before our eyes. we can see these wonderful color images here now, but this is exactly what we would have been seeing at king george vi's funeral all those years ago. and the emotion then was about a man who led a nation through a war. the emotion know i think is a woman who led us through peace. but somebody who really did command total respect around the world, somebody who was on the throne when stalin was still leader of the soviet union. she's met so many presidents from truman onward. she's been in all of our lives for so long. it's a moment not just for rlo ain to mourn, but for the ♪

ronald reagan, high tea, dinner with the obamas. she witnessed so much change. as a head of state, she made sure that that relationship with the united states remained very strong. >> she absolutely did. so many historical moments there with the queen and u.s. presidents throughout the years, absolutely. and i think it's incredibly poignant as you say, winston churchill was her first prime minister and then just two days before she died, she brought in her 15th prime minister who turned out, of course, to be her last. i think you speak about her relationship with the u.s., her relationship with countries all over the world, and this is incredible visibility that she had globally. she visited more than a hundred countries throughout her reign, formed those personal relationships. and we see even in her death, just how visible she still

planned to be. i think when she came back to buckingham palace here last night in that state hearse, it was lit up, it was dark. but the hearse was lit so people could see her coffin. we see this long, slow procession today, giving more people the opportunity to come and catch a final glimpse of the woman whose motto was, i have to be seen to be believed. >> as they approach westminster, let's watch and listen.

and that turned into an investigation of a sex scandal and the president's relationship with white house intern monica lewinsky. starr's report led to clinton's impeachment by the house for personal and obstruction of justice acquitted by the senate. in 2020 starr came back and served on the defense team and president trump's first impeachment trial. he died yesterday in the hospital from complications after surgery. he was 76. turning to baseball, aaron judge took two more huge steps towards the record books. he smashed this opposite field drive in the sixth against the red sox for home run number 56 this season and then in the eighth, judge with this, watch. 389-foot shot to left field. that's number 57. now judge needs just five more homers to break the all-time american league record set by fellow yankee, roger maris 61 years ago, and judge capped off an epic night by scoring in the tenth as the yankees beat their

bitter rivals the sox, 7-6. we've got a lot more ahead including airfares for the holidays. they are expected to go sky high. how you could still get a great deal coming up. right now our interview with the mother of the girl critically injured in the dwi crash involving then kansas city chiefs coach britt reid. she is speaking out with new details of what happened that fateful night. victor oquendo is in kansas city with the exclusive interview. good morning, victor. >> reporter: good morning, george. we met felicia one day after britt reid pleaded guilty as part of a reduced sentence plea. this mother, she tells us her daughter aerial was always glued to her hip and says this is not what justice looks like. >> i remember looking in the mirror and seeing him coming, just full speed coming, and all of a sudden, everybody was stopped out. >> reporter: for the first time she is sharing horrific details about the night brit reid son of kansas city chief's head coach andy reid, crashed into her car leaving her daughter

ariel critically injured with a traumatic brain injury. >> oh, my god, he is about to hit us and boom. >> did you have a second to try to protect your daughter? >> no, i couldn't because it happened so fast. >> reporter: miller speaking with abc news just days after reid pleaded guilty to driving while impaired as part of a deal for a reduced sentence. >> anything to say before court this morning? >> no, thank you. >> reporter: the maximum prison time he'll now face, four years. >> he is just getting a slap on the wrist. anybody else had did that, we did that, any of us hit his car being drunk and injured one of his kids we would have been in jail. >> i think the family is upset because they perceive a different system of justice with those who have privilege and those who don't, those who have privilege and those from the victim's community. >> reporter: reid was an assistant coach for the chiefs at the time of the crash in february 2021, just three days before his team played in the super bowl. >> arriving on scene. one child possibly critically injured. slamming into felicia's cars and her cousin which broke down near the team's training facility. both pulled over on the shoulder. >> three vehicles involved. dark colored sedan and silver suv and one vehicle is flipped.

>> reporter: according to a search warrant obtained by abc news, an officer on scene reported smelling a moderate odor of alcoholic beverages emanating from reid. he told the officer he had had two to three drinks and was on the prescription drug adderall. this image from the kr wreck an where ariel was sitting, totally crushed. >> i don't hear my baby and i was freaking out then finally we find her because she's buried under the seats. all the seats broke in the car. >> she was just trapped underneath some seats in the car? >> yeah, when i got her out of the car she was stiff like you see like this, my arm is stiff, she was stiff like a board. >> reporter: ariel rushed to the hospital spending nearly two weeks in a coma. >> when she did finally wake up what was that like for you? >> it was like, oh, my god, my baby -- god heard me and my baby woke up. i was relieved but she didn't at that time, she didn't know nothing. she didn't know who i was. hey, baby.

she's, you know, moving away. >> she didn't recognize you? >> no. she didn't recognize me. >> reporter: felicia says ariel doesn't remember the crash and her daughter who loves to dance has had to relearn many things, details about ariel's condition are limited because of a legal agreement. in november the chiefs worked out a payment plan for her medical care. >> how is ariel doing? >> she's 7 now and she is back in school. it was a bit of a relief but it's still -- it was still difficult. it still is difficult sending her back. >> reporter: ariel's road to recovery is long but her family says she is improving every day. they wear these ariel strong shirts in support. >> she's been strong through the whole -- the whole almost two years from when she woke up through the coma and, you know, being strong through the hospital till now, being strong. >> reporter: and reid's attorne in part mr. reid accepted responsibility for his conduct. he continues to be remorseful and has apologized to all affected. he will be sentenced in late october. guys?

>> well, it is encouraging to see little ariel is doing better. victor, thank you. we appreciate that. we turn to the latest on the high-stakes transition of power happening in england as king charles begins his reign and inherits the massive fortune of the crown, tax-free. chief foreign correspondent ian pannell has the latest outside buckingham palace. ian, good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, whit. the eyes of much of the nation are now focused here in the capital and those final few days until the queen is buried but attention is turning, as you suggest, not just to her legacy but to also what she leaves behind financially in a country that's very much in the midst of economic pain. with the crown, charles inherits great responsibility, but also great wealth. king charles iii is in line for a double inheritance as the son and monarch. >> there's a lot of debate about whether or not the monarchy -- they argue they bring in money through tourism.

opposition argues that there are lots of funds that would find . >> reporter: the king now has three main sources of wealth. sovereign grant, money the uk treasury gives the crown to fulfill its royal duties. last year the queen received $57 million. the family's private wealth, the full extent a closely guarded secret. then duchy of lancaster. a private estate the monarch receives. the queen received $27 million from its last year. the royals have never revealed the sums of their personal fortunes, "the sunday times" estimate the queen is at $426 million. >> i cannot help but feel the weight of history. >> reporter: however big his inheritance, king charles isn't legally obliged to pay tax on it unlike everyone else in britain. they're liable to pay a 40% tax. >> as king he is except from inheritance tax on money he receives from the queen, even when it comes to personal wealth. i think at a time like this when

a lot are struggling when you're talking about someone with such wealth, i think that is likely to spark some criticism and debate. >> reporter: today even the younger royals are getting richer. prince william who is now the prince of wales and the duke of cornwall will receive the duchofor it's u one of the largest real estate portfolios worth more than a billion dollars. last year it turned a profit of roughly $25 million. all of that going to the then prince charles at the time who managed the state for decades. for years the duchy has bankrolled the lifestyle of the next in line windsors, including prince william and kate and harry and meghan for a time. this change of the royal guard coming when times are tough for millions in the uk. the energy crisis and soaring inflation hitting the pockets of british taxpayers. some taking issue with taxpayer dollars supporting the monarchy and their lifestyle. >> it's hard to justify that, especially when so many people are struggling. >> they are quite wealthy already and i don't see why the need.

[ laughter ] >> i just haven't figured out yet what that is. >> tell us about the "adventures of qai qai." what inspired this book? >> yeah, so qai qai is -- it's so authentic, a story we came up with during covid and this particular book of qai qai is about using her imagination because kids have such an amazing imagination and we couldn't leave the house and i was playing with olympia and our dog qai qai who has this amazing personality on all social media platforms. and, yeah, we just like wanted to really just put in people's minds that we can't forget how important it is to just use your imagination and play and also believe in yourself and so there's some really cool hidden messages in there about self-confidence and that you can do it and also just going back to the art of just being a kid.

>> yeah. >> yeah. >> one of the first things you notice is the beautiful illustrations. it's truly incredible. you handpicked yesenia moises to do the illustrations. what was it about her that you connected with? what was your daughter olympia's first reaction when she opened the book? >> when i saw the illustration, i said, listen, i really wanted to represent, you know, a black girl because i thought it was really important. the reason qai qai came on is i was looking for a black doll and i just wanted it to be something really authentic that represented like who we are, hair and like everything and the texture and i thought she did a wonderful job with getting that across from even with the mom and the dad. and it's, you know, it's an amazing family in the book. so anyway, olympia thinks it's her in the book. [ laughter ] she thinks the dad is my husband and it's quite funny because i'm

like, it's not us although it's heavily -- i don't want it to go to her head. she's like, can you read me the book? >> read my book. >> no, no, no, that's not you. this girl is a little older. you're not doing recitals like this and she's like, okay, okay, yeah, i'm not -- but when i'm 7 years old, that's going to be me. yeah, yeah. >> she's so precious. is this the beginning of yet another new business empire? is this the beginning of a series or -- >> you know what i love about the whole -- everything about qai qai, everything is so authentic. so i do think that, you know, because of the imagination there's going to be other stories that we would love to explore and where does qai qai go next and so i think there's something really special about that. so this is -- you know, i'm a dreamer. so, of course, it won't be one. it's like -- it has to be a lot of them so that's kind of the idea. >> that's awesome.
