good evening from london tonight. we're here at great britain begins a new chapter. the reign of king charles iii. as tributes pour in for queen elizabeth, her son stepping out for the first time as sovereign. but the monarchy he's inheriting is a different one than his mother ruled, challenging the relevancy of the crown. evening just three days after his mother did the same. the king candid about his own grief. >> what i've been dreading as i know a lot of people have. >> i actually think there is a time of great opportunity for the monarchy. because when people are feeling at their most vulnerable, they seek something constant and something stable. and that of course is what the monarchy is meant to give us. >> this moment something the former prince of wales has been preparing for his entire life. >> having served so long under his mother. >> reporter: in 1952 when charles was 3, his mother became queen. his destiny laid out before him. it was a difficult childhood as a young queen, his mother put duty and service above all else. >> one of the things he talks about is this memory of his mother coming to kiss him good night on the nursery floor

wearing the imperial state crown. >> in his 30s, the prince told barbara walters that at times he'd struggled in school. >> i think it's not too bad for people to know that the prince of wales can also fail in school and they give him a failing grade. >> oh, yes. i failed by exam three times. i got it on the fourth attempt. >> reporter: in 1964 he was crowned the prince of wales, but at the time most knew him as a playboy prince. >> he was referred to as action man i think in the '60s as he, like, flew planes or did helicopters or rode in jeeps. >> reporter: he became a helicopter pilot, joined the naval air squadron and took command of a naval mine hunter. he fell in love with camilla shand, but it wasn't meant to be then. she married andrew parker bowles instead while he was in the navy. finally, lady diana spencer seemed to be the perfect match.

>> that beautiful smile and manner suddenly we discovered that she was the apple of his eye. and before we knew it they got engaged. >> what was your instant impression? >> great fun and full of life and everything. >> pretty amazing. >> and i suppose in love. >> of course. >> whatever in love means. >> that tells you i think a little bit about maybe his upbringing, whatever love is from a grown man who's just gotten engaged. it's not the note you want to go out and pick your informal china pattern with. >> the night before his wedding, he really wasn't for sure whether he was in love with diana. >> reporter: 750 million people all around the world tuned into their wedding in 1981. >> so long as you both shall live. >> i will. >> but, as we all know, the fairytale had a nightmare ending. their divorce with allegations

of infidelity on both sides. and just a year later, diana's tragic death. >> funeral procession is on the south side of the park. >> reporter: charles became a single parent to two shattered boys. >> they are coping extraordinarily well, but obviously the loss and death has been an enormous loss as far as they're concerned. >> as years passed, charles began to gradually make his relationship with his longtime love camilla more public. the couple finally married in 2005. >> it might've been an affair that rocked the monarchy, but it resulted in an incredibly happy marriage. >> she's got a great sense of humor. she very much sees her role as supporting him. >> reporter: earlier this year a stunning development. queen elizabeth announced that her wish was for camilla to be

known as queen consort when charles became king. >> i think that camilla has had perhaps one of the most remarkable transformations in the eyes of the british public that we've seen for a long time. it is therefore a huge compliment to her hard work. >> in his speech today, the king recognizing his wife. >> i know she will bring to the demands of her new role the steadfast devotion to duty on which i have come to rely so much. >> at 73, charles will be the oldest person in british history to ever take the throne. but he's inheriting a commonwealth that looks far different than his mother's. >> king charles is inheriting a united kingdom that is much more spectacle of monarchy than it was when his mother ascended to the throne. there is renewed vigor from young people to really challenge their institutions. >> in order to move forward, he

of britain's foremost animal psychologists. the man brought in when queen elizabeth's corgis were being unruly. >> so she was quite a good trainer. but she came to you in a little bit of crisis. >> yeah. because of these fights and someone had been bitten in trying to interrupt a fight. a fight between two dogs is pretty scary. >> she had to have stitches because a corgi bit her at one point. >> i'm going to go and get something from my office which will demonstrate because we use an air horn to interrupt. so that breaks up -- they don't like the sound. how do you break up a dog fight without intervening physically? and this is how. >> you said that when you met with her, you spoke for a good deal of time. what was your impresson of her? >> her majesty with me found a very nervous. poor people, rich people, and everyone in between. but the queen of england was

something. she immediately put me at ease, asked me about my family, and was just so uneffected and nice. laughed at my bad jokes and cracked jokes herself. bang! [ laughter ] great for a james bond movie. >> she was very doggy and in the nicest possible way, and really lived and breathed dogs. >> her love affair with the breed began early. her father king george vi was fascinated with the unique breed. but it was susan who won elizabeth's heart, a gift from her father on her 18th birthday. >> it was a honeymoon present. what you can't see under the blanket is susan the corgi. she came too. i don't think prince philip was too happy about that, but it was non-negotiable. the korgi is coming on my

honeymoon. >> she would own more than 30 over the course of her reign. most descended from susan herself. >> her majesty was a real hands-on dog owner. she'd take at least three at a time walking them in the grounds. and of course in public areas, no security, just walking out onto windsor park. that was an unspoiled, unchallenged part of her life that took her away from the pressures of public life. and she would dress up in her outfit, which was a scary looking head scarf and an old coat just like all of we dog owners. i was at windsor castle and i saw her picking up her own dog's poop. >> she even had a special way of remembering them after their passing. >> there is a tradition in the royal family that when you move around, as they do, they've got several residences. when a dog dies, they're buried at that particular residence. and so in each of the royal houses, there are these rather sweet small pet cemeteries. and they have these little

headstones with the names of the dogs. >> the royal corgis even making a lasting mark in pop culture, making cameos in the 2012 olympics, and an animated film in 2019. >> a gift to the queen. >> the queen, a devoted patron of the royal society for the prevention of cruelty to animals. >> i've seen a few postings about how the animal world has lost one of its great champions. >> yeah. that's absolutely true. i mean, can you imagine a more stressful life than the queen had constantly dealing with derelict politicians of which we have too many in this country. we have our share. but constant pressure. and dogs are a good confidant. >> and they won't spill secrets. >> that's true. and, so, that relief of tension for psychologically very well adjusted person, which she is, was. but even the best of us, the strongest of us will have our
