a breakthrough win for american tennis sensation frances tiafoe. the history he's now made and the marathon match overnight to determine his next opponent. and later, toilet paper back in the news because it's shrinking. has shrinkflation gone too far? good thursday morning, everyone. we want to begin with breaking news. a deadly shooting spree in memphis, tennessee, and a massive manhunt that paralyzed the city for hours. >> a 19-year-old man is accused of driving around memphis firing shots at people while streaming the violence on facebook live. police say ezekiel kelly went on a random shooting spree for more than two hours killing at least four people and injuring three others. >> in a facebook video that has now been removed, the suspect was reportedly seen walking into an auto parts store and opening fire. while police searched for kelly the city suspended bus service.

a mine league baseball game was placed on lockdown and nearby college students were told to shelter in place. >> ordinary citizens doing ordinary things getting off from work, picking up children from day care, just going about their ordinary lives when it was all of a sudden shattered. many families were shattered tonight. >> police reported eight crime scenes. kelly was eventually taken into custody ad court records show there was already an arrest warrant issued for him for first degree murder. now to the other breaking news overnight, an arrest in the murder of a respected journalist in las vegas. the suspect is a prominent local official. this morning police in las vegas have arrested a local politician in the murder of a well-known journalist. s.w.a.t. teams swarmed the home of clark county administrator robert teles late yesterday where they found him holed up inside. hours earlier police raided his

home. >> reporter: teles was seen - walking past reporters wearing a white hazmat suit. >> do you have a comment? >> reporter: investigators not explaining the suit, but they say teles is now the top suspect in the stabbing death of jeff german, a las vegas reporter and a vocal critic of the teles administration. he was found dead outside his home saturday. police saying he had been stabbed multiple times. >> everyone i think is united in our community from the media to the police to the public to try to solve this crime as quickly as possible. >> reporter: on tuesday authorities released this video of a suspect near german's home saying it appears the person may have been casing the area to commit a crime disguised as a member of a known burglary ring and they also showed photos of the suspected killer's vehicle. a similar suv was towed away teles' home yesterday. police then escorted neighbors and media from the area. some climbing down ladders to safety. and then officers moved in to make the arrest. teles taken into custody and brought to the hospital

suffering from what police describe as self-inflicted stab wounds. a spokesperson from the teles' office refused to comment on the arrest last night. millions of people all across the west are bracing for another day of blistering heat. new video shows homes on fire as the so-called mosquito fire burns in the tahoe national forest in northern california threatening more than a thousand buildings just hours after the state narrowly avoided a power crisis. this morning, people in california have avoided planned rolling blackouts so far. >> my sincere thanks to electricity consumers who responded to our flex alert by flexing their demand. >> reporter: the power grid operator warning of outages due to the record demand during this historic heat wave. officials now blame a miscommunication with utility operators for causing some unnecessary blackouts tuesday. >> everyone has to do their part. >> reporter: meanwhile, governor gavin newsom is facing criticism after releasing a video urging

residents to conserve energy while wearing a fleece in what appeared to be a well air conditioned room. >> and the risk for outages is real, and it's immediate. >> reporter: the governor's office says the video was recorded before peak demand time. >> 110 in stockton, 107, modesto. >> reporter: it comes amid a year of extremes in the state. take sacramento, for example. it just experienced its hottest temperature ever, 116 degrees. it had its wettest day ever last october and also within the last 12 months its longest dry spell. the conditions in southern california are fueling a massive wildfire in riverside county, doubling in size in just 24 hours killing 2 people. >> all i can do is keep an eye on it and hopefully stay put. if i have to leave i have to leave. >> reporter: elsewhere, salt lake city tied its all-time record yesterday hitting 107. boise set a new all-time high at 104.

and in arizona, heat-related deaths are up 30% in the phoenix area compared to last year. back on the west coast some relief is in sight. hurricane kay is expected to hug the coast this weekend bringing much needed rain. we will take a closer look at the forecast in just a few moments. police in canada say the second suspect wanted for a stabbing rampage has died after being arrested in saskatchewan. myles sanderson was taken into custody after being chased in a stolen vehicle. authorities say he went into medical distress. he and his brother who was found dead monday were wanted for the stabbing deaths of ten people. some of them random attacks. a new development overnight in the january 6th investigation. we have learned a current adviser to former president trump is under scrutiny from the fbi and has been subpoenaed by the grand jury investigating the capitol riot. abc's jay o'brien is here with more. jay, good morning. >> reporter: rhiannon, good morning. federal investigators are now expanding the pool of people they want to question as they investigate the january 6th

attack on the capitol. this morning, abc news confirms the fbi recently tried to interview a person currently in former president trump's inner circle. sources say william russell was not home when agents t his house to ask questioned related to the january 6th investigation. the 31-year-old was a special assistant to president trump in the white house. russell moved to florida when trump left office and still serves as one of his aides. meanwhile, former trump adviser steve bannon is expected to surrender to authorities in new york today where he faces new charges in connection with a group called we build the wall, which raised $25 million to build a section of president trump's border wall. much of that money coming from small donors who were told all of the funds would go toward the wall. >> a physical barrier on the southern border and support president trump and what president trump is trying to do. >> reporter: in a separate federal indictment, bannon was

accused of using some of the money for personal expenses. bannon never went to trial. trump pardoned him before leaving office, but that pardon does not apply to a state indictment. >> so, completely different government sovereign, federal case versus state. so there's no overlap there in terms of his liability. >> reporter: in response, a bannon spokesperson calls the new charges phony. rhiannon. >> jay, thank you. history was made at the white house yest e amas helped unveil their official portraits. the former president and first lady discussed what the two portraits represent to them. >> a girl like me, she was never supp jacqueline kennedy and dolly madison. she was never supposed to live in this house, and she definitely wasn't supposed to serve as first lady. >> when future generations walk these halls and look up at these portraits, i hope they get a

we're back with the big shades bandit striking again. police in texas say he's robbed three banks in the houston area since june. he earned the nickname due to his oversize sunglasses but did not wear them in the latest robbery. >> we're learning more about the man accused of killing a tennessee teacher who was out jogging. it come as women all across the country are speaking out about the danger they often face while

jogging alone. >> reporter: new details are emerging about the man accused of kidnapping and urd manying a memphis teacher and mother of two out for a morning jog. cleotha was arraigned wednesday in the death of eliza fletcher. he did not enter a plea. fletcher was jogging around 4:20 a.m. last friday when surveillance video showed a man jump out of this suv and force her inside. her body was found monday, a few miles away. >> we have no reason to think this was anything other than an isolated attack by a stranger. >> reporter: court records show henderson was released from prison four years earlier in a prior kidnapping case. and years before that conviction, he was convicted of rape. fletcher's murder has sparked an outcry from runners around the country, particularly females, speaking out about the safety of the sport they love. >> what is being taught to us is that it doesn't matter what time

of day you run. it doesn't matter what clothig you wear. we are still targets. >> reporter: the podcaster known as alley on the run saying this on instagram. this morning was the first morning in my 14 years as a runner that i was too afraid to get up and run in the dark. hundreds plan to gather in memphis tomorrow to finish eliza's run. she was kidnapped halfway through her ten-mile route. organizers say it will be a memory of fletcher and others who have suffered violence on runs like the 20-year-old student molly tibbetts. 30-year-old who was murdered while out for a run in queens, new york, in 2016, and 27-year-old vanessa who was running in massachusetts in 2016 before her body was found in the woods. as to why henderson was released four years early from his previous conviction, authorities say he was given credit for time served, and for participating in the prison's job program.

warrant on domestic violence, assault and weapons charges. police say they knocked for nearly ten minutes outside before entering and after arresting two others. they say they found lewis in his bed where they allegedly mistook a vape pen for a gun. lewis was placed in handcuffs and later died at the hospital. his mother said it took police more than six minutes to offer any first-aid. she wants to know why. >> there was no attempt to preserve his life. frisking him, hand cuffed, he should have been treated immediately in that room. not carried like an animal and dropped on the ground. >> she said police failed to tell her the details surrounding her son's death. she found out online. >> the news was released on the internet before i could get it. >> police have defended the split second decision they had to playing. the ohio department of criminal investigations is reviewing the shooting along with an
