what a career. much more on sue bird's send-off coming up. we are looking forward to that. we're going to begin with the dangerous situation in the west. multiple wildfires burning thousands of acres. right now 14 million americans are under fire weather alerts across seven states from california to south dakota. >> over 50 million people across four states in the west are under heat alerts this morning as record-breaking heat continues. the brutal temperatures leading to growing power outage fears. >> ginger is tracking what could finally bring relief and starts us off with the latest on hurricane kay. good morning. >> good morning to all of you. so breaking records within the last week is nothing new, daily records. breaking all-time september records has happened for a couple of days. now we're breaking all-time all-time hottest records. that's when you know it's a big deal. there were 75 daily records broken just yesterday. 15 of those were all-time all-times talking about heat like sacramento that has never since they started records in the 1850s been this hot. that heat dome is responsible,

we are going to erode that in part especially in southern california by parts of a hurricane. i'll explain that, but, look, a couple days left before it starts to break. close to 100 in los angeles. las vegas, same thing. it is about the moisture that comes from what is now a hurricane eventually will be a tropical storm, pretty rare to get this close to southern california. what will end up happening is not only will it end up building clouds which is a shield, and get us cooler, but you also have the potential for rain and a lot of it. you know what happens when you're really dry and drop a lot of rain especially for palm springs, flash flooding so we'll watch for that this weekend. >> all right. thank you, ginger. we go to will carr in the fire zone in hemet, california, as that severe heat in the west is threatening to fan the flames of several major wildfires. good morning, will. >> reporter: good morning, michael. this is where planes swept in to protect property. you can see the pink phosphate smothered on cars.

this fire burned a number of the properties up and down this street. this morning crews are confident with the fire's path, but there's still a lot of concern with the extreme heat and the possibility of fueling more fires and rolling black-outs. this morning, the west is burning under extreme heat. several rapidly spreading wildfires consuming california as officials sound the alarm on potential power outages amid an unrelenting heat wave. thousands under evacuation orders by hemet as the fairview fire scorches 4,500 acres. officials warning that number could jump to 7,000. >> had 15 minutes to grab everything and run and was on fire below my house when it was leaving. >> reporter: the fire, 5% contained and proving fatal killing two civilians and destroying multiple homes. firefighters battling more deadly flames further north. the mountain fire blazing more than 11,000 acres, only 20%

contained while in san bernardino, the radford fire is only 2% contained. evacuations under way. >> i have a lot of anxiety right now. >> reporter: the flames fueled by dry conditions and strong winds come during a time of record-breaking heat in the west. the brutal temperatures surging electric demand leading to growing fears of power outages, california seeing its highest demand ever on the power grid. overnight, california independent system operator issuing an emergency alert urging residents to conserve energy. it appears those conservation efforts worked. there were no black-outs overnight. here in hemet we're expecting temperatures over 100 degrees. michael? >> i know they cannot wait for relief.

gr george? now we go to the latest on the war in ukraine. major developments this morning, russian president putin set to meet with hinese president xi. the summit expected to take place next week in uzbekistan. this as ukraine has expanded its counteroffensive against russian forces and tom soufi burridge is on the scene in ukraine. good morning, tom. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, george. the ukrainians now claim they've taken a small city in the northeast and add that to the villages they say they've taken elsewhere in recent days and we calculated about 15 in total, and it feels like the momentum has shifted in ukraine's favor, but the counteroffensive is risky and reports suggest ukraine is losing soldiers but the russians are too. this morning, ukraine is advancing slowly through the russian lines. video circulating online showing fallen russian soldiers in the kharkiv region in the northeast as ukraine pushes to recapture villages from the russians. this as u.s. officials claim that the russians' munition stocks are running so low they're now asking for help from north korea. >> we do have indications that russia has approached north korea to request ammunition.

>> reporter: meanwhile, new images of damage caused by shelling at that nuclear power plant near zaporizhzhia. overnight, the u.n.'s nuclear watchdog urging russia and ukraine to immediately cease all military operations in that area and establish a nuclear safety and security protection zone around the plant. >> we are playing with fire and something very, very catastrophic could take place. >> reporter: meanwhile, the ukrainians increasingly on the offensive. former u.s. marine issack from texas running reconnaissance missions for the ukrainians along the front line in the south. >> i have very high expectations that the ukrainian forces will be able to beat back the russians and restore their, you know, their territorial integrity. >> reporter: that u.s. fighter also telling us that it's a bold move by the ukrainians to go on the offensive.

he says they're well prepared and the signs are good. but that it's early days. robin? >> all right, encouraging. thank you, tom. now to the manhunt for the remaining suspect in the horrific stabbing spree that left at least 10 dead and 18 wounded in canada. marcus moore is in saskatoon, canada, with the latest. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: robin, good morning. police and residents here in saskatoon and across the province are still on high alert as this urgent search is now in its fourth day. there has been new movement. police surrounding a home in the james smith cree nation after a possible sighting yesterday but there is still no sign of 30-year-old myles sanderson. so police are continuing to send out emergency alert messages to cell phones across the province here warning people that they believe he is still armed and very dangerous. as you know, his brother was also a suspect but he was found dead in a field on monday. police saying his injuries were

not self-inflicted. as this search continues, we have watched as relatives of one of the elderly victims came to pay their respects at a memorial outside his home. meanwhile ten people are still in the hospital, three in critical condition. there's still no word on a motive. robin and george, there's a sense this search is expanding. the police chief in a small town where it was long believed sanderson might be, they have now come out and said they no longer believe he is in that area and he could be anywhere. george? we go to new york now where trump ally steve bannon is expected to surrender to prosecutors tomorrow. the state charges are centered around bannon's fraudulent fund-raising for a we build the wall campaign. trump ended the federal case against bannon on similar charges with a pardon. aaron katersky is tracking the case. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: and george, good morning to you. that online crowd funding campaign we build the wall

raised $25 million and donors were told it would all go toward a wall on the u.s. southern border with mexico. but prosecutors have come to believe that bannon duped them and siphoned hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay personal expenses and he's expected at this courthouse here behind me to face charges. bannon who worked in the trump white house faced similar charges by the feds over the same alleged scheme until the former president pardoned him on his way out of office. but two others charged with bannon on those same federal charges did not receive a pardon. they pleaded guilty and ever since the manhattan district attorney's office has been building its own case against bannon. he called the charges phony, part of a weaponized criminal justice system but he is expected to surrender here tomorrow and, george, this is not the only legal trouble for bannon. he has already been convicted of contempt of congress for failing to cooperate with the january 6th committee. george? >> aaron katersky, thanks.

michael? >> all right, george. thank you. we turn to the memphis kindergarten teacher and mother who was violently abducted, police discovered her body and the man charged with kidnapping will be back in court facing murder charges. mola lenghi has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, the man police say kidnapped eliza fletcher now facing murder charges. 38-year-old cleotha abston in court tuesday facing fletcher's family for the first time after an exhaustive four-day search, police finding fletcher's body in a vacant duplex apartment in memphis monday evening. it was just a few miles from where she was abducted. >> we are nonetheless pleased to remove this dangerous predator off the streets of memphis. >> reporter: police say fletcher was kidnapped while jogging around 4:00 a.m. friday. this surveillance video showing a man jumping out of a black gmc suv running towards fletcher, then forcing her into the suv. minutes later driving off with the young mom inside. sunday u.s. marshals tracked down that suv and surveilled abston for hours before taking him into custody.

>> the vehicle was key in this, okay. >> spotted the vehicle. >> spotted the vehicle. identified an apartment where he was in and then we just kind of did surveillance. >> reporter: that apartment just a half mile from where fletcher's body would be found monday. authorities have not yet alleged a motive. the district attorney describing it as a random killing. >> we have no reason to think this was anything other than an isolated attack by a stranger. >> reporter: fletcher's family releasing a statement saying we are heartbroken and devastated by this senseless loss. liza was such a joy to so many. well, authorities have yet to release fletcher's cause of death. meanwhile, abston will be in court later this morning. george? >> okay, thanks very much. we turn to e-cigarette industry leader juul. the company agreed to pay hundreds of millions of dollars to settle claims that they marketed vaping products to children. chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis has the details.

good morning, rebecca. >> good morning, george. juul has agreed to pay $438.5 million to 34 states and territories over its marketing practices while not admitting guilt. juul says it is all in the past and the company now has a new honorable mission. the two-year investigation finding juul intentionally tried to appeal to children with ads like these featuring young, trendy models. other marketing tactics including hosting launch parties for new products, offering free samples, advertising on social media and selling products in flavors attractive to children, and it worked apparently. in 2019 the same year juul says it, quote, reset the company, more than 5 million young people said they tried vaping within the past 30 days. just the year before, that number was 3.6 million. juul commenting in a statement, the terms of the agreement are aligned with our current business practices. we remain focused on the future as we work to fulfill our mission to transition adult smokers away from cigarettes, the number one cause of preventable death while combating underage use. george?

boat, rushed her to the dock but she died before making it to the hospital. tis morning, the search for answers after a deadly shark attack in paradise. a 58-year-old mother was bitten by a bull shark while snorkeling with her family in the bahamas. >> family members observed a bull shark attacking a female. they rescued the female and was able to bring her on board. our local ems personnel responded to the scene and confirmed that there were no vital signs of life. >> reporter: the woman from pennsylvania traveling on royal caribbean's "harmony of the seas" cruise with her husband, daughter and son. they went snorkeling around 2:00 p.m. tuesday. the cruise line saying the accident took place on an independent shore excursion and the cruise line is providing support and assistance to the guest's loved ones during this difficult time. officials say an attack in this area, green key, is weird. >> it's not a popular place for bull sharks at all.

not a popular place at all. >> reporter: about half a mile away in the waters off rose island, 21-year-old american jordan lindsay was killed by bull sharks while snorkeling in 2019. her father michael telling "good morning america" about the horrific attack and how his wife tried to save their daughter. >> she heard jordan yell, like, mom, like, and then cami looked back and she thought dolphins were around jordan and then she realized like right away like jordan was screaming. >> reporter: experts warn while shark encounters are rare, bull sharks can be especially dangerous. >> bull sharks are one of the top three i would say most dangerous sharks to humans. they have serrated teeth that are like daggers. if they bite someone, it could be very problematic and even unfortunately fatal to humans because they just are, you know, so big. >> reporter: and the beach at green key closed till further notice and an investigation is under way.

michael? >> devastating there, victor, thank you. george? we're going to get the latest now on elizabeth holmes. the theranos founder convicted of fraud who inspired "the dropout" series is seeking a new trial saying a star witness has regrets about his testimony. rebecca jarvis is on the story from the start. how is it going? >> george, there are so many twists and turns in this story. she was convicted on four counts of criminal fraud by a federal jury in january and now in this last-ditch effort to get elizabeth holmes a new trial before she's sentenced to prison, the defense is alleging one of the government's key witnesses came to her home recently to tell her he felt guilty about his testimony. this morning, theranos founder elizabeth holmes is fighting for her freedom as her sentencing looms. >> do you think this will lead to an acquittal? >> reporter: eight months after being found guilty the convicted felon is seeking a new trial or court hearing based on what she says is newly discovered evidence. in a motion filed this week,

hlmes' legal team points to what they say was an unexpected visit to her home last month by key government witness and former theranos lab director dr. adam rosendorff who allegedly said he felt guilty and felt like he had done something wrong in connection with his testimony at the trial. that's according to holmes' partner billy evans. according to the court filings evans answered the door and later wrote a description of rosendorff as dishevelled, saying his voice slightly trembled. rosendorff who testified at the wid while at theranos allegedly told evans the thgs s worse than they were. >> his testimony was certainly important to the government in terms of putting the story together. however, a lot of the allegations, in particular, the ones that elizabeth holmes was convicted of, involved fraud that was made to the investors. >> reporter: in the court filings evans states that rosendorff also allegedly said america builds things up only to

tear them down, comparing elizabeth holmes to michael jackson. holmes once the youngest female self-made billionaire rose to fame for starting her biotech company theranos, claiming she had invented technology that could do any blood test with just a few drops of blood. >> we've made it possible to run comprehensive laboratory tests from a tiny sample or a few drops of blood. >> reporter: but everything came crashing down after 't what it appeared to be and this past january, holmes was found guilty by a federal jury for four counts of fraud. we reached out to dr. adam rosendorff and he declined to comment. holmes' sentencing is set for october. she's facing up to 20 years per count and she's currently living with billy evans and their 1-year-old son william in northern california. george? >> okay, rebecca, let's bring in chief legal analyst dan abrams for more on this right now. is she going to get a new trial?

>> you don't get a new trial because a witness comes to your house and says, gosh, i'm sort of sorry about what i said. even if this witness was saying, you know, i lied -- that's not what he's saying. but even if he said that you still probably don't get a new trial here. >> even if he said i lied? >> even if he said i lied. it's very hard to get a new trial after a jury has gone through the process of deliberating. you have to really have misconduct in a trial to get a new trial, in particular in a case like this. remember, there's already been a request for a new trial that's been denied and think about the way that this verdict came down, right? there were four counts where she was found guilty, but there were other counts where the jury said not guilty. there were other counts where the jury was hung. they deliberated for a long time. and their verdict kind of made sense. it was this idea she had defrauded the investors, but they weren't convinced that she had defrauded the patients,

tens of thousands of students set to return to the halls of schools in washington's largest school district will instead stay home as day one of a planned teacher strike begins today. the seattle education association and the school board hve been negotiating for months over the union's demands for, they say, to address teacher burnout. over the weekend educators made signs and trained picket captains in anticipation of demonstrations. the union says 95% of its members voted tuesday in favor of the strike after both sides failed to cut a deal. even rejecting a tentative deal that would have allowed schools to start on time. teachers say the last couple years have been challenging. they are pushing for pay increases, policies to cap employees' workloads and the right to take personal days when needed as well as maintaining staffing ratios for special needs and multilingual kids. the strike began at 7:30 this morning. both sides are still in talks. they say they share a common goal of getting kids back into
