in the next few hours. casey skies expected because of the fires, especially the mosquito fire. mid to upper 80's this afternoon around the bay. at thees mid 50's. we have more of a cooldown coming up next week and i will let you know about air quality as we track the fires throughout the day. amanda: the tribute illuminated new york city last night on the eve of the september 11 attacks in 2001. the beams of light are honoring those who died at the world trade center. in just a few minutes the names will be read aloud at the annual commemoration ceremony. at home, abc 7 news was outside oracle park where tribune is set up at the willie mays plaza. there's a giant american flag

that has the names of all of the american victims. this weekend will mark 21 years since terrorist hijacked three planes and changed our sense of security. the widower of one died aboard flight 93 has written a book that shares his long road battling depression and trauma. we sat down with him to share his story. [taps playing] >> the marker at the flight 93 memorial in union city is engraved. she was three months along one hijackers crashed the plane she was on into a field near shanksville, pennsylvania, killing 40 passengers and crew members. he decided he wanted to write a book dedicated to a boy or girl who would've been the couple's first child. >> i will never have full

closure. it is certainly a way to memorialize the unborn child. >> the book describes his years of depression and posttraumatic stress and the therapy that later enabled him to let go of his wife and child's ashes. >> i was holding onto them because it was the only tangible unborn child. it allowed me to release those ashes in a beautiful place. she wanted to let me know how much she loved me and how much she loved her family and she said goodbye. >> initially he was withdrawn but convinced go to a holiday party where he met actor sean penn, whose friendship was a turning point. >> john has a big heart and is very passionate man. everything he does is compassionate and it was more than evident by the way he treated me.

>> he is now remarried and she now wears a lauren's wedding ring that was at the jewelers. >> it comes when you least expect it but it is a beautiful thing. >> he hopes his book will help others deal with the sudden loss such as a loved one to covid and to deal with the generation lost because of an unexpected death. >> it is a generational book in a way because it is a love letter to the generation that would have been in their 20's now. >> including their unborn child. amanda: today you can find a collection of historic footage on our web and on our streaming tv app. friends and family gathered to remember karina castro last night.

loved ones trying to we get -- regain custody of her young girls. we were there and have the story. >> a father in pain, profoundly heartbroken by his daughter's death. in front of him, candles spell out what he and what so many others are struggling to come to terms with. loved ones, friends, neighbors remembered 27-year-old karina castro did many stunned by the gruesome killing in this quiet neighborhood thursday afternoon. >> everybody pulls together. whether you know them or not you feel for the family >> she was murdered in the middle of the street. she had her head cut off by a sword. the castro -- castro and the suspect were in an ongoing relationship and she had a restraining order against him.

the one-year-old and seven-year-old daughters were in the home at the time. the grandmother turned out to the vigil. >> i am trying to be strong and i want to support her and i want to get her children back there that is my goal here that is all i am concentrating on. >> i am going to be in every court, office and everything i can do. i will spend my life time to get them back. >> man accused of curdling castro is now in custody facing murder charges. many came to take a strong stand against domestic violence. this is her uncle. >> talk about domestic abuse and get out there and say something and lead them to the right places. her death perhaps a reason for more people to speak out or take action?

>> stop the violence. stop the violence. amanda: a man from merced and not -- arrested in newark in connection with an eight-year-old girl. he had been on the run and facing charges of murder and child abuse. she was found dead in the home that she shared with her mother he was arrested for murder days after the body was found in march. bail is expected to be set at $1 million. he will be booked into the merced county jail. a concertgoer speaking out after the actions of rockley and motley crew after the band's drummer asked people to expose themselves and some did in front of children. they have been attending concerts for years. they were in for a surprise as tommy they asked the crowd to

to stay on trails and adhere to safety signs. a war in ukraine update, ukrainian forces have retaken a strategically important city in eastern kharkiv region. russia said it is regrouping troops that has been going on for seven months. people gathered in san francisco to mark 200 days of the war. a vigil was held and people paid respects and remembered the soldiers, defenders and innocent civilians who have died in the conflict. >> i am glad the community gathered together to process the thoughts and our collective pain and trauma. my family is she in ukraine i am worried about them everyday and we try to live life one day at a

her body has not and found but her family picked up her car from police appeared they tell us it feels like they brought apart of her home. >>: this is the moment they were able to pick up their daughter's car which had been in police custody following the murder. her mother drove the car home. >> it hurts because instead of her that we are bringing home, it is just a car,. >> the fbi took car as part of a murder investigation. family is told it could be years who for they get the car back. >> it was her favorite thing in the world. she is always in that car. i am sure it first. is in that car. >> they believe she was killed

on january 26 by her boyfriend who lived in antioch. she was killed in june -- he was killed in june while trying to arrest him for murder. a reward was offered for information leading to alexis' whereabouts. on friday, her parents announced the reward is being offered to anyone who can help find her body. volunteers can sign up on the website. >> download the pdf of the timeline as well as the map. it tells them where to go. >> in august, a protest held at the district attorney's office demanding that charges be filed against jones' mother who they believe was involved. a meeting was finally held.

they say despite the overwhelming evidence, the da said it is not enough. >> one of the things they said is finding the body would mean a lot because we will be able to find out the manner that she was killed. was there a weapon used? so finding her body is also a big help in this case. >> her parents say they will continue the search until they bring her home. amanda: new covid-19 boosters rolling out across the bait area. they were recently greenlighted by the fda and cdc. they are targeting hyper infectious strains of the omicron variant that caused cases to search over the summer. cornell barnard reports from one of the vaccine clinics in the east bay. cornell: folks ready to roll

their sleeves for the covid-19 booster. >> we want to make sure everyone gets their booster and they are updated. cornell: the line was out the door for those offering boosters for the omicron variant. two months out from their last shot. this is a more focused and effective vaccine. if you don't want to get sick, take the vaccine and you lower your chances of getting sick. cornell: it comes as covid cases are plateauing but following a surge in the bay area. she wants to make sure she and her group are protected next week. >> i have a lot of family coming in and i want to make sure we can be as safe as possible during an event that is worse

the so-called mosquito fire burning east of forest hill threatening structures and power lines. fire ignited tuesday and has scorched more than 58 square miles. there is no containment and evacuations are in effect. also a closure of the pacific crest trail. increase wind has caused the fire to keep spreading significantly overnight. riverside county residents relieved as tropical storms rolled in saturday. this, after a dangerous heatwave and nearby wildfires. fairview fire burned more than 30,000 acres since monday. thousands of residents forced to evacuate. >> i have been worried about this whole thing. i am glad the rain came and hopefully more comes so the fire can actually be gone.

amanda: the fire is now 43% contained. calfire and oz reduced evacuation warnings from some residents. ance oward the bay bridge. the management district expecting moderate air quality for the next couple of days, although there is an air quality advisory in effect right now. i want to show you what is going on around the state, where we are seeing poor air quality are near the fire. that is where it is going to be tough, especially this weekend. you can see it with the forecast animation with the smoke. in the bay area, light blue, expecting hazy conditions. look at how bad it is in the

south lake tahoe and reno area. we will get an onshore flow and this will clear things in the bay area but there it is going to be thick and smoky even through tomorrow. we are expecting maybe slightly better air all the conditions tomorrow with the onshore flow and that will help push the smoke away and help cool things down for the bay area and you will see that trend into the. this afternoon, the sea breeze will pick up and temperatures will be similar to yesterday. e had trace amounts of rainfall yesterday we could see a little bit today, about a very slight chance. this is showing you downtown san francisco and the bay bridge. temperatures in the 60's and 70's. cloud cover ask like a blanket as we lose heat overnight.

oakland, 66. san jose, 71 degrees. from the east bay hills, a nice view across the bay. you can see the bay bridge in emeryville in the foreground. in santa rosa, 64. napa, fairfield, livermore, all in the mid-to upper 60's. downtown san francisco, gray skies ahead. it is going to be a bit hazy, humid. also a slight chance of sprinkles due to remnants of kay. we did not see too much in the bay area. cooler than average temperatures this week. here is a look at the forecast animation. clouds pushing through what we will get sunshine. depending on how much sunshine we get will affect our temperatures for f a hig of 74 n francisco.

oakland, 79. tonight, temperatures will drop into making an impact and spilling in from the coast. temperatures will be similar to yesterday. it could be warmer depending on how much sunshine we get in the afternoon. we will be under partly cloudy skies. for the rest of the week, a cooling trend, below average by wednesday because of the onshore flow. the onshore flow will give us the clearer and cooler air this week. amanda: after the week we had, clear and cool sounds so comfortable. just ahead, a leading cause of death for american children, gun violence. we look at what is being done in the bay area to keep kids safe.

been at the forefront of gun violence procedures. dustin dorsey explains how elected officials are calling for continued change. dustin: as schools continue across the bay area, covid remains an important focus of health and safety. after the mass in uvalde, texas, gun safety is at the top. >> when i reflect on my years at school, i wish to remember a place were my classmates and i could feel safe and learn. instead, i spent the past years watching gun violence devastate entire communities and watching our nation's leaders dismiss the importance of protecting us. >> gun violence and threats of gun mylan's -- gun violence undermines the since of security all students should have in their learning environment. dustin: california ranks number one in school shootings and is a

bigger issue nationwide. >> gun violence is now the leading cause of death for children in the united states of america. shame on us. dustin: overall, over 45,000 americans died from guns last year and leaders have seen enough. >> this is a national problem. >> we need to be smarter. dustin: congressional democrats staged events to call attention to the issue of gun violence and school safety. leaders have made steps from the gun violence insurance law into the safer communities act signed by joe biden this year but still admit more needs to be done, like in nationwide assault weapon ban. one congressman said change starts with loading. >> let's turn that around with our voices so the parents and grandparents of this country can stop worrying every day as

where the fairview fire is burning in southern california. the helicopter went down before 4:00 saturday afternoon. the fire department said the three people on board were sent to the hospital with moderate injuries. officials say it is unclear whether they were civilians our first responders assigned the fairview fire. an unexpected discovery at a goodwill store in kentucky has led to a nationwide search for relatives of a world war ii naval officer. letters written by robert ballantine were found in a box donated to the store which were written 80 years ago. both were written to an elizabeth smith in pennsylvania. >> i was glad to receive your letter. you will hear from me as soon as i have located someplace else which i hope is soon.

yours until i hit an oceanfront, bob. amanda: according to a news report, the inquirer published an obituary for him in 2002 and said he served in both europe and pacific during the war. gym memberships have seen a resurgence since instructions lifted by the industry still struggling to recover. a new survey found 50% of respondents returned to the gym within nine months of restrictions lifted but 27% say they don't have plans to return. 31% are working out fewer times at the gym this year. among the decisions for the november ballot we -- will be proposition 30 which could give subsidies for electric vehicles. the democratic party supports it but governor newsom does not. liz kreutz explains why and what you need to know. >> -- liz: the question is at

the heart of proposition 30 which would increase tax on people make it more than $2 million by 1.75%. the revenue would go towards funding electric vehicles, charging stations, and other infrastructure as well as wildfire prevention. >> it will accelerate the transition to clean vehicles and will make ev's assessable to all californians. liz: he is at the think tank which is supporting the measure. he said the tax is necessary if californians want to hit the climate goals, including banning vast -- gas powered cars. >> we need funding to get to grips with the air pollution and climate in the state. liz: it is backed by the california democratic party, and the biggest financial contributor is lyft. the group involvement has

created a split among democrats. governor gavin newsom is against the measure did and a statement the governor said, prop 30 is a special interest carveout, a scheme devised by a single corporation to funnel state income tax revenue to their company. >> is not a question of whether they should. -- pay their fair share but the question is should it be going to light at. liz: he said it is a ploy by cash to lida -- to lyft. >> there are a lot of priorities and we can't go to the ballot every time to raise taxes for one company as opposed to the whole state. liz: lyft said the recent heat wave is a reminder of how urgent it is to address the climate change crisis. some say it would help fund the climate goals.

california political polls say there is more hind it. >> the point has been made this is the same governor who is touting his order requiring all new cars sold in california to be at zero or low emission by 2035. but my understanding is there is a broader reluctance by the governor to look to tax increases right now, particularly given inflation and some of the recession warning signs we have seen on the horizon. amanda: coming up, the biggest weekend in the world. at least for disney. we have a look at the festivities from the d 23 expo in southern california. here is a live look from our roof camera. cooler and comfortable.

memorial in new york city. phil, what is the atmosphere like there, especially as we just heard that moment of silence? >> reporter: right, janai. that moment of silence is always, that first of six moments of silence, always very emotional. ag as you mentioned today is the 21st time this nation will mark the deadliest terror attack on u.s. soil. memorials across the country but major ceremonies here at ground zero, at shanksville, pennsylvania, and washington, d.c. at the pentagon. the ceremony here as you s just began now. the names of nearly 3,000 -- c, first responders, and all those, who fought to protect our nation.

amanda: welcome back. let's get a look at the weather. frances: here is a look at live doppler 7. we have a lot more cloud cover, extensive this morning, picking up a few radar returns but no rainfall. there is still a slight chance. we had trace amounts in the east bay. nothing measurable in san francisco. temperatures in the 60's and even 70's. brentwood, 71. san ramon and morgan hill at 70 degrees. most of us in the 60's. from the exploratorium, we can see the downtown area. it is going to be hazy and humid today because of the fires and also there is still the slight chance of sprinkles we are keeping an eye on.

showers possible along the coast. it does not look like it will come north. cooler than average midweek attempt just will start to tumble. here is a look at the air quality. it has been good to moderate around the bay area. it will be bad in the late tahoe area because of the mosquito fire. this is where we see the thickest smoke from the fire. in the bay area, hazy conditions. the sea breeze will kick in starting tomorrow that is when we will see cooler, cleaner air and the cooldown continues with us till wednesday. up in the sierra is where the smoke will drift and push out east and be bad there for a while. highs today will be close to yesterday's numbers. oakland, 79, san jose, 85 degrees. temperatures coming into the upper 80's and we might hit 92 in ukiah.
