pleasant hill were selling tickets for three dollars on saturday. that brought up the crowds, but some were trying to escape the heat. >> just trying to get up before it gets too hot, be in with the ac. reporter: the softserve ice cream was a huge hit in the heat. >> it is a nice way to cool off. reporter: they are celebrating their one-year anniversary at this café in dublin. >> we want to be with family and friends, hopefully that will be nice. reporter: holiday weekends are critical for the restaurant industry, since this café owner. but the heat wave and threat of blackouts has are concerned. >> if you lose that, it is a huge chunk out of the bottom line. reporter: the menu is described as american comfort class it's with a pakistani twist. she celebrated 18 years in business this week. many restaurants are facing a labor shortage.

inflation is pushing up costs and eating away at profit. all of this at a time when restaurants are trying to rebound from the pandemic. the blackout occurs, the food that will be spoiled could total thousands of dollars in losses in just a matter of days. >> that is an investment for the restaurant tour. you process in the ingredients then sell it. if you lose that, you are losing 30% of your total cost of business that month. reporter: so far, the restaurant has been packed. customers are staying cool. like so many, they hope the power stays on. liz: developing news, hot weather is proving to be a big burden for fire crews in raising the threat of wildfires. the mill fire has injured several people and sent thousands fleeing from the homes. it is burning near the oregon border. at last check, 50 structures have been destroyed.

we have the latest with the story of one man who lost his home and his community to the flames. reporter: flames are repton and winds whipping. the mill fire ripping through weed, leaving thousands of residents on the run. >> i look out back, there is smoke. next thing i know, my phone is screaming saying evacuate. reporter: jason and his family leaving almost everything behind , staying in a red cross shelter overnight. >> we grabbed basic clothes, blankets. reporter: friday afternoon, the fire ignited at a lumber mill north of town. picking up a devastating pace, destroying at least 100 homes. including chester hopkins. >> we lost her home yesterday. the fire started raging. reporter: the fire taking his home of 40 years, and his community. >> we lost our whole

neighborhood. we live in one of the oldest black neighborhoods in the northern section of california. reporter: he says the next step is to file an insurance claim then try to move on. >> from my neighborhood, i know we are missing a lot of people. it is going to be an empty place. your prayers and everybody's prayers. reporter: hundreds of firefighters from multiple bay area cities are battling near 40 mile-per-hour winds and extreme heat. santa rosa sent up its strike team this afternoon. >> we saw the fire activity pick up in southern california earlier in the week, now we are seeing what is happening in the northern part of the state. several departments are moving in that direction to support the community as part of strike teams. reporter: fires like this becoming all-too-familiar for the people living up here.

separate the big crashes involving pedestrians. one man died saturday morning in a crash involving several vehicles. a man driving a toyota hit several cars parked near richburg way. when he got out of his car, he was hit by a dark -- truck. last night, there was a deadly crash involving a vehicle on santa teresa boulevard. the driver is cooperating, the pedestrian suffered major injuries and died at the scene. these are the 24th and 25th pedestrian fatalities this year for the city. oakland police are asking people to help them identify the owner of this car in connection with the shooting last weekend. they claimed the lives of three people. it was last seen leaving a west oakland neighborhood near 29th street. they found two men shot a number of times. a man on the bicycle was hit and killed by one of the shooting victims as he tried to drive from the scene. a focus on health, and issue part of building a better bay

area. updated covid-19 booster shots could come to california residents in a few days. emergency authorization was issued to protect against omicron variant's and the original string of covid-19. individuals must complete the primary series of the vaccine at least two months before receiving the new booster. pfizer boosters will be available to those 12 and older. moderna is 18 and older. >> these updated boosters are what we need to avoid the worst outcomes of covid-19 and prepare us for the fall and winter. liz: updated boosters for younger children are expected to come within months. hope officials encourage residents to check with the medical provider for the booster. uc berkeley will require students not vaccinated against the flu to mask up indoors on campus this fall. the school seems unlikely to enforce it. they require students and teachers be vaccinated against the flu.

where lighter clothing. reporter: they rodemisn e heat . >> we made sure to leave early. the next few days are going to be tuesday. reporter: cooling centers are open through labor day. this one at the community center in santa rosa. health officials urge everyone to be safe and stay cool. liz: bart says weather conditions saturday lead to a 20 minute delay for trains on the antioch line heading to sfo. they said if temperatures get above 100, it would slow down trains in some areas. this is a new policy following this derailment back in june. excessive heat worked the rails between concord and pleasant hill stations. in the south bay, san jose airport targeted for closure opened its doors to the community. they brought out neighbors, pilots and aviation enthusiasts.

activists called for the airport to be shut down over environmental justice concerns. on saturday, the airport invited locals out for a family-friendly event to showcase airplane and old military equipment. opponents say the closure would hit the general aviation community in a negative way. a longtime substance abuse treatment facility for women will reopen thanks to rate their nation. athena house along with a sober living facility had been operating in santa rosa for more than 30 years. they provided 40 treatment beds for low income and formerly incarcerated women dealing with substance abuse. announced earlier this year they did not have enough funds and would have to close, that put roughly 30 women and their children at risk of homelessness. the community efforts to save the program proved successful. a couple from santa rosa stepped forward announcing they will purchase hope village and build a new athena house.

nasa's artemis one mission has been called off for a second time this week. it could take up to several weeks before it is ready to launch. it comes after a liquid hydrogen leak failed to be resolved before takeoff. they may have to roll the rocket back into the vehicle assembly building for repairs. the first setback monday had a mini technical problems, including a cooling system issue and fuel leaks. then as administrators since safety is the top priority of the mission. >> we try to stress this is a test. a test has certain risks, that is why these guys are such consummate professionals. they do it by the book. when it is ready. liz: it was created to take humans on the lunar surface by 2025. once the rocket gets off the ground, it will take five weeks to flight around the moon and back with human dummies inside. the weight continues. it has got to be just right.

marsh in an ongoing project stretching across more than 1100 acres in eastern contra costa county. back on the ground, the site is already becoming a powerful laboratory for climate and environmental research. >> we have a lot we can learn from this site. whether it is carbon sequences, things like what species are using the site. >> we have different types of sensors. here we have the methane sensor, then we have co2 sensor. reporter: for some researchers, it is already generating valuable data that could help in the fight against climate change. she is showing off sensors placed on a three level tower that monitor levels of co2 and

methane to help determine how much of the dangerous greenhouse gases may be sequestered by the title marsh. >> wetlands have water. the organic matter and soils stay there long term. all the co2 does not go back to the atmosphere, but get stored in the ground. reporter: in a nod to citizen science, they have enlisted the help of local students to buried teabags in the marsh to measure how well the organic matter helps carbon decompose. >> where the seo to get stored, basically. -- co2 gets stored, basically. reporter: they are placing covers that will attract creatures they want to study. >> birds, bats, small mammals, larger mammals.

anything with a backbone that moves through the marshes, we are trying to find where they are and how they are using the habitat. reporter: back in the sky, the extent of restoration becomes more dramatic. especially when viewed alongside the dryer form fields that surround it. she says engineers breached the levees around it a little less than a year ago. teams plaintiff thousands of native that planted thousands of nave plants to accelerate recovery and speed regeneration to a living marsh. >> the wildlife queued and immediately, before we breached. the vegetation came in so rapidly that we got the immediate response. reporter: it may be one of the most successful laboratories in the bay area, generating scientific data and new clues that could help wetland restoration projects around the bay, restoring habitats and creating powerful new sites to

you can see the clear skies, 57 in san francisco. 63 in san jose. as we check at emeryville, air quality is moderate. poor air quality inland east bay, low 60's into the east bay valleys. as we look at the forecasted air quality through labor day into tuesday, it will get worse. that links up with the hottest temperatures as we get into the heat advisory, excessive heat warning today. and then to valleys over 105 in spots. into the santa cruz mountains and the bayshore, warming up into the 90's. look at how quickly warm up by noon, into the 90's and the east bay. we are beginning to get to the dangers heat this afternoon. liz: an incident involving a likely stolen plane and terroristic threats against a mississippi walmart and did and what one official described the

best case scenario. we have the details this morning. >> they had but would be the best case scenario. reporter: people in mississippi breathing a sigh of relief after a dangerous situation. investigators say 20 nine-year-old corey patterson stole a plane early saturday morning and threatened to crush it into a local walmart on purpose. -- crash it into a local walmart on purpose. >> he called 911 to tell them he is going to crash the aircraft into the west main walmart. the police department and fire department evacuated the walmart and all surrounding areas. reporter: police say negotiators were able to talk to patterson while he was in the air and convinced into back-office threat. -- back off his threat. tracking data from this website

shows the erratic route over northern mississippi as the pilot zigzagged over several hours. the aircraft began running out of fuel around 9:30 a.m., that is when the suspect posted but investigators are calling a goodbye message. the plane eventually landed in the field about 45 miles northwest of tupelo where the suspect was taken into custody. >> we jumped on our side-by-side to go see if we could help. that is when we saw the pilot come out of the blade and two police officers were there waiting. -- plane. reporter: records show patterson had a student pilot certificate issued in 2013. investigators say he worked for a company at the airport, fueling aircraft. abc news, new york. liz: new development in the jackson, mississippi water

crisis. it's been seven days since a water plant failed, leaving thousands unable to access clean tap water. city officials say most of the residents should have near-normal water pressure. the city is still under a boil water notice, but the improved pressure is an important step forward. teams from georgia and florida are on-site to help repair and restore the automated systems. despite progress, efforts to restore the supply were setback when a chemical imbalance were detected. there are new details about the government documents seized in mar-a-lago, which includes as dozens of empty folders marked classified. the full inventory that was unsealed. reporter: this morning, those unsealed court records raising new questions about what happened to thousands of classified documents at mar-a-lago. over 11,000 documents were seized by the fbi, according to the detailed property list. 48 empty folders relabeled

classified, 42 empty folders were categorized as return to staff secretary military aid. top-secret documents according to inventory were found in boxes with things like newspaper clippings, clothing and gifts. >> one question now is, where are the classified documents? that is an investigation we expect the doj is running down. the documents could be with the archives, we do not know. they need to determine what was in those folders. reporter: investigators are worried the classified documents might have been mishandled and placed outside of mar-a-lago. the next steps could include the doj interviewing or re-interviewing people involved in packing or moving boxes. this as terms former attorney general appearing to side with the fbi when asked about their unprecedented search. >> it is unprecedented for president to take all this classified information and put them in a country club.

a network of places to escape the heat is opening throughout the city this weekend. extreme heat events are increasing in san francisco, especially with this weekend. city officials are taking action by crating a heat map to determine which neighborhoods are most vulnerable to the impacts of extreme heat. this information is vital to preparing for climate change. reporter: some like it hot, but the health implications of increasing temperatures are of concern to the city with so-called urban heat islands. >> lots of concrete, not a lot of trees. the heat can go up considerably just in those areas. chinatown has a large number of surfaces that absorb heat, coupled with the fact there is a lack of tree cover and shade. reporter: because temperatures will be high this weekend, volunteers are mapping the city to discover would streets and neighborhoods get the hottest

during a heat wave, using car mounted heat sensors. they begin collecting temperature and humidity data beginning at 6:00 a.m., then 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 at night. >> being able to capture temperature and humidity throughout the day helps us understand how long heat is persisting in certain pockets of the city. reporter: think of it as a preemptive strike. if neighbors are told of their street is hotter than other places and there is a lot of concrete and few green spaces, there are a few things the city can do to make things cooler. parks entries help with the urban cooling. that is a no-brainer. san francisco can reconfigure sidewalks to make room for more trees. in los angeles, painting the pavement in a light-colored sealant to reflect the heat has become popular in neighborhoods with little green spaces. in new york, reflective roofs are keeping buildings from trapping the heat, making things
