about, the relief, finally saying goodbye to the triple digit temperatures. good morning. thanks for being here. kumasi: let's check in with lisa because we are excited about a potential cool down but we are not there yet. lisa: we are not. some of us had that yesterday but not all of us. there is fog off the coast that sea breeze yesterday, the southerly wind provided relief for part of the bay area and is bringing temperatures down a little bit today. we are looking at numbers this morning still on the mild side but not as hot as we were yesterday at this hour. upper 60's in the south bay. 64 downtown. mid-60's in santa rosa. starting on warm again. compared to yesterday, nine degrees cooler. air quality is not the best. we have an air alert today. excessive heat warnings in the inland valleys. 106 the high. we have taken san francisco out of the advisory. by noon, 80's and 90's so a little better today.

we have one more very hot day before everyone cools off for a fantastic weekend. kumasi: thank you, lisa. thousands of area residents are waking up without power this morning and most of those people are in the south bay. let's look at the outages in the area right now. it shows you where people do not have power concentrated in the south bay around san jose. at this point, there is no timetable for when all of these customers can get power back, but these outages happened even as the state was able to avoid widespread outages from rolling blackouts. you can always check online to see the situation in your area by going to the pg&e website. >> we were able to avoid the widespread rolling blackouts, but there are still concerns about the power grid this morning. today, authorities warning the power supply may not meet demand as people are turning to keep cool. ryan curry joins us live in the newsroom with the latest on what everyone needs to do to do their part. good morning. ryan: under another flex alert

this evening, making it the eighth day in a row officials have asked us to cut down on our power usage. although temperatures will be cooler today, it will still be a hot one, putting more strain on our power grid. californians will be asked to reduce the amount of power they used. last night, we were able to avoid the rolling blackouts. but kauai so -- but cal iso said that was largely due to the changes we made. state lawmakers say we need to do more to invest in renewable energy to prevent this sort of thing from happening again. >> this is really all ofan -- really an all of the above strategy. >> the power didn't go out in several places in the bay area,

but those were not from calling for rolling blackouts but other heat related issues. for today, those recommendations of turning off unused appliances and setting the thermostat to 78 or higher will be crucial yet again as the heatwave is not over yet. ryan curry, abc7news. kumasi: thank you. as we heard him just mentioned, another flex alert today from 4:00 to 9:00. same thing we have been doing last seven days, close your blinds, pull the curtains to keep the windows closed and the sun out. if you need to use major appliances like the dishwasher, washer, and dryer, do that. you can avoid the oven and stove from heating up the house during the hottest part of the day and set your thermostat as low as 72 degrees before you move it up to 78 at 4:00 p.m. if the weather gets too hot again, commuters may have delays getting home.

yesterday, bart had to shut down two stations. our reporter joins us live from a station with more on what is going on this morning. >> good morning. the good news here is commuters will not have to worry this morning as service has since been restored to the pleasant hill station as you can see right behind me. here you can see people going up the escalator find us. but the only thing is the morning commute maybe slower than usual. we got an update from bart officials after midnight saying they are recovering from an earlier problem and are now single tracking between here atd pleasant hill and concord -- here at pleasant hill and concord. the areas are sharing the same track this morning and will have to wait for each other in the impacted areas but it is still a big improvement from last night when the station had no service,

instead offering a bus bridge where passengers had to get off the train, get on a bus that took them around the section of the track impacted, and get back on the train. we saw crowds of people rushing to get to the buses last night. one rider we talked to was forced to jump through these hoops to get home to antioch. >> yeah, i had to get over to antioch from san francisco. it has been pretty hot. we are just trying to get to our destination. they said the trucks were warped a little more bart issues. we have to get on this bus bridge. >> bart officials told us this was all because of a heat related trackside problem, but that happened as bart was already slowing trades down systemwide because of the heat, causing 20 minute delays for all commuters. that is a new policy because it major element that happened back in june. as we all are expecting triple digit temperatures again today,

rafael for your wednesday morning commute. light movement passed the northgate mall and civic center. you are smooth sailing across the golden gate bridge. not one ounce of fog this morning. no delays at the richmond parkway or the richmond-san rafael bridge. the parkway has some roadwork out there. we are getting reports of slow traffic on the richmond parkway headed to the bridge. once you are at the toll plaza, it is an eight minute drive across the span. a heads up once again that we have a commuter alert for bart riders. the concord and pleasant hill section is single tracking, resulting in about 20 to 25 minute delays on the antioch line. that is expected for most of the morning. lisa: yesterday, we beat some of the daily records by about 10 degrees. that happened early because by about 12:00, 1:00, we had a 24 degrees drop in 20 minutes around napa, parts of the bait.

matteo on july 27 in the canal district. he admitted to drinking beer on the sidewalk with his friends after a long day of work and explained in spanish and english that he had to stand to retrieve his id. but two officers moved quickly. >> stop. >> the crowd was especially upset with the smiles of both officers after. the mayor announced this evening they hired an outside independent investigator to review the conduct of the officers and their supervisors that day. >> we will work with community partners to determine how we start rebuilding trust with each other. >> after days of refusing my request for an interview, i finally confronted the police chief. i am dan noyes from channel seven. what do you say to the people from san rafael about what happened? >> we are really concerned about this incident, obviously, as we shared in our spokesmen have shared. we are doing a full and comprehensive investigation and our people will be held accountable. >> the council listened to the

complaints late into the night, promising not to move onto other business until everyone was heard. for the i team in san rafael, dan noyes, abc7news. kumasi: september is suicide prevention awareness month. after two decades of increases, the national suicide rate is going down in the u.s. a cdc report before the pandemic showed the suicide rate in america had increased 33% from 1999 to 2019. the numbers actually started to dip in 2018 and 2019 and dropped 3% in 2020. a mental health expert addressed what might be behind this drop. >> people are calling for a multitude of reasons. they are either actively experiencing suicidal thoughts, may be feeling down and alone. going back to school and "back to work" has impacted people's mental health. the one silver lining in this is that people are talking about

needing mental health services in a way that hasn't happened in the past decade. people are readily acknowledging the need to take care of themselves from the mental health perspective. kumasi: he says the new three digit national suicide hotline is also making it easier for people to get help. that number is 988. we also have a list of local resources at abc7news.com/take action. >> a british woman with a hypersensitive sense of smell may lead doctors to a medical breakthrough, developing smell tests that could detect parkinson's disease. she noticed her late husband smelled it differently before he was diagnosed with the disease. scientists researched what she can smell and if it can be used to identify people before they are diagnosed. researchers developed a test that can be used by running a con swab on the back of someone's neck. they are hoping the test can be rolled out and used for a quicker diagnosis. kumasi: another to parents and

caregivers this morning involving baby formula. the fda is advising against giving mothers touch baby formula. this is being sold without proper clearance according to the fda. it adds the label contains claims for seven nutrients that do not meet the requisite for infant formula. the other big issue is according to the fda that mother's milk has not been properly tested for the presence of potentially harmful bacteria. the fda says do not buy it and if you have it, throw it away. >> google is planning on revealing new technique to month. it is set for 7 p.m. pacific on october 6. google is launching its neck generation pixel phone with a new chip, a pixel watch built entirely by google, now expected to be released with the new pixel phones. they will also be expending the nest smart home devices too. kumasi: everybody is just coming

join us on a wednesday morning, and we have another flex alert scheduled for today. people waking up without power. we will tell you where people are getting affected the most in the bay area. kumasi: it has been a decades long issue with the power good. what experts are saying during this record-breaking heat wave. julian: we are taking a live look outside right here this morning from our santa cruz tower camera. a beautiful shot as you wake up on a wednesday. lisa back with us ready with her full forecast across the bay area. we will talk about when we might be able to finally see some relief. kumasi: good morning, everyone. julian: let's get right to lisa here as we talk about the forecast once again, this eighth consecutive flex alert day. lisa: that's right. we got into this heat wave on sunday so i am talking about the fourth day of triple digit heat. two more to go. tomorrow will be hotter than today. as we look outside right now, it is pretty from san francisco, where we had a big drop in

temperatures yesterday from 98 down to the 70's in about 30 minutes. 63 in the city. 72 in san jose. from mount tam, it is in the 80's. very dry you will. 64 and santa rosa so the fire danger is elevated at the excessive heat warning continues through thursday at 8:00. we are slightly cooler this morning. air quality is not great. poor air quality east and south bay and pretty much everywhere looking at temperatures at least 10 degrees above average. san francisco and the immediate coastline ticket out of the heat advisory. the rest of us through thursday. notice the warm up to the 90's at 1:00.thank you kumasi: -- kumasi: thank you. people are waking up with no power. many of those people are in the south bay. here is a look at it right now. there is no timetable of when all those people you see in the

green and yellow in the south bay will get their power back. these outages still happen even as the state was able to avoid widespread outages from rolling blackouts. you can always check online to see the situation in your area by going to the pg&e website. julian: although the strain on the power grid we are seeing this week may be new to us this year, the race for the energy supply has been going on in the state. zach fuentes spoke with an expert who weighs in on the change and how long we can continue to see these annual outages. zach: it was the year 2000 when rolling blackouts first hit the bay area. in 2001, they spread to the entire state. since then, a lecturer says he believes has done as much as possible to take care of the electrical grid. >> i look at other states like texas, whether it is cold or hot, they are suffering because they have issues with their

grid. we don't have the same issues. we are aware of what is the problem. zach: stage three emergency alerts mean rolling blackouts are more imminent. california reached the level once in 2000 and 38 times in 2001. after 2001, the next time we saw the same alert was twice in 2020. over the last two decades, california has led the country integrating solar and wind sources to supply the grid. but at times when the clean resources are not producing enough and demand is high, better resources are used. as a last resort, fossil fuels. a lot of steps have been taken to fill in gaps during higher demand periods. this san jose powerplant behind me started operating in 2003 to help fill gaps when demand was at its highest. it is not the only one of its kind, but still, strain on the energy grid continues to be a problem. a major part of that issue is climate change. >> for example, if you talk

about some of the hydraulic powers that use water to generate power, it is running dry because of the dry weather. zach: as the impact of dry weather continue, will the strain be something we live with annually? he says it depends on several factors. >> the solution has multiple parties that have to take action before we can say we will not face something like this. better resources for the grid so the grid can keep pumping power to us, better practices by us, and dealing with climate change as a reality. zach: zach fuentes, abc7news. kumasi: we went inside a pg&e command center where the utility is working around-the-clock to do with the heat related equipment failures. those can take longer to fix. many bay area communities have seen the impact of failing transformers. pg&e says they are stacked up and ready to respond. >> the hardest hit areas, the most impacted are projected to be here in the bay area so we have crews coming up from

elsewhere that are not as heavily impacted, ready to respond at a moments notice -- moment's notice. kumasi: if your power goes out unexpectedly, you should call them and report outage so they can assign someone immediately. julian: service is not restored between two east bay stations, which is welcome news to some commuters. lena howland is at the station with an update we got woman to go. good morning. lena: good morning. that's right. and it's a go, bart gave us the update that service has been restored on both tracks between this pleasant hill bart station you see behind us and the conquered bart station after a little more than one hour of single tracking this morning. but commuters are still being urged to plan for at least a 10 minute delay. this causes delays of about 20 minutes because all trains in this area worshiping the same track earlier this morning and had to wait for each other in

drinks to those without a permanent home. san francisco's recreation and parks department, if you are looking to cool off, listen to this, offering a free dip in the pool for the whole family. today, they are not charging admission for afternoon swimming at many of its neighborhood pools. free family swim hours very -- vary depending on the location. you can find that information online. cooling centers like this one in san jose are open all around the bay area. they are convenient places to get something cool to drink, especially if you don't have ac. the transportation authority this week is offering free rides to cooling centers in santa clara county. we have a list of all the cooling centers around the bay area on our website, abc7news.com. julian: there are new developments in the fbi search of former president trump's mar-a-lago estate. the washington post is reporting this morning some of the documents seized last month attained -- contain information
