alex, thank you. turning now to the holiday weekend travel outlook as me tomorrow, abc's phil lipof has the latest from newark international airport. >> reporter: good morning, janai. this sunday we're in the middle of what's expected to be one of the busiest travel weekend in three years, we're talking pre-pandemic levels. as you mentioned millions of americans getting that last trip of summer in as most head back to work this week and some school in the coming weeks, a travel analytics firm is forecasting 40% increase in delays for drivers on the road this holiday weekend, but road traffic shouldn't be as bad as some of the other holiday weekends. however, airlines have been struggling to keep up with demands plagued by delays and cancellations. according to flightaware, just over 300 delays and 57 cancellations within the u.s. just today. atlanta, denver and los angeles top the list of busiest airports this extended weekend and some airlines are actually updating their customer service policy to help passengers deal with delays and cancellations by providing meal vouchers.

after delays of three hours or more. united and jetblue are among the airlines rolling out that policy. there's some good news, albe relative, but the national average of a gallon of regular gas is down to about $3.80, that's still higher this time last year, but still down 1.20 from the beginning of the summer, around june, and we get it, no one wants to talk about leaving a vacation early, however, according to the faa, today will be a much lighter travel day than tomorrow, which is expected to be one of the busiest of the weekend. so take that for what it's worth. janai. turning now to the wet weather in the east and the flood risk that comes with it, let's go to danielle breezy from our nashville affiliate wkrn. danielle, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, janai. i want to talk about this. we're looking at widespread rain and storms as we head into today and tomorrow for the rest of of the holiday weekend, from new york to d.c., atlanta to dallas, chicago included in all this, you mentioned the flood risk, we

7:08 am
are threats to democracy, trump's supporters our team spoke to at the rally say they believe trump was unfairly targeted and believe the search will backfire on the fbi and they also say biden's rhetoric has energized the trump base ahead of the midterms. now the data doesn't necessarily support that more broadly, republican candidates are trailing in key pennsylvania races, and analysis from our colleagues at fivethirtyeight indicate that trump's presence may come with some risks for gop candidates with the odds of democrats keeping the senate improving although the gop is still favored to win the house, of course with 65 days to the midterms a lot can change, tomorrow on labor day, biden will be back in pennsylvania, as well as wisconsin, two states his team has their eyes on with critical races in both places. let's bring in martha raddatz hosting "this week"
7:09 am
later this morning, you heard zohreen talk about that primetime address that president biden gave this week, we really saw for the first time in a shift in tone from the presidents calling maga extremism a threat to democracy, biden touted himself as someone who could bring people together. >> it's a real change in strategy. he's not only targeting former president trump but also his maga supporters as you said, calling them a threat to democracy. the gloves are truly off, i think what biden is trying to do here is replicate the 2020 race, although he's not on the ballot, donald trump is not on the ballot, but he is appealing to his democratic base, he's appealing to all democrats, he's appealing to independents, and of course you heard trump last night, former president trump last night calling biden the enemy of the people, this is about to get very, very interesting, eva. >> sounds like it. let's turn now to that
