tomorrow, we are going to push the heat deeper into the seven-day forecast than yesterday. here is the latest from the national weather service. they have taken the coast and san francisco out of the heat advisory. the marine layer is going to be just tall enough to reach those neighborhoods, but nowhere else. you can see the marin coastal range, san francisco bay temperatures around 103. notice the starts sunday. this one ends at 8:00 monday. for the real heat, the dangerous searing heat, this also starts sunday at 11:00 and go through at least tuesday at 8:00 p.m. for most of us except solano county which goes to wednesday. i am seeing signs that heat is going to hang around the north bay and inland east bay. we will have to keep an eye on and see if they are extended also. temperatures 10 degrees cooler than yesterday. 60's along the coast, 70's along the bay.

80's and 90's inland. it is still warm in some areas, but this is going to be your best evening for outdoor activity. head out, it is a flex alert. you don't want to use electricity at home, so head out. temperatures in the 60's, 70's and 80's, dropping to the 60's. we will look at the heat next week coming up. kristen: breaking news out of siskiyou county. the city of lee is under evacuation after a fast-moving wildfire broke out. all 2600 residents are being forced to leave. the fire has exploded to 900 acres pretty quickly with no containment at all. in this video come uc the large plume of smoke. the fire started in a lumber mill in weed. it is being called the mill fire. we will bring you updates. larry: a flex alert took effect for the third day in a row. here's what you need to do during a flex alert. try not to use too much power

from 4:00 until 9:00 p.m.. set your thermostat to 70 degrees or higher. do not charge your electric car or use major appliances. turn off any unnecessary lights. kristen: when the weather gets this hot, heat exhaustion can come on quickly. doctors say they are taking the heatwave seriously and you should too. contra costa county public -- tells us why. >> many days in triple digits, less cooling at night, and it is lasting a long time. it is over a holiday weekend. we are particularly concerned that more vulnerable people will suffer, particularly as this goes on day after day. kristen: santa clara county health officer dr. sarah cody has tips to keep us safe. >> remember to look after those who are most vulnerable. young children, elderly, people

with chronic conditions. it is important they stay in places that are as cool as possible. there are cooling centers that are open across the county. it is also important to stay hydrated. kristen: that means drink lots of water, more than you usually would, and start now. avoid outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day. we have a list of cooling centers across the bay area at abc7news.com. larry: walnut creek and concord to shut down spaces including lime ridge, shale ridge and >> lonnie ridge. the open spaces are to reopen tuesday when the heat warning will likely be lifted. kristen: in the wine country, concern about the extreme heat. larry: this has moved up the time line on harvest, leaving growers working hard to protect grapes on the vine.

larry: many people are turning to swimming pools in some hotspots. -- is live at lark swim center in walnut creek. i thought you were going to die then. -- dive in. >> the average high here in walnut creek is in the 80's. it is already 97 degrees and it will stay hot through the weekend. the swim staff here has been beefed up in anticipation of a busy weekend. it is hot in walnut creek. one way took will off, swimming at clark swim center. >> it is nice in the pool. hi 70's. the pool water is nice. >> labor day weekend is traditionally the last big weekend of recreational swim. but the excessive heat, they have scheduled extra staff despite the ongoing lifeguard shortage impacting public pools across the country.

>> we have condensed the areas available for public swimming, which has allowed us to increase our staffing to get our staff more breaks and monitor some spaces that will be opening up as cooling areas. we have a classroom that is fairly air-conditioned. we anticipate people need to get out of the hot and sit there. >> claire shields wanted to cool off and beat the crowds while she gets in lapse. >> it is going to be super busy. this pool gets populated from berkeley, oakland, san francisco , this is a great pool. >> if public pools are crowded, there are private pools for rent. >> this weekend, we were inundated with requests. >> amy sable has her pool on offer for $65 an hour. it is like airbnb for swimming pools. kitchen, guesthouse, shower, music, she says there has been huge demand all summer, especially for this weekend.

shade this weekend because it is going to be hot. let's bring in mike nicco with a look at triple digit forecasts. mike: i was going to forecast a lot of traffic jams also come alike on 92. trying to get to the beaches. at stinson beach and bodega bay, a lot of people will be fleeing to those areas because of those are the few areas that will be really comfortable this weekend. let's look at what is going on. 66 in san francisco. 68 oakland. san jose 81 peers santa cruz 74. that is as nice as it isatvexpd. on aanul of us hado with it today. it will expand and strengthen tomorrow, pushing us into the high risk for heat illness and elevated fire danger. no fire weather watch. no red flag warning. but still, this hot and this drive, fires can start easy.

have poor air quality. los gatos in the 90's. the mid to upper 60's along the coast. upper 70's downtown in south san francisco. low 70's north bay coast. 89 petaluma. 90's and 100 for the north bay valleys. low to mid 80's for the ease bayshore and our other area of possible poor air quality is our inland east bay neighborhoods. 97 to nearly 101 degrees. let's talk about monday, one of our hottest days. look at the 80's and 90's around the bay. only the coast in san francisco safe from the extreme heat. 110 is possible. 113 in fairfield. tuesday we may lose a degree or two but it is still exceptionally hot. wednesday, still holding onto 100s in the north bay and also inland east bay. we are giving up tomorrow for hotter temperatures wednesday and thursday. that is why tomorrow is no longer in those heat advisories

kristen: labor day is here. america's employers added 315,000 jobs in august, exceeding expectations, but below to life us report when unemployment surged by 526,000 jobs. the unemployment rate rose slightly, up from 3.5% in july. that was the lowest in half century. marty wash -- marty walsh told abc 7 that america's workforce is stronger than ever. >> the president has passed major legislation that will

expand manufacturing in the united states. it expands opportunities for infrastructure which will help us to more growth in cities and towns across america the inflation reduction act is another bill that is very important. i see our economy strong moving forward. kristen: walsh touted a new gallup poll which shows approval for labor unions at 71%, the highest since 1965. larry: if you are looking to get out of town, wait before you get into your car. i want to show you a little picture of interstate 80 from our camera in emeryville. as you can see, it is jammed up. this is notoriously the most crowded local freeway during a holiday weekend, along with 580. a survey by aaa says 82% of those planning to travel this weekend will do so by car. there's good news regarding gas prices, they are coming down. yes buddies says prices nationwide are down about 20% from earlier this summer. shaping up to be a busy labor

[laughter] mike: i will bet management is working on that right now. some good news come our heatwave is not going to be as robust tomorrow. the most dangerous heat is going to be pushed off until at least sunday. that means it is also going to linger until wednesday. we have got the bayshore in the marin range, coastal range under the heat advisory. 95 to 103. the marathon of heat could be longer inland. up to tuesday, possibly wednesday. i would not be surprised if everyone is not extended until wednesday. almost the entire state is under some kind of heat watch or warning. temperatures near 90 in tahoe. l.a., fresno, sacramento, well into the 100s. santa cruz, 86. the coast will be 64 tomorrow.

sunday is getting warmer. it will be the warmest monday. 67 at ocean beach. mid-elsewhere along the coast. my seven day forecast of this marathon heatwave through at least wednesday. kristen: firefighters across the bay area preparing for the heat. it's not just about potential fire. larry: ryan curry went to the fremont fire department to see their plans. >> it is shaping up to be a busy weekend for firefighters in the bay area. fremont fire says it will be all hands on deck. >> right now, we have two cruise training at our facility. they are practicing pumping techniques, firefighting techniques for this weekend. >> battalion chief gary ashley says his crews need special gear to be ready. >> these are the pants we wear. this is a helmet. this is a structured code. the big difference for wildland firefighting, you wear lighter

material. you wear a lighter helmet. it is always equipped with a heat shield. >> the equipment for fighting fires is one thing, but ashley says they need special equipment to keep them safe from the weather. >> it is mandatory week carry a 10 shelter, specifically used in case they are overrun by fire. they can pull out the 10 shelter. new to this is a hydration pack that carries two liters of water. personnel can keep on their back at all times. >> already friday morning, fremont fire station seven had numerous calls. they are expecting more. it is not just the potential for fire, they have to be prepared for heat related illness. >> every apparatus in the city is staffed with a paramedic. they are trained to treat those kind of symptoms. >> ashley has been working for fremont fire for over 20 years and says it is, to see hot days, but temperatures this high is something they are seeing more of. >> the last five fire seasons

have been the most intense of my career. a lot of that can be contributed to climate change. >> regardless of how hot, ashley says his team is ready for the weekend. in fremont, ryan curry. larry: pourer neighborhoods tend to suffer more during heatwave stand wealthier ones. dan ashley is here with details. >> it is interesting. as part of our efforts to build a better bay area, we are looking at inequity. keeping cool isn't just about air conditioning. it is about something as simple as trees and shade. there's a big disparity when it comes to trees in poorer neighborhoods. >> it may be the same sun, but the surface temperature it triggers during a heat wave could very dramatically neighborhood by neighborhood. the big reason for the difference is shade and the canopy of trees that lined some sidewalks, but not others. >> there is a clear pattern where you can see some

neighborhoods, the richer and whiter ones, have beautiful trees. other neighborhoods, there's barely any. >> national geographic environmental reporter alejandra baroda spent nearly two years studying the issue. while she focused on southern california, a quick survey by the abc7news data team turned up similar divides in the bay area where tree canopy density ranged from barely 5% in neighborhoods with average incomes of $40,000 or less, to nearly triple that where people averaged $120,000 and up. the problem is not limited to one or two neighborhoods. you can pretty much hit the road in any part of the area and find similar differences. often the dividing line is as clear as a freeway. in oakland, we started in a diverse, less white neighborhood, then watched as sparse tree cover steadily gave way to lush, green yards as we passed under interstate 580

towards whiter neighborhoods in the oakland hills. that is where he launched drone view seven. side-by-side, the disparity is obvious. in central san jose, you see the same patterns in reverse as you pass from older trees on the west into less affluent neighborhoods like this street on the right. or, you could cruise leaf university avenue in palo alto, also passed 101 into the sparser blocks of east palo alto. researchers like dr. laura feinstein say when it comes to trees, the roots of disparity stretch back decades. >> there are a lot of factors at play. part of it was banks strategically decided not to h t families. ey would only lend mortgages to peoplealthier areas zoned for single-family homes typically attracted more city

services like sidewalks and trees.fast forward to now, that disparity becomes more than a matter of aesthetic. experts say shade and water evaporation from trees can lower surrounding air temperatures by six degrees or more. it may seem obvious that shade from a tree canopy will keep ground temperatures cool, but as climate change continues to affect the bay area, the stakes will only get higher. in certain cases, that shade could be the difference between life and death. >> people often died during heat waves. not young, healthy people, but elderly people and disabled people. we can see just an extra degree of temperature during a heatwave increases mortality by 2% to 3%. >> nonprofits like and the estuary institute produced detailed roadmap -- roadmaps for greening projects. efforts likely to branch out in coming years as the bay area seeks to protect historically

temperature and there was a crack in the vent valve in the inner tank. engineers have repaired the crack and determined to the center in the engine was not working properly. >> the team has done a fantastic job getting us out of launch attempt number one, preparing the issues and getting us into a configuration to seed. >> nasa is using a space launch system rocket to send the space capsule on a 37 day mission to orbit the moon. it is all a part of nasa's artemis program which aims to establish human presence on the moon by the end of this decade. >> we are going back to the moon. >> the -- could be one of the astronauts on board. >> our long-term, big goal is going to mars. exploring spaces we have never been before. landing on the south pole of the moon is going to test the teams that will enable that future mission. >> this mission will fly a total 1.3 million miles.

if tomorrow's launch is called off for any reason, the next attempt will be monday. kristen: this morning on our streaming show, we spoke with nasa astronaut jessica near about the mission and what they hope to get out of the unmanned trip. >> one of the important elements we are testing is the heatshield. that is the bottom of the capsule that protects the capsule when it reenters the atmosphere and protects all the astronauts inside. a really important part from our standpoint. this mission is without crewmembers. the next one will have crewmembers. we need to get this first one correct. kristen: the moon mission will eventually set up a training ground for further missions to mars. tomorrow's launch could happen as early as 11:17 our time. larry: the international space station still going strong. astronauts headed outside the station for a spacewalk.
