california was hit with blackouts, demand exceeded supply by just 500 megawatts.

new covid-19 vaccine boosters right after labor day. . the cdc has signed off on the redesign shots meant to protect against omicron variants. the first doses of pfizer's covid-19 booster have already been shipped across the country. more than 100,000 doses were sent as soon as the fda authorized the updated is just. the new vaccine -- updated the new boosters. the new vaccine [audio drop] >> is not to have to give lots of vaccines each year, is to hopefully have this be the vaccine that holds us for as much of this or the entire season, if it can. ama: if you are fully vaccinated, you would be eligible for the new booster two months after your most recent shut. pfizer biontech expects to deliver 3 million doses by tuesday, which is authorized for people 12 and older. moderna's vaccine has been authorized for people 18 and older. dan: education is a key part of building a better bay area.

we are getting a better look at the challenges we face going forward after the pandemic. new data shows two decades of learning improvements by kids have been wiped away in the span of just two years. tim johns spoke with experts and parents about their own experiences and breaks down those numbers. tim: it is often called the nation's report card. the national center for education statistics releases data from an assessment given to nearly 15,000 kids twice a year. it shows how american students are performing in key subject areas. on thursday, new numbers reveal that since the start of the pandemic, the country has received a failing grade. >> maybe two grades below level, which is tragic in and of itself . tim: from the start of 2020 through the winter of 2022, the covid pandemic and ensuing lockdowns resulted in a learning loss that erased decades of progress. in math and reading,

nine-year-old students were knocked back to levels not seen since the 1990's. the trend has caused alarm among both educators and parents. >> it>> was easy for people who were not with them each day to say the kids are doing fine, they are resilient, they will get through this. parents who were at home were saying the kids are actually not all right. tim: while the learning losses were broad-based across nearlyfr optiaty impacted. >> i think to contextualize that, i think part of that is because so many of our students of color in the state were already in schools that were under resourced, under invested in, and then you add a pandemic on top of that. tim: since returning to in person learning, parents and teachers have been working overtime trying to catch students up. many say they still worry about the long-term effects. >> these academic numbers i feel are actually just the tip of the iceberg, they are not even addressing the social/emotional
