diamonds. don't miss these deals by factory direct and save the jewelry exchange, redwood city. now from abc, seven live breaking news. hi there. thanks for joining us breaking news we've been following for you is in oakland, where there is now a four alarm fire. it is burned at least two homes along interstate 80, or make that 5 80 please at 35th avenue, others are being threatened. sky seven is live right now over the scene where you can still see a lot of white smoke. this is certainly a little better than in the past hour when we've been seeing a lot of black smoke emerging over that huge stretch of homes and businesses. we are told this fire started in some brush along the 5 83 way and then obviously this being right next to homes and spread into the neighborhood . so a couple of structures we understand did burn. the fire is
3:01 pm
in the laurel neighborhood of oakland, not far from a chevron station, and this is not quite in the hills. it's in the foothills. crews are fighting the fire from the westbound lanes of the freeway and along quigley street as well. and now we're going to show you the video from about 20 minutes ago when i was talking about the black smoke when the flames were burning quite intensely. you can see okay, so here's the hillside kind of war began and then a spread into the structures. you can see all that area that's been charred. you saw that chevron station we were talking about. so how's was fully involved as well as a fence. we saw that between homes that was also on fire. pushing a little bit here and you can see some of the charge structure there and some of the trees that have also been touched by flames. and now this is a look from a cow trans camera. you can see the flames and traffic and we understand the traffic is backed up for miles. past the point of the highway 13 junction. so this is
3:02 pm
5 80 in both directions were told it is bad 5 80 westbound and eastbound as well. keep in mind that where this broke out is 5 80 at 35th avenue, so we'll continue to follow this breaking news for you will bring you updates as we get them here and on air and on the abc seven streaming app. so what firefighters need, of course, is hopefully not a lot of winds to blow those members around and spread the fire. let's check in with meteorologist sanjay patel, now sandia. yeah christians, so the conditions are actually favorable for the firefighters to get the upper hand. let me show you a live view from our east bay hills camera. you can see some of that smoke right now from that fire. as we take a look at the current conditions, it is 70 degrees, relative humidity, 59. it is a little breezy westerly to 16, but a west wind transports higher humidity, and it's not super gusty just yet, as you take a look at the hourly forecast, it's still going to be breezy the next few hours, so hopefully they can make some progress pretty quickly. now if you look
3:03 pm
at the air quality in the surrounding area, it's good to moderate, so we're not seeing major impacts from that fire, but localized sure that smoke could be causing some issues as you look at the winds and the surrounding areas, it is certainly stronger in places like san francisco, where it's 29 miles an hour, but oakland right now reporting 16 mile an hour winds, so hopefully the crews get an upper hand on this and get that fire out quickly. kristen you so much. we'll continue to check back with you. and of course, we'll continue to fight. about the fire in oakland , and we'll bring you updates as we get them. now we are going to change gears and move on with our regular getting answers program here on abc seven. as you know, every day we talked with experts about issues important to the bay area and get answers for you in real time today, a bay area man on the eve of a 40 mile run to raise money for cancer research he has lost people close to him to prostate cancer, and he'll be on two ask
3:04 pm
you to join his efforts. also an oakland teacher and her daughter will join us to share their history with the british royal family and their book that's all about queen elizabeth. but first lots of medical headlines. is there an ideal time to get the bible in covid booster this fall is the monkey pox virus growing resistant to existing treatments. joining us live now to answer those questions and more is abc seven. special correspondent doctor patel, doctor patel. thanks for joining us. happy friday. kristen as always, it's an honor to be here with you. oh, it's always great to have you breaking news does mean we have a little less time, but i do want to ask you. are you a jeopardy fan? i've been a jeopardy fan since before i can remember in my old school, my old school little tv. totally. me too. okay so new season kicked off this week. of course he in honor of our favorite quiz show. we are going to kick off our segment now with i want to be jeopardy with doctor patel. so how do we play this doctor patel? i'm even wearing i'm even
3:05 pm
wearing you can't really tell him wearing a plaid blazer to get that game show host vibe. so here we go. we're gonna i'm gonna throw out three questions, kristen. they're very simple trivia questions, but you're gonna have to answer them and pure jeopardy. fashion. are you ready? okay, i am ready. alright. first question. this pharmaceutical company just announced a phase three clinical trial testing an m r n a influenza vaccine. uh oh. okay i know we're supposed to be quick. i do not know this. and if our viewers are not gonna answer that for me, i'll say fight, sir. this is jeopardy! how are you going to say that? what is faisal? alright next next question, please. okay this actor was filmed getting his first colonoscopy and shared his experience in order to raise awareness. who is ryan reynolds? awesome plus 1000. whatever arbitrary number i'm gonna give you and last question on wannabe jeopardy. ladies and gentlemen, these everyday products even
3:06 pm
when labeled as clean and natural may still contain known as skin irritants and or allegiance. this is based on the study from stanford university. what is skin lotion? let me check with my judges. we're gonna accept that. kristen. what our skincare products. congratulations two out of three is pretty great. at some point. we'll do final jeopardy. relaxed than ken jennings this week. i don't know if you heard about that hoopla, but thank you very much. look i want to get a little deeper into the covid booster because it is out. but what is the ideal time to get it? i think the white house covid coordinator said something about that today. he did you know, we chris and you and i have talked about wanting to make sure that people were getting it before the fall surge, potentially with cold and flu season lifted restrictions more viruses out there. but what white house coordinator she's john directly said was the ideal time is between now and halloween. so in other words, get it before the end of october , obviously have to be mindful of when your last shot or boosters or if you previously
3:07 pm
recovered from covid 19 and make sure that you are eligible as well, and i will just add that this timing of getting a shot before october, the flu shot. that's another one that you should ideally get before halloween. okay look, there are some doctors who say there's no evidence that young, healthy people even need this additional shot. how do you view that? i'd say it's hard to actually put it to put a stake in the sand and say there is no evidence of healthy people need the shot that therefore don't get it because there is there are a lot of unknowns out there not only with what could happen cases this fall this winter. but what may potentially happen if you were in london, young and healthy, you get covid. and when your outcome could be could be really bad. could you spread it to someone else could you develop long, covid? so that's why i think if anyone out there if you're on the fence music, i'm young and healthy. i've been fully vaccinated. i don't want the shot at the very least, chowder healthcare professional. just make sure you're getting the right answers for you and that you are well aware of what could potentially happen this winter. okay real quickly, when might the by vaillant booster
3:08 pm
become available to people under 12? i've heard. i've heard through the grapevine that we'll see data earlier this later this fall september october don't have a clear timeline yet the one antiviral treatment we have from monkey pox. i want to talk about that as well. tea packs right. the fda is now saying don't prescribe it to healthy adults who are not suffering severe symptoms. why that's exactly what they're saying. the reason why is because if we are overprescribing medications not wholly with teapots and monkey virus, but in any case is, you can actually induce resistance either from viruses like monkey pox or from bacteria because chris and what's happening, viruses mutate all the time. and if we accidentally having virus mutate and it and it's selected for to protect itself against tea packs the antiviral, we could have a resistant virus to that, because teapots targets basically one protein on the virus strain so long story short overprescribe. action in any case, it's not a good thing, and we've learned something from covid 19, such as virus is mutating health equity and make sure the right people get the right treatment and we hope
3:09 pm
those messages continue. is this similar to if you're fairly healthy, not having major issues? don't try to get packs, love it or take packs livid. we don't have the data yet to suggest that paxil vivid that i'm sorry that sars-cov-2 could eat bait packs of it in terms of resistance, but there is no evidence to suggest that if you're young and healthy employee vaccinate that it's going to make a big difference. long term if you get packs of it or not, so that's why i say you don't rush out and get it if you aren't eligible for it. hey, the c d. c has issued an alert about a strain of enterovirus, right and, of course, enteroviruses circulate each year and usually caused just cold life symptoms. but we're hearing that there have been recent cases. and kids linked to paralysis. and i want to talk about this not to free parents out, but just to make sure parents are aware and realize that it's extremely rare. so as you mentioned and taro virus is a very common virus that we see a lot of kids they can cause the common cold. in rare cases, this specific strain of enterovirus called e 68 can lead to paralysis and kids what we call acute flaccid
3:10 pm
myelitis, the important thing for parents to understand again. don't panic. but if your child has a cold and prolonged symptoms, and you notice some arbor, some weakness, arm weakness. facial drooping something seems off chat with the health care provider sooner rather than later. it is extremely rare, but it can be serious, even fatal. alright i want to bring it back to actor ryan reynolds, which you posed in your wannabe jeopardy. of course he got that very public. alaska p, which we're all supposed to get after we turned 50. you're not there yet. okay i've done it. but how can we reduce our risk for colon cancer? simply put what the one thing that we can do is recognize the fact that colorectal cancer affects millions of people domestically and worldwide. and here's six simple things everyone can do. starting literally right now. number one is get screened. if you're 45, or if you have a family history and or risk factors, you may need to get screened earlier, so make sure you're aware of that. controlling your weight is also a great way to reduce your risk
3:11 pm
of getting colon cancer. staying physically active. that's three. also christian. it's important that we are cognizant of our diet. we're avoiding ultra processed foods were paying more attention to eating. fruits vegetables and fiber. eat more fiber your colon. well thank you and last, but definitely not least, avoiding smoking and avoiding alcohol. those are six surefire ways to reduce your risk of developing colorectal cancer. alright doctor patel, i would play around the final jeopardy trying to double my winnings but afraid we are out of time. but thank you so much. we're gonna do it next week, just because you said that okay, let's do it. thank you so much. really appreciate it. thank you do want to bring you back to that breaking news. we're still following it. a four alarm fire has burned at least two homes along interstate 5 80 at 35th avenue. this the laurel district . we have some new video into the newsroom, and we'll show that to you next on getting answers. for 100 years, shriner's children's has committed itself to being pioneers in pediatric medicine join host kristen bell, celebrating a century of the most amazing care anywhere. don't miss miracles, magic and

more now on that breaking news we're following in oakland the past hour of four alarm fire has burned at least two homes along interstate 5 80 at 35th avenue. this is new video that just came into our newsroom. you can see the flames from the perspective of a passing car that's driving. this car looks to be going eastbound right? because this is breaking out on the westbound side east of the westbound side , and you can see how it started as the vegetation fire on the side of the freeway and then spread to the homes immediately behind it. we understand, possibly just from looking at the video. maybe two homes burned. i do want to tell you that right now what we understand is that one lane is open westbound on 5 80. it looks like all the eastbound lanes are open. however, they're moving very, very slowly. you want to try to avoid that stretch of 5 80 if at all possible and will continue to try to get details for you on this fire. i'm moving on back to getting answers. barrier husband father in

businessman is getting ready to pound the pavement for an important cause tomorrow. greg cook, ceo of cooked construction will set out on a run from san francisco all the way to petaluma. he's planning to go 40 miles, hoping to raise $40,000 for prostate cancer research. and greg is joining us live now to talk more about his upcoming run and the inspiration for it, greg, i hope you are car bell loading today. and resting very , very much, so. oh yeah, absolutely right. i saw the map there. you're running on. absolutely you're running from san francisco to petaluma 40 miles. i understand the number. 40 has real significance. talk to us about that. yeah, and a multitude of different ways. you know, 40 is kind of the start of when people start early stages of prostate cancer research, um and kind of testing begins, especially if you have a long history of it in your life. um 40, you know, i also just recently turned 40. and so i
3:16 pm
thought i needed something kind of inspirational to kind of kick off my forties and started. what what better than to kind of kind of raise awareness for prostate cancer. have you lost people to prostate cancer? ah! business wise? yeah i had a client several years ago. kind of in the middle of a project. kind of suffered or succumbed to prostate cancer and ended up passing and kind of halfway through the project, and it was pretty detrimental to the project. and then, um more recently had another client that also kind of struggled and thankfully, is in remission from it. so um, it's kind of always been in and around, uh, my awareness and i thought this was a pretty good cause. well i know you're a runner and regularly do half marathons, right? but how have you been training for this ? i assume it's the longest distance you've ever tried to run. uh by almost double. yeah pretty much how you would go into any kind of marathon
3:17 pm
training or, you know, half marathon training. it's you know, started 68 months ago. short runs interval training kind of extending the length and duration of time. um and really just kind of lots of stretching and exercise, making sure you're eating right and like you, said carballo, loading lots of carbs at this last last stage, kind of ramping back down into just mentally preparing for quite the track, so i know you're starting at your cook construction offices, your ending at a beer garden. that's a great idea because you want to celebrate by the time you get there, but along the way, how will you do it? are you going to try to go nonstop? do you have helpers or refreshment stations along the way? um no, i would. so we have a couple of friends that have decided to join in and run a couple of miles here, and they're kind of help stretch out the dirt. the duration. um you know, my goal is to kind of run three walk one in the efforts to just completing the run, not necessarily kind of going for
3:18 pm
time. um you know, it's a long stretch. it's going to be grueling. definitely some aches and pains throughout the process . so really, the goal is just to finish trying to try to raise awareness for the prostate cancer foundation and hopefully celebrate at the end. and how can people support your fundraising efforts? um just i mean, finding me on the middle of the run cheering me on. we do have a donation page on the prostate cancer prostate cancer website. um and any any possible donations is really welcome. alright greg. how many minutes or how many hours? i should say. do you hope to accomplish this in uh, hopefully it'll be roughly less than about eight hours. but i have allotted about 10 just to play it safe. alright it's an all day effort tomorrow. congratulations in advance. good luck to you. thanks so much. i appreciate it. coming up. we'll visit our breaking news story and also the east bay woman

3:22 pm
legacy, among them a barrier mother and daughter team who had turned their interest in the queen into a children's book series, janet mccarroll has authored when buckingham calls the 1st 1st book in a series called elizabeth and the piccadilly council. but this isn't the elderly proper queen you've seen in the news. this is the monarch reimagined as a young woman with a set of multicultural friends joining us live now to discuss the book and their brush with queen elizabeth , author janet mccarroll and her mother and oakland teacher janet gregory. welcome, janet and janet. hi i did so nice to see you, janet mccarroll. i'll start with you. congrats on the book, and i should say condolences because i know this has been. i imagine a pretty tough week for you, right? yeah yeah, it has been in a lot of ways. um probably not so unexpected, but , yeah, definitely my heart's breaking, you know, with so many others out there that love the queen so fascinated how, as an
3:23 pm
american who grew up in the east bay how you became a fan of the british monarch enough to base a series on her. um i guess it is . you know, a lot of people find it pretty random, but i think like most little girls growing up by it always, you know, wondered, you know, if princes and princesses for real like in disney movies, and, um i asked my mom one time when i was really small and i said, hey, you know, princesses real or is this just something in movies and the only, uh, princess that she could think of was princess diana and so kind of like everybody that loves the british royal family. my love and connection with the british royal family started there. and then as i got older because the interest never waned. i just kept researching and learning. and um i ended up actually developing a bit of appreciation for prince charles. i know that he's not everybody's favorite, but i came to appreciate the guy a lot and all that he stands for in terms of the environment. and um and then i kept learning more
3:24 pm
and i came to queen elizabeth and i really found that she was the person to be intrigued with and so that's kind of how it kicked off. for me. it's just been a lifelong interest and fascination. so young elizabeth is the central character in when buckingham calls what is the book about what do you explore in there? it's a children's adventurous series about the queen of england, and it's the first book starts off with her life when she's 10 years old and she's reasonably you know, i guess you could say a normal child. she's a princess, but she's certainly a lesser royal and when her uncle abdicates and she comes to learn that one day she's gonna be queen and there's a huge move and upset in the family and they've got a move to buckingham palace and, um the first story really starts off. highlighting, um you know all the friends she makes when she moves to the palace and um and kind of the adventures that they take on from there on out, and i noticed you've given her a set of friends from very diverse
3:25 pm
backgrounds. are those characters drawn from your own life? um only one uh, yeah, i think all the characters kind of were built on somebody, or, you know different personalities that i've known along the way, but only one of them is actually based on a real person. so there's a character in the book named davie sing who's a young indian girl and she's actually based on a really wonderful friend that i have who's also his name is davey and she and i went to grad school together, and we would always talk about adventures that we'd like to have and traveling. and so when i started writing the series, i really wanted her, um as one of the characters in the book, and so she's actually based on herself, and she is one of the girls in the book. i know your love of the royals came originally from your mom. janet janet gregory. you're a teacher. i'm a clemens high school in oakland. um, you know, maybe those kids are a little old for janet's book, but have you been teaching lessons about queen? in elizabeth's reign and legacy,
3:26 pm
and i'm really curious if your students related are interested. yes i have. and you would be surprised to know even though they are a little older, they really didn't know anything about the queen from the beginning, but they are so intrigued now, and when she passed away every all the students were coming to my classrooms. and this mccarren this gregory, do you know that the that the queen has passed away? she did. i said yes, i do know and they were so excited. but during the summer this past summer, i thought summer school at my climbers. and i teach an academic literacy class. and i used that book in the farmer actually read for novels, and that was one of them and that students really were interested , and i was very happy about that, in very amazed because when we first started, they say, we don't want to read this book. it's too long. it's too big, and as we got into it, they became more interested. and my students that i have now are very interested in there, asking more
3:27 pm
and more. are we going to read it soon? right teacher that i am being metric by who actually talked the program last year that i'm teaching now, um, she, actually, um. get up dedicated 15 books to our classroom, a class set for the students. to be very, very interest is a sign of you being a good teacher, janet and janet. congratulations the book is called when buckingham calls at the first in a series so we'll take a short break and be right back. for 100 years, shriner's children's has committed itself to being pioneers in pediatric medicine join host kristen bell, celebrating a century of the most amazing care anywhere. don't miss miracles, magic and milestones. i was driving down the road and out of nowhere. boom i got hit by aar boom in a car accident. car accident can hit you out of nowhere. but when you call us, boom, just like that. we can help you get your
