at jack in the box. >> from abc7, live, breaking news. dan: we have breaking news out of siskiyou county, a fast-moving fire that has a better 100 acres. it has forced an evacuation of the city of weed. the mayor says multiple homes have burned. residents are being told to leave immediately. we is 70 miles north of redding, right off of i-5 as you head towards the oregon border. in the video you see the large plume of smoke from wildfire cameras. the fire started at a lumber mill, thus the name of the fire, it is being called the mill fire. we will bring the latest updates as soon as they come in. thank you for joining us, i am dan ashley.

ama: and i am ama daetz. this is the same concern in the bay area as we experience excessive heat. we have team coverage on the impact this heat can have on your health. dan: we begin with meteorologist sandhya patel who is on the roof of the building, with the latest on the conditions right now. sandhya: we have some changes to talk about, extreme heat is still happening, but will begin later and it will still last longer. let me show you the excessive heat warning. it covers all inland areas from 11 a.m. sunday until 8 p.m. tuesday, up to 100 degrees expected. solano county until 8:00 p.m. wednesday. the heat advisory no longer covers the coast of san francisco, but it still includes the bay shoreline and parts of the coastal range highs up to eight degrees. it will be hard enough to cross high to very high heat risk illness. keep that in mind. temperatures rising and so will

franciscans walk up to a blanket of fog, the reality is that extreme heat events are increasing in the city. rather than stand on the sideline, city officials are creating a heat map to determine which neighborhoods are most vulnerable to the impact of extreme heat. abc7 news reporter lyanne melendez has more on the information that is vital to preparing for climate change. lyanne: some like it hot, better health implications of increasing temperatures are of concern to a city with so-called urban heat islands. >> lots of concrete and not a lot of trees. the heat can go up considerably. >> there are a large number of services, coupled with the lack of tree cover and shade. lyanne: because temperatures will be higher this weekend, volunteers are mapping the city to discover which neighborhoods get hardest during the heat wave. using car mounted sensors,

volunteers began collecting data beginning at 6:00 a.m., then 3:00 p.m., and 7:00 at night. >> being able to capture the heat and humidity also helps us understand how long the heat is persisting in certain pockets of our city. lyanne: think of it as a preemptive strike. if neighbors are told their street is harder than other places in the city and there is a lot of concrete and few green spaces, there are a few things the city can do to make things cooler. parks and more trees help with urban cooling. that a no-brainer. so, san francisco can, for example, reconfigure sidewalks to make room for more trees. in los angeles, painting the pavement in a light-colored sealant to reflect the heat has become popular in neighborhoods with little green spaces. in new york, reflective roofs are keeping the buildings from trapping heat, making things much cooler.

san francisco may not be as hard as those two cities, but knowing that our climate is undergoing changes, the idea is to start working now on making it a heat -proof city. in san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc7 news. ama: ama: the combination of hot weather and holiday weekend is expected to have many people flock into cooler parts of the bay area to beat that heat. the hospital emergency room near one of the most popular spots says it is staffed up and ready to care for patients. reporter zach fuentes talked about easy ways to stay out of the er altogether. zach: hot weather and long weekends are usually what it takes to paint this picture of beaches. crowds of people hoping to escape from hot temperatures where they live. historically this emergency room ends up having to care for many of those tourists. >> this weekend we staffed up. we added additional staff to the

emergency department and on top of that, we have staff who are on call. zach: tammy green is the manager of the emergency department. they refer to the time between memorial day and labor day as a 100 deadliest days. >> that is when incidents of drunk drivings, unfortunately, and fatalities related to them, increases. zach: on topzach: of that, the current heat wave has added to their concerns. >> even more people who, may be before this, were not considering traveling towards the ocean and cooler areas. so we are going to have more people out on the road. zach: although the beach might be the ideal place to find relief, climate experts say you may want to postpone outdoor activities in or near santa cruz county. >> locations up in the hills stay hot overnight, so if you go up for camping or hiking and if you go out in the early morning, it is still going to be hot and dry, and it is going to be a

stress on your body. zach: green says, while older people are more prone to heat sickness, no one should underestimate the heat. >> we have had young people who went out and enjoyed the day out on the boardwalk and found themselves feeling dehydrated, dizzy, nauseated and needing to come to the emergency department. zach: she highlights important signs to avoid getting to that point and finding yourself here. >> when getting to the point where you start to feel off balance, that is your buddy saying you need to hydrate. hydrate adequately when on the water. zach: zach fuentes, abc7 news. dan: dozens of parks and recreation areas will be closed on sunday and monday because of this extreme heat. the east bay regional parks district says 40 of its parks in the dryer wildfire-prone will be off-limits. that includes tilden, wildcat canyon, redwood and simply. however, the parks closer to the shoreline will be open, as well

as six swimming facilities. yesterday concorde and walnut creek officials announced some ridges are closed until tuesday. ama: there is a lot of concern in wine country about the extreme heat coming, so much so that it has moved up the timeline on harvest. . that has left growers scrambling to protect groups still on the vine. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard is in the napa valley with details. cornell: brooks is in the business of growing grapes, not reasons. >> when we avoid the clusters, because as you can see, they are shriveled. cornell: but these weekends scorching temperatures may change the game. >> the clusters that are exposed to just get cooked. cornell: he is the chief winemaker at a winery in st. helena, where they have seen hot weather,, but rarely do they see a stretch of triple digits like what is now in the forecast. >> i am getting a lot of calls from growers, they want to put their groups on the schedule for next week and everyone is

concerned. cornell: the winery lab is testing groups daily for sugar content, acid, and tartness. meantime, there is a race to remove the grapes before the epic heat sets in. >>. >> we are just going full bore. >> yesterday we got to about 101 and cornell: change. this oakfield ranch winemaker takes us to the place where she is most concerned about, red grapes which bear the brunt of the hot afternoon sun. >> the flavor components that we are looking for can get degraded by super high temperatures. cornell: vines at risk are being wrapped in cloth. >> even though it looks 10 and measly, it does a tremendous amount of work to protect the vines. cornell: these grapes are keeping their cool. >> the east temperatures just hit 95 degrees. these mistress have just kicked on, protecting the vines and keeping the grapes nice and cool

ama: another bay area senior has passed away and assisted living facility run by atria. this comes days after a 93-year-old woman died at the san mateo center after being given dishwashing liquid instead of juice. reporter luz pena spoke to the son of the men who died, and he says his father's death is very similar to this case. lucas: it happened again.

a 93-year-old died after being dishwashing liquid instead of drinking juice at this san mateo atria assisted living facility. another family is coming forward. this time it happened at a facility in walnut creek. the resident was a 94-year-old. facility said he appeared to suffer a negative reaction on august 23 and died on wednesday. >> their primary job of an assisted care facility is to enhance the lives of senior citizens. now we have altria, who has entered two lives in -- who has entered two lives in a week. luz: this attorney is not involved in either case, but specializes in elder abuse cases. he is calling on the state to intervene. >> what they have done so far is dark responsibility. the onus falls on the state to do something. luz: atria sent as a statement saying in part, quote, "at this time we believe it was likely

food-related. we are completing our internal investigation and we await the official cause of death. the staff members involved have been suspended in the meantime. ." we spoke to the sun on the phone, who says a worker at the atria facility showed him the cleaning fluid they said he drank. later on atria's management said the resident ate hot cheaters and denied the dishwashing fluid allegations. the son says records show his father had burns to his stomach and esophagus. . we dug into the records of the walnut creek facilities. california's social service department has investigated at least six complaints against the facility. some citing the facility feeling to provide adequate staffing to meet resident,'s needs and residents sustaining an injury while in care. mccarthy says the state typically releases a finding three days after an incident. it has been a week after the

first death. will they say is that we are investigating. >> what they can do is suspend licenses. they have the ability to put someone out of business. luz: luz pena, abc7 news. dan: a man accused of shooting two people in san jose was arrested this morning near the mexico border. it happened at 10:30 last night. both people suffered one gunshot wound. a female victim was dead at the scene, and a male victim is believed to be in critical condition. c.h.p. was able to look at the suspect and his vehicle on i-5, headed toward tijuana mexico. >> the california highway patrol can go across counties and everything else. they are the ones that found him and detained him at the border. you can run, we will find you, we will bring you back. dan: the identity of the suspect and the victims has yet to be released. authorities believe the victims knew the suspect. this is the city of san jose's 27th homicide this year.

ama: police in lafayette are searching for a man who grabbed a 14-year-old near a middle school this morning. it happened around 8:00 right after the girl was dropped off near the school. she told police that as she was walking, the man grabbed her by the shoulder and held on when she tried to break free. she was finally able to run to the school and tell authorities and police. dan: and then there is this -- oakland police asking for the public's help to identify this man. . they say he is wanted in connection with an attempted rape and robbery sunday, it happened just after 9:30 in the morning on parker avenue. police say the victim was walking down the street when a man armed with a can, approached from behind, tackled the victim and began sexually assaulting the. the victim screamed for help and the man ran away, but he stole the victim's cell phone. ama: ama: let's take a live look at side from our camera at the beach in santa cruz, a nice place to be. some people are heading there for relief from the hot weather. we will check back in with abc7

we will fast-forward because the numbers go up a few degrees but by sunday we are watching bid 100 for places like concord, upper 100s by liberty. some computer models want to surpass the 110-degree mark. it will be hard and tuesday it will still be hard, after 108 degrees in antioch and livermore. statewide we have excessive heat warnings for most of california, heat advisories for parts of california and orange and an. excessive heat watch as well so fire danger will be elevated, although we don't have the winds coming, notice it goes from the moderate to high category tomorrow afternoon. that continues through next week. notice the haze in the air over san francisco, air quality beginning to decline. tomorrow is a spare the air day. unhealthy air is expected, so if you can, limit your driving tomorrow.
