karina castro to understand what she went through and to help bring her children home. they were taken by social workers after the attack. i holding up danielle gannon met me outside her home in vallejo today. i'm actually interested in everything so sorry, she invited me to meet her son marty castro the father of the victim and yesterday's brutal sword attack karina castro. she was an amazing. woman very stubborn determined to raise her daughter's on her own. karina was 27 years old attended menlo atherton high school got her ged and worked as a doordash driver. she left behind seven-year-old and one year old girls. she had the youngest with a man now held for her murder 33 year old jose rafael solano lendetta, the family says he goes by the name rafa solano and that he didn't work. i found some rap songs. he posted on youtube.

domestic violence. you can find one by going to abc 7news.com/take action. all right in the east bay. we are learning new details about the tragic double murder of an east bay nurse and her husband all as the suspect and alameda county sheriff's office deputy made an appearance in court abc 7 news. anchor dion lem has the latest now from dublin. friday afternoon a pastor visited with surviving family members of maria and venison tran those working with the family say they are grief-stricken and devastated six people were asleep inside just after midnight wednesday when dublin police say alameda county sheriff's deputy devin williams entered the home and shot the married couple the commotion according to the alameda county sheriff's office woke the pairs 14 year old son who walked in on the crime in progress williams is described in court documents as having a relationship with 42 year old maria tran sources confirmed to me maria was separated from her husband. it appears in recent months

maria formed a relationship with williams based on their roles as nurse and law enforcement officer at the hospital where she worked family and friends have requested privacy during this time though the john george psychiatric hospital issued a statement describing maria in part as beloved and a brilliant and excellent nurse williams who made his first court appearance friday morning has been charged with two counts of murder with special circumstances in dublin dion lim, abc7 news. bart police just announced an arresting connection with a deadly stabbing above the 24th street mission station 42 year old richard henry viser is now in custody on august 28th surveillance cameras captured an argument between two men in the bart plaza and one stabbed the other the victim went down to the station and collapsed on the platform and died bart says he arrest demonstrates the effectiveness effectiveness of its network of cameras. happening right now. we are in the last few hours of that. dangerous heat wave we've endured and some relief is in fact already for some folks feel like we deserve it at this point

abc 7 news meteorologist and joins us live. roof with the latest sandia. yeah, dan and alma. it's been a week of this intense heat. we're done with it. there's a nice natural ac going out here up on the roof. let me show you the 24-hour temperature change down 20 degrees in hayward. it's 19 degrees cooler in san francisco. so certainly feeling it across parts of the bay area inland areas are still sizzling in triple digit heat 103 in brentwood fairfield 100 in livermore, but it is 64 degrees and half moon bay excessive heat warning still going for lake solano and mendocino counties until tonight. it is still hot out there the other big story we're following is the haze you have you noticed the air quality the lower levels. it's moderate right now, but it's worse near the mosquito fire in the sierra foothills where that fire is burning. we are seeing the haze air quality advisory was extended through tomorrow due to the wildfire smoke you will notice moderate air quality through the weekend and into tomorrow. look at the visible satellite

picture all of that smoke heading in our direction. the good news is it's in the for parts of the atmosphere not down near the ground amma. all right. thank you so much sandia right now for the 10th straight day of flex alert is in effect because of the strain on the state's power grid because of the heat abc 7 news. anchor karina. nova has been tracking the energy use and joins us live with to karina i'mma we all need a break at this point, but unfortunately, we're under a flex alert for a tenth day in a row californians being asked to conserve energy to avoid overextending the power grid. here's a look at today's outlook. the current demand does look much better than what we saw earlier in the week. but now cal iso says there are new concerns. the most extreme weather has slowly begun to change and now we're seeing significant escalation of wildfires. and and certainly what i think is now currently a tropical storm kay bringing a whole new set of challenges. kelly so says the storms and

southern california cloud cover and smoke from the mosquito fire will decrease our solar energy by about 40 to 60 percent. that's about 5 to 6,000 megawatts. again, that's why we're under another flex alert until 9 pm tonight. the goal is to get through this week with no major planned outages which so far we have been able to accomplish by the way. there are about 4,000 people without power right now in san ramon according to pg&e, but those outages they're not related to the mandating mandated rotating outages live in the newsroom karina, nova abc 7 news. all right, karina. thank you. and here's how you can help conserve energy until 9 o'clock tonight during this flex alert set your thermostat to 78 degrees or higher if you're health allows don't charge your electric car during those hours or use major appliances like your dishwasher washer and dryer or electric oven or stove and off any unnecessary lights. still ahead a class action lawsuit filed against the city and sheriff of san francisco the allegations of privacy rights

live there say, they need more time to move their belongings out. it's been a hectic week for people living at this encampment near monetta, san jose airport. the faa has ordered the city of san jose to shut it down roy who lives just outside of the area being swept has been trying to help his neighbors. i'm going now to tow another vehicle that that the city wants out of here the city plan for the camp to be cleared in sections between september 1st september 30th long before the heat wave was forecast. he did postpone the sweep for three days, but friday morning it picked back up advocate sean cart says those living at the encampment needed a longer break so over a hundred degrees people are just suffering and then starting up the very next day. nobody has recovered from this heat wave cartwright says not enough has been done to provide resources to those being displaced by the sweep. i know that people say that this was coming and that was totally true. but people also thought that they would be able to move into the vta lot at the same time. so the city knew this was coming

and they didn't coordinate and have the vta lot open for people to move into the city of san jose says they're still working to make that lot available. so there's there's still a process ongoing working with our partners to get to a place where there's a final agreement and and as many as 45 spaces that will be potentially available there despite those resources rudy ortega says the area for him has become home and he's not ready to leave. oh temporary purchase but cans and bottle collecting and cost me 15,000 dollars four years of saving. and been able to save up for that and i'm gonna lose it in one minute or take us as he's fired the temporary restraining order and injunction to be able to stay put i will kick and scream out of there despite that the city says it's under order to do the sweep the city of san jose is meeting a directive of the faa and doing so in a responsive way over 143 people have received housing at their temporary permanently over the last several months as for the others who live at and near the

encampment continuing to scramble some are still holding on to a sense of optimism. i'm hoping it something really comes out of all of this for all of us in san jose zach fuentes abc 7 news. the american civil liberties union has filed a class action lawsuit against san francisco and sheriff paul miyamoto. the suit says the sheriff went beyond constitutional bounds by requiring defendants freed under electronic monitoring to consent to require to consent to a search of their body home vehicle or possessions at any time. the sheriff's office sent us a statement saying the sheriff does not require electronically monitored inmates to wave any rights, but the court does and the sheriff's office enforces those rules and regulations still ahead school districts leaving hundreds of millions of dollars on the table. we'll tell you about the offer from the state that not all districts are taking advantage

that some school districts will eventually need to install more air conditioning systems because of rising temperatures sacramento. in fact has already started to give out some grants to repair and upgrade or even install new hvac systems, but abc 7 news senior education reporter liam melendez found some of that money is just sitting there. when the pandemic hit in 2020 most california schools were in dire need of better ventilation systems to improve air quality so they could safely reopen assembly member phil ting quickly introduced a legislation to help install and modernize

heating ventilation and air conditioning systems known as hvac. out with the hotter temperatures some school districts are realizing they may have to add more hvac systems. here's another need where schools could take a look at doing which is on top of ventilation. they could do air conditioning 600 million dollars for ventilation work over three years has been offered to school districts that apply. here's what some local districts have requested berkeley unified more than 447,000 alum rock union elementary school district in the south bay more than 1.2 million west contra costa unified more than two million and oakland unified more than five million oakland also asked for 1 million dollars for plumbing work because obviously districts have to have a plan around water filtration around ventilation before they could apply they can't just get the money and just say hey, we'll spend it when we feel like it perhaps that's why there's still roughly 200. million dollars available in the

pot the deadline to apply is october 31st of this year. there's money still available if they don't get it this round there's another round coming but adding hvac systems on older buildings represents a challenge for districts like san francisco unified matt. haney is a former school board member, especially with the heat that we're seeing right now. this has to move way up the list as a priority even though it's a bit challenging in some of these older buildings. it's something that has to get done. the money comes from the energy efficiency fund which rate payers already pay into which by the way continues to grow in san francisco leanne melendez abc 7 news. all right. let's go back and talk a little more about the weather and amma finally some relief. we have been counting down the days sandia. i know it has been such a long stretch of this heat wave. it's over after today. okay, that's the great news alma dan right now behind me. there is a tinge of haze in the air as the air quality is suffering because of the smoke

from the mosquito fire now, i do want to turn your attention to something pretty big which is tropical storm k lashing out at southern california. they're getting soaked with rain. they have flood watches there. they also have wind warnings there because tropical storm k will continue to impact them going into the weekend. it is packing 40 mile an hour winds and the track takes it away from the southern california coast over the next few days. it weekends pretty rapidly to a depression. but here's the deal. there's all this deep moisture that's got to go somewhere and it's gonna go into southern california like it is right now that's where the brunt of the rain is going to be. you will notice some areas there picking up. are from about one to two possibly isolated higher amounts one to two inches and higher sierra all the way up to the central coast looking at the possibility of some rain here in the bay area. we're also tracking the heat triple digits for one last day and then the seven day has no more triple digits, which is relief for all of us 60s co-side right now live views from our tower cameras. you can see the haziest view right now is from our emeryville

camera if you're getting out of town hawaiian airlines forecast. audi humid tomorrow's slight chance of an isolated shower too in the afternoon upper 70s to mid 80s as far as honolulu goes they're going to be some showers around 88 new york city mostly sunny 79 83 in chicago. they're looking at sunshine as well and then showers and thunder chants in la-86 degrees. so here's our view of san francisco. looking good tonight. hazy humid and coolers start to the weekend slight chance of showers were sprinkles not a game changer isolated thunder chance will be best around the central coast the smoke we're tracking it from the mosquito fire. you'll see that haze. it's just really right on through tomorrow and lingering into sunday, but the heaviest smoke will remain over the sierra nevada where that fire is burning. here's a look at the remnants of tropical storm k moving in our direction tomorrow night right around greenfield south of monterey. you will see some showers developing isolated possibility can't be ruled out here.
