of 2022. it looks like this will extend well past labor day. fog free conditions. could be a few patches by half moon bay. today, the coolest day by far out of the next seven. 58 in san rafael. we have dangerous heat on the way starting tomorrow. 8:00 -- 11:00 through 8:00 tuesday. a heat advisory until monday night for the bayshore and san francisco. right now, it is comfortable. noon. time, 70's and. 80's upper 60's for the coast. liz: governor newsom has declared a state of emergency as the mill fire explodes in size in siskiyou county. it is 0% contained and has

burned 3900 acres. a mandatory evacuation for all residents in the town of weed, 70 miles north of reading, heading toward the oregon border on i-5. >> there is approximately 200 homes in the line of the fire's direction. liz: the fire was first reported i do lumber mill before 1:00 in the afternoon on friday. it quickly spread to dry vegetation nearby. another fire, the mountain fire is burning a few miles from the mill fire in weed. you can see them on our wildfire tracker on abc7news.com. the fire has doubled in size. it has burned 1400 acres and is 0% contained. here in the bay area, we are entering the fourth consecutive day of a flex alert. from 4:00 to 9:00, all

californians are being asked to conserve energy. we could be seeing higher numbers this afternoon. this graph shows how much demand there is on the grid at any given time. here is what you can do to help during peak hours. set your thermostat to 78 degrees or higher if your health allows. do not charge your electric car or use major appliances during those hours and turn off any unnecessary lights. several events are still happening this weekend. one of them starting today. the scottish highland gathering and games in the east bay. tim johns got a preview of the event and shows us how organizers will balance having fun with heat related concerns. ♪ >> if you listen closely, you might hear a familiar sound making its way back to the alameda county fairgrounds. >> all things scottish. >> for the 150 six time, the

club of san francisco will be hosting its annual scottish highlands gathering and games. friday night they held a fundraiser to kick off the weekend. the president of the club says the event is one of the largest of its kind in the u.s. and is a way for scottish people to share culture with the rest of the bay area. >> never giving up pride in our country and our ways of life and the ways of dress. >> with temperatures expected to soar this weekend, heat will be of concern. several events are outdoors and physically demanding. >> we will have cooling tents, misters throughout the fairground, five buildings that are air-conditioned. >> the hot weather in consideration for several participants. bagpiper christopher explains extreme heat can have an effect

themselves feeling dehydrated, dizzy, nauseated and needing to come to the emergency department. liz: there are important signs to look out for to avoid heat related illness, including dizziness and nausea. the city of oakland is working to remove the toxic red tide from lake merritt before the heat makes the algae bloom even worse. focus friday was on the surface of the lake and that work will continue. crews spent the last three days removing 1000 pounds of dead fish from the shoreline. you can check temperatures on the abc 7 bay area streaming tv app. you can download that on roku, apple tv, amazon fire and google tv. new developments into the investigation of a fatal shooting of a 23-month-old in oakland. chp release these photos of two cars they believed were involved in the freeway shooting that killed jasper on the 880 last november.

monday's liftoff had to be scrubbed because of an engine issue. a change in fueling seems to have changed the problem. >> they have looked at it from gizzard to gizzard. the only thing that will get in the way if it does is summer time in florida, rain storms, lightning storms. liz: on abc 7 at 7:00 this morning i got the chance to talk more about the historic artemis mission with a nasa astronaut. jessica: this mission is a big milestone because it is starting the full artemis missions. it is our test flight of the space rocket and the orion capsule with all the systems integrated and it will go all the way around the moon. even further than the apollo missions went. it will go 40,000 miles past the moon and come 60 miles from the surface of the moon and then come back.

it will be 42 days. we are testing the heatshield. that is the bottom of the capsule that protects the capsule when it reenters the atmosphere and protects all the astronauts inside. this mission is without crewmembers. the very next one will have crewmembers so we need to get the first one correct. liz: that was jessica. lisa, the conditions have to be just perfect, and with florida, you never really know what the weather. lisa: summer thunderstorms always around there. back home, warmer temperatures. today is the best day at of the next seven as the heat builds and stays with us for the week ahead. liz: also ahead, this week's extreme heat has north bay winemakers worried. xavier becerra to harvest the grapes. covid booster shots are getting an update.

liz: welcome back. reaction is pouring in after serena williams played what is likely her last professional tennis match. she was eliminated from the u.s. open in the third round. among those praising the 40-year-old athlete, former first lady michelle obama. she wrote on twitter, congrats on an amazing career, serena williams. how lucky we were to watch a young girl from compton grow up to become one of the greatest athletes of all time. larry beil will have more on williams' last match, later on in sports. bay area health officials are welcoming the approval of the updated vaccine. abc 7 news reporter dustin dorsey explains when residents

can get the latest vaccine. >> enter the omicron booster. the cdc's director recommended the vast majority of americans received the updated vaccine. >> the virus continues to change and adapt and so must we. we have all changed and adapted our behavior and we welcome this updated vaccine that is updated to adapt to what is circulating now. >> moderna and pfizer adjusted the formula to address the omicron variant and subvariants. anyone 18 and older with their primary series can receive the moderna shot while anyone 12 and up with the primary series can get the new pfizer booster. the original covid-19 boosters will no longer be given out to these age groups. only a pfizer booster remains for children ages five to 12. >> the county's owned

export damage. liz: santa clara county and state ag officials are sounding the alarm, launching emergency action to kill non-native fruit flies found in san jose. abc 7 news has the details. >> small flies significant impact. the state is stepping in and taking emergency action to help santa clara county stop oriental fruit flies from multiplying. the species is native to asia. they want to prevent a widespread infestation that could potentially impact california's $50 billion ag industry. >> we provide the road with fruit and vegetables. do not ship your infestation. >> california's department of

food and agriculture says the value of crops threatened by the fruit fly in 2020 was $19.3 billion. county agricultural commissioner -- among the list of valuable crops, avocados, apples, citrus fruits. in october, a large portion of the county was under a fruit quarantine after nine tropical flies were found. >> we successfully eradicated the whole infestation. we are finding more this year. there is obviously a pathway because this insect does not occur in the united states. >> he said it is not a good thing we are seeing them again so soon. officials will target two sites in san jose where two male oriental fruit flies were found last month. there will be an organic pesticide on trees and surfaces. the male fruit flies eat it and

will get a sea breeze but still well into the 90's. by noon time, we are flirting with 90. coast, upper 60's and breezy. mid 70's downtown. we will talk about how hot it will get sunday. liz: thank you. in the north bay members of the community are coming forward and asking for justice after the bloody police takedown of a gardener. some of the incident pictures are disturbing. [chanting] liz: justice for matteo is what they are saying. they speak out against the video showing police officers violently arresting the man over an open container of beer. we have video online if you want to see the bodycam video.

and investigation you will see only on abc 7 news. the video shows san rafael police approach a man with an open beer. they wind up taking him down, beating him and charging him with felony resisting arrest. the officers have been placed on paid administrative leave. the victim has been cleared of all charges but is considering a lawsuit. we will try to get you the video. it is on abc7news.com. another senior pastor way i did atria facility -- another senior past away at an atria facility. she was given dishwasher liquid rather than juice. >> it happened again days after 93-year-old trudy maxwell died after being served dishwashing liquid instead of drinking juice at this san mateo atria

facility, another family is coming forward. this time the incident took place at the atria facility in walnut creek. the resident was 94-year-old constantine canoun. he appeared to suffer a negative reaction on august 23. he died on wednesday. >> the primary job of an assisted care facility is to enhance the lives of senior citizens. now we have atria that has ended two lives. >> an attorney is not involved in either case but specializes in elder abuse cases. he is calling on the state to intervene. >> what they have done is duck responsibility. >> regarding the death of constantine canoun, atria sent a statement saying in part, at this time we believe it was likely food related. we are completing our internal investigation and await the official cause of death.

the staff members involved have been suspended. we spoke to canoun's son who said the worker at the facility showed the cleaning fluid they said he drank. someone said he ate hot chee tos. medical records said he had burns to his stomach and esophagus. since 2018 california social services has investigated at least six complaints against some siding the facility failed to have adequate staffing to meet residents' needs. maccarthy said the state typically releases a list of findings three days after an incident of this type. it has been a week since the first death. all they are saying is we are investigating. >> what they can do is suspend licenses. they can put someone out of

business. liz: we have resources to help ensure the elderly are taken care of safely and with respect. you can find those on our website, abc7news.com. in the south bay, san jose police say a man has died after being hit by a car around 3:00 this morning. the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene. this is the 24th pedestrian death this year in san jose. in oakland, police are asking for the public's help to identify this man. he is wanted in connection to an attempted rape and robbery that happened after 9:30 in the morning. police said the victim was walking down the street when the man, armed with a gun, approached from behind and tackled the victim to the ground and began sexually assaulting them. the victim scream for help and the man ran away and stole the victim's cell phone. in tennessee a search is

underway for a missing schoolteacher. she was abducted while out for a run. she was jogging near the university of memphis when she was forced into a dark colored suv. investigators say her phone and water bottle were discovered near a by the university. she was last seen wearing a pink top and purple shorts. >> after we found information and saw a video when someone was subducted, that will raise the bar. liz: fletcher has two children and is a junior kindergarten teacher. a $50,000 reward is being offered. a labor day weekend is here and the latest jobs report suggests an economy that remains resilient despite rising interest rates. america's employers added 315 thousand jobs in august, exceeding expectations but below july's report. the unemployment rate rose to

3.7%, up from 3.5% in july. the labor secretary told abc 7 news america's workforce is stronger than ever. >> the president has passed some major legislation that will expand manufacturing in the u.s. , expands opportunity for infrastructure that will help us with more growth across america. the inflation reduction act is another bill that is important. i see our strong moving forward. liz: he also presented a gallup poll that shows approval for labor unions at 71%, the highest level since 1965. many people are turning to swimming pools to keep cool. walnut creek, the clark swim center is staffed up in anticipation of a busy few days. and indoor classroom and a weight room at the fence -- at the facility are designated cooling areas. >> i think it will be super

area, fire workers are not only gearing up for potential fires, they are getting ready for medical calls related to the heat. ryan curry went to the fire department to see their plans. >> it is shaping up to be a busy weekend for firefighters in the bay area. the fremont mont fire department said it will be all hands on deck. >> we have two crews training, practicing firefighting techniques for this weekend. >> the chief said his crews need special gear to be ready for the extreme heat. >> these are the pants we wear, this is a structured helmet and coat. the big difference for wildland firefighting, lighter materials, lighter helmet. it is always equipped with a heat shield. >> the equipment for fighting fires is one things but he said that he to carry special equipment to keep them safe from the hot weather.
