good evening from outside buckingham palace tonight. we've been on the ground here in london amidst a sea of blossoms and a flood of public displays of grief as britain continues to honor queen elizabeth. we begin tonight in scotland, where so many across the countryside turned out to pay their last respects to their beloved monarch. edinburgh streets crowded but hushed today. thousands of mourners packed in to watch in respectful silence as the queen's coffin passed by. her four children reverently walking behind the royal hearse. >> god bless the queen! >> on the path to st. giles' cathedral where her coffin will rest until tomorrow afternoon. earlier king charles iii settling into his new role of sovereign, pledging to members

global figure of a kind whose likes we're never going to see again. he's not going to be somebody who grows up into the role in the way that his mother did. so i expect that we'll see him trying to preserve what he understands to be the better parts of her legacy, such as her obvious commitment to public service. >> but there are many stakeholders involved. >> there are going to be questions. if the commonwealth is about colonialism, as the uk and the royal family have so often stated, why should the head of the commonwealth always be the uk monarch? shouldn't it rotate, if it truly is an association of nations? >> the british commonwealth is comprised of 56 nations, some former colonies, just 14 of those nations recognized king charles as their head of state in a mostly symbolic role. >> even before queen elizabeth died, there were mutterings of discontent amongst the commonwealth.
