concerned for the queen's health. we will have more on that this morning. reggie: we start here with the look at the forecast. >> good morning, everyone. it will be a little bit hotter compared to yesterday. excessive heat warning until 8:00 this evening for areas highlighted in the dark pink. temperatures near 110 degrees. that will continue through tomorrow night and parts of lake county and mendocino county. a high likelihood of some illnesses. there is also heat illness possible for areas highlighted in orange and heat advisory in effect until 8:00 p.m. for areas around the bay like santa cruz. highs today range from 70 in half moon bay up to 110 degrees in livermore. we will see a little bit of cooling for the coast and more

moderate cooling this weekend. reggie: thousands in the bay area waking up in the dark. the majority of those are in the south bay right now where we saw the bulk of those outages. there are not any times posted on when the power would get restored. you could check of the pg&e website to see if there are outages in or around your area. kumasi: the ninth day in a row a flex alert has been called. this one will be longer than the others we have seen. >> today's alert is set to last for seven hours from 3:00 in the afternoon until 10:00 at night. two hours longer than californians have asked -- been asked to conserve energy.

governor newsom said it has been unprecedented he things the more than 40 million californians -- thanks the more than 40 million californians for stepping up and conserving energy. the power grid is seeing a record demand for energy. if people don't continue to take these alerts seriously, rolling blackouts are a possibility. newsom is working on a plan to relieve stress on a grid in the long run. the legislature passed a $4.2 billion initiative for an initial -- 4000 megawatts to the grid for 2024. governor newsom: we hope it will be done. everybody has done a job getting us through this. we will do our part to make sure we never have to go through this again. that is continuing transition to battery storage, energy and backup supplies, strategic reserve.

reporter: here's what you could do right now to prepare for that flex alert. close your blinds and pull your curtains to cover the windows and keep out the sun. if you need to use major appliances, do it before 3:00 p.m. you could also precook your meals to keep your oven and stove from heating up your kitchen during the hottest part of the day. if you have an electric car, yet it charged before 3:00 p.m. if you are lucky enough to have air conditioning, prequel your home by setting it to 72 degrees. it is starting one hour earlier than usual. take some of these but -- precautions before 3:00. julian: for nearly a week, workers who spend most of their day outside have been braving the heat. delivery workers rushing against

buckingham palace is the queen is under medical supervision and doctors are "concerned," for her health. the 96-year-old monarch met with the new prime minister on tuesday. she looks fine, smiling, shaking hands. the queen has been having mobility issues. yesterday they canceled events so she could rest. we know the station outside her castle, prince charles has arrived, prince william is on the way along with other members of their own family. we will keep tracking this and let you know more details. kumasi: an armored truck guard is in critical condition. a robbery outside the kaiser hospital, the shooting happened just before noon yesterday. investigators believed the guard was walking back to the truck when the robber approached him. the crime may have been planned in advance. >> we don't know if he was

followed. i believe it may have been a robbery gone bad. i don't know if it happened before the shooting or if it happened after the robbery. they did leave with undisclosed amount of cash. kumasi: kaiser hospital staff treated the guard who was then taken to another hospital. that shooting lead to a temporary lockdown. emergency services were still available. a malfunctioning water spring machine may have sparked that large wildfire in system county. it is used to cool ash. the company that owns the machine says it is cooperating in the investigation and will provide up to $50 million for a community restoration fund. two women have been killed by this fire. it has burned 4000 acres and is 75% contained. julian: a wildfire near lake

tahoe exploded in size. michigan bluff is in the path of the mosquito fire that has burned more than 5700 acres. it has burned one structure and 1000 others are being threatened. the steep terrain is making it difficult for crews to attack the fire. it is currently 0% contained. kumasi: the obamas return to the white house. what they said at their portrait unveiling. julian: big reveals from apple, the upgrades coming to the iphone and apple watch. >> poor air quality for the inland east bay, santa clara, note the change tomorrow. air quality should be improving. we are also getting the sea breeze returning.

julian: happening today, transportation secretary pete buttigieg coming to the bay area. his visits include stops in oakland. his office wants to see major structure initiatives funded in part by the u.s. transferred -- department of transportation. this includes the town project centering around broadway and martin luther king jr. way. the goal is to improve infrastructure for people who can take the bus and connecting several oakland neighborhoods to the waterfront. kumasi: cancers in adults

these flex alerts and blackouts? we spoke with a professor, codirector of the davis energy economics program. >> unlike other products, if you have too much or not enough supply, the entire delivery mechanism could break down. instead of having 1% or 2% not being able to buy what they need, it could cause everyone in the state to lose power for extended periods of time. kumasi: the doctor says they're trying to make it a smaller problem instead of one that spirals out of control. julian: a local hospital lost power and its backup generators during the heat we've -- heatwave. what is the hospital saying about what happened? lena: parts of this major south bay hospital spent close to four hours in the dark on tuesday

evening, including their emergency room. this happened during a power outage in the middle of the heatwave. backup generators failed at the medical center center. the emergency department had to close trauma, heart attack, and ambulance arrivals. other patients had to be transferred. the other nine had to be moved to different parts of the hospital. tiffany chow describes health care workers jumping into action. >> as soon as i walked over to the icu, it was pitch black. everyone had their iphones out and little flashlights to check on people. normally the icu is full of beeping sounds and monitor sounds and a lot of sounds like that. it was just silent.

lena: hospital official said in part our emergency plans went into place immediately. patient safety was never compromised. officials say they were told the failure was caused by the initial outage. the hospital did not answer our questions about why its own generators failed. the doctor credited hospital staff for the team effort to maintain critical care during this very scary outage. she added that patient safety again was never compromised. kumasi: the new school year at the noe valley high school is not off to a good year after the hvac system failed to work properly. 16 teachers called in sick yesterday because of heat related issues. the school has experienced a faulty hvac system since it got installed in 2019. it is partially fixed at this point.
