he was stunned after shaking their hands. abc's ines de la cuetara joins us now from london. ines, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, andrew and rhiannon. the queen spending one final night at buckingham palace before she's brought here to westminster where many have already lined up to see her. overnight, a homecoming. the hearse carrying queen elizabeth's coffin driving through the gates of buckingham palace. outside, thousands lining the streets, even in the rain, hoping to catch a glimpse. this as the royal family comes together. the king, queen consort camilla, the new prince and princess of wales and harry and meghan all at the palace as the queen returned to london from scotland where she passed on thursday. the royal regiment of scotland saluting her majesty as her coffin was lifted onto this military plane. the queen's daughter, princess anne, traveling with her every emt,ilegtodoso

tour of nations, traveling to northern ireland before heading to london. >> now with that shining example before me, and with god's help, i take up my new duties resolved to seek the welfare of all the inhabitants of northern ireland. >> reporter: meanwhile, london now preparing for what could be the largest gathering in british history. members of the public already lining up outside of westminster where the queen will lie in state for four days in the lead-up to her funeral. more than 750,000 people expected. >> i thought, well, she's reigned for 70 years, so 24 hours of rain isn't going to hurt me for awhile. she was like a mother, grandmother that i've never met, and i think that she's done a fantastic job. >> reporter: and the queen's coffin will be brought to westminster in a procession later today. officials expect lines to see the queen could last up to 30 hours. guys. >> ines, thank you for that. more coverage from london

later this half hour. now to the troubling news about the prices we're paying, everything from groceries to rent, inflation getting worse, even with gas prices falling. abc's derricke dennis explains. >> reporter: this morning, new esy tes on wall street, the dow worse-than-expected news on inflation echoed by consumers feeling the pinch. >> you're supposed to try to pe groceries also way up, more than 13% from last year, partly due to weather, supply chain issues, energy costs, and the war in ukraine. the cost of eggs alone spiking 40% and rising significantly between july and august. single mom taylor adams says she's struggling to make ends meet. >> what else can you do? starve? you have to buy it. it kind of is what it is. do we like it? no. but i deal with the prices.

i mean, kind of is what it is at this point. >> reporter: when it comes to the overall inflation picture, the consumer price index shows a 0.1% increase in prices last month compared to a flat reading in july. that may seem small, but analysts worry it's a sign inflation is not cooling off. >> we're talking about 0.1%. >> reporter: president biden saying the nation's other economic indicators are all positive. >> the economy is still strong. unemployment is low. jobs are up. manufacturing is good, so i think it's -- i think we're going to be fine. >> reporter: but wall street is concerned about rising interest rates. the fed next week is expected to raise rates by another 0.75% or more making everything from car loans to credit card debt more expensive. one bright spot, gas prices have been falling for 91 consecutive days, but with eight weeks to go till the midterm elections, republicans say the president is in denial about inflation. andrew, rhiannon. >> our thanks to derricke dennis there.

the biden administration is scrambling this morning to prevent a strike by railroad workers with a contract deadline looming friday. labor secretary marty walsh is meeting today with union and rail officials. experts say a strike could devastate supply chains that are still recovering from the pandemic. breaking overnight, the ceo of my pillow, mike lindell, says the fbi seized his cell phone in the drive-through of a hardee's fast food restaurant in minnesota. the move appears to be connected to the justice department's investigation into attempts to overturn the 2020 election. lindell is a loyal trump supporter who has promoted conspiracy theories about the election. he claims the agents served him with a subpoena and questioned him about voting machines. in boston authorities are trying to figure out who is responsible for a suspicious ag northeastern university. a school employee was injured. sources say the incident does not appear to have been random. another suspicious package was found near campus. ukraine is gaining momentum after delivering a stunning blow to russian forces near kharkiv. troops are rolling into recently

liberated towns with crowds there cheering them on. an estimated 150,000 people have been freed from russian control in recent days. u.s. officials say ukraine pulled off the assault with a small force helped by u.s. intelligence. >> this is a classic sucker punch. the ukrainians for a month now, almost six weeks, have said, we are going to start an offense in the south, so what russia did was move troops from the northeast and the east down to reinforce those areas around kherson. meanwhile, while the ukrainians are saying, look over, look over here, they come around with a left hook. >> reporter: as russian soldiers flee, officials say they are uncovering more evidence of war crimes. back here at home, a new push to make abortion illegal nationwide after 15 weeks of pregnancy. senator lindsey graham has proposed a new bill following the supreme court's decision overturning roe v. wade. abc's justin finch is now here with reaction. justin, good morning. >> reporter: andrew, good morning, and as expected, republican senator lindsey

graham's abortion bill is drawing the ire of democrats, but it's also putting some of graham's fellow republicans in a tight spot as they try shifting their premidterm messaging away from abortion and on to president biden and rising inflation. nearly three months after that landmark supreme court decision overturning roe v. wade, south carolina senator lindsey graham reigniting the abortion rights debate with his new legislation. >> there's a narrative forming in america that the republican party and the pro-life movement is on the run. no, no, no, no, no, we're going nowhere. we welcome the debate. >> reporter: graham's bill calls for the federal ban of abortion after 15 weeks providing rare exceptions including for rape, incest and to save the mother's life. the bill sending shock waves through graham's republican party as they work to clinch house and senate majorities while slamming president biden's handling of the economy. >> i think most of the members

we are back now with a mother expressing outrage after an nfl coach responsible for injuring her daughter in a drunk driving crash struck a plea deal. former kansas city chiefs assistant coach britt reid admitted he was intoxicated last year when he crashed into two cars causing 5-year-old ariel young to suffer a traumatic brain injury. prosecutors have now agreed to seek no more than four years in prison after reid pleaded guilty. reid is the son of chiefs head coach andy reid. ariel's mother calls the plea deal a slap on the wrist. >> if anybody else had did that, we did that, any of us hit his car hitting his car and injured one of his kids, we would have been in jail by now. back then actually. it's almost two years later so. >> reid was facing up to seven years in prison if he went to trial. later on "good morning america," ariel's mother reveals new details about that crash.
