and over the past two months. she's in for stricter penalties to address two key issues playing the city drug use and property crime. the question is will the new policies clean up the streets you promise san francisco's you'd hold criminals accountable. what are you doing now to make that happen. so again, it comes back to creating guidelines and policies within our office about how we're going to hold these offenders accountable even for stricter penalties for drug users drug dealers and juveniles a week ago today. you announced a policy that will bund misdemeanor drug possession charges, can you walk us through how that will work? yes. so the police have begun siding individuals who are engaged in public and open drug use we can't become a city that just allows people to use drugs openly in public and so they will cite people that they see engaged in that activity and we will discharge the first four of those citations, but keep track of who these individuals are that have received those

citations upon them receiving a fifth. we will then charge the full bundle of all five and then forward that to our community justice center where they will then be required to go drug treatment services last month you enforced a stricter penalty for drug dealers to ensure those arrested with over five grams of an illegal drug face felony charges rather than be sent to rehabilitate of court how many felony drug charges has your office filed to date my understanding as of this morning? we filed 148 cases with respect to drug dealing since i took over data published to your data dashboard shows a slight uptick in drug cases prosecuted by your office, but the charging rate for narcotics crime seems to be on par with your predecessor chase at boudin. do you expect that to change? i expect to see perhaps similar rates as far as the charging but what you're going to see is a difference in the way that these cases are handled and the way that they're resolved the people who live in the tenderloin say the open drug markets are

getting out of control. when do you think these policies are implementing now will actually reflect change on the streets. so we're very hopeful that that will be very soon. we're also working with the cisco police department to make sure that we are assisting them in any operations that they that they're doing down in the tenderloin. we're encouraging them, of course to make more arrests when they go out and make an arrest we will do our part to ensure that there is accountability. and so we're expecting hopefully to see that difference on the street very soon to find soon in the next few months. really. jenkins added she has reducing the caseloads of the team's designated to handle property crime cases to ensure there are strict consequences for crimes like car break-ins, but of course, we'll be tracking the disposition of those cases to verify whether those promises are kept and dan her office is in the process of making that data public so we can follow up on this good. stephanie obviously in november elections coming up very quickly is the new da confident that she

airport recreation and to shop. but today the train sit pretty empty to what it once was how empty this bar graph will give you an idea. it shows ridership from 6am to midnight during july this year. you'll see the orange line shows on average more than 133,000 people road bart on the average weekday. that's only 32% of what it was pre-covid with the shift in demand. it begs. the question will bart survive 50 years from now, so i think we'll have bart we brought this question to an expert with insight into every transit authority across the bay area andrew from here. he's the deputy executive director for the metropolitan transportation commission or mtc. firewood to envision bart 25 and 50 years from now. i think it's a pretty safe bet that bart will pretty much be the same institution. it is in 25 years. it is today why from here points

to significant long-term investments that transit system is about to get an entire new fleet of trains we have about 700 vehicles already. they're on their way or in service and over the next 10 years, you know, another several hundred to a thousand will be here each train replacement costs 1 million dollars. so the incoming 1000 trains will equal a billion dollar investment over the next decade. we're not going to waste that investment. we've got to figure out a way to incorporate that into the future. well bart is here to stay. its future will look different there's plans for seamless experience that adapts to new innovations like smart cars and autonomous vehicles making it easier for riders to get to their destination and that involves maybe one transport account. maybe under the clipper and envelope that allows you to take advantage of maybe more efficient ride. share technologies automated vehicle technologies that can get you to that trunk line.

what will that experience look like in 50 years. we'll ride share companies in autonomous vehicles like these robo taxis be the new normal in 50 years. we're going to see robo taxis everywhere mark rose kind is the chief safety innovation officer for zukes amazon self-driving vehicle company based in foster city offering mobility as a service. unlike uber or lyft. it's a carriage style car where passengers face each other. there's no steering wheel side mirrors or traditional driving controls. so you're gonna have your own little cocoon where you get to sit there and enjoy your ride with optimal air conditioning and whatever music you want zukes will soon be launching this robo taxi service that will allow consumers to request a ride via an app. they're already discussions about times in san francisco when you've got a big bus in the middle of the night trying to help them shift workers getting two or from their job and we've already had some chats with sfmta and some other groups like perfect circumstance to put a

four-seat robot taxi moving those people more economical all-electric these new innovations are aimed at enhancing accessibility to other forms of mass transit planned for the future. we've got a big extension to san jose that's under construction. we're working very aggressively with the folks on the high speed rail io get at train in to downtown san francisco with a multi-billion dollar tunnel work is underway to invest in long-standing train systems that are moving people from the valley from here says long-term goal is to find ways for people to avoid using parks by incentivizing other transit options like trains and buses. this will reduce congestion on our roadways a problem that's getting worse by comparison congestion on highways has already surpassed. pre-pandemic levels emily loper is the vice president of public policy at bay area council, which conducted a survey a roughly 200 employers over the

past year to identify future. commute trends the most recent data shows that employees tend to only be commuting to offices two to three days per week. and those days tend to be to stay through thursday according to the july survey 19% of companies will have employees permanently work remotely and 36% of employers have already or planned to reduce office space in the bay area because of that most people associate kind of traveling in their minds with like commuting and getting stuck in traffic on their way to work. well their way home, but actually less than 30% of trips are taken to and from work and that's even lower now that so many people are working from home, of course transit systems are still struggling to recover writers. so where does that leave the demand for bart's future? i think that's one of the huge challenges. well the future compete with the past. i do think that we have to be mindful that it will not be what it was before good innovations

like zukes offering convenient alternatives take precedence over bar like rideshare companies did to taxis. it's our future to form within five to ten years. they could be commonplace where take your app out and you're taking a bus for one part of your trip and you're getting into zooks for another part of the trip. and it's seamless the only top 78 cents for zooks rose. kind says pricing will be in the ballpark of uber or lyft cost might be about the same when we get started for some consumers. the convenience may be well worth the price. the question is will we all need bart in the same way if they're gonna survive they need to actually become transit agencies. which kata? much more to the kind of the majority of trips that people take which are to the supermarket to go see their friends. well the transit authorities billion dollar investment made today be worth it 50 years from now. i think the pandemic and the change in environment probably makes us think differently about the tail end of that investment
