then in scotland, the royal mile. >> king charles left for scotland and joined the ceremony. amy starts us off. >> reporter: the queen's coffin is in edinboro this morning. it will take to london. king charles and other members of the royal family will be spending the evening here as scotland says farewell to the queen. this morning newly declared king charles and his wife queen camilla heading back to scotland to honor his mother, after meeting with both houses of parliament. parliament expressing their condolences for queen elizabeth. >> i cannot help but feel the weight of history, which surrounds us. >> reporter: the queen's coffin leaving her beloved balmoral through scotland. mourners packing city streets

and rural tsafa doareh made of flowers from the queen's estate. as the herself arrived at holyroodhouse, princess ann showing respect for her mother with a curtsey. the new queen was proclaimed monarch. >> i'm aware of this great inheritance and the duties and heavy responsibilities of sovereignty, which have now passed to me. >> reporter: following the ceremony, this moment of unity. prince william and princess kate seen with harry and meghan at windsor castle. >> thank you so much. thank you, ever.

>> reporter: the couples together again publicly for the first time in more than two years. >> the moment was very important because it's what everybody wanted to see. there has been so much talk about this rift, they're never going to heal it. it was detracting from the queen's death and the mourning. it was prince william that put out the olive branch to harry. it was a good first move. does it mean this is over, this rift between them, this tension? we have to wait and see. >> reporter: prince harry releasing a statement saying i am grateful for all our first meetings, from my earliest childhood memories, to the first moment you met my darling wife and hugged your great grandc grandchildren. the queen's coffin will lay in rest for 24 in scotland.

t.j., you and i loved watching little prince louis interact with his great grandma. what he said is also just so beautiful. he said at least granny is with great grandpa now. >> what we know of his personality, that sounds like prince louis. people are gathering at buckingham palace as well. ian pannell is there where people are paying their respects. ian, good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, t.j. that's right. i mean an incredible turn-out as it has been over the last few days. we're seeing thousands and thousands of people here. possibly even more. they're laying down flowers. some of them brought flags from around the world. charles mingling with the crowd over the weekend. the queen is the hardest footsteps to follow.

the king appearing to wave at a servant to clear his desk was shown over the weekend. he's going to have to work hard to gain public support. britain has changed so much since his mother was core nated. >> a lot of people saw that and thought it was not a good look for him. the coffin will be moved to london. they're expecting incredible crowds over the next couple days. >> reporter: yeah. we should brace ourselves. there could be unprecedented scenes in london. tomorrow the coffin will be flown to london and arrive nearby buckingham palace. friday it moves to buckingham palace and the public will be able to file pass the coffin 24

hours a day until the funeral. the numbers will stretch beyond the tens of thousands. the government is warning people they should be prepared to stand in line, to have to move all the way through the night. lots of dignitaries arriving, including president biden. >> a lot of people willing to make that wait. robin? we're now joined by london allistair bruce. i don't have to tell you processions are precarious moments. how is king charles handling this? >> well, it's always planned, the nature of the nation is that as a monarchy it prepares for when the monarch will die and next one takes over. we judge our entire history through the reigns of our different monarchs. the constitutional process of

automatic on the one hand, so formal on the other. yet, we make sure it is evidently delivered through a ceremonial clarity that conveys both the carrying on and also the history that comes with it. it gives a sense of weight as to who the head of state is. when we saw the king come here behind me into westminster, a building that goes back to the 1100s and dedicates himself in answers to addresses of loyalty from the house of commons and the house of lords, our house of representatives and senate, you get a sense the succession has happened. >> what is the royal's family place within british society and how they remain important to the citizens there? >> the royal family is nearly the family around the king or

the sovereign of the day. and because of the family advantages, they're able to reach out where the king himself can't and to do other things. and to lead and head other elements of national life that the king cannot himself do. so actually it's very effective. now i think the nation has a very wide range of views about the family itself. there are some within the organization that other people liken and other people don't like. and i think that doesn't really matter. families are families. but at the same time, the monarchy sometimes provides the united kingdom with an organization to moan about. we're well-known around the world in the united kingdom for moaning about the weather. it doesn't mean we don't want it. and when we're moaning about the royal family, it doesn't mean we don't want them. we recognize the support of the king, the new head of state, and we offer him the loyalty that is expected, but at the same time, we're a pretty direct lot. >> yes, indeed. and a final question.

her majesty's queen coffin is in scotland before traveling to london on tuesday. what was her relationship, very special relationship that she had to the people there in scotland? can you tell us more about that? >> her mom was a scot and in fact when she was conveyed from balmoral castle she went to the castle where her mother was brought up. so she was given every element of scottish life as a child. i think she felt scots almost more than anything else. that's where she was happiest. but the nation responds to the queen because she was with us for so long. and she was so consistent and steady. and i think over time you do gain more and more love for people who live in your life and who are part of your family and she was part of our national family for a long time. because she never put a foot wrong, because she was always kind, selfless, and courteous,

she earned an enormous amount of love. i think we're seeing that pass by nature to her son today and we'll see how he carries the great burden of responsibility forward. >> we will see. alastair bruce, thank you so much. i know it's an emotional time. >> thank you. >> we appreciate your perspective. you take care. we'll have more on the royal family with a close adviser to the king coming up. george? now we go to what could be a major turning point in the ukraine war. ukrainian forces retook significant territory from retreating russian forces in ukraine's east this weekend. russia now retaliating with new attacks on critical infrastructure and power grids. tom soufi burridge is live in ukraine. good morning, tom. >> reporter: good morning, george. yeah, that lightning advance by the ukrainian forces continued overnight. troops also now pushing right up to the border with russia. and this morning a stunning admission from moscow that it has lost almost the entire

kharkiv region in a matter of days. this morning, ukrainian forces marking massive victories in the northeast. their troops now controlling the strategic military hub which was occupied by russian forces for months. now video circulating online show abandoned russian tanks and military equipment littering the area. ukrainian soldiers raising their flag once again over the city. it's a massive blow for putin. across a large sway of territory, troops liberating dozens of towns and villages in video released by the ukrainian military. emotional scenes, civilians greeting and embracing ukrainian troops. in this map, you can see the amount of ground that ukrainian forces have retain in blue near the city of kharkiv. officials say they have reclaimed more than a thousand square miles. president zelenskyy praising his soldiers, saying, everyone sees and notes your actions in the north, south, and east of ukraine.

the world is impressed. the enemy is panicking. ukraine is proud. the russian military retaliating with russian missiles attacking infrastructure. backing the military and key to the success, a vast army of volunteers. here making them clothing and kits. mechanics turning civilian cars into military vehicles, and these volunteers making plastic artillery pieces from a distance, realistic replicas. they're decoys to dupe the russians. this morning the ukrainians claim they are also making progress in the south and on the offensive in the eastern donbas. the ukrainians are on a roll and there's no doubt that u.s. weaponry and intelligence have made this possible. george? >> okay, tom, thank you very much. let's bring in our military analyst steve ganyard. is this a major tipping point in the war? >> it is, george. as we have been talking about for weeks, if not, months, this has just been a static

battlefield where it's been attrition and each side is trying to wear down the other side. this is a stunning breakthrough for the ukrainians in the north. all that territory that tom talked about, 1,200 square miles pushing 40 to 50 miles into what used to be russian held territory. the retreat we saw was not a retreat. it was a panicked run away. you saw all that gear by the side of the road that the russians just abandoned. so a stunning turn of events, but it's still just in the northeast. it is fairly static in the front and south. >> why are they able to do it? what does it mean for the future? >> obviously, u.s. help and the u.s. technology has been -- has played a key role. the u.s. has been able to provide those things that exploit the weaknesses and the russian military. most importantly has been the will of the ukrainian people, the will of the ukrainian military. napoleon said success in war is a quarter physical and three quarters will.

what we have seen is a triumph of will on the ukrainian side and a loss of will on the russian side. we're hearing reports of the russians abandoning and not fighting, threatening to walk away from their positions and there is even reports now of the units in the south negotiating surrender with the ukrainians. so the ukrainians remain triumphant and strong. and the russian will seems to be weakening. >> how much has this hurt putin at home? >> a lot, but we'll see how far it goes. there is still not an admission of how badly the things have been going in the northeast. he is now in a position where his own personal future is in jeopardy if he can't hold the line going into the winter season. >> steve ganyard, thank you. robin? we're going to turn now to the nfl back in action over the

weekend. last night tom brady taking the field like he never left. janai norman is in seattle where monday night football kicks off tonight. good morning, janai. >> reporter: good morning, robin. yeah, tom brady's requirement and then un-retirement was the talk of the off season in the nfl, but it didn't seem to bother him much at all. the 45-year-old making history, taking the field last night -- just by taking the field last night, becoming the first quarterback in nfl history to start a game at that ripe old age and he looked pretty good for 45. some would say for even 35. throwing for 212 yards, including this five-yard touchdown to mike evans in the third quarter. enough to lead the bucs to a victory over the cowboys with tampa's defense limiting dallas to just 3 points. how about them cowboys? and now all eyes turn to monday night football and another star quarterback russell wilson making his return right here in seattle to take on his old team now as a member of the denver broncos. wilson was traded to denver in a blockbuster deal in the off season after a decade with the seahawks leading the franchise to its only super bowl title. so the 53rd season of monday

dachshund farland and that is it. to -- and look mcfarland, and that is it. announcer: building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. reggie: breaking news, one officer is in the hospital after getting hit by a car on greenwich street. it happened during a catalytic converter theft investigation. apparently the suspects were in the process of stealing a catalytic converter. police try to stop them. the suspects took off and hit at least one officer as they were trying to get a way. police say the suspects crashed into an 18 wheeler and struck two suvs. they received minor injuries.

passing, deborah roberts sat down with someone very close to king charles talking about everything from his work ethic to queen camilla and his role as a father. gentlem she joins us now from buckingham palace with more. good morning, deb. >> reporter: good morning, robin. he is one of the very few people who truly knows the man who is sitting on the throne for more than a decade, patty harvevson was the eyes and ears for the mn behind the scenes for the prince of wales. he came in with an outsider's energy with the whole idea of revealing to the world his passions, sense of humor and his concern for the environment. so now that his old boss is now king, he wants the world to know he's more than ready to lead. >> as the queen herself did with such unwavering devotion -- >> reporter: when the new king charles gave his first speech after his mother's death, one man was following each and every word. >> i can see it in his face and hear it in his voice, the pain and the grief. >> how did he do in that speech? >> i, too, now solemnly pledge myself --

isn't working. >> if the queen's mantra was all about duty and diligence and responsibility, here in 2022, what is this king's mantra? >> his job is to follow the examples set by his mother. i never met anyone who has a deeper understanding of self. he is very, very thoughtful person. and he has deeply held views. he'll do it his way. >> reporter: he joined the then-prince of wales in 2004 as a top pr force during a tough time. princess diana died seven years earlier and charles was struggling to shake off negative press while making a new life with his old love, camilla parker bowles who was less than popular. >> will people accept her as queen and be able to separate her from their thoughts about her as the other woman who came and ruined this fairytale marriage? >> yes, absolutely. they've been married for 17 years now. she has been by his side working diligently, supporting him but also pursuing her own causes and quite challenging ones. there is no issue around that. she will be a popular queen. >> what is it that camilla brings to him and what is it that she's going to be able to do to help him in these duties as king?

>> you know, they love each other. she is a source of great support and comfort and love. they share the same sense of humor. they just blend together beautifully. >> reporter: in his new role, king charles is already seemingly focused on restoring peace between his two sons, william and harry, after a very public rift drove them apart. saturday, the brothers surprised many joining forces with their spouses to greet mourners outside windsor castle. >> how he is going to handle this discord, do you think? >> he's a father with two sons. i think he'll do it full of love and patience. i think this week will probably be the start of a healing period. i would hope so. he'll do whatever he can as a father to, you know, to bring his sons together. >> reporter: that healing process he cautions is probably going to be slow going. and as for that viral moment that many see as a embarrassing p ali for the new ng

mas gevg and intense pressure. he would advise he just ignore the noise and just be himself which might be another way, robin, of saying keep calm and carry on. >> i knew that was coming. did he reveal anything that might surprise us about the new king, deb? >> reporter: he was really forthcoming. he says charles shares that wicked sense of humor his mother had, loves to laugh at things when they go wrong. he says that he is a workaholic. somebody who just from morning until night, blows through lunch and believes in writing personal letters. a lot of people wouldn't know this. especially to people who are in the military. he will write personal letters. and he says that he is a man who really likes to connect with people. as far as people questioning the relevance of monarchy, charles is ready to have the conversations. he is a man who is in tune and likes to talk, so much so that they had to yank him sometimes off the line because he was talking with people so much. we'll see how it all goes. >> a lot of eyes on him. deb, thanks so much. and coming up, the former federal prosecutor says he was

trump and allies pressuring you to protect his friends and prosecute his enemies. have you ever seen anything like that before? how did it play out? >> i had never seen anything like that before. and i was, you know, junior prosecutor in the southern district in the early '90s and never seen anything like that. people had been in the office for 40 years never saw anything like that. it was unprecedented and scary. >> let's talk about the specifics. you talk about an effort by the president's allies and the justice department to get you to indict greg craig, a democrat who worked for president obama. talk about what happened. >> we were investigating greg craig and were pushed by the justice department to indict greg craig, a democrat, before the midterm elections. the justice department told us, hey, you have just indicted two allies of the president, chris collins, who is a republican congressman from upstate new york, and michael cohen, the

president's, lawyer, and fixer and it's time for you guys to even things out and indict a democrat before the midterm election. >> you talk about a justice department official, edward o' callahan. he says this is false. >> well, it absolutely happened. my deputy was on the phone with him when i was told you have to even things out. he immediately came into my office, told me about the conversation. my jaw dropped. and i immediately grabbed my deputy audrey strauss and brought her into the room. my deputy repeated the conversation and she nearly hit the ceiling. it was something we never heard or seen before. >> you refuse to indict him. greg craig was indicted and went to the washington district, u.s. attorney's office. eventually he came to trial and was acquitted, i think, within five hours. vindication? >> it was vindication, but the case should never have been brought. i was on the phone with the u.s. attorney from the district of colombia trying to convince her not to indict greg craig.

the case was too weak to be brought and inappropriate to be brought. that's what the trial showed. >> you also talk about an effort to get you to prosecute the former secretary of state, john kerry. >> yeah. that was truly outrageous. president trump attacks john kerry in two tweets saying that kerry engaged in possible illegal conversations with iranian officials regarding the iran nuclear deal. the very next day, the trump justice department refers the john kerry criminal case to the southern district of new york. two tweets by the president and the john kerry criminal case becomes a priority for the department of justice. the statute they wanted us to use was enacted in 1799 and had never been successfully prosecuted. so in about 220 years this criminal statute was on the books. there were no convictions. >> your office also prosecuted michael cohen, of course, president trump's former lawyer.

how did the president's allies get involved in that case? >> a couple different ways. the first instance on the eve of cohen's guilty plea, main justice tried to get our office to remove any reference to individual one who was president trump. they were unsuccessful in that venture. they were unsuccessful in every attempt to politically interfere with our office. we held the line in every instance. >> i never understood if president trump is individual one in that case, which we know that he is, if he was directing michael cohen to violate the law, how come he wasn't prosecuted? >> well, the decision to prosecute is a very complex one. it depends -- evidence against one individual doesn't necessarily apply as equally against another person. and so, you know, it's a complex situation. no charges were ever brought against anyone but michael cohen in that case. >> as i said, the details you

have here are pretty stunning. before you were fired, you appeared before congress and refused to take on this question of political interference. why not then? why now? >> well, when i was fired, i did not go quietly. it was about as noisy a departure from the department of justice you could have. i issued a press release to the country saying exactly what bill barr had done and how bill barr crossed the line. i used the language of the obstruction of justice statute. and in my testimony before congress, president and former justice department employees are restricted by what they can say. so the ethics office and the southern district of new york and the ethics office at main justice allowed me to testify but didn't allow me to discuss any pending case. >> finally, you know, merrick garland is facing a lot of complicated decisions whether to prosecute former president trump for january 6th and the holding of records down in mar-a-lago. how strong is that case? how should merrick garland

handle it? >> it was an extraordinary revelation by the department of justice that donald trump and those around donald trump were being criminally investigated not just for the mishandling of classified documents, but for obstruction of the subpoena requiring production of the classified documents. that is a very, very serious charge. if the southern district of new york had that charge, it would have our highest priority and we would be moving on it very quickly. you can see in all of the department of justice's filings in that case, there is an urgency to move forward. i can see that and i believe it's entirely justified given seriousness of the crime. >> geoffrey berman, thank you. ♪ we're back now with our "gma" cover story. before the u.s. open started two weeks ago, only the most avid tennis fans knew the name frances tiafoe. now he is pretty much a household name. he made it all wait to the semifinals losing a five tough sets to the eventual champion carlos alcaraz. frances joins us now. get us straight. it is tiafoe, tiafoe. which one is it? i heard you say tiafoe. >> yes, it's tiafoe. >> okay. can i just say, thank you. the excitement that you brought out there to the u.s. open, so many exciting moments. what are you going to remember most? >> a ton of different emotions, obviously. the best two weeks of my life. probably the best thing is seeing the first lady michelle obama after the match. yeah. i was on the one changeover.

i looked and she looked at me. i was like -- and then when they announced her, the crowd erupted. that was pretty impactful. >> when you did the millie rock, i was like, no, he did not. you did that. >> i have to do it. >> i know, and you brought it. of course it is not lost that you are the first black man to reach the semi-finals of the u.s. open since arthur ashe in 1972. playing in a stadium that is named after him. you won the arthur ashe humanitarian award in 2020. so what does all this mean to you? >> it's truly a blessing from where i came from. all the work that my parents did over the years, having them see that and be a part of that is crazy. and to be in the same sentence as arthur ashe in anything is unbelievable. something no one can ever take from me. i'm going to remember that forever. >> in some ways you want to

match what he did on the court, but you don't want to just be remembered for what you're doing on the court. >> that's right. i definitely want to -- with this week i want to move forward and i'm going pave the way, feels like i can play the game of tennis and just, you know, be a great leader as well. >> and now that you're a role model -- did you see the watch parties? i mean there were watch parties -- especially at your tennis club back in maryland. what does it mean to you to know that so many are looking up to you? >> for sure. for sure. as far as so many people, that's what it's all about. you know, we all have a certain gift. to use that gift to inspire so many people to also do great things. >> you were equally impressive off the court as you are on. your back story, when we heard about this -- your parents immigrating from sierra leone. your father being head of maintenance at a tennis club in maryland where you were born in maryland. then for you to literally to live on the ground for a time there, and you talked about this. just the sacrifice.

can you just tell us about how grateful you are to your parents? >> yeah. my parents are everything in my life. you know, we wouldn't be doing this interview, all the achievements i've had wouldn't happen without them. i'm just so thankful for them. them instilling in me hard work and understanding being humble and grateful for everything that comes your way. yeah. they shaped me into the person i am today. >> i remember your father saying hopefully this will pay for your college education. you said, i'm going to go further than that. >> exactly. they definitely wanted to use tennis as free education, full scholarship. i was like, you know, how about we just use it to change our life forever? just having that mindset at such a young age helped me to be able to get this thing done. yeah. you turned pro at the age of 16. here you are, 24 playing your first grand slam semi-final as you did.

there had to be -- i wouldn't say had to be. were there doubts along the way? what were the words of encouragement? >> just probably my dad saying, everyone writes their own story. you're the pioneer and you can write your own story. he told me all the people that didn't believe or laughing at you when you were wearing hand me downs, are you going to be the one laughing or fall into that? that was kind of the always underdog mentality and just proving myself right. >> yeah. like you said, you just eluded to it. you were taking rackets from the other kids that they discarded, clothing and all that. how do you go from that point to -- and great that your father -- what he said to you. where does that come from? how are you able to -- what's your message to others who may find themselves in a similar situation? >> i think the biggest thing is not understanding -- understanding that it's not about where you are now, but

the king will hand them back for safe keeping. a lot of tradition. from there the queen's coffin will be taken from the palace in a procession to st. giles cathedral. the king and queen consort, along with other members of the royal family will follow that procession on foot. there are thousands of people lining up to see and get a glimpse of not just the queen's coffin, but also the new king. once inside, there will be a service of reflection on the life of the queen and we'll have the new prime minister here in the uk, liz truss, attending that service as well. then in the evening the royal family will hold a vigil for the queen. the coffin will lie and rest there guarded by the royal company of archers. then the people who have come here to pay respects will be able to do that. we expect that to be in the thousands -- thousands of people coming to pay their final respects to queen elizabeth ii

you say you doctor it up. tell me the secret because i love some cornbread. >> number one, i like to doctor things simple at home. at home, you don't really want to take 20 minutes, 30 minutes. so i use the mix. i add a little baking powder. one thing i do is double fry it. after you fry items, you let it sit, moisture comes out. it gets soggy. then you drop it again after you let it rest for a minute. it stays crunchier. so when you have gatherings, parties, people are like how did you get it so crispy? a little shift. >> a little shift. >> and then once you double fry them, you're really doctoring them up. >> yeah what i did with this one is got honey. i like to add a little sweet and salty into my life. i brush on some honey. a little pistachios. >> why the pistachios? >> extra crunch.
