moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. dan: it is the san francisco dream. glistening landmarks, beautiful landscapes, a mix of people and cultures. but these decor -- these days, people see nothing but problems. major tech workspaces and workers moving out, and now a shift in fs -- sfo. i give for joining us. i am dan ashley. ama: and i'm ama daetz. the mission to build a better bay area. dan: j.r. stone joins us with a change coming to the airport. j.r.: american airlines has had a flight attendant base for 50 plus years, but that will soon end, blaming competition and reduced customer demand. we are told this will not affect flight service, but it will affect families that have lived in the bay area for 40 years.

>> it is a sad day. it feels like a kick in the gut. j.r.: tim schwartz, 27 year flight attendant for american airlines, is reacting to news that he will have to leave california. one of 400 bay area flight attendants that will be relocated or offered retirement packages as the company will close the san francisco base. >> we are a close family and it is hard to know that our family will be broken up. j.r.: american airlines says we expect that san francisco will remain the same level of flying it does today, but there are no plans to grow san francisco and no future flight prospects. senior fellow at stanford, leo hannon, says this is not surprising. saying last year that san francisco lost six point 5% of

its population. >> san francisco is the slowest growing large city is in the country. this is an indication that san francisco is not a growing location. j.r.: some of the flight attendants have been with american for 40 years. that is something the airline likely took into consideration. >> american is thinking that we have a lot of folks that will be retiring in the next 10 years. if we want to replace them and keep that flight attendant base in san francisco, it is going to be killer for them to afford to live in the city. j.r.: schwartz believes the financial impact of the pandemic might have been the end all here. >> they have got to be careful with how they spend their money. the san francisco flight attendants are just the casualty of that. j.r.: schwartz tells me he is

looking at the possibility of relocating to phoenix or dallas. henny and believes some of the companies and housing regulations in the state have to be loosened and we need to be demanding more of our politicians. he says the focus should be on how to bring in and keep companies. back to you. dan: thanks very much. at 11:00, there was a clash of opposing rallies outside castro valley unified school district today because of pride flag murals being painted on more than dozen schools in the district. tim johns on the controversy. tim: opposing sides rallying outside the offices of the castro valley unified school district on wednesday. the cause is these pride flag murals being painted at schools around the district. >> this is about creating a

safer school environment for kids. tim: the idea began as a student led initiative and the school board approved the plan earlier this year. they say it is a sign that the district will be inclusive for everyone. >> 80% of the school is supportive. very supportive. [cheering] tim: the murals have gained national attention after the stories got picked up by multiple right wing outlets. >> the school district have been the direct targets of hundreds of hateful comments and emails. tim: but many of those who came out to protest the murals tell abc 7 news they are not trying to foster a homophobic environment. >> be kind to everyone and love everyone.

tim: cassandra wright has three children in the district. she believes topics like gender identity and sexual orientation are topics that should be talked about in the home. >> we are forced to talk to our kids about things that we are not ready to talk to them about. tim: the protest organizer who identified herself as jackie said she has received dozens of messages of support. that includes from those who were not present at the rallies. >> i do realize that some staff and some children are scared to stand on our side because they do not know what will happen to them. tim: we did reach out to the school district about wednesday's protest, but hadn't heard back the time of broadcast. tim johns, abc 7 news. ama: a san francisco-based app has disabled its messaging feature after an explicit image was seen by users. seesaw is used across schools to communicate with parents and teachers. it was a cybersecurity to

attack. a san jose state professor has several tips for parents to avoid any other issues. >> changing your password every few months, do not use the same password again, do not click on the links, think before you click on that, and use two factor authentication. ama: seesaw plans to reenable the feature tomorrow. dan: now to a story you will only see on seven. a college student in san jose is speaking out after a rocky start at a new off-campus residential building. amanda del castillo highlights what happened and how properly -- property management is responding. amanda: a couple of san jose state students were not expecting this site as they moved into this brand-new campus housing building. the complex is unaffiliated with sjsu, alt as one of the luxury

apartments two blocks from campus. first-year transfer student leah mendez signed a lease as the building remained under construction. the property manager approves that people were set to move in on the eighth. however, there were issues addressed that alerted the tenants that there would be warm but not hot-water, dishwashers still had to be installed, and there would be a small hole in residence' ceilings. the property manager says they offered a probe rate rent. in a statement, they told us the well-being of our residents has always been our priority. but mendez recorded this leak in her roommate's restaurant --

restroom on move in day. the property manager says the contractor responded quickly and the leak was later resolved. mendez sharing in the first month of living on her own in a new city, the experience has not been worth the expense. >> i have been doing everything out of pocket, working extremely hard so i can afford to live here, and when i find out it is not the expectations, not worth the high-priced price, it was frustrating. amanda: the property manager tells abc 7 news that there was an inconvenience caused, however the unit remained inhabitable. ama: in gilroy today, a 16-year-old driver was arrested for crashing into a 92-year-old man on a mobility scooter, killing him. investigators say this happened between 1st street and brent avenue around 5:30 today. the suspect immediately fled the

scene. he was later arrested on hit-and-run charges and vehicular manslaughter. dan: the master tenant of the warehouse in that deadly ghost ship fire could end up back in jail. prosecutors say a search of derick almena's home last month resulted in a machete and several bows and arrows. his lawyer tells abc 7 news the bullet was likely put there by almeida's wife as an alternative display, but does not know where it came from. the hearing on thursday will determine if he violated the terms of his probation. ama: an effort to find -- fight climate change. ownership now pecans -- belongs to the patagonia trust and the holdfast collective. any money that does not go back into the business will be used to protect nature and

the guru from the golden gate weather services has been tracking and keeping historical records. he sent out some information and is september rain unusual? in the past 173 years, it rained in san francisco 100 and 11 of those years. the record for san francisco was 5.4 inches in 1904. it is not that unusual. take a look at the rainfall averages in the bay area. we are in september. we do not get a lot of rain but we get some. santa rose average -- we do have a storm impact scale that does make -- doesn't make an appearance too often. it is a light level 1 with a slight chance of thunder that cannot be ruled out on monday. saturday night, this model is
