♪♪ >> this is abc7news. ama: a growing memorial tonight in the south bay for an eight-year-old boy who was struck by a car and killed on his way to school. that evening. i'm ama daetz. dan: i'm dan ashley. thank you for joining us. third grade student jacob villanueva was in a crosswalk in san jose when he was hit. amanda del castillo you was there tonight as the community came together for a vigil. reporter: a growing memorial marks the site were an eight-year-old and his babysitter were walking toward castle mont elementary in san jose friday morning. they were a block from campus when the two were hit in the

crosswalk. both were taken to the hospital. jacob did not survive. >> it could have happened to her. my daughter. reporter: arcadia garcia didn't know the boy but she knows the crosswalk. >> cars are never castle. they just drive. they don't care if you walking by. reporter: the community gathered for a vigil at the crosswalk. >> she says, he was very friendly. the other little kids loved him. san jose police say a woman driving this black mercedes went to take a left onto driftwood drive when she hit the pair. we are told the driver stayed on scene and is cooperating with the investigation. it's unclear what led up to the crash. a dark day added to a sad and frustrating year with the city's department -- year. as a friday evening, san jose was at 50 traffic deaths this

year alone. jacobs passing, the first juvenile death. >> today illustrated the worst of what could happen if you are driving too fast or distracted. these decisions have very serious ramifications. reporter: it's not a place where dot has a history of traffic safety incidents. the department is investigating the area from paint to trays to signs to see what should be done. parents pleading for change so other families never have to face this loss or feel this pain. >> i hope she is safe and will see her when she comes back. this mom will never see her son. reporter: i'm amanda del castillo yo, abc7news. ama: bart service has been restored. a motorcycle is involved in a crash ended up landing on the

bart tracks. that's right between the 19th street and macarthur stations. the person on the motorcycle was struck and killed by a train. trains were initially stopped in all directions but the lines were slowly restored throughout the evening. police investigating a two-car accident in antioch today that sent a car careening into kids and a home. it happened on sycamore drive. police say the tan mercury mystique was attempting to make a left turn when a red and polished bed pastor. the collision causing a power to strike the three kids who were walking home from school. the car hit a home. the kids and the impala driver were airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries. the mystique driver appeared to be ok. dan: one home destroyed and four others damaged by a brush fire alongside interstate 580 in oakland earlier today. we spoke with some residents who

watched anxiously as the flames raced towards their homes. >> -- reporter: this is the damage caused by a vegetation fire that spread to homes in laurel district on friday. >> so the in law unit is our back house. the man cave. it burned down. the back of it is burned completely. the wall is gone. reporter: he went to check the mail. as he walked back, he saw smoke. by the time he ran to the backyard, the fire was in histories. >> we didn't lose our main house so that's a plus. reporter: the fire was mostly contained within an hour. it shut down three lanes of westbound 580 as fire crews battled spot fires. >> because of the slight wind, that contributed to the fire spread. we will be getting some rain this weekend. the weather conditions contributed to the fire. reporter: the fire chief says the first fire unit arrived on scene within two minutes. that may have helped keep the fire from spreading to the

chevron gas station. >> it was really bad. reporter: eric joy says his backyard was burned but his house was saved. two years ago, there was a similar kind of fire. the chief says a homeless and cap it is unlikely this time around but nothing is being rolled out. >> we did have a fire here approximately two years ago. there was an cap meant activity. there were an housed here. the fire today, we won't have any answers to those questions until we have a thorough investigation. >> went to the back door and i saw fire. reporter: margie has lived here for six years. she didn't lose her home but she watched her car burn. >> when i looked out of my window, i saw all the cars on fire. oh lord. i better get out of here. reporter: no residents were injured but one firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat related injuries. abc7news. ama: let's turn now to the

weather. it has been a while since we've been able to say this. there's rain in the forecast for this weekend. sandhya: it is so exciting and it's going to come in the second half of your weekend. let's talk about the storm impact scale. we rank our storms. one, light, five, severe. this one is a one. it is coming out of the gulf of alaska. it is going to bring us much-needed rain. let's time it out for you. late tomorrow night, showers moving into the north bay. sunday morning, the widespread rain comes in. pockets of moderate to heavy rainfall expected. into sunday afternoon, you get scattered showers but that's not where the storm ends. watch out for hazardous travel this weekend. strong wind and ponding on the runways. wipers on and lights on. it is showing up on multiple days. sunday, monday, tuesday. i will be back with a closer look at how much rain you can

expect in the rest of the timeline, coming up. dan: thanks. with the rain on the way, north bay residents are preparing for potential flooding in some areas. san rafael installed a new pump and generator. last year storm brought two feet of water into their pantry that provides food and supplies to families in need. santa rosa fire department will be monitoring burn scars from 2020 glass fire. >> we expect localized flooding, nuisance flooding, ponding. our eyes will be on the burn scar to see how it reacts. dan: north bay residents can expect to see an inch or more of rain during the early season storm. we will detail more of that shortly. our weather team will be tracking the storm all weekend long for you. you can get a live update every hour on our abc 7 bay area streaming app. download it now so you will have it ready before the rain hits. it is free and easy to download.

ama: mourners are waiting hours to pay tribute to queen elizabeth ii. let's take a look at london where she's lying in state. among those who waited in line today, david beckham. faith abubey says the weather is becoming a concern. reporter: tonight, london officials urging the hundreds of thousands of mourners lining up to pay tribute to queen elizabeth to bundle up. some of the mourners expected to wait in line for up to 22 hours as temperatures drop overnight. the queen lying in state, stretching to five miles. so long that for eight hours, officials asking those not yet there to temporarily stay away. we met peter strafford and his wife, in line for several hours. >> 11.5 hours. reporter: like peter, several

mourners telling us over the last few days that they don't mind waiting. they are here to witness history and to pay their final respects. 30 years ago, peter was one of the firefighters who helped save windsor castle during a devastating fire. >> there i am, about to put on my breathing apparatus to go into the fire. reporter: the queen gifted him this medallion acknowledging his efforts. today, he bid her farewell. >> i'm upset. reporter: the queens children holding vigil at their mother's coffin. overnight, video of guards rehearsing for the queens funeral on monday. london now under heightened security. about 500 dignitaries and heads of state including president biden and jill biden expected at the funeral. another one million people expected in the crowd. the bbc reporting there will be 1500 military personnel and

ama: a serious crash after a suspect took off from a crime scene. it happened at the intersection of tilly and center roads. it started this morning when deputies responded to a trespassing call at the santa clara county fairgrounds. a spec -- suspect sideswiped a car and drove a mile before hitting another car. three people were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. the chp and san jose police are investigating. dan: four people were taken to the hospital after a balcony collapsed on a two-story home in daly city. the incident happened at westmore avenue near skylight boulevard shortly after 1:00 this afternoon. two adults and two children were

injured in the collapse. all four people were transported by ambulance to a local trauma center for their injuries. the city inspector is investigating the cause of this collapse. ama: 41 people were arrested and cited after blocking traffic outside one of the terminals at san francisco international airport. [inaudible] this video is provided by night here showing today's protest. fast food workers say they make just over $17 per hour in the union that represents them says they haven't received your -- received a raise in three years. negotiations have stalled in the workers voted last month to go on strike. the head of the california labor federation was among those arrested and cited today. dan: abc 7 is committed to building a better bay area and environment. governor newsom and solano county signed a huge legislative package, a plan to combat climate change and boost clean

energy in california. it's a $54 billion investment toward climate programs and is designed to cut air pollution by 60%, reduce state oil consumption and create a clean energy grid. the goal is to make california carbon neutral by 2045. meantime, governor newsom's feud with florida governor ron desantis escalated yet again today. newsom took aim at the leader of the sunshine state on twitter, challenging him to a debate. tim johns has been tracking the story and breaks it down for you tonight. >> what ron desantis is doing is a disgrace. reporter: a war of words unfolding friday afternoon between gavin newsom and ron desantis. >> it's like the trash talk before a heavyweight bout. reporter: newsom saying that desantis craves attention and challenging him to abate before the midterm election. it comes after desantis hit back at newsom earlier in the day following his call for the department of justice to investigate his immigration

tactics. >> the governor of california sent a letter to the department of justice saying, you need to prosecute texas and florida governors. all i can say is, i think his hair gel is interfering with his brain function. reporter: desantis and his texas counterpart greg abbott sending migrants from their states to democratic strongholds. one of the most high-profile instances coming this week after desantis send 50's people tomorrow to -- martha's vineyard, a move that phil matier says both politicians are attempting to use to their advantage. >> ron desantis and gavin newsom were made for each other. they are both striding, they are both young, they are relatively ambitious. this is a way to get on the national platform. reporter: activists say it is important to remember that these migrants are human beings. >> that's the unfortunate thing that these republican governors are playing into this political theater. they think that by treating

immigrants like this, they man a:ruit fli have been found aecond location in san clara county. they've turned up in sunnyvale. the county along with the state will be putting out bait starting tomorrow to catch them. a couple weeks ago, they were found in san jose. they can do extensive damage to crops. dan: let's turn our attention to the weekend weather forecast. great to see some rain coming. ama: it is so nice. sandhya: better late than never. we are getting it early this season. you will need your umbrellas. make sure you start looking for them if you haven't done that yet. let's talk about what you can expect this weekend. here's your storm alert. minor flooding on the roadways. possibility of lightning. this is your time to clear your storm drains and gutters if you haven't done it. avoid any major problems.

the early-season storm dropping down from the gulf of alaska. it will be a slow mover and it's going to stall just off the california coast which is why we are concerned about hazardous travel. the likelihood of that will be high. ponding on the roadways. downed tree limbs. you are looking at low likelihood of debris flows, mudslides, and power outages. it's a level one on our abc 7 exclusive storm impact scale. slight chance of thunder andppe. the oils get drawn up so definitely be careful out there. look at how beautiful the view is of san francisco tonight. all is calm. temperatures in the 50's and 60's across the entire area. ocean temperature, 58 degrees. increasing clouds and wind tomorrow. storm moves in early sunday morning. it will be unsettled through next week. first comes the wind. that will be gusty as we head into tomorrow afternoon.

35 miles per hour out of the west. it switches directions come out of the south as we head toward sunday. 38 to 44 mile per hour wins. that could be strong enough to take down tree limbs so watch out for that. saturday night, showers developing in the north bay but we have to wait until sunday morning. this is when the widespread rain moves in. 6:00 in the morning, starts to come through. there will be pockets of heavier rain at 8:00. be careful if you do have early plans. at noon time, pockets of moderate. scattered showers will continue. this will be a messy commute. if you can stay off of the roadways, that might be a good idea. rainfall totals, one to two inches and the four northern end of our viewing area through monday. rain shadow effect giving you 2/10 of an inch in the southern end of our viewing area.
