morning. the governors of arizona, texas, and florida say president biden isn't doing enough to tackle the nation's crisis at the southern border. the white house here firing back saying republicans are using migrants as political pawns and are refusing to work on a bipartisan solution. weeks before the november midterm elections, immigration emerging as the latest political flash point. this man is among some 50 migrants including several children who landed in martha's vineyard thursday. when asked, he says he had no idea he was in massachusetts. florida governor ron desantis on why he had them flown there. >> we are not a sanctuary state. it's expensive if people are coming here. you got to tax the social services and all these other things. >> this is just about a political stunt. there's nothing tough about using women and children for your own political gain. ron desantis is a coward. >> reporter: hours later, more migrants arriving in washington, d.c., texas governor greg abbott

busing them to the vice president's home, surprise arrivals forcing agencies in d.c. and martha's vineyard to scramble to assist. >> they were extremely confused. >> reporter: since april texas has bused more than 8,000 migrants to d.c. and some 2,500 to new york city since early august. >> this is a national responsibility. it should be a national burden. >> reporter: california governor gavin newsom tweeting that what the governors of arizona, florida and texas are doing isn't clever, it's cruel, and calling for the justice department to investigate these inhumane efforts to use kids as political pawns. president biden challenging republicans to help draft a bipartisan solution. >> it's long overdue for senate republicans to come to the table, provide a pathway for dreamers, those on temporary status, farm workers, and essential workers. >> reporter: the u.s. is now on track to surpass 2 million crossings at the mexico border this year. that's up from last year's near record 1.6 million.

the white house saying it's working to fix a broken system and the legal process will take time. rhiannon, andrew. >> justin, thank you. authorities in orlando, florida, have been searching this lake, you see, for a missing child after an apparent lightning strike. police say the child was part of a middle school rowing team whose boat capsized. lightning was reported in the area and may have hit the boat. one other child was hospitalized, and we'll have more on today's weather in a few minutes. now to former president trump issuing a warning about what could happen if he's indicted. it comes as a judge issues a new ruling in the mar-a-lago documents investigation. here's abc's andrea fujii. >> reporter: this morning, former president trump declaring his innocence in the mar-a-lago documents case. >> well, i can't imagine being indicted. i've done nothing wrong. >> reporter: and saying any indictment would not keep him from running for president. >> i don't think the people of the united states would stand for it, and as you know, if a

thing like that happened, i would have no prohibition against running. >> reporter: speaking on "the hugh hewitt radio show" trump says he does not expect to face any charges. >> if it happened, i think you'd have problems in this country, the likes of which perhaps we've never seen before. >> reporter: but when pressed, he would not elaborate on what problems. it comes as a judge yesterday denied the justice department's request for a partial stay in her ruling that limited their investigation into the more than 100 documents seized at mar-a-lago, documents marked as classified. the judge saying she's not willing to accept the doj's assertion that the documents taken were classified, and she demanded they be handed over to a special master for review. trump claims he declassified the documents in question, and there are witnesses, though his attorneys have not argued that point. >> i think it was other people also were there, but i have the absolute right to declassify, absolute. a president has that absolute

right. >> reporter: a new poll from fox news finds 65% of people surveyed believe trump was wrong to take the documents. as for his possible 2024 bid for president, trump says his supporters will stand behind him. >> if you noticed, the poll numbers are the highest they've ever been. the people are not going to stand for this stuff. they've weaponized the department of justice and fbi. >> reporter: the justice department could appeal that latest decision in the mar-a-lago case, an issue that could go all the way to the supreme court. andrew, rhiannon. >> andrea, thank you. and now to texas where the head of the state police is now addressing the outrage over the school shooting in uvalde. in his first interview since the massacre, steve mccraw says the law enforcement response at robb elementary was, quote, anything but heroic. an investigation found authorities waited more than 70 minutes to kill the gunman, but mccraw would not say if he thought any charges should be filed against officers. >> i'll be glad to apologize to

the families on behalf of law enforcement because, as i've testified before, it was an abject failure. >> you know the evidence. do you believe that any law enforcement officer should face criminal charges for what happened? >> i have some thoughts, but i'm not going to convey my thoughts publicly right now. >> mccraw blamed uvalde school police chief pete arredondo but said his own officers also share some of the blame. the u.s. has announced another $600 million in military aid for ukraine bringing the total to nearly 16 billion since the war began. the infusion of weapons follows the discovery of yet another mass grave. officials say more than 400 bodies were found in the city of izyum after the russians retreated. a surprising admission from vladimir putin during a meeting with china's president. putin admitting that china has voiced concerns about the war effort. putin's candor could indicate just how badly russia needs help. five miles long. that's how long the line has been to view queen elizabeth's coffin.

new details about the doctor from north dallas accused of contaminating patient's iv bags. a criminal complaint claims reynaldo ortiz jr. told a colleague that his bosses were, quote, trying to crucify him after a medical mistake. shortly after that 12 people received ivs injected with nerve stopping agents and heart stopping drugs. one fellow died. others suffered cardiac emergencies. if convicted he could face life in prison. police all across the country are watching a new trend in street crime. they're offering tips to anyone headed to the bank or atm. >> reporter: this morning, authorities are warning about a sharp increase in what they call jugging, which is when criminals loiter around an atm or bank, and then follow unsuspecting victims to another location and steal the cash the victim has just withdrawn. >> this jugging is different than some of the ones you've had

earlier this year. and that is a higher level of violence. >> reporter: police in austin, texas say they're seeing a surge of victims. 84 cases already this year, with more than half a million dollars stolen. the latest case in austin just last week. a woman violently attacked by two people while walking home from a bank. >> as the victim entered her home, she was violently assaulted by one of the suspect, threaten to the ground and drug across the pavement, trying to maintain her possessions. >> reporter: the two suspects took cash from the woman's purse before fleeing. and last month, a man was followed to a gas station after cashing a check. while inside paying for gas, he says someone smashed his car window and stole his cash. >> it was a gut-shot feeling of absolute shock knowing what just happened. my entire month's salary gone in a split second. >> reporter: it's not just texas. surveillance video from a convenience store in alabama shows a suspect breaking the window of a truck and stealing money.
