waiting for you wrecked band. building a better bay area moving forward finding solutions . this is abc seven news. now at six dangerous heat across california, expected to push the state's power grid beyond capacity. the concerns is warning about blackouts and what you can do to help and those students heading back to the classroom after the long holiday weekend, but some schools don't have air conditioning. what's being done to keep our kids safe from the heat and a live look outside right now is the son is starting to come up, at least in a little bit this morning. we could break more records today. lisa shared some of them with us and the heat is not over. yet she's also tracking the 40 degree temperature spread. hmm. tuesday morning. it is september the sixth. we're letting you know early. it's going to be another hat one. so don't be surprised. lisa, how hot are we talking? we had six records yesterday. a couple today it was 1 16 in livermore 107 in redwood

city. and as we look at our current numbers right now and our inland valley seventies and eighties already at six o'clock this morning, you probably know it feels warm out there. 64, nevada only 55, though. right along the coast already, 6 to 7 degrees warmer out there, and as we look outside that sun coming up at 6 44 quality inland, east bay and south bay in our dangerous heat with our excessive heat warning has been expanded through marin county and our heat advisory with upper nineties to near 100 out there today, once again could see in excess of 110 inland. we have 112 yesterday in santa rosa. 90 downtown. okay thank you, lisa this morning. there are concerns california's power supply may not be enough to meet demand in the state officials say we could break some records, and there is a warning that we could be seeing rolling blackouts if we don't all do more to conserve energy, abc seven news reporter ryan curry life force in the newsroom this morning and ryan cal. i so did not call for those

blackouts yesterday, but thousands of people still in the dark this morning and julian. parts of the bay area are still currently without power. it's another day and another flex alert as temperatures are expected to be hotter in some areas, then yesterday. this, of course means californians are once again asked to conserve power. no blackouts were called by power grid officials yesterday, but there were outages across the bay area. especially in the hottest places like the south bay and the east bay. 17,000 customers lost power yesterday evening and right now , still, thousands in livermore are without power. the official high in livermore hit 116 degrees. that's an all time record for that city. it has led to some people over in the east bay, having to get creative with how they dealt with the heat yesterday. some spoke to our reporter jr stone about camping outside because it got too hot inside. sleep outside and we've been trapped in the living room and um, we've been hanging out

in the living room all day and we have this like air conditioning machine was not really that good. i mean, you could see no one there. just wipe the sweat across his face. the flex alert tonight runs from 4 to 9. pm again this evening, calisto declared in energy emergency alert to last night that's strongly urge residents to cut down on their power usage . they say the forecast to peak for power usage is over 51,000 megawatts for the day. that's an all time record. residents all over the bay area are asked once again to cut down on power usage, or we could be seeing some more blackouts. live the newsroom. ryan curry, abc seven news, okay, thank you, ryan. and as he just mentioned there, there are power outages across the bay area. you can see them on the pg and e power outage map right now. the biggest outages are in livermore, fremont in santa rosa areas. again about 4500 folks without power in the east bay, another 1200 in the south bay at about 1100 without power in the north bay this morning, we have put a call into

pg and e for an update on when the power will be restored. will let you know as soon as we hear back this morning, and here's what you should do to prepare for these flex alert. you want to close those blinds and pull your curtains to cover windows and keep out the sun. if you need to use major appliances like your dishwasher or washer and dryer, you got to do it before four pm that's when that flex alert goes into effect. it can also pre cooked those meals to keep your oven and stove from heating up your kitchen during the hottest part of the day. and if you have an electric car, get it charged before four pm, and if you're lucky enough to have a c in your home, you want to pre cool your home by setting your thermostat as low as 72 degrees. before bumping it up to 78 at four pm students across the bay area will be returning to class today after the labor day weekend and no surprise here it is going to be hot, abc seven news reporter lena howland is joining us live in nevada this morning with a look at how schools across the region are doing their best to prepare for this, lena good morning, thomas

e. because conditions are expected to get so high three schools within the novato unified school district, including lusa, elementary school, which you see right behind me here will be switching over to a minimum day is schedule for the rest of the week. now the district has a heat plan in place to adjust schedules win needed because not every school has a conditioning . that means students will be released about 2.5 hours early at 1 15 in the afternoon instead of 3 40. this includes novato high school elementary school and the hill education center. the district playing is triggered when the forecasted temperature is 95 degrees or higher with the heat index of one. oh three or higher. it's a different story over in the san jose unified school district, as the district tells us, all schools do have a c but they will have students spend recess in lunch periods indoors for the most part. you know we'll be open regardless of the temperature. luckily our

facilities, indoor spaces are air conditioned, so we'll be spending will be addressing activities to have the kids spend more time indoors. um and obviously out of the heat as much as possible. it's rolling, blackouts hit and the power is cut. the district says schools will stay open and faculty will do everything they can to keep conditions cool and safe for everyone. as for students here in nevada, the district says, for students in non air conditioned classrooms, they may be combined with students that do have air conditioning in buildings such as media centers , cafeterias and also auditoriums. a live in nevada. lena howland, abc seven news do everything they can to keep the kids cool. thank you, lena. the excessive heat hitting the east bay especially hard as it often does encounter acosta county. one fast moving brush fire just outside of martinez. for some families from their homes. it was abc seven news reporter answer, hassan. and if you live

in the division charlie monday evening, michael murphy and his wife can do is watch fire crews battled the so called franklin fire burning along highway foreign martinez. it threatened their house and barns. my grandson called me. we were at lowe's and conquered it, and we ran back this way. luckily everything is not not too close to the house, but it's it could be the fire quickly spreads over 100 acres, prompting evacuation warnings, including for them. my dogs and yeah, the wife and anything. valuable in the house and away. we went living out in these hills. the threat of wildfires is very real climate scientist patrick brown says. it's even greater in the heat wave like this one. these heat waves on the timescales of a couple of days can really dry out your fine fuels. they call them that can really enhance the likelihood of ignitions of fires and then make fires easier to spread. fire officials say. there has been much preparation ahead of this current heatwave.

still as steve hill with the contra costa county fire protection district explains. most fires are caused by human activity, which means they're preventable. often times are fires are large fires begin along roadways and highways because of malfunctioning vehicles, vehicles, dragging chains on trailers or the people in those vehicles carelessly discarding smoking materials. monday evening, this neighborhood in pleasant hill was hit with the blackout impacting more than 2000 residents as the excessive heat continues to put huge constraints on the state's power grid. it was 111 degrees and one the creek monday evening despite the triple digit heat, gavin crib in his girlfriend decided to spend it outdoors. this is how you guys are spending your afternoon in this 100 degree? yes i mean, yeah, it's very hot out here. they wanted to spend their final few hours together before she drives back to college. it's hard out, but

disproportionate toll on families. or black, hispanic, american, indian or alaskan children can now receive the flu and covid 19 vaccines at the same visit. doctors say the flu shot is also safe for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers. this morning. evacuation orders have been lifted in siskiyou county, where the mill fire is burning. the fires now 55% contained cal fire says the fire has grown by less than 10 acres since the weekend. it's burned about 4200 acres in total and 100 buildings, a 66 year old woman and a 73 year old woman. both died in the fire. authorities have not released their names. crews are making slow progress on an even bigger fire that's also burning in siskiyou county. the mountain fire has burned more than 11,400 acres since it broke out on saturday. 20% contained and has forced the evacuation of some 332 residents. crews are hoping lighter winds forecast will help to increase the containment lines. because of this fire is not clear. such a double whammy

bay and southbay. another day were temperatures could flirt with 115, it was 117 by the delta yesterday. 9:00 in the upper 80's, 106 by the delta noontime, upper 90's in fairfield. i the afternoon, no relief. you have to be right at the beaches where we could see near 80 and pacifica. kumasi: this morning, cal iso is warning the demand for power could reach record levels as we are dealing with another day of sweltering heat. there is a serious threat of rolling blackouts across the state this afternoon, that is why officials issued a flex alert for the seventh day in a row. everyone is being asked to conserve today from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m., that means people who have air conditioning should turn the thermostat to 78 degrees or higher. everyone should avoid using large appliances and turn off lights and unplug electronics you are not using. >> forecasted demand for monday and tuesday is at all-time record levels.

the potential for rotating outages has increased significantly. we are looking energy deficits of 2000 4000 megawatts, which is as much as 10% of normal electricity demand. kumasi: cal iso officials say they are doing everything possible to avoid blackouts, but need our help to ease the stress on the grid. if blackouts are needed today, they will notify local utility companies will figure out how to execute the outages. we will update you if that happens. julian: your child's school could be impacted by the hot weather. we are live in novato at one school where the hours are going to be shifting today to try to compensate. reporter: that is right. we are at an elementary school, this is one of three schools within the novato unified school district that will be ending the

we will remain open, we will not close schools unless something really unusual happens. they will be fully operational, and we will keep the kids as cool as we can. in most facilities, the air conditioning units are one or two classrooms. if a unit goes down, we have the option of having the teacher and students moved to a separate classroom until it can be repaired. reporter: novato unified also said they do not close schools, as they believe schools are the best place for their students. even in the most extreme weather conditions. they added athletic activities and practices could be canceled or rescheduled to a more appropriate time. the same goes for before and after school activities. abc 7 news. kumasi: many bay area residents are trying to do whatever they can to stay cool, that includes going to the beach or getting ice cream.
