san francisco has written a book that shares his road battling depression and trauma. we sat down with him to share his story. ♪ reporter: the granite marker has the name of a woman and an unborn child. she was three months pregnant when the plane was crushed into a field, killing 40 passengers and crew members. her husband decided he wanted to write a book dedicated to the boy or girl who would have been their first child. >> i will never have closure. i will always have the scar on my heart. it is a way for me to do something to memorialize the unborn child. reporter: the book describes his years of depression and ptsd, then the therapy that later enabled him to let go of his

wife and child ashes. >> i was holding onto them, it was the only tangible dna i had of the unborn child. it allowed me to release those ashes in a beautiful place. she wanted to make sure i let her family know how much you love them. she said goodbye. reporter: initially, he says he was withdrawn then convinced to go to a holiday party, where he met sean penn, whose friendship was a turning point. >> he has a big heart. he is a passionate man and everything that he does. quite intelligent. his compassion is more than evident by the way he treated me. reporter: today, he is remarried , she wears lawrence wedding ring was at the jewelers on -- lauren's wedding ring, which was at the jewelers on 9/11. reporter: it -- >> it comes to you in the moment

are still struggling to come to terms with. on this saturday night, loved ones, friends and neighbors came to remember 20 seven-year-old karina castro. many of them are stunned by the gruesome killing in this quiet neighborhood. >> everybody pulls together, whether you know them or not. you feel for the family. reporter: castro was murdered in the middle of the street. she had her head cut off by a sword. authorities say castro and the suspect were in an ongoing relationship. she had a restraining order against him since april. on thursday, cps took custody of her daughters. the one-year-old and seven-year-old girls were in the home at the time. her grandmother turned out to the vigil. >> i am trying to be strong for karina. i want to support her in make her proud. i want to get her children back. that is my goal, that is all i am concentrating on. >> i'm going to be in court,

every office. everything i can possibly do. i will spend my life time to get them back. reporter: the 33-year-old man accused of murdering castro is now in custody, facing murder charges. many people out here came to support katrina castro and her family, and they came to take a strong stand against the mystic violence. eric drains -- james is her uncle. >> talk about domestic violence and do not be afraid to say something. help them, give them information, leave them to the right places. reporter: her death perhaps the reason for more people to speak out or take action. >> stop the violence. stop the violence. reporter: abc7news. amanda: a man was arrested yesterday in connection to the death of an eight-year-old girl. donte jackson had been on the run for six months and is facing charges of murder in child

abuse. an eight-year-old was found dead in the home he shared with her mother. jackson's veils expected to be set at $1 million, he will be booked into the merced county jail. only on abc seven, a concertgoer is speaking out against the actions of motley crew after the band's drummer asked attendees to expose themselves. some did, in front of children. they have been attending concerts since they were kids. they attended the motley crew show at oracle park wednesday. they ran for quite a surprise as a founding member asked the crowd to expose their genitals. alvarez was shocked and said it was traumatizing to see so many people partaking. >> miners and everybody was forced to see various people nude on the big screen. everyone around us was doing it, too. it was crazy.

it is against the law to expose yourself in front of kids or anybody. especially in front of 30,000 people. amanda: we reached out to a spokesperson, who confirmed there have been several complaints and expressed their concern to promoters. the giant staff was not involved and show production. alvarez plans to file a police report with sfpd for indecent exposure and has no plans to return to a motley crew show. one person was rescued saturday morning from a cliff at san francisco's china beach. the fire department tweeted these pictures. they say the person was evaluated by medics, but did not give details on injuries. the fire department also tweeted a reminder to stay on trails ended here to safety signs. new development in the war in ukraine. we want to get to that story. a military source tells abc news ukrainian forces have retaken a strategically important city in the eastern kharkiv region.

months since alexis gave was killed. her body has not been found but her family picked up her car. they say it feels like they have brought a part of her home. reporter: this is the moment they were able to pick up their daughter's car, which had been in police custody following her murder. her mother drove the car home. >> it hurts, because instead of her we are bringing home, it is just a car. reporter: the fbi took the car as part of the murder investigation. the family was told it could be years before they get a car back, if at all. >> it is alexis' favorite thing in the world. she is always in that car. i am pretty sure her spirit is in the car. reporter: police believe the

24-year-old was killed january 26 by her boyfriend, marshall jones, who lived in antioch. jones was killed in june and a confrontation with seattle area officers all trying to arrest him for murder. $100,000 reward was offered for information leading to her whereabouts, but her body has not been found. on friday, her parents announced the reward is being offered to anyone who can help find her body. volunteers can sign up on the website. >> download the pdf of the timeline and the map marshall jones created. it pretty much tells them where to go. reporter: in august, protest was held at the contra costa county district attorney's office demanding charges be filed against jones'mother, who they believe was involved. they held a meeting with the das office, but they say despite the

overwhelming evidence, the da says it is still not enough. >> one of the things they are saying is, finding her body would mean a lot. we are going to be able to find out in the manner she was killed. was there a weapon used? finding her body is a big help in this case, with the mother as well. reporter: her parents say they will continue the search until they bring her home. >> it is not over yet. amanda: new covid-19 boosters are rolling out across the bay area this weekend. shots were recently greenlighted by the fda and cdc, they are targeting hyper infectious strains of the omicron variant that caused covid cases to surge over the summer. we report from one of the local vaccine clinics in the east bay. reporter: folks in richmond ready to roll up their sleeves

it ignited tuesday and scorched more than 58 square miles. there is no containment, evacuations are in effect for several communities. flames forced the closure of more than a mile of the pacific crest trail. increased winds have caused the fire to keep spreading significant overnight. frances is checking the forecast and air quality. frances: there is an air quality advisor in effect, no spare the air alert or anything like that. we will see hazy skies over the bay area as you can see live at the shop from emeryville looking for the bay bridge. they are quality management district is forecasting moderate air quality for the next few days, today and tomorrow. moderate air quality around that they, even good in santa rosa. the real concern is the poor air quality in the grass valley, carson city area, near the mosquito fire. i want to shady smoke forecast

roku and other devices. developing news, police are investing in a burglary that occurred at congresswoman karen bass at congresswoman karen bass it's on friday night. two firearms were stolen. no other belongings or money were taken. the burglary suspect was caught on surveillance. three people were hurt after a helicopter crashed north of where the fairview fire is burning in southern california. the helicopter went down just before 4:00 saturday afternoon. the fire departments is the three people on board were sent to the hospital with moderate injuries. officials say it is unclear if the people on board were civilians or first responders assigned to the fairview fire. an unexpected discovery at a goodwill store in kentucky has led to a nationwide search for relatives of a world war ii naval officer. letters written by robert valentine nearly 80 years ago were found last week and in a box among items donated to the store.

31% are working out fewer times at the gym this year. along decisions to make on the november ballot will be proposition 30, a measure that could help californians subsidies for electric vehicles. the state democratic party supports it, but governor newsom does not. this quite explains why, and what you need to know about it. reporter: should taxes be raised on the wealthiest californians in order to fund new climate projects? that is the question at the heart of proposition 30. it would increase the tax on people making more than $2 million by 1.75%. the revenue would go toward funding electric vehicles, charging stations and other infrastructure, as well as wildfire prevention. >> it is fully funding existing state programs that accelerate the transition to clean vehicles. they are making ev's accessible to all californians. reporter: he is the chief of policy at the bay area think tank, which is supporting the measure.

he says the taxes necessary if californians want to hit climate goals, including banning gas powered cars by 2035. >> we need long-term, stable funding to get to grips with air pollution and i'm in the state. reporter: the measure is backed by the california democratic party. the biggest financial contributor is lyft, they have poured in million dollars. it has created a split among democrats. gavin newsom is against the measure. in a statement, he said prop 30 is a special interest senegal's -- cynical scheme. >> it is not a question of whether the rich should pay their fair share. the question is, should the money be going to lyft. reporter: he says the measure is a get taxpayers to help meet the state mandate to electrify their vehicle fleet. he also argues the state has already given huge investments

to similar climate initiatives and the measure is too limited. >> there are a lot of priorities, we cannot be going to the ballot every time to raise taxes for one company as opposed to the whole state. reporter: they said environmental groups approach them about partnering on the measure, the recent heat wave is a reminder of how urgent it is to address the climate crisis. the governor's opposition has puzzled some supporters, who say it would help fund his climate goals. a california political reporter says it could be more behind his thoughts opposition. >> the point has been made this is the same governor who is touting his order requiring all new cars sold in california to be zero or low admission by 2035. my understanding is there is a broader reluctance by the governor to look to tax increases, particularly given inflation and recession warning signs. amanda: still ahead, the biggest
