than 10 degrees and our power use also down below yesterday's records, but we are not in the clear yet. no, a flex alert is in effect. so is this bear the air alert and temperatures are still in the triple digits abc 7 news meteorologist. sandy patel is on top of it all. yeah literally on top of the effects and figures and on top of our building sandy any records today, no records today, dan and alma, but we do expect records tomorrow up here on the roof. it's actually quite refreshing and nice out here. let me show you the high temperature for today 81 in the city. that's down 17 degrees from yesterday's high in the upper 90s as you will notice 108 in fairfield 107 and livermore, san jose 97 degrees 88 in oakland triple digits in santa rosa compared to 24 hours ago 9 degrees cooler in the city seven degrees cooler in hayward. let me show you the excessive heat warning that remains up for a high to very high heat risk. this is for all inland areas and the hills until tomorrow night
6:01 pm
as you will notice solano county until friday night and lake county until friday night as well. there's still this dangerous heat wave continuing today's day five tomorrow's day six heat advisory until 8 pm tomorrow for the bay shore line marin coastal areas the coastal range, i should say and the coast and that is because heat risk is still there. we are watching on live doppler 7 active weather in the sierra seeing those thunderstorms flaring up isolated thunderstorm can't be ruled out here this upcoming weekend as all eyes are on hurricane. a just pounding the baja peninsula. we have the possibility of showers this weekend. i'll be back to let you know when you might need those umbrellas and when we will get out of this excessive heat wave that we've been dealing with dan that sounds nice sandia. thanks very much. all right, this map shows current pg&e outages and these are not planned outages this big red section more than 7,000 customers in san jose who don't have power right now. it's been out for hours.
6:02 pm
in fact pg&e blames this outage on the weather at often overloads the equipment. there are other large outages around morgan hill gilroy and san mateo thousands more customers affected. remember if your power goes out you can still get the news on your phone. so download the abc 7 bay area app so far there is enough power supply to meet the demand, but we need to keep it that way and abc 7 news. anchor carina. nova is in the newsroom. all right, karina. how are you doing? a good question dan right now. we're okay, but we are under another level 2 energy emergency meaning rotating outages are still possible. once again, pg&e says they gave advanced notice to about 525,000 customers and there is some good news when it comes to that flex alert. it seems like people have been using less energy during those four to nine pm peak times and that's worked in preventing massive power outages. here's a quick look at the online cal iso demand trend now
6:03 pm
and yesterday we broke a demand record, but you see that red line that red line is good. that means that we are not above where we where the critical time is right now, so we're in a good spot. we should be okay, but the six to seven o'clock hour, that's the critical time when it comes to energy use. this might have helped lower that demand just this afternoon some pg&e customers received a message like this one on their phones. this is a pg&e rotating outage alert. it says saying the state's electric grid operator has issued a notice that rotating outages may be required today if the demand for electricity exceeds supply and this emergency alert went out on phones yesterday millions of california's being asked to conserve energy that reminders seem to work the online energy grid showed a drop in demand right after it was sent out people reminded to turn off their lights not use their appliances and today governor
6:04 pm
newsome called that alert a game changer. 27 million of those text messages went out. and within 45 minutes saw roughly 2600 megawatt reduction and uses that not happened. we would have had some episodic load reduction. that was extraordinary. the governor said they threw out the playbook for this heat event. that's because this one exceeded their worst-case scenarios, and that's also because it lasted for about a week for the whole entire state. karina let's talk a little bit about the future. what is the plan for trying to prevent situations like this, especially in this global warming period that we seem to be facing and the likelihood that will be in this boat many more times in the future talk about what the governor wants to do. yeah. there is a good likelihood that we're going to be dealing with something like this. again. the governor said he plans to do his part in trying to make sure we don't have to go through this again that includes a continued transition to more battery
6:05 pm
storage and to more energy and backup supply the new strategic reserve will be funded by the 4.2 billion dollars just passed in the legislature newsom says that will provide an additional 4,000 megawatts by 2024 dan. okay, karina. thank you very much one way to prevent outages is to increase power storage professor james bushnellon energy and environmental policy researcher from uc davis tells abc 7 news that's easier said than done. i think one of the challenges we're gonna face is everybody wants batteries batteries for all sorts of things. trying to add more electric vehicles. we're trying to add more grid storage and there is really a bottleneck in terms of the supply of these technologies. so what we're also seeing is a rethinking of certain types of supply we've seen diablo canyons lifetime expanded for five years apparently at this point, and we're we may need to rethink the role of natural gas generation at least in the near term to

temperatures did come down today as you look from our emeryville camera back towards san francisco and sutro tower it is clear right now 70 in the city 80 in oakland. you're in the 90s in places like san jose and santa clara the wind definitely playing a role right now 29 miles an hour coming off that cool ocean water helping to bring a double-digit drop. temperatures for some coastal and bayside communities inland areas not as big of a drop from our exploratorium camera. you're looking at sunshine right now heat intensifies. tomorrow records are likely sharply cooler, but humid weekend and there's a slight chance of showers and possible thunder. so right now sierra nevada has been seeing thunderstorms as trough passing to our north providing the lift for that moisture that is going through we're keeping an eye on current hurricane k. it's a category two hurricane max sustained winds of 100 miles an hour. it has been lashing out at southern baja peninsula was strong winds and heavy rain it will continue to pound that area as it skirts the coast heading

towards southern california and then veering away as a tropical storm, but here's the deal they're going to get soaked in southern california as we had towards the weekend and there's even the potential for thunderstorms as early as friday not just in southern california, but parts of the central sierra here in the bay area. it's going to get close that moisture not quite all the way to our region, but we're putting in a slight chance a 20% chance that we may see a few showers friday night late into saturday around the bay area and an isolated thunderstorm can't be ruled out rainfall potential for southern california anywhere from an inch to possibly up to three inches expected there and we certainly needed as you know, because of the intensity of this heat wave and also the very dry fuels that we're dealing with which is why some of those fires in california are just blowing up temperatures right now anywhere from the 50s to the 70s, i should say tomorrow morning another warm one. we did have some record lows this morning.
6:19 pm
we're looking at warm conditions inland coastal areas with some fog afternoon highs in the south bay. they're going up 100 in san jose 106 and gilroy on the peninsula 97 in redwood city 78 and half moon bay downtown san francisco 86 degrees. south city 89 in the north bay. you're going to see plenty of triple digits from fell at 101 to 108 calistoga 106 degrees in santa rosa 80th stinson beach heading into the east bay 90 in oakland 94 in castro valley 97 fremont had inland. it's going to be hot and hazy one of our hottest spots fairfield at 112 110 degrees in livermore the accuweather seven-day forecast heating up again tomorrow 112 inland mid 70s coast side. friday is the last day of this heat wave. so tomorrow's day six days seven friday much cooler for the weekend, maybe even some showers on saturday certainly down to the 80s inland warmer, but still humid on sunday and then you will notice as temperatures
