>> the beach could not be beat as people sought relief from today's heat. good evening. i'm j.r. stone. the bay area bracing for record-breaking heat. soaring temperatures are also intensifying wildfires in northern california. we cover that, but first, the forecast. spencer christian tracking the hot temperatures. what kind of records are we talking about here? spencer: we have seen numerous records the last couple of days.

today we had only one record high. 106 at livermore, one of three in santa rosa. let's take a look at current temperature readings. even at this hour, we have numerous locations in our inland areas at 80 to 85 degrees. the bad news is that we have an excessive heat warning in effect a 8:00 the wednesday through all bay area locations. temperatures could get even above 110 degrees. here's a look at tomorrow's projected hi. the news doesn't get any better as we look ahead to tuesday. we expect even higher temperature readings, so there's going to be some even more dangerous heat. >> thank you so much, spencer.

pressure on owner -- pressure on our energy grid has prompted a sixth flex alert. we are asked to conserve electricity tomorrow from for club vm to 10:00 p.m., an hour later than the previous flex alert. monday and tuesday are projected to be the most powerful weights on the power supply. we are all told to set thermostats at 78 degrees or higher, avoid using major appliances, and turn off all unnecessary lights. people dealing with the brutal heat in the east bay lost an option to cool down today. it was so hot, one city shut down a popular public pool. ryan curry has the story of a family left high and dry. ryan: the hot weather is starting to arrive in the east

reopen its parks tuesday if temperatures cool off. for the second day in a row, the heat slowed down park service. bart says weather conditions led to a 10-minute delay for trans on the antioch line heading to sfo. yesterday, they were 20-minute delays in the same area. earlier this week, bart said if temperatures get above 100 degrees, it would slow down trains in some areas. excessive heat can warp the train routes. bay area beaches provided a welcome refuge to escape the heat the holiday weekend, and thousands of people headed to the coast to cool off. this morning, first responders were busy with a quick rescue. cornell barnard has the story. cornell: jose medina and his kids traded the extreme heat of santa rosa for a cool spot in the sand. >> bring the kids here to have a good time.

crowded. by midday, crowds were being turned away because lots were old. the parking lot at stinson beach was full and would likely remain that way until sunset. on the north coast, there was lots of elbow room and a cool breeze at salmon creek beach in bodega bay. popsicles all around for these friends back on ocean beach. >> this is a pretty good place to be. there's a breeze off the water. we feel lucky that we were able to get here early. jr: you can check temperatures in the weather on demand section of the abc 7 bay area streaming tv app. download it for roku, apple tv, amazon fire, and google tv. we learned today that wildfires burning in siskiyou county have taken a deadly start -- deadly turn. the so-called mil fire claimed the lives of two people. the fire started monday morning in a lumber mill in the town of

weed. it quickly raged out of control. fire officials say it has now burned at least 6.5 square miles. at least 100 structures have burned. many of them are home to the lincoln heights neighborhood of lake show stena community. evacuation orders are still in place. calfire says crews have worked day and night to protect countless homes threatened by fire. for some homes, though, it is too late. >> lost everything. roof, house, cars, rv, boats. >> i can tell you that firefighters are out there right now working as hard as they possibly can to put this fire out so they can get you back into your homes. jr: the chief did not reveal details about the two victimski. officials say the fire is 25% contained. the other fire burning in siskiyou county is more than twice the size of the one we

just spoke about. the so-called mountain fire has burned at least 13 square miles. it also started friday in a mountainous area. calfire says that their is only 10% contained. evacuations are also in place for many communities. you can track any of the wildfires burning in california by using our online interactive wildfire tracker. it also shows air quality. developing news in contra costa county where the search is on for these two escaped jail inmates. both men broke free from a minimum security jail in clayton earlier today. they are 33-year-old geraldo ramirez vera from richmond and 28-year-old jorge garcia escamilla. ramirez was serving time for burglary and weapons charges. he was going to be released in

january. garcia escamilla was in for stealing a car, among other charges. now both face felony escape charges. deputies noticed both gone this morning. both men were wearing all white or yellow jail outfits. no sign either tonight despite an all-day manhunt in the area. something suspicious happened at a popular italian restaurant in san jose. this fire that damaged part of the building may be no accident. flames were not the only danger fire crews faced on the scene. >> you can feel that good energy and the goodivenere. b celebtian

jr: welcome back. a stabbing near pier 39 in san francisco has sent one man to the hospital. police take it happen around 6:30 at p 41, which was crowded with visitors this holiday we. officers found the victim injured from several staff wounds. they are considered to be nonlife threatening. the victim was taken to the hospital for treatment. whoever did this is not been arrested. in the south bay, a two-alarm fire corrupted outside a popular italian restaurant in town town -- in downtown san jose. flames caused damage to a portion of the patio area and the front of the building. firefighters also had to deal with a downed power line. arson investigators were on the

the sun shining down on us. jr: looks like a fun time out there. spencer christian here now with a look at the weather. hopefully there is a glimmer of cool hope. it's -- spencer: we don't see that glimmer developing until five or six days from now. let's take a look at current conditions. the wind is calm, which is not good news because there's no refreshing or cooling sea breeze to drop these nighttime temperatures. right now, look at the 24-hour temperature change, and you can see that it is anywhere from five to 10 degrees warmer. that's also not good news because it means many of us will have an uncomfortable night's sleep because of the lingering overnight warmth. as we look across the embarcadero from the rooftop camera, current temperature readings, 72 santa clara, 55 at half moon bay.

you can see the absence of fog. there's no cooling coastal fog right now. these are the warm current temperatures. fairfield, 78, 80 apiece in concord and livermore. these are our forecast features. dangerous heat wave will persist through friday. record high temperatures are likely during that time along with increased fire danger, and most cooling likely until next weekend. one more look at our excessive heat warning, which is in effect through wednesday evening, 8:00 p.m. for all locations in the area except for those right around the bay shoreline and on the coast. high temperatures will be up to or about 110 degrees in the hottest location. of course, there's a high risk of heat-related illness. forecast shows no real fog at all except a patch or two along the coastline, so there will be

expected to travel. airports are seeing passenger numbers they have not seen since 2019. abc correspondent phil lipof has more. phil: as the unofficial end of summer winds down, roads and airports continue to see americans travel in numbers not seen in three years. >> this is the busiest i have seen it. phil: despite the average cost of a flight up over 20% since last labor day, more than 12 million expected to fly over the holiday. tsa screening more than 2.3 million passengers on thursday alone, more than any labor day weekend since 2013, some traveling for the first time since the pandemic hit. monday is expected to be one of the busiest days of the extended weekend. experts recommend you get on the road at non-peak hours early or late in the day if you are driving. >> not only does that cut down on time in your car, it also

related. investigators are warning residents that the suspects could be on the move. >> we cannot say with 100% certainty where they are right now, and there's a possibility they could have traveled to those locations. to target those who may not have been aware of the situation. >> the rcmp is looking for a motive. in the south bay, san jose police are investigating a shooting and car crash overnight. it happened about 1:30 this morning near first and san salvador streets in the entertainment district. investigators say gunshots were fired and a white sedan was seen leaving the area. minutes later, that same vehicle was involved in a crash at i-280 and byrd avenue. when officers got to the scene, they found a man with a gunshot wound inside the car.

he is expected to survive. no arrests have been made. the city of fremont will consider a plan this weight -- this week that takes a new approach to ending illegal car racing and sideshows. a new ordinance is expected to be released that would make it illegal to be a spectator in those shows. currently, there are no laws on the books that punish those attending those events, even though street racing and sideshows are illegal at many locations. these become a frequent problem around the bay area. we have seen shootings at these events, property damage, traffic congestion, and it'll crashes -- fatal crashes. more on which neighborhoods suffer most during the hot weather. it is called the shade divide. spencer: the big story in the weather is extreme heat.

jr: welcome back. millions of borrowers are feeling some relief thanks to president biden's student loan forgiveness plan that was recently revealed, but it looks like those forgiven deaths could still come with a price tag. several states can tax forgiven debt as income. that means borrowers could owe taxes on as much as $10,000 taken off their bill. california is not one of those states, but forgiven loans in mississippi, minnesota, wisconsin, arkansas, and north carolina will be subject to state income taxes unless they change their laws according to the tax foundation, a washington, d.c. think tank. as part of our effort to build a better bay area, a focus on the

environment, keeping cool is not just about air conditioning. it is also as simple as finding trees and shade. dan ashley explains there's a big disparity when it comes to shade in lower income neighborhoods. >> it may be the same sun beating down on the bay area, but the surface temperature it triggers during a heat wave can vary dramatically neighborhood by neighborhood. the difference is shade and the canopy of trees in some neighborhoods that lined some sidewalks and not others. >> there's a clear pattern where you can see some neighborhoods, especially the richer ones, have a lot of beautiful trees and in others, there's barely any at all. dan: this reporter spent nearly two years researching the shade divide for the july 2021 issue. she focused on southern california, but a quick survey by the abc news data team turned up similar divides in our own landscape or tree canopy ranged

barely 5% in neighborhoods with an average income of $40,000 or less to nearly triple that were people averaged $120,000 and up. often, the dividing line is as clear as a freeway. in oakland, we started in a diverse, predominantly less white neighborhood and then watched as sparse tree cover steadily gave way to lush, green yards as we passed under interstate five 580. that's where we launched greenview seven. side-by-side, the disparity is obvious. you passed from older tree-line streets on the left over highway 101 into less affluent neighborhoods like the street on the right. or you can peruse leafy

university of palo alto into the sparser locks of palo alto. researchers with the nonprofit spur say when it comes to trees, the roots of the disparity stretch back decades. >> there were a lot of factors at play. part of it was that banks strategically decided not to lend mortgages in areas that had a high number of african-american and immigrant families. they would only lend mortgages to people who work white and wealthier. dan: she says wealthier areas typically attracted more city services like wide sidewalks and trees, but fast forward to now, that disparity becomes more than a matter of aesthetics. experts say shade and water evaporation from trees can lower surrounding air temperatures by six degrees or more. it may seem obvious that shade from a tree canopy will help keep ground temperatures cooler, but as climate change continues to affect the bay area, the stakes will only get higher, and
