news and that breaking news is in castro valley where a car plowed into the trader joe's on redwood road injuring several people sky 7 arrived at the scene shortly after the accident happened 3:45 this afternoon an hour and 15 minutes ago authorities. say a man drove the car about 50 feet into the store. they don't believe it was intentional alameda county fire tweeted these photos showing the car well into the store at the checkout area where people wait obviously to pay for their groceries. so there were people in that area. crews managed to pull the car out of the store about 35 minutes ago, and they had to use saws to widen the doorway to get the thing out at this point. we don't know exactly how many people were hurt or the extent of their injuries, but we did see people and you can see them here being taken out on stretchers. we will stay on this obviously. good evening.

thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm a dates the other story we're following tonight is an alleged case of racism in the east bay. i've never heard about this kind of treatment for example a white man who may have been in a similar instance. and i've heard about this many many times this kind of disrespect and humiliation for black men and brown men and other folks of color. tonight one woman is speaking after her husband was handcuffed and wrongly accused of driving a stolen truck abc 7 news reporter loose pena spoke with that man's wife who strongly believes. this is an example clearly of racism and loose joins us in the newsroom with the story. there's danielama, this happened 48 hours ago in oakland resident was gearing up to go to work when a couple accused him of stealing their vehicle. he kept telling them the truck was his he was too shaken to speak today, but his wife said police detained him and questioned him unfairly because he's black.

on tuesday morning around 11:30 am nicole hirsch's husband was sitting in his vehicle when a couple approached them. he described it like they were looking in his truck bed and he rolled down his window if i'm not mistaken and said to them can i help you with something and they said something to the effect of our truck was stolen. nicole's husband is a landscaper. his truck had worked tools in the back. she said that couple went on to accuse him of stealing their vehicle even after he showed them this photo taken for years ago of the same truck minutes later. multiple oakland police vehicles surrounded him he put his hands up is my understanding and followed there orders this whole time. nicole said her husband tried explaining to officers, but the truck was in fact his they put him in handcuffs before he was even asked for his license or

frustration nicole believes her husband was treated this way because he's black. i definitely do just like this couple that's claiming. this is our truck. he's also a person why was his voice and his opinion not given that same weight and credence. opd can oakland claiming they had found it and said in part when officers arrived they located a vehicle that matched the year make model and color of the victim's vehicle and detained the occupant pending further investigation officers later determined that the vehicle in question was registered to the individual who was detained. we went to the area to speak to neighbors who preferred to remain anonymous in fear of retaliation. he is black so they look at us like since we're black. we're the most targeted was to either still a call or it's just very scary because you can't trust anybody be cold tweeted

number one concern right now is crime. nancy you law has been running her gift store in san francisco chinatown for more than two decades in july someone burglarized her business and did more than $4,000 in damage the people poking the store. they they bought my dog. they my cash register. and the money inside you law agrees with the results from the new sf next poll published in the chronicle more than 1,650. people were surveyed one poll question asked what people living in the city think about conditions in the next two years 44% of the asian americans who answered say conditions would be worse. well, i think things are not getting better, but we're hoping to get better, but i see getting getting worse abc 7 reported on a number of break-ins and attacks on asian americans across the city of san francisco. the issue is personal for lily ho president of the delta chinatown initiative. i know two people personally that i know within the last two weeks that have been physically

city. we have a city of 114,000 people in the council has very serious business to do yet. we are sidetracked in these meetings by these types of issues. according to court documents two former employees of the los medanos community health care district accused thorpe of inappropriate sexual conduct when he was the district's executive director, they claimed thorpe made unwanted sexual advances and created a hostile working environment the case was settled for 350,000 thorpe has not been convicted of a crime. he released a statement saying he's heartbroken by the allegations, which he calls completely false. san francisco unified school district is under fire after a second victim says an ex-athletic director. allegedly sexually abused her on campus. it comes after a former student filed a lawsuit in august the school district allowed lawrence young yet chan to resign from san francisco's george washington high school. the former student says chan

started sexually abusing her in 2012 when she was a minor in the 10th grade. she is filing a lawsuit against chan and the school district for emotional and physical harm the first victim filed a complaint against the athletic director in 2017. in the south bay $500 a month for two years could soon be finding its way into the pockets of some residents. the city of mountain view is kicking off a pilot program to provide a guaranteed basic income abc 7 news reporter zach fuentes was there as the program was outlined and has more on the impact that it's expected to have. former stockton mayor michael tubbs featured in the new york times thursday called the pioneer after the city started the first mayor-led guaranteed income program starting in 2019 that program gave $500 a month to $125 people for two years since then cities in the bay area and across the country have worked on similar programs. the city of mountain view is now the latest 500 dollars a month to 166 people for two years to

randomly selected low-income families. there's far too many families across the united states and our region that are struggling. so what you see in this program is the city of mountain view taking action. the program has been funded by a grant applications open up friday at mountainview.gov/elevate mv and stay open through midnight september 25th families have to meet specific criteria a family of four would have to make 50,550 or less per year qualify for the pilot. participants must be a parent or custodial caretaker for at least one child under the age of 18 or pregnant at the time of application critics have said guaranteed basic income will encourage people not to work results released after the first year of stockton's pilot program found that there was an increase in employment and productivity wellbeing and a decrease in stress. they also found that people paid off debt and that the money was spent unnecessities not drugs dr. michael stanton is a clinical psychologist and a

professor of public health at cal state east bay, you know, when people don't have enough money for their children for their schools for their families, i mean that has a real impact in it. it is related to, you know, depressed depression. stanton says pandemic era stimulus payments have also indicated that a guaranteed income program could have broad positive impacts poverty actually declined because of payments like this that the government gave to some of the lowest income families the family selected for the program. be notified the first week of october those first $500 a month payments are expected to start december 15th in the south bay zach fuentes abc 7 news. governor newsom ups his attacks on abortion restrictions across the country and now he's launching billboard campaigns in seven states. also the governor is calling on the department of justice tonight after the governor of florida sends dozens of migrants to martha's vineyard to make a to martha's vineyard to make a point abc 7 ♪ ♪

fire burning feet from his house. that was like the morning the oh, my neighbor came by knocked in the door. we could see right away. what's going on? the whole back windows lit up video from that morning shows bright flames from the hillside getting very close to homes millpoint or another residents were forced to evacuate for several hours. what remains is a burnt hillside that poses a new threat with incoming rain mudslides. there's a big trench behind here to catch anything like that mill pointers showed us that trench in his backyard designed to keep mudslides away. although the burn scar is feet from his house. he thinks he should be fine this weekend when we first moved here. it was already set up. it's not to worry. we've had landslides in the back hill and they're never really substantial the contra costa fire protection district is aware of the threat this rain brings. it has several hundred plus acre fires this season already and some smaller ones as well that you know have the potential to have left these scars that could
