i'm amidates. i'm larry beale. thanks for joining us. we have our own grizz. prime situation to talk about gruesome crime. in fact in san carlos a woman who was murdered right in the middle of laurel street, and the details are extremely disturbing. let's go live now to abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo amanda. what do we know right now? well, we know that in the last few minutes many residents are only beginning to arrive home only starting to learn about that horrific crime that took place just down the block from where we're standing right now sources. tell the i-teens dan noyes that a man beheaded a woman in the middle of the straight in the middle of the day in front of witnesses. we know that suspect has been arrested it all happened at around 11:50 this morning on laurel street near magnolia avenue, just a block off el camino the woman who was killed was a mother of two young children dan always learning only moments ago cps took custody of seven and one year old girls. we're told the victim was a woman in her 20s, and that she

reportedly got a temporary restraining order against the suspect the san mateo county sheriff's office says the two were in an ongoing relationship. we asked about any history of abuse and history of domestic violence a sheriff's lieutenant only confirming the man was known to law enforcement details surrounding what led up to the incident is unknown at this time. we're told officers were flagged down at magnolia and laurel by a witness for what the san mateo county sheriff's office says was a report of an assault in progress. they arrived within minutes and found an obviously deceased female in the street in that area. they began to work the scene and shortly thereafter the male suspect arrived back in the scene and was quickly detained by sheriff's deputies. he was later placed under arrest for homicide. we can confirm that a stabbing instrument was used in the commissioned the crime that weapon is still outstanding. officials only describing that weapon as a stabbing instrument.

48,000 megawatts. this is slightly below the projected forecast, which i got to say is a good sign. today's flex alert is the longest one we've had yet from three until 10 pm tonight so far conservation efforts have been working and so have the emergency alerts pg&e says they're planning on doing that again tonight if we don't meet our goal alerts have worked. has helped californians conserve energy because as soon as that emergency alert went out we were to california independent system operators website we can see the drop in energy use so we know californians are helping and they are preventing these rotating now, they just got to keep doing it again one more day from 3pm to 10 pm tonight. so how much longer are we in this? well calaiso says tomorrow. we'll again be another challenging day, especially as the mosquito fire burning near lake tahoe could impact transmission lines. it is possible. we could see another emergency alert upgraded from a level two to three this evening and if

when people coming on it's cal fires newest tool for fighting wildfires on the eastern edge of santa rosa and this the first time that we've had a crew stationed here in sonoma county since the early 90 is when the black mountain conservation camp was closed this former juvenile detention facility is now home to cal fires newest wildfire hand crew base two dozen firefighters will call it home until january thanks to new funding from the state lockers and they actually share some of the guys some of them don't the blue ridge crew is moving to sonoma county from vacaville firefighters. we'll be ready to go if a wildfire breaks out having them look here in sonoma county. it helps out the sonoma county side as well as faster response for getting hand cruise to fires throughout the unit. the fire station is opening during the hottest week in bay area history. yes, so this this heat wave that we're experiencing now as definitely not improved our situations the chief says moisture left in weeds and brush has been sucked dry by the

intense epic heat as crews enter. what's typically the most dangerous time for fire season, september and october the heat and the dry air has definitely made the fuels more receptive to rapid fire growth. scott hawk is doing they can't stop this fire. this fire station is located at the base of hood mountain scene of several intense wildfire battles like that glass fire where hundreds of homes were lost significant fire history behind us and this crew is now centrally located in the county to be able to address some of those strategic fuel breaks that we've been trying to bring online in the last several years. some of the firefighters from this new base are up in siskiyou county today helping fight fires there in between calls. the chief says they will be cutting new fire lines and trimming dry brush to better protect the syria a lot of folks who live around here are happy to have this new neighbor move in. live in sonoma county tonight,

i'm cornell bernard abc 7 news they are. thank you. well today is a historic day the end of the reign of queen elizabeth the second who at age 96? bills told at san francisco's grace cathedral the queen made only one visit to the bay area in her lifetime that was back in 1983 abc 7 news reporter loose peña talk to people who had the lucky opportunity to meet her and loses his joining us live now lose. yes, larry about 40 years ago 16 stanford university students had lunch with the queen when she visited california one of them was andrew messing he was just a sophomore then and today he's remembering that his story moment. it was 1983. this is footage of queen elizabeth ii and prince philip visiting california aside from meeting former president reagan on the list of people to meet

was also andrew messing a stanford university sophomore and i was one of the lucky students my colleague david louie captured the moment almost 40 years ago when andrew got ready to meet the queen here. he was in his dorm room preparing for that big moment. she had a wonderful way of putting you at ease. do you still talk about it to people around you that you met and had lunch with the queen? it does come up is that sometimes it's used as trivia as an icebreaker former. san francisco mayor. willie brown is also remembering queen elizabeth ii during her visit to california. she made a trip to sacramento brown was an assembly speaker then one of the highlights of my public career brown remembers the queens sense of humor. they're clearly and not been a real briefing by her staff people on. not sure or should not occur in that visit. i didn't know that you know that

certain side you should walk on and all those kinds of things. i had to wing it. she winged it as well at one point queen elizabeth the second left and one of brown's mistakes i had said to her that their 80 members. so she turned to me and she said which one of the members i said the one standing and she said they are all standard. and in san francisco's japan town here is a photograph from 1977 when she celebrated her 25th, silver jubilee the owner of crown and crumpet is also honoring the queen's legacy with afternoon tea and this is a tradition. the queen has done throughout her life. one of her favorite teas was black tea and today many are gathering to honor her memory drinking. her favorite team to the queen i'm from canada one of the commonwealth countries and we love our queen.

another oakland teacher recorded 85 degrees indoors. it's been a long unbearable week at those schools that never really needed air conditioning. it's 11:20 right now, and it's currently 80 degrees inside my classroom. here's video of her classroom as the little ones were lying on the carpet hotter temperatures have an adverse effect on learning and it's definitely hard for them to focus and and really concentrate and absorb the curriculum that i'm still trying to teach at pinole valley high school at least 21 staff members called in sick on wednesday when the air conditioning system fail to work properly, which has been an ongoing problem a teacher recorded the temperature inside a classroom 88.5 degrees. the problem has now been fixed right now. what we can do is we can do our best to plan for the next time that a big heat event like this happens according to a report by the center of where climate integrity called hotter days and

reduce fire dangers on their property, but it's what the new regulations don't do that is drawing controversy. john campo says he's done everything possible to reduce fire danger around his home in san rafael. he's followed the recommendation of the fire department and reduced his brush even put in a fire retardant roof. yet his insurance company told him it would not renew his fire insurance due to the high fire risk, you know ethic consumer. i just i feel betrayed. um by the insurance industry new regulations from insurance commissioner ricardo lara would mandate insurance companies give homeowners discounts for taking preventative measures. it would also require those companies to disclose your fire risk score and allow you to appeal that decision any bach of the consumer group united policyholders believes. the new regulations will lead to more renewals and lower prices. we don't want insurance

companies overcharging people, you know, if people have actually taken steps that makes them a better risk than then if the insurance company is charging in the same price that they were charging and before they made those improvements then they are collecting and excessive rate carmen ballber of consumer watchdog agrees at lower prices. it's a good thing and believes the regulations will do just that but she fears it does nothing to reduce non-renewal if i go to an insurance company and it refuses to sell insurance to me. it doesn't matter. what the price is i can't pay it. it's not available at any cost insurance companies declined to renew more than 200,000 homeowners in california over a one-year period in the latest figures available from the department of insurance. bach believes that's because the insurance companies are nervous about fire rest the only way to really get their confidence back in competing for to sell home

we've got you covered. like us pumpkins can get sunburned too and in heat like we've had lately they can turn to mush on the inside. so is there still hope for halloween abc 7 news reporter dustin dorsey explains what actually takes to keep those pumpkins pumpkins alive amid 100 degree temperatures. it may only be early september, but people are already getting excited for spooky season halloween is right around the corner hard to believe given this incredible heat wave. we've been having and just like us pumpkins aren't much fan of the hot weather either well pumpkins different because if it's sitting out there in the sun, there's just melts it burns one side and then after a couple weeks it'll just deteriorate, but gary tognetti and the team at spina farms in south san jose have been hard at work to make sure everyone gets their jack o'lanterns for halloween. this is their field of pumpkin spread out as far as the eye can see and the work to protect them from this heat.
